Isn't wonderful that we ordinary humans get a chance to listen to this exceptionally talented musician and feel like we're buddies?
Hear hear!!
My thoughts exactly. It’s like stopping by to shoot the breeze with an old friend. Leland is a natural for this medium. As one of the old guys semi home bound during this pandemic his daily updates are much appreciated.
Yes.
YES!!!!!
Absolutely! it is such a wonderful silver lining to this current world problems.
Quite a few years ago, I was returning from a business trip. On a flight from Memphis to Minneapolis I ended up sitting next to Bob Babbitt. He was on his way to a gig in Canada. We exchanged small talk. He was curious about my new iPad. He asked what I did. More small talk. I asked what he did. When he told me his name, I stammered "Standing in the Shadows of Motown." His eyes lit up and, for the rest of the flight, he told me stories from his career. It was magical. One piece of advice he passed along - "Do you know how to tell it's time to get a new manager? When you ask him about expenses he wants you to pay for and he says, 'Shut up and play your f'ing bass, Bob.'"
Dave, Thanks for posting your story. You experienced the Bob Babbitt love of telling stories. As his younger brother, I heard many of them as he went on for hours without stop. I was probably his most appreciative listener. He is in my thoughts every day.
Lee Sklar apologizing for a little clam while graciously spending time with the rest of us? Talk about class. What a super cool human this guy is.
I 💕 the way U play along.
Wow. Thank U👍🦋💕🌈🌞✨️
Gotta get up and and dance. Great! Danced all the time with my husband to that song. Thank you, !!!!!
Love ❤❤ that bass line. I look for badass baseline songs of 70s 80s 90s cause I CANT play a lick on a guitar but I can keep up on a bass. Helped a few bar bands with their sets when bassist got DUI or other charges. 😅even the dummies want to get funky I know I do I'm dancing in my chair at work on my lunch hour..
Oh My Goodness, Thank You! And, Of Course, So Very Cool!!!
I love your shout out to the first responders. I am not one, but we don't hear enough about what they are doing for the rest of us.
So glad you're getting with Rick Beato - I watch every one of his vids - he's great! I look forward to watching what you two guys do.
@@rikkousa Yeah, cool human being as long as you don't question his "authoritay."
@@fretbuzz59 WTF?
@@hugolafhugolaf One time I corrected him on something that was fairly incidental. Another person chimed in to support me. Rick didn't take too kindly to it. I saw a similar attitude from Rick when someone else was the slightest bit critical of one of his instructional videos. When a reply begins "sorry bro", you know attitude will be forthcoming.
Can't get enough of watching Lee on Bass.
Thanks for another video to make my day again today. It looks like your friend made a friend....
I went 15 years without a bass to play, due to having to sell my gear in hard time. So when I got one 6 months ago, I was ecstatic, and the first full song that I learned was Rubberband Man. Such a killer part, and really fun to play.
"Sorry?" It was a gift, as are all your videos, Lee.
Love this song-Before it was in Infinity Wars. You outta play with the Spinners when they tour. There is one founding member. Also help the brothers out if you have a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame vote!
I been loving watching the Lee Sklar videos and listening to his stories. Years ago, I was the backline tech for a band called Tower of Power. We just arrived at the hotel casino the band was playing in Kentucky. As usual, my first stop was the buffet. So, I’m sitting alone eating and I see Tower of Power leader, Emilio Castillo, talking to someone. After awhile, Emilio comes over to me and says, “You see that guy I was talking to?” I said yes. Emilio tells me, “That’s Bob Babbitt.” I said, “Bob Babbitt from Motown??? He’s white!” I mean, I knew of Joe Massina, but a I didn’t know Bob Babbitt was white. lol. Anyhow, I asked Emilio to introduce me to him and we had a nice conversation. What a humble guy. Bob said he drove up from Nashville to see Rocco play. And since Lee Sklar and I have a few mutual friends, I hope to meet Lee Sklar someday.
I absolutely LOVE the emotion and passion this guy has when he plays.. like you can just see it amd feel it❤
Lee's time machine..thank you..
You played on SO many of my “pull over to the side of the road, close your eyes and listen” songs. 👍
Bob Babbitt is also one of my favorite bassists too! Midnight Train To Georgia, Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours, War, The Tears Of A Clown, Scorpio, Mercy Mercy Me, Inner City Blues, Little Town Flirt, Band Of Gold, I Got A Name, Touch Me In The Morning, Every Kind Of People, Cool Jerk, Give Me Just A Little More Time, Smiling Faces, Then Came You, Games People Play, Kiss And Say Goodbye, After The Lovin', Copacabana, Ball Of Confusion, Just My Imagination Running Away With Me and Main Ingredient's cover of I Just Don't Want To Be Lonely. - imagine playing to those hits! Not only that, he was very integral to the two of the greatest Schools of Soul - Motown and Philly! WHAT AN AMAZING CAREER THIS MAN HAD!
AWESOME THANK U 4 FOCUSING on the FUNK BROTHERS and shouting out James n Bob, Dennis Coffey is amazing jewel here in Detroit have seen him live many times, i wish i could have spent more time at his recent bar gigs in the city we really had a economic depression here 2006-2015.. Thankfully i got to spend a lot of serious time with Rodriguez late 90's and early 00's.. He had a contract w Sony then making him lay low but we had so many experiences together, he taught me a lot in various ways and i recorded some of our times together back then shared a few on my channel.. I lived in the Cass Corridor of Detroit and hung out there often, now live in the island city of Hamtramck inside Detroit where Dennis has played the classic Labor Day fest often he shreds.. Great video series PEACE
Bob Babbitt was incredible, thank you for honouring him.
What a gift you are to all of us!
My Son loves this tune hes 28 and found it on his own.. This is great thank you !
True musicians can mess up and get right back in the pocket. Love this song.
Can't wait for the RIck B talk. Looking forward to the coffee book. And no, thaking first responders and front liners will never get old.
Thank you for the smiles today.
Love the feel of that bass line.
Rediscovered this. Such a great song.
Can any song just make you want to smile, and boogie more than this. It was a joy watching and listening to you playing it. Took me right back, dancing in the Jr High cafeteria, joyful. Thanks for sharing it.
One of my favorite songs of all time.
Great job !!!!!!!!
Rubber band Man was responsible for my getting a speeding ticket on I-57 back in December of 1976. Driving home from college the song came on the radio and the groove was so infectious I put my foot down, eventually catching the attention of an ambitious Illinois state trooper. So I returned to Chicago 75 bucks lighter. Great tune, though! (If you’re purchasing it be sure to get the extended 7 minute version.)
Le, you Rock, you Groove, you are THE BASS player. A Great Big Thank You.
How can a genius be so humble, and talk about his little mistakes in such a sweet way.
Just had to revisit this, since you were talking about it recently as well. 😊 For sure absolutely loved this!
Met Bob in Nashville he sat next to me while I played drums and told me whole story of rubber band man. Philly sound and the Tom Bell chart. What perfection. Love your stories. Btw we met on a Mike Post Session. Willie Ornelas was the Drunmer at universal a team session. I was a young inspiring guy. You took time to talk with me. Thanks Lee!
I will never listen to that song the same way ever again!! Faannnntttaassttiiiccc!!!
Good evening, Lee! Thanks, again, for these wonderful posts.
Rick sent me! Leland, Sir! You get your own share of "Have to pull over, close my eyes, and just dig it!" from so many of us yourself! Thank you too for keepin' the music ... going :-)
Boy, are you balm for the soul. Thanks for doing this, Lee.
Leland is the best. Low F was full of soul.
The Judith Owen video was really fantastic, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Thank you three times!
I love The Spinners. I love Leland Sklar. This was magical....
I was in a band called Two Foot Daddy in Branson, MO. Bob would often sit in with us. Our regular bass player, J.J. Jones, had to miss a couple of shows so he got scheduled Bob as a sub. J.J. taped our gigs from the weekend before and transcribed all of his parts including a few solos. Four sets a night; two nights-8 hours total of music. He gave the charts to Babbitt and the man came in and sight read all of it, flawlessly, the following weekend on our gigs...including J.J.'s solos (which were pretty complex and hip). It was truly amazing.
Thank you Leland for your stories...!
I love the design of that bass!
Leland Sklar, you truly are a force of nature!!!!!
It makes you an even bigger human that you would share your reverence for Bob Babbit. I’m sure he’s eternally flattered (and would never hold any mistake over your head), Mr. Sklar.
Ahhh Yeeaahh! That digs a serious hole in the pocket. Loved it Lee!!
Love your channel and Ricks as well.
Very cool letter............thanks for sharing.
Enjoyed today's video. Love The spinners and that song. Have a great weekend, but I'll be checking for more from you. Thanks for entertaining us with your stories and your amazing playing...it does help during this difficult time. Be safe
Great song, great group ! Thom Bell is one of my favorite writer/producers and nobody sounds like Philippe Wynne !
getting to watch one of my main bass inspirations honor another of my main bass inspirations, and then be so humble and willing to admit a very human mistake and work at it? Priceless.
One of those songs I could listen to all day and never get tired of - you did it so well
Makes something so difficult look easy
Fabulous - love that song
Hey Leland... Thanks so much for this, you're helping me get through this with all the stories. It keeps my mind off the day to day stuff. I look forward to them everyday.
I love the fact that I get to sit one on one with one of the greatest bassists of all time.
With exception of those horrible ads for "mens soap" I really LOVE these videos!
Love it! Would also love "Her Town, Too." Thanks so much for sharing your days with us.
I look forward to the video with Rick. I like how you play without the straps! And I look forward to the coffee table book also. Thanks Again Lee!
Awesome! Merveilleux!
Leland. WOW.. really love hearing you work through something as great and iconic as rubber band man... I love it.
I’m a trumpet player and I still watch your videos.
So much fun watching you. It’s like being in the room with you. Looking forward to seeing more!
Your videos always make me feel good and you reminded me today how you do anything is how you do everything. You going back and correcting that riff was a prime example. Keep it up man and enjoy the senior hours.
My Go To Channel!! And you and Rick will be out of this world!! Thanx for great content!!
I love this song. Great choice
Thanks for sharing this Lee. Just a fun, jamming bass part.
We dig you, bro! Thank you for just being YOU! You inspire me, you make me want to strive to be my best as a musician and as a person. Thank you for being here. Rowland
Saw The Spinners at the county fair in my state thirty years ago, great fun, especially this song.
Awesome to see you work through that. Thanks for making the rest of us feel human. disregard the 10 dislikes who were obviously after a lingerie video.
What a joy to listen but even more to watch you play and seeing you having so much fun playing
Loved the Babbit homage, and love how you can screw up and not make it a big deal. It helps us all breathe easier with our mistakes as well. And it actually enriches the performance, really. Beautiful!!
This song is just one of the best but people don't get how COOL and Killer this song was.
Wow what a pocket on the backside of the chorus...sometimes the anchorman gets to steer the ship. These are appreciated my brother.
Was having a pretty crappy week until this video graced my life! Thanks Leland!
Love the Babbit line, love the email, love the f**k up, love that you left it in. Thanks, love from Liverpool ✌🏼
Loved the way Bob Babbitt spoke about other bass players... you, Jamerson, etc.
I love these videos, your stories and the honest mistakes.. we're only human!!! Keep these videos coming Lee!!
So much rhythm, grace and debonair for one man? Sounds like Leland himself!
Leland I met you a decade or so ago at NAMM. You were so gracious and kind. I’m such a fan of yours! I’m a musician in LA and write and play pedal steel, guitar and banjo..I would love to share my music with you
"I never like to rehearse my spontaneity" - almost a Yogi Berra quote!
Coffee table book....Yes please! Such beautiful deadening of the bass notes Mr Sklar.
What a treasure this video is ! Thanks so much Leland!
What David wrote.
You are a gift to us!
I saw The Spinners at Sheik's Lounge in Orlando in 1978. Great show!
Bob's line on "Inner City Blues" -- whoa!
I have been a life long fan of the spinners and loved you playing it! Thanks for sharing!
Big fun. Loved this.
BLESSED. BE. SIR. AWESOME. WAW. TNKS😊
This channel has definitely taken off in the last 4-5 weeks. Easiest way to tell is how many ads are now popping up! Let's see if you can hit 100,000 subscribers by the end of May! So happy I came across this near the start of the pandemic. Its been one of the things I've looked forward to doing every day.
I didn't know about Bob Babbitt or any of the other Funk Brothers (except Jamerson) until I watched Standing on the Shoulders of Motown. I looked up some of the songs he recorded on and was so glad that one of my favorite R&B songs of all time Midnight Train to Georgia was one of them. His playing on that track blows my mind.
It's crazy how easy just picking up a song is for him. I only wish I was born with that kind of talent.
Lee, fantastic song, great choice and you are human, thanks for sharing, I never tire of you life experiences, respect and a true gent. Keep on trucking.
Lee, thank you for this! After another week working in news, that put a smile on my face. Spinners and Earth Wind and Fire never fail to pick up the mood. Be well!
I just cant take my eyes off that beautiful bass! I think it just made my G.A.S list.
Leland... you're truly one of the greatest bass players of all-time
Thanks for sharing that with us
Thanks Lee, for showing mud-tier bass players like myself that A-plus level players like you can make mistakes too. I really appreciate the honesty.
