This is by far my favorite INXS song. The meaning is deeper and deeper the more I explore it and the more I live life. I don't think I will ever grow tired of it. We all have tragedies that are chained around our necks that we carry with us each and every day. Some us choose to deal with it gracefully. Others for whatever reason, can't. Beautiful lyrics.
June Pixton This is a powerful song with brilliant lyrics. I like your comment and agree with every part of it until you get to the part "Some of us choose to deal........". I by no means am arguing or disrespecting your opinion. Please understand this. But in my humble opinion and personal experience, It's not always a person's "choice" how they deal with a tragedy. I think that some people are "capable" of handling a tragedy and move forward without a great deal of interference in their lives, while others are "unable" too. It also depends on the magnitude of the tragedy. I've learned that you never know how you are going to handle a tragedy until it is thrust upon you. It is impossible to know how you are going to react because you've never experienced it before. We all like to believe we know how we will handle it, but unfortunately most of us will not handle it like we believe we would. Even the strongest of people can be brought to their knees. When life as you knew it has been ripped away from you in the blink of an eye, there is no "Graceful" about it. The best you can hope for is to go into survival mode....... And the desire too.
In an interview as "X" album was released band members were asked what song on the album will be relevant 10 years later and beyond and they said "The Stairs".
such an epic vibe to this song..makes one take pause and reflect..things..people we have lost,,bewilderment of the state of humanity..and knowing we need to change our ways...
This is my definitive inxs track, only heard this for the 1st time 12 mths ago. i cant believe its not on their greatest hits CD which i have been playing regularly for the past 25 years one of my biggest regrets is not seeing them live, if you are a fan live baby live dvd is a must see.
Every time you hear Hutchence and INXS, you're reminded of just HOW good they really were. I wonder a lot what gems he might have gone on to create if he hadn't written himself off caught up in the madness of life with Paula Yates. Such a ridiculous waste of such a rare talent, and the life of a man worthy of living so much longer. It seems like a thousand years since he died and I'm still in shock & mourning. 😶😞
In a room above a busy street The echoes of a life The fragments and the accidents Separated by incidents Listened to by walls We share the same spaces Repeated in the corridors Performing the same movements Story to story Building to building Street to street We pass each other Story to story Building to building Street to street We pass each other Listened to by walls We share the same spaces Repeated in the corridors Performing the same movements The nature of your tragedy Is chained around your neck Do you lead or are you led? Are you sure that you don't care? There are reasons here to give your life And follow in your way The passion lives to keep your faith Though all are different, all are great Climbing as we fall We dare to hold on to our fate And steal away our destiny To catch ourselves With quiet grace Story to story Building to building Street to street We pass each other on the stairs Listened to by walls We share the same spaces Repeated in the corridors Performing the same movements Story to story Building to building Street to street We pass each other on the stairs
Lyrics written in time for times .... March 28 ,2020 The Passion is to keep the faith alive 🙏🌎🙏 Corona virus The staircases are filling up Pray for the world🙏🌎🙏❤❤❤
You know these lyrics are hauntingly similar to the way he died "In a room above, a busy street, the echoes of a life" "The nature of your tragedy, is chained around your neck" How freaky is that!!!
UGH! Dare I say it, this song might be enough to make me...actually start *LIKING* Michael Hutchence (who I've previously dismissed as an old ham and a sort of sanitized teenyboppers'-idol version of Nick Cave). But this is such a beautiful song, and I've only just heard it for the first time today. I think it's really changign my opinion of him.
MICHAEL - NEC PLURIBUS IMPAR- BLESS HIM- DEUS VULT- NEVER FORGOTTEN EVER- HIS LIFE MAY HAVE PASSED - BUT HIS LIGHT SHINES EVEN BRIGHTER ⚡💚⚡💚⚡💚💃👏💃👏💃👏💃💚⚡💚⚡💚⚡🐕
The "real" question issss?? ...Why the fuck did we PASS each other on the stairs, Because as the song implies a bit of importance between the characters in the song. Oh and I have literally lived it, : and the regret of passing each other is making this song terribly true to me..Stop and say" hi, lets get together", while passing on the stairs. So the song does not become >we passed each other on the stairs
Quite possibly the deepest & most beautiful soft rock song ever written.
RIP and long live Michael Hutchence (January 22, 1960 - November 22, 1997), aged 37
You will always be remembered as a legend.

Can't believe it's been 20 Years!
We pass each other --living our lives and yet no--one cares --no hellos--no smiles-- no humanity it seems
In a room above a busy street
The echoes of a life
The fragments and the accidents
Separated by incidents
Listened to by walls
We share the same spaces
Repeated in the corridors
Performing the same movements
Story to story
Building to building
Street to street
We pass each other
Story to story
Building to building
Street to street
We pass each other
Listened to by walls
We share the same spaces
Repeated in the corridors
Performing the same movements
The nature of your tragedy
Is chained around your neck
Do you lead or are you led?
Are you sure that you don't care?
There are reasons here to give your life
And follow in your way
The passion lives to keep your faith
Though all are different, all are great
Climbing as we fall
We dare to hold on to our fate
And steal away our destiny
To catch ourselves
With quiet grace
Story to story
Building to building
Street to street
We pass each other on the stairs
Listened to by walls
We share the same spaces
Repeated in the corridors
Performing the same movements
Story to story
Building to building
Street to street
We pass each other on the stairs

He was the modern day Jim Morrison!
Except Michael was better looking, his voice was much better and his moves more sultry. But yeah, they both had curly brown hair. lol
