- A quick tour through my backyard greenhouse and shade box. The challenges of summer heat and a pesky rodent eating my plants. #cactus #plants #succulent
AWESOME Greenhouse update tour Dave, your collection is looking AMAZING, but so sorry to hear you have a Rodent eating some of your plants, rats and mice can be such a nuisance, I had a problem with mice eating pieces from my cacti last year, I wish you could send me some of the sunshine and heat over to Ireland and I could send you some of the clouds and rain over from Ireland haha, you have a really beautiful collection, and so nice and tidy and arranged too, and WOW with all your incredible seedlings, thanks so much for sharing the fantastic update with us Dave and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Sunday XXXX
Thanks so much for the kind words Lyn! I’ll definitely trade some heat and sun for some rain! Lol. The rodent issue is a new one for me. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I know you are really busy at work and dealing with the Facebook creep! We all appreciate you for who you are. PLANT POWER back to you as well. 🌵🌵🌵💚
Beautiful collection and so wonderfully neat and tidy! It's a real shame about that rodent damage and I hope you can find a solution. Its so frustrating seeing chunks bitten out of beautiful plants you've put time and effort (and money!) into growing ❤ 🌵 🌸
Thanks so much! Especially the seedlings! I germinated just under two years ago. Hard to see them get ripped apart! Argh. 🌵🌵🌵🌵💚
I hope you catch him. Your collection is so beautiful. I’d be so sad too. Good luck and post an update when you do!
Thank you so much! Will do. I’m losing too many offsets, fruits and seedlings! 🌵🌵🌵💚😤
beautiful collection!
Appreciate that! 🌵🌵💚
Nice collection.
Thank you so much! 🌵🌵
I wonder if the rodents are eating the cactus in order to get some moisture? Maybe they need a little bowl of water to divert their attention from the cactus but then again, they might get a little too comfortable!
Thanks for the comment. Definitely like the moisture of the cactus. I have to plum trees that had fallen fruit. I need to be super tidy next year lol. Hopefully I can limit the damage! 🌵🌵🌵🌵💚
Yummy silver torch 🌵 🐀
lol. Yep. Was eating them like they were candy! Crazy. 🌵💚
I recommend you get a fan and run it 24/7. Without the two fans i have in mine, theyd probably boil by the end of the day
I’m getting a few solar fans set up. I agree. It’s like a hot box at times! 🌵🌵🌵🌵💚
"not as organized..." Me: sees perfection. 👀 ;)
Thank you I appreciate that! 🌵🌵🌵🌵💚
Sorry about the rats. They can be such a nuisance and menace . I have them in my garden and so I know how annoying they can be. That said, YIU have a fantastic collection and they are well arranged
Thank you so much! I appreciate it. Just trying to limit the damage they can do! 🌵🌵💚
lay out some Irish Spring soap around the greenhouse. Rats hate that stuff. Shred it up and sprinkle it aroun them pots see if that helps.
Thank you so much for the tip! Want it gone so bad! 🌵🌵🌵💚
That doesn't work if he's eating silver torch
Its super hot and blue sky all week here, today especially scorching. But nothing short of the typical summer. I finished up on nights today, so by the time i woke up this afternoon, i noticed i had a bit of sunburn on my Copiapoa Tenuisima and Parodia Occulta. 😡 They will be fine, but it still bothers me!!! These plants have all been out in the summer socrching sun all spring and summer long.... why did they suddenly get scorched today? The Parodia gets burnt, and it will show.... bums me out. Its still a beautiful plant, it just bums me out that it shows a little sun burn... especially after it being in direct sun all summer long and being fine, otherwise. Poor little bugger just flowered last week, and is showing so many fresh, new spines and arioles. Now this sudden sun trauma may cut these plant's growth season short, and send them into dormancy now, instead of giving me at least one more good month of September growth, before i must coax them into their winter dormancies. I need to get me (or build) a little greenhouse by next season, *cuz im definitely in need of some serious shade cloth!!!* Dont want my little prickly pals to get burnt ever again!!! Shade cloth is clutch... Let the good sun light come thru for their health, but block the bad sun light out for their health!
🍻Heres to keeping our prickly pals as happy as we can!! Water em, feed em, and grow em!!!
Lets go!!!! 🌵
I agree with you big time! I have had similar issues. When the temperature dropped they were getting hit harder. Don’t know if it is different angle for different times of the year. But the cacti I have in my greenhouse and in my open air shade box both have 50% shade cloth. They LOVE it! It will make such a difference for you! Thanks for sharing! 🌵🌵🌵🌵💚
Hey Bud!!! I love you being so Humane~~But get a cpl of rat traps with some peanut butter on the snapper & you will be good to go again & your babies will DEFINITELY Thank You for it!!!
Your greenhouse is REALLY looking good!! So good, in fact, I just showed my friend, that just put my new greenhouse up about a month ago, this video so he could see ur shelving n stuff so he can get me some more room!!! He watched it all, said No Prob & is actually working on it as I type! All I had B4 was 1 layer of 6 & 4 foot tables going around. He's making me a bottom row & above the table row now too so I CAN BUY MORE PLANTS!!! YEY!!! 😊
Thanks again for another great vid!! Keep up the great work!!!
SINCERELY, ANITA 🌵✌️😊
Thank you so much. I agree. I need to get rid of them! Too hard to come out and see plants ripped apart! So glad to hear that you like the setup. The more room the better. I already have big plans to get a huge shade area in back yard to expand my growing space too. More plants! lol. Happy growing season and hope your greenhouse works awesome for you!!!! 🌵🌵🌵🌵💚
Such a bummer. I've been there, lost some astros and a Perez de la Rosa to a rat last year. Now that I have a greenhouse (I think the exact same one as you), this is what I did-
I lined the entire door frame with velcro, then my wife stitched the other side of the velcro to a door-sized cutout of screen (like from a screen door). Since it closes on all sides of the door frame nothing can get in through there and I don't have to worry about closing the door at night, which is good because it can get quite hot here. The velcro also makes it fairly easy to get in and out of. Sure, a determined rodent could probably quite easily chew through the screen, but I think they tend to go for what they can most easily access. Fingers crossed, I haven't had any issues with things getting into the greenhouse since doing this (it's actually helped cut down on a lot of insects being in there as well).
Good luck, hopefully you can get this little guy somewhere far away from your collection!
Thanks for the tip. I definitely need to do something. Can’t close door because so hot here too. Have to get creative like you. Put way to much work in to raising the seedlings and have them eaten like that! Argh.

Rainbow cactus: Echinocereus rigidissimus
Yep! Love those cacti. Have over 300 of them started. 100 at almost 2 years old. One of the easiest for me to grow so far! 🌵🌵🌵🌵💚
Oh my!! I didn't know rats eat cacti!!!
Yes they do! I have peanut butter everywhere trying to catch them and they still eat the pups and seedlings! Argh. 🌵🌵🌵💚
Merci pour les photos dommage pas en français merci
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it🌵🌵💚
The only thing that made my trap to work was to have gummybears because they had realy tug the candy. I live in Sweden so I dont know if u got those.
We have those for sure! Never even thought about that! Lol. Worth a try! I will do anything! 🌵🌵🌵💚
You need to trap to kill otherwise you never get rid of them. I have huge mouse not rats. My husband said you can tell by the shape of the nose. Try putting peanut butter on the trap. I get the kind that I don’t have to use my hand to remove them when they get trapped. Tom cat and Victor makes them. Good luck
Argh! They are driving me crazy! I need to get rid of them! Thanks for the tips! 🌵🌵🌵💚
Where are you located?
Las Vegas Nevada
Did you put something tasty in the live trap and put it by the door?
I did. I still am! Argh it won’t just get in there! Lol
the green house doesnot have a door? rats are very active during the night.also make sure there are no spaces between the pots with cactus that have spikes that are protecting the other softer cactus. the rat might be able to go throw them. i have also seen you donot have any traps set. so i donot know how you are intending to catch the rodent.
I do have a door. It’s been so hot out and I leave for work at 4:30. Turns into a hot box in there. I have traps everywhere. By almost all entry points. That’s a good point about space between pots. Will tighten them up! Wish me luck! 🌵🌵💚
Beautiful! great job I really love all of them! I really like the SanPedro? specimen. Impressive how you know their names! 🪴🦠🌵🌿
Thank you so much! Still working on some of the pronunciation lol! Love the San Pedro! Check on it every day! 🌵🌵🌵🌵💚
