    This is the FDA list of pigments. It tells you what ingredients can be used on what part of the body. www.fda.gov/Co...
    The red pigments in James's "pressed pigments" are:
    Red 6 Lake (CI 15850), Red 7 Lake (CI 15850), Red 40 Lake (CI 16035), Red 27 Lake (CI 45410), Red 33 Lake (CI 17200)
    Red 40 IS approved for use on the eyes. The other red pigments are not. Red 6/7 are commonly used in "pressed pigment palettes". They were in Jeffree's and Manny's palettes. I've personally never seen Red 27 or Red 33 in an eyeshadow palette before. So, even if you have used red pigments in the past and had no problems, it's possible for you to have a reaction to these different red pigments.

    This was a very well said video. You hit it right on the nail, and the honest truth is that no, because of the fact that I do not do reviews and have never touched on ingredients on my channel, I did not even think to touch on the risks in my video, nor did I know about them because I don't have sensitive skin and have always just used palettes put in front of me with no issue. I definitely agree that I should have mentioned it and warned people with sensitive eyelids of the staining. I released this palette with fellow makeup artists in mind to see what looks they could create, so I assumed staining was common knowledge, but your point about my diverse audience definitely is true. That being said, customers should know whether or not they have sensitive skin, what their allergies are, and do their proper research on a product before buying it. Kodee said in her livestream that she gets hives ALL of the time and in the replies to her tweet of people suggesting solutions to get rid of the staining, she was allergic to practically everything being suggested. It is not a brand nor a person's responsibility to give every single disclaimer, or everyone would be sitting on camera for hours on end. I would have apologized to Kodee for her experience if it weren't expressed in a 2 minute video screaming, and her in the replies of the tweet telling people that I don't care about my fans, all before I even had the chance to publicly respond. I am a firm believer in treating people the way you want to be treated and the expectation of influencers to act as feelingless robots and take whatever is thrown at them while still smiling is crazy, we are human beings too. I wish Kodee the best and hope she is okay, and thank you Jen for expressing your thoughts on this manner in a respectful way.

    The thing is, that unlike Jeffree & Manny, this palette is *not* actually James' product - it's Morphe's. Jeffree owns his line, manages, develops, markets his products & is ultimately responsible for it. So far it seems that this is the same direction Manny is headed. James Charles "collaborated" with his....at the heart of it all, this is a (highly effective) marketing plan and nothing more. The rest is Morphe's responsibility. If your favourite actor was in an ad campaign for a car you purchased, you wouldn't hold the actor responsible if that car's brakes failed. An over simplification, but that is the heart of it. I've heard a bunch of complaints directed James, I've seen him respond, but I've yet to hear the tirade against Morphe. (Is it me, or does it have the hint Morphe hanging another influencer out to take the heat for them?) I have very few personal feelings about any of the 3 fellows; I'm not defending any of them, it's just my (long winded) thoughts.

    • @karlabonilla6077
      @karlabonilla6077 5 років тому +47

      Well said, this happened with the Jacklyn vault too where Morphe let Jacklyn take the heat. Like you said both Jeffree and Manny own their brand so it is their responsibility to release this information not James'.

      His name is on the palette. He claims that he worked "closely" with Morphe to "develop" all the shadows in the palette. He is promoting it and talking about it's content to his audience. He is just as responsible as Morphe for giving consumers the correct information. I suspect that he is ignorant of what pigments are and the fact that they are not FDA approved for eye use. However, that does not excuse him. It is his responsibility to know the ins and outs of the product that bears his name. He should properly educate himself so that he can properly educate the consumer. Also, Morphe should spell this out on the back of the palette, not with just an eye in a circle with a slash across it. Just my thoughts.

    • @thatnortherner1
      @thatnortherner1 5 років тому +27

      His name is on it and he says he worked with Morphe on the formula so unless he's liying then he has some responsibility. Although I do think morphe need to step up about this as well it shouldn't be all on James

    • @miriam7872
      @miriam7872 5 років тому +20

      I don't know a single celeb that helped design a car they then advertised, so I think those scenarios aren't really comparable.
      It is true that it would better if morphe would handle all that stuff since they have experience and people who won't take complaints as personal attacks. They are definitely using a 19-yo as marketing sign and meatshield at the same time. I don't get why his manager isn't protecting him better, tbh..

    • @heatherbonelli
      @heatherbonelli 5 років тому +23

      I couldn't agree with you more. In my opinion Morphe has a history of letting the collaborator take the heat for formulas MORPHE created. James developed the colors and gave his seal of approval for all the finalized shades and formulas, but based on how they performed... Not based on ingredients. That's Morphes gig. They let Jaclyn take a ration of crap for the RElaunch of the vault also. To the consumer it didn't seem there was ANY difference between the flawed first launch and the "reformulation" of the second LAUNCH. Jaclyn is still suffering the hit to her brand because of that. I love James 'palette, so I have nothing bad to say about it, but I DO feel that Morphe needs to stand by their collaborators better and step up to the plate and comment themselves when stuff like this happens. James is an 18 year old kid, of COURSE his responses are going to be off the cuff, emotionally charged, and a bit immature... HE'S A DAMN TEENAGER!! All I gotta say is he's got his ish together FAR more than I did at 18 and I am in his cheering section the whole way. I can't wait to see what he becomes!! ❤

    Like I was saying on twitter, not everyone understands the difference. He himself said in his video that he didn't even know there was a difference between pressed pigments and a typical eyeshadow until he started working w/morphe on formulations. If he didn't know, how can anyone including him assume that the regular consumer knows?

    My issue with james' response is that if i spoke to an irate customer at my job the way he did to her, I'd be fired or reprimanded severely. In the customer service industry, customers can talk all kinds of nonsense and you have to remain professional. Even in corporate America, we always have to maintain a level of professionalism. Im assuming he's severely out of touch with how the common folk every day worker has to deal with criticism at their job. It's real life situations that we all deal with and have to overcome professionally or else it could cost us our livelihood.

      its ya girl liz I agree that gurus should be more respectful even though they are human they are still marketing them self and building a business and they are the face of the business. On the other side of things tho... it isn’t his palette, it’s morphe’s palette. His video was advertising it, not supposed to be a disclose all on the palette. You can find that info online. He shouldn’t have been blamed in that way, she should’ve talked to customer service. He isn’t part of their business, he’s just an avenue for marketing.

      I've been in customer service, and you're correct. However, she didn't come at this from a customer service perspective. This would be the equivalent of someone coming up to you on the street and yelling that you poisoned them intentionally. Still going to politely apologize then? I have almost infinite patience... the way she delivered her problems was beyond unprofessional. The fact that she got an unprofessional response is not surprising to me. I would have more sympathy here if she hadn't made it seem like he was trying to kill people on purpose when it simply stained her eyes and (maybe?) caused a hive. How you treat others is going to dictate how you get treated. Just because customer service agents get treated like crap and have to smile while that happens does not make it right. I would imagine you would agree with that. I've had to smile through some of the most awful stuff, but she didn't contact Morphe's customer service. She made a ridiculous video that was not leveling a complaint. She wanted to make a ridiculous video like all her other ones. And that's fine. But don't expect a customer service response when you don't approach customer service. I doubt she would have called Morphe and screamed that stuff into the phone.

    This is why social media beauty icons, youtubers, etc should be careful about how they say (on video) "I helped formulate, I created a formula, I talked to the chemists" etc. They can be held responsible for dissatisfaction/reaction due to inaccurate/omitted information or assumption. Also, they cannot pull the "I didn't know" card.
    If they claim to partake in formulating, they need to have a pretty good understanding (extensive/simple enough for public) of the chemistry/ingredients of their product.
    With better knowledge, they can present products better and answer questions/comments better without confusion and defensiveness.

    Kodee did not act like a customer who wanted to resolve a complaint, she was literally SCREAMING in her video. She was acting like someone who wanted something for free: absolutely unreasonable. I work in the restaurant industry and I’ve worked in retail, if that was a customer in a store she would have been asked to leave. And maybe that’s why I feel a certain type of way about her video and her Twitter nonsense. I don’t know why people think it’s ok for them to act horrible on the internet and when someone reacts a certain way they want to play the victim. James could have absolutely handled the situation better, but that doesn’t mean she had the right to flat out attack him before giving him the benefit of the doubt. She could have privately messaged him first, she CHOSE not to do that. Her goal was to attack and to embarrass him, and I’m going to say it: CLOUT. I’m not stanning James at all, but her behavior was incredibly disgusting. Just because that what she “does,” doesn’t make it right.

      It's obvious none of you are in high management. Ask them to leave, and yea it may settle the issue in the lower ranks (the retail store location you're employed at) but an issue like this could lead to corporate offices and the CEO of the company lol issues don't just end when you ask someone to leave...especially when they have a valid point to be pissed off. Yea it sucks when ppl yell at you but y'all are really just the worker bees for large corporations who would reimburse the customer as well as let you go in a heart beat... *shrugs* James handled the situation terribly. Hopefully he can learn from it.

  • @sonyahdepasse9424

    I can't comment on James's comment sadly so here goes... 'Kodee' is not a normal consumer,she is a rant channel.She is allegedly massively sensitive to almost everything except loud noises..which is a shame...lf l were a cynic l would say that she planned this,knowing how allergic she is.However,perhaps she only capitalised on the situation *AFTER* SHE USED A BOX OF CHEMICALS on HER EYES *WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE PACKAGING*.....
    I do hope that all the revenue (and publicity & everything else that she gained) this has generated for her has been adequate compensation for her 'pain & suffering'...
    Who the hell has as many sensitivities as she allegedly does & doesn't SCOUR not just packaging but every other source of information off their own back?!
    I have allergies & sensitivities & my first thought if l mess up is why the eff didn't l check more carefully because I'm an ADULT & l take accountability for my actions instead of blaming the nearest cat on a windowsill or a tree and because blame culture is effing PATHETIC.Is it so you can sue?!WTF?!
    Why does it matter so much.A mistake happened,move on.I personally don't want or need;freebies,to win compensation or an apology.l am not GREEDY.lt's a disgusting thing that's ruining people's character and by extension society.Sorrynotsorry.

      A very risky mistake and you guys aren't even considering her situation what happen if something like this happened to you. You honestly would be like Elsa singing let it go to yourself?? I'm pretty sure you care too much about your image because for one you are an obvious make up user that mayne uses full face to cover all your imperfections because you aren't satisfied with what your parents made you with. So it's really sad that th all attack her instead of a very irresponsible company Morphe and a super ignorant promoter that feels he is too high and mighty to disclose any FDA WARNINGS because everyone should subconsciously know about pressed pigments?? I have never known or heard of this till I saw this video today so i just be part of those people as well that should have automatically know the dangers and FDA warnings?? I only.go for cruelty free products because they won't have harsh chemicals and i feel that animals should only be eaten not wasted on stupid tests for makeup. Make makeup junkies be test subjects instead. But surprisingly Morphe only just started to stop testing on animals of May this year so. . . That's why I don't care of them and that's why their products can cause harm to people. So you step back and look at the super star who is stupid enough not to know either that DISCLOSURES AND DAD WARNINGS ARE THE LAW AND A MUST WHEN PROMOTING A PRODUCT!! Shit she even have samples of other promoters making 100% sure the full disclose all FDA warnings and regulations. Idiot

    I feel like Kodee overreacted. Honestly unlike Jeffree Starr and Manny, James is doing a collaboration with Morphe he doesn’t own the company. They would have much more knowledge on the legalities and would carry the responsibility of warning customers of all the issues. People sometimes develop allergies out of the blue, what may have been ok in the past to use may not always work the same. I know with myself, in recent years I developed excema on my eyelids. Now I need to be super careful what I use. That was never the case in the past. If you know you have sensitivity to anything you should be more aware of what you use. It’s called being a grownup and looking out for your own best interests.

As a makeup user, I personally know that bright, pigmented colours have a tendency to stain your eyes. On the back of the packaging it has the ‘not eye safe’ symbol, but really what that’s saying is that legally they can’t endorse you putting it on your eyes. I use them on my eyes all the time. Some people can have a reaction to the red dye, it’s unfortunate. She needs to see a dermatologist and grow up. Yes, it sucks. There are other ways she could have handled it.

    Thank you for a calm, logical and informative video. My issue with James is that he basically said that he was in a lab for 12 hours a day formulating this pallet. He always comes across as so entitled. It is not common knowledge that some pigments are not FDA approved for eye use. James has not created anything groundbreaking or original, contrary to what he says. Sugarpill has made a matte red that is vegan for years is one of the best, most true red shades produced. James cannot dismiss his customers so easily and be successful. While the woman in the video was a little over the top, her concerns were legitimate.

    • @TheAuroraGalore

      This!!
      It was a bit irresponsible for him to make claims about his Palette when Sugarpill, Coloured Raine and B Perfect have done the same thing and for a long time. So it shows his lack of knowledge and research about his competitors. It also proves that he did probably embellish how much work he put into it it or better yet how much information he didn't know or even think to ask.
      I think he went into this thinking it was a great business deal from him and made something that he wanted but he forgot about the important aspects that go along with that like looking at ingredients, warnings, other products on the market and backlash (like every brand ever has).
      He has a lot to learn sadly but I think he will get there x

Red lollipops leave your lips red, blue raspberry anything stains etc. And if you are going to spend coin on a pallet you should look into it, I understand james should’ve said something but people have to understand he’s never said anything similar to that about any product review before. And if people would actually read packaging they could prevent these types of situations. Tbh idk why he’s the only one getting heat, god forbid common knowledge is ignored and anyone who’s ever used a pink eyeshadow before not tell kodee. Ok, so here is where I want to chime in....as someone that has severe skin allergies as well as food allergies, the FIRST thing you do with ANY product is a patch test! It doesn't matter if it is makeup, lotion, serums or whatever! To put up a video and say the James Charles palette caused an allergic reaction is crazy, do your own homework before you purchase! The palette is on display at Ulta for customers to swatch. Swatch the colors, walk around and a bit and see how it reacts on your skin. James nor Morphe is responsible for how every single customers skin will react. When is the consumer going to start taking responsibility for their actions and stop blaming others for everything that goes wrong with them?

There is NO way to find out how each and every product will react with our skin, eyes, etc. I have a terrible problem with ALL Tarte products but I don’t spend time ranting and raving. James is a fabulous makeup artist and certainly doesn’t expect any woman to smear shadow over her lid up through the crease. Stain yes, hives No....anything we put anywhere close to ANY orifice should be tested. People have reactions to toothpaste, should the companies put warnings? James might have lacked sensitivity but if ANYONE CAME AT ME THAT WAY I’D DO EXACTLY WHAT HE DID......DISMISS HER BECAUSE SHE IS RUDE. We are taught to speak and listen. MORPHE should be held responsible for not making James fully aware of the need to disclose any such information, and should call it out clearly on the packaging. James is a spokesperson, and he did the choosing of colors but Morphe formulated and sold these pigments. He’s not a scientist. He’s a cocky ridiculous kid with terrible manners and I don’t care for his content or his attitude, but unlike the Jeffrey and Manny palettes, these are still Morphe’s customers in the end... not James’. Morphe would be well served by stipulating disclosures and customer communication practices to their collaborators. In the end, I still can’t stand James, but he only knows what Morphe told him. If he intentionally withheld the information, that’s still on Morphe to contract with their spokespeople and verify their communication of that info.

      Just as I said in my comments on your previous post, I see your point 💯%.
      I do feel James over-inflated his actual input for the final product. Absolutely! Yes, he lied/prevaricated/misrepresented and misled people on that point. No argument from me! ☺
      However, that is a contractual matter between him and Morphe™, at best, no matter how ill-used by, we, the customers/consumers, may feel about what James said/didn't say or do with the finished product.
      Let's break that down:
      CLAIM 1.) James said he had the original IDEA for this palette.
      FACT(s): I don't think this was a lie or misleading in any way. But an idea is just that, an idea; ie: a thought, a dream, a desire. It is NOT a physical, material object/product. "I can dream about (it)..." Is NOT the same as "I actually MADE this with my own two hands".
      CLAIM 2.) James said he "FORMULATED" the final product.
      FACT(S): This is a LIE.
      No matter HOW much time James may have spent at the lab during the creation and production of this palette, he was NOT one of the chemists who took the raw ingredients, performed the titrations of the liquid ingredients (oils, esters, water, etc.), formulated the ratios of dry ingredients to each other and with the liquid ingredients, performed the quality checks, etc.
      At BEST, he may have been given batch samples and had the ability to report his opinion on the product's performance, tactile impressions and give his opinion on colors/hues. (Maybe on the size/placement of pans as well as the packaging, too. No idea.)
      And, going back to claim #1, how did James Charles' "idea" get to Morphe™? What? Did he call them up one day and say, "Morphe™? I've got this sister-slay idea for a sister-palette of super-sister colors and shades for every sister to make their own sister-looks out of!"
      However... Somehow I don't think it quite went down that way. 🤓
      Take care huntsman145 !!

    I’m not going to lie. I disagree with you. Yes, his response was extremely unprofessional, but in his defense, morphe should be the one getting bashed for this.They are the ones that formulated the palette. Not James. It also might be just the batch of eyeshadow. My James Charles palette did not stain my eye or cause a reaction (the pigments) and I have pretty sensitive skin. Kodee was obviously being dramatic and attention-seeking in her video. She most likely just wanted controversy and attention because she was literally SCREAMING in her video. If she was really that angry about what the shadow did to her, she could either simply email or contact morphe and complain. Not publicly post an extremely harsh response. The reason Jeffree and Manny said something about theirs was because THATS THEIR OWN BRAND. James didn’t feel as though he needed to say that they stain because he figured people would’ve already known. Which most people don’t because some people purchasing this palette are beginners and wouldn’t know things like that. But the fact that she was so overdramatic and rude in her video is what made me so angry. Yes, James did do wrong by not saying anything about the staining, but he should not be the one being bashed for it. It’s morphe’s fault. not James.

      I knew that colours that are incredibly pigmented can stain. If you're going to be using a rainbow palette for the rainbow shades and you don't know that rainbow colours can stain there's something wrong. And if you don't patch test when you know you get allergic reacts to a bunch of eyeshadow palettes, that's on you completely. That's like me buying a block of chocolate that has nuts in it when I have an allergic reaction to nuts, eating it, then getting furious at the company because of my mistake.

And she sound like a whiny old woman if you ask me.petty.

    Wait wait wait… so James Charles 1st says that he didn't know anything about the difference between pigments and eye shadows until recently, but then when he gets criticism he turns around and says that this information about pigments and staining is common knowledge?! I mean you can't have it both ways dude. Shady shady shady.

      So... This is my experience, I never ever in my life have a red stain in my skin, never, maybe a lip ink but they are designed to do that... However, I learned of makeup red stains the past Halloween, a good friend of mine put red lipstick and "shadow" on her skin simulating blood, she looked freaking amazing all night, but the next three days... Her arms were bloody red, her fingers look tattooed on red, her face... What I mean to say with this is that two persons can do the exact makeup look and having completely different reactions to it, I have use red lipstick has blood with no issues but my friend's skin is hyper sensitive, she didn't knew, somethings is not the makeup, somethings is the person

    This is so well said. As an owner of a palette, and sensitive skin, I did have stains but, I covered it with concealer and went on with my life. She was being very over dramatic and she agrivated me. I don’t think a hard worker like James should be put down like that. Personally, the stains lasted about 24 hours that I kept concealer on. I have very red skin so I thought they were still there but it was just my underbrow. I am not mad at James and I will stand by the palette in support of him. I am so proud to have it and I will never stop loving it even though I have to be careful with bright pinks😂💖

    So I watched Petty Paige’s video on this and she has clips of Cody saying that she is allergic to a lot of things. Yes, James has poor customer service skills but consumers...especially those with allergies need to do their due diligence and READ the BOX. I’m not a makeup user or a James Charles fan. I am just tired of people trying to make a name for themselves by attacking others 🙄😒

      Being allergic to one thing doesn't mean you're going to be allergic to everything, you can be allergic to bananas and but be able to eat any other fruit with no issue. You typically do not know that you are allergic to something, until after you encounter it and by then it is too late, your body has already responded. For example, I didn't find out that I was allergic to bismuth oxychloride until after I used a palette that includes that ingredient because none of the other palettes I own had that ingredient in it, so I never would have found out had I never encountered a eye shadow that included that ingredient. I found that out this year, I've been wearing eye shadow for 12-13 years. That was a mind blowing experience for me because I've never had an allergic reaction to any form of makeup ever.

      The thing is, the box never said (besides a tiny little icon) that these pegments are not FDA approved and can cause staining and possible allergic reaction in some people.
      James should have covered his ass like J* and Manny did.

      Sometimes you can't teach experience to a certain level. You have to experience it and not just read about it. I agree with you that James had no experience with makeup formulation. He himself has no knowledge whatsoever before this. It's about being mature enough to take responsibility which James surely don't have in the way he responded to Cotee

    You're absolutely right (like usually :D)! Beauty influencers and makeup addicts will know about these kind of pressed pigments, the staining etc, but we are actually the minority of makeup consumers. Most of the people, especially young ones (and James Charles is followed mostly by them) probably don't know about this. The girl overreacted a little bit, but she is kind of right. James should've handled it more professionally, and being young is not a excuse in my opinion. If you decide to collab with a brand and formulate makeup, educate yourself and your consumers as well. Love ya Jen, you're the best :)

    I think this video was super well spoken and calm and I loved that it wasn’t totally just bashing James. She tried to almost see the other side of things and not make him out to be a monster which with the video from the beginning of the video she totally could have done. I don’t totally agree with every point she made but it’s hard to be angry about that when the video was so damn good 😂 which kinda speaks to social media comment arguments in general but that’s a whole other topic for another day ✌🏻

  • @lakemi

    I definitely remember the warning on the Electric palette! I think Morphe should have done better in this situation. There should be a proper written warning on the package (or there needs to be a symbol used across the board for this like the little pot with 12M or 6M on it). They should have also let James know that he should be stating these facts in his videos. I have a lot of allergies and my skin gets stained from a lot of stuff so I know to check for stuff that can irritate me (food, makeup, metal buttons on jeans....) but I have been dealing with this forever and I think some of his younger fans might not have the same amount of experience.
    I also think his response was inappropriate. When I used to work customer service, the main rule when someone was unhappy with a product or service was to first off apologize that they had a negative experience regardless of whether it was your fault or whether you are actually sorry. If you don't, people will get riled up because they're already upset and for whatever reason, if you don't say "oh I am sorry that happened" they take it to mean that you don't really care.

      It is on the box, (via a little pic of an eye w/ a strike mark through it) BUT.... no one would know that unless/until they bought it AND hopefully looked at the tiny letters on the back. Which is why James should have mentioned they aren't considered 'eye safe' in one of his many videos, posts, snaps & promotions. It's a legal disclaimer Morphe should have insisted he make, imho. That said, regardless of her rude & over the top video... his response was so unprofessional, condescending, manipulative & rude, phew... unacceptable imho. ESP when he is the one who made the mistake of not only not mentioning it, BUT in several videos using those specific shades/pigments considered not eye-safe ON his eyes w/ zero disclaimers. Idk. Imho he is still deflecting in his response above.

    My qualm with James saying that “pressed pigments stain, its common knowledge” (to be clear this is a paraphrase not his original tweet) is that in his own video he said “I didn’t know much about pressed pigments until I started formulating them.” To me those statements are contradictory. I had no idea about oil based eye shadow makeup removers being the things needed to remove pressed pigments! 😱 I own 4 eye shadow palettes (1 is close to being thrown away as it’s pretty much gone), so I’m not a make up junky. I watch beauty videos to learn new techniques and some to check out palettes and their ingredients, but it’s not done super avidly as I’m very busy with work and am preparing to enter nursing school. I appreciate content like yours Jen as you keep things professional and informative. Thank you for all you do for us average consumers. • @gobgoerrsarah

    Jen, I disagree that it’s his responsibility. He should have given a warning but also there is a chance that anything will cause a reaction. I’ve had an allergic reaction to products before and had companies tell me I should have tested on a patch of skin and they’re not liable. Which is completely true and I would then not use their product or any like it because I understand I developed an allergy. He also is collaborating with the palette and it’s not his brand. He is not a customer service person. If she was concerned and wanted the company to refund or something she should have contacted morphe, not make a video ranting (even if that is what she does). She exploited the situation for attention, because it is her job to get views. Her response was also extremely aggressive and frankly annoying for what her reaction actually was. She had one possible hive. If she was truly allergic she would have had a lot more irritation than staining. Very mild reaction at the most.
