- Explore why migration is so taxing and dangerous for birds, and what ways we can help birds on their journey.
--
Nearly 200 species of songbirds migrate south for winter, some traveling up to 7,000 miles. No easy task, the annual journey is dangerous to birds due to landscape change -- so much so, that only half the birds that migrate south will return home for spring. Alyssa Klavans details why bird migration is so taxing and how we can assist our chirping friends.

This video made me realize for the first time that the movement of migratory birds is not just long, but at the risk of their lives. We also learned how little we humans think about nature through the migration of migratory birds. Therefore, I became interested in migratory birds that I was not interested in through this video, and I wondered what kind of migratory birds I was passing through our country. And in the future, I think it would be nice if we had more interest in ways in which we can coexist with nature.
great video - wish more people could see it
I sent to some people
This clip made me think more about nature, including birds. I think that the factors that prevent birds from moving, such as pesticides or tall buildings, are due to the development of civilization. The development of civilization is good, but I think it shouldn't go too far. I think we should consider nature more, like the way it came out in the video.
This video gave me an opportunity to think about the environment.
I, who didn't really think about the environment, heard the story of birds and learned a lot about the environment and the path of movement.
It is a video that played while leaving the text of the textbook during the school class, which helped me study.
We need to develop an idea of how to preserve the environment.
I felt sorry for the migratory birds when i saw this ted. I didnt know that migratory birds were at this much risk as they moved.
From now on i wilk protect the enviroment for migratory birds and protect them.
I LOVE the animation in this video! Also the information is very cool! :)
If humans are the cause, we are also the solution.
I'm glad there were some suggestions at the end. Too often I see media/literature that berates humanity's effect on the enviroment/nature to such an extent that many people frame green efforts as the whim of conceited hippies.
innovation is gonna happen kid can't stop it
An upvote after 2 minutes? Impressive ;-)
@@C345OFR whatchu mean?
thanks
I feel sorry and envious for bird at the same time, because they can't just stay wherever they want to be like us in the harsh time of the year. But in the other side, they get to fly and live somewhere else at least once a year. Anyway, educating video as usual. Thank you for sharing it with us!
an excellent video. Well done
Thank you for your amazing and useful videos
No wonder there was a whole animated movie about duck migrations!
Thanks for the video friends... thats knowledge and awakening ! Time to act friends..
Amazing video 😍
Great video!
At first, I was very interested in preparing for the migration of migratory birds, but later I was very sad to learn that the migration of migratory birds was a dangerous journey due to modern natural destruction. I was also very frustrated that development and development had a bad effect on many ecosystems around us, including migratory birds, as well as on nature.Through this video, I hope that there will be no more reckless development for many animals and plants, including migratory birds, which will suffer from natural destruction due to development. And I hope that eco-friendly development can be made sooner. Above all, I will make efforts to revive the environment.
A very important video
I do agree.
The people has the huge contribution on this issue.
Good video, highlights the real problem of agricultural practices and urban sprawl.
"Birds help with insect control, pollination and dispersing seeds throughout the landscape. " disbursing = spending money
Including the crows, many of the birds kinds spend time in South Africa.
I thought that the migration of birds was simple but, it was not. it was rather complicated. I was surprised that because of human development, birds lost their way. I hope many people could consider birds more by watching their video.
I now do all these things
Before I watch this video, I didn't know that migrating birds were at risk. Birds take pesticides as they move around and lose their habitat in land development. It was a pity that the cause of this result was people. In order to solve this problem, there is a soultion, but i think it is necessary to help the government implement it more positively. I hope this will help the birds to migrate safety.
Would be possible to translate this video into Spanish? Is a great asset for bringing awareness into action if it is in our native languague!! Thanks!!
Thx god i subscribed.
This video alerted me with new knowledge. Unlike my thoughts, I come to know that the migratory birds are intellectually preparing a lot to move and we, the humans' desires were the one that unintentionally impede their movement. Till now, I've never thought of a world without birds, but after watching this video, I come to face with serious problem and thought what the world will be like when the birds are not around us. (Maybe the world will be very horrible.) So, I would like to take actions for our better world.
Before I watched this clip, I never thought migrating birds was dangerous. The migration of birds was more dangerous than I thought. But people have a bad effect on migrating birds. The world will be confused if migrating birds that give us advantages are put in danger. So, we need to help migrating birds finish their journey safe.
just pointing it out :D throwing it out there for the less observant :D
I learned from this video that migratory birds are suffering from human land development. But it wasn't just the damage the migratory birds suffered. I was shocked that this was damaging to humans as well and that it was eventually becoming a vicious circle. There are government support and solutions to improve these problems, but they are still serious. I am really grateful to know these matters now and I am please the fact that they can be improved by only my efforts. So I'll start by breaking the habit of turning on the lights for long periods of time until the late night for migratory birds.
Do a video abaout the venomous bird
Poor birdies :c
Give it Oscar
I didn't know birds looked at stars to navigate. Interesting.
I love birds their my favorite animals
Maybe reupload the video will be helpful to get more views ... this is really informative and simple
yup! We're waking up
Michelle Snow does the best narration
Remember to check for any bird flu’s going on in your area before hanging feeders in your garden!
First frog, then Bee, and now bird. Every animal in trouble except human
Most of us, yes... But some people do their best to repair damages made by ignorant/arrogant people!
This world need people with goodwill more than people who hates people with "badwill"...
As we know, birds travel on their own. If you look at the sky, you can often see it. But their number is decreasing, too. Why is that? I knew that maybe it was because of us. Just as we are sensitive to sudden changes when we travel, so are birds. The act of removing their habitat to improve our quality of life is a very serious change for them. If the population of birds decreases, our lives will definitely show signs of change. We have to move to prevent this. Who knows if our small actions, even small movements, will contribute greatly to the bird's journey? Therefore, we must act.
Birds use stars to navigate??
Can you do Cinderella
A 5 ounce bird could not Cary a one pound coconut!
yep, I agree with you, I am just worried about humans :)
good nice wonderful ✋👍🌹
Nope, I only replied to what I wanted to. What you thought was probably the strong point of your comment, I found to be ignorant and unworthy of a response. It is clear to me that you don't care about the facts, you only want to argue your own position (even though you claim that's what I'm doing).
All I want to do is learn the most I can about the subject and share what I know, I don't have an agenda. I'm not arguing with someone who does have an agenda. Sorry.
Again... way to go, humans
This is not really a problem... Most of the viewers are usually from North America.
I believe these videos are made by self-contribution, but I am not sure. If you want to educate us, make your own youtube videos and submit them to TED-Ed!
Sad for today's birds, but I'm not too worried about the long-term. Nature will find a way to adapt, just as it has countless times before man existed.
😢😢
So?
I want to note as a Citizen Scientist for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, feeding and providing nest boxes for birds needs to be done in particular ways, otherwise efforts can be wasteful or worthless to the birds who need it. Check out The Cornell Lab's Project NestWatch and Project FeederWatch for more information on how to do those activities safely and properly.

One billion bird deaths per year due to building collision? Doesn't this number seem completely ludacris ?
you're point?
🐦😊
Poor birds 😢 putting up feeders for them ❤️
Poor birds :(
Humans always find a way to hurt the nature ☹️ poor birds, good that you started with an analogy about road trip. I can't imagine how much birds suffer through light, radiation, and noise pollution 🥺
On the other hand, some of the immigrant birds gain extra kilograms.
А?
if all animals are in trouble, then we are in trouble too.
This is very North America-Centric. European species don't migrate to South America (Obviously). The majority of migratory birds in Europe migrate to Africa in Winter and back to Europe in the summer.
Is the pink background and shimmery cursive writing really necessary?
This is so sad....
You completely ignored what I wrote and read what you wanted to.
Huh?
"your"
Do birds really sing? Here in Australia all they do is scream 😂
2.o
Waaaaaaaaaaaooooooow
Birds are my favorite animal.
I don't want to lose them🐦😢

Not quite, I don't let people play psychologist with me either, I'm too much of a free thinker for someone to think they can get into my head. Perhaps before dismissing what I said you should analyze it from my point of view and actually watch what they've put out lately. It is slowly converging to a less educational and more opinionated theme.
TheElTiticaca I only ever hear republicans say this
Not using pesticides won't happen since we need our food not eaten by bacteria and bugs.
+LokyNoKey we still use pesticides... just not ones that kill everything
First poor frogs... Now, poor birds. What's next? :(
You continue attempting to create an argument with me without analyzing what I have said. Perhaps you should compare TED's newest videos with their older ones and my point is valid instead of trying to use poor linguistic skills to portray yourself as an academic in an attempt to credit yourself. I have no desire to argue with you, especially when you do not consider analyzing what was said in the first place.
Yes... With the exclusion of their pet animals!
Sadly.
3:52 is that lady pregnant?
It seems to me that humans are killing just about every type of animal.
Poor birds
The best thing we can do to help the birds, frogs and all the other species, is stop breeding.
Drunk refer mean level act weather appoint trend confusion.
Because we are the one causing trouble
Poor humankind
1% of body weight is lost in 1 hour while in a journey.☺
Biodiversity? Do you mean ethnical diversity? Or global religions and cultures, maybe?
Don't feed the trolls.
i know man.. who says it should be good or bad... besides we have all those bibles, qurans, toras etc. to tell us whats good and whats bad.. cause you know... we cant possibly figure this out by ourselves... PS: funny how many comments my original comment sparked :D you gotta love religion man.. gotta love it :D
I hope one billion birds hitting buildings each year is an exaggeration.
I am not religious... In fact, I hate religions!
I don't hate religious people, only religions and its practice...
How can you tell? Is it a good thing or a bad thing? Do you mean muslim or Arab? There is no allusion to religion in this video...
It's not opinionated though. They are clearly stating facts. To ignore these facts by calling them opinions is not freethinking, it's being closed minded.
For every problem there is a solution. Deal with it.
but just don't divide by zero ... that doesn't work.
Why are we such douchebags?
It seems like every ted ed or talk I click on ends up being about how evil humans are. Isn't there anything else to talk about?
Anti-corporate liberal propaganda
The birdies are immigrants
why don''t we take bikini bottom and push it somewhere else!
This is utterly sad.
