Electronic 4X4 is trouble waiting to happen. Excellent work installing the manual transfer case. Nice to see another video from y'all. Thanks for sharing.
Since you had a problem with the transfer case you might want to take a look at the A750F transmission connector if you have an automatic transmission. I had a shift solenoid 1 fault and it wouldn't shift to first gear and was not wanting to move. The wire seal over the solenoid 1 pin leaked and the water corroded the very thin pin and it broke off so i had to replace the internal transmission wiring harness. I was able to take the plug apart and and clean the corrosion and remove the broken pin, but I also bought a replacement plug just in case. Anyone that off-roads with a 2005-2015 Toyota with a A750E or A750F transmission should pull this plug and inspect it for corrosion or you risk getting stranded. The leak at the molded silicone wire seal which can be further sealed with the addition of a little RTV with a cotton swab or tooth pick.
I did this swap on my 4 runner, it is the best thing you can do to make your Toyota more reliable. The electric shift plastic box on the stock t cases is and was a bad idea and design.
Pretty awesome! Dig my Gen 1 and seeing stuff is cool. And the Land Rover jacket was cool also. We also have an LR3 which is another rockin' rig. Keep it up!
We got a 2007 fj cruiser transfer case that was already used. Not 100% on the part number but you can look on “car -part.com” and see locations around you that have it.
Hey everyone, we just realized that we did not show what spacer you should get. So here is the link to the correct rear drive shaft spacer. We went with the 1.25in trail-gear.com/longfield-tacoma-driveline-spacer.html
Oh thanks For the link appreciated. So one of those is all I needed ? I will probably be doing the same thing On my 2002 Sequoia. And just an fj transfer case which I did find some.
@@store8294 3rd generation 4Runner. And there is a code for the transfer case switch you want a hundred percent manual. I believe the code has an f on it I hadn't recall when I was looking all up. There are two different types of 4Runner transfer cases and the 3rd generation. Make sure you get the right one that's a hundred percent manual cuz otherwise you're getting one with the bunch of switches on it more to go wrong.
I was thinking the same thing. Thanks for asking this question. At least w/ the 2001-2004 Sequoia T-case, you can get out of 4 Lo if the electronic 4WD actuator goes bad.
If anyone else is facing this issue and can’t/ hasn’t been able to swap to the manual transfer case. You can usually pop the transfer case actuator off and clean all the water and grease out and scrub the contacts clean to get everything back working and get back into the right gear!
Their harness wont work on the Sequoia because it’s made for 4runner so you just have to do a little trick to a wires, let me know if you need help with that
That came out looking great! I swapped out my tundra’s automatic transmission for a 5-speed manual and manual J shifter so had to go through a lot of the same steps. How did it go with getting the A.D.D. system working, or did you just delete it? I wired a rocker switch to engage and disengage my A.D.D. but plan on completely deleting the system and converting to manual locking hubs.
No. The shift rods are in a completely different location inside the cases. On top in the manual actuated cases. In the center of the actuated cases, so that the electronic actuators hanging off the back of the cases are lined up w the shift rods. The only way to make an actuated case manual would be to break the actuators off the back of the case, an then add cable shifters grabbing onto the back of those protruding rods. But you might need to add some sort of plate or block with an O-ring to replicate the sealing effect of those actuators. Some older 4x4s came stock w cable-shifted t-cases.
@@overlandingworld that’s not bad at all! Would be an awesome upgrade if/when my actuator goes out. I don’t off-road mine (haven’t had the chance) but budget fix nonetheless!
The FJ manual transmission T-case has a center differential, and is the same length as the sequoia t-cases ( no driveshaft spacer needed), BUT it has the wrong input shaft. Toyota manual transmissions and automatics have different output shafts. So you have to take the cases apart and swap input shafts. I’ve heard it’s possible to swap from auto to manual, but not manual to auto. Not sure why.
The t-case from the automatic transmission FJ. You won’t need a driveshaft spacer because the tundra t-case doesn’t have a center differential, so it will be the same size. Look into a 1st gen tundra 4x4 V6 model (unusual), but if you can find one, everything might swap over. T-case, shifter, maybe even the electronics. (4x4 computer hidden behind the glovebox.
I used one from a 1998 Tacoma for my 1st gen Tundra but I also swapped out the automatic for the 5-spd manual from the same Tacoma. Pretty sure you could just use the transfer case if you wanted though because the automatic transmission for the 1st gen Tundra is the same as the 1st gen Tacoma
So with the 01-04 having manual operated low range, but still a 4x4 button with is electronically operated, would that have been better than the setup in the 06? Or whatever year the sequoia in the video was.
Awesome video on how to resolve a huge issue. Thinking on doing this to my '01 Sequoia. The 4x4 hasn't been working and i miss the simplicity of a manual t-case like my Jeeps and Suburban both had
Hey guys i know the video is older now and you dont the swap a while ago but.. i was wondering about the sequoia wheel speed sensor located next to the fill plug. Im sure you guys took that off (one x12mm) and removed a blank plug from the FJ TC to swap on the sequoia one in. My question is the sequoia speed sensor has a plastic gear that spins on the spline gear on the sequoia TC but my FJ cruiser TC has no spline (smooth shaft) so the plastic gear on the speed sensor has no way to attach or line up to spin to get a speed reading. Did you guys have a problem or is it only me with this random fj tc? Lol thanks any info be nice
I love the video. I am attempting to do the same thing. I was wondering what front differential you guys have in the front and if im not mistaken, i thought the v8 dont come with add front diff. If so, what is the drivetrain setup on that sequoia
I'm a little confused on why you did this swap - how was the actuator damaged? Did the water from the transfer case damage it (I thought there was a breather for the TF)?
We dont know exactly what failed. But we were stuck in low range and there was no way for us to come out of it, we resulted into braking the actuator to be able to go into 2wd and getting the car home. A new actuator costs more than the fj transfer case so it was a no brainer swap.
Do you happen to have the part number for the rubber shifter seat you bought from Toyota? Mine was absolutely rotted away and is a little floppy now. Ha
It would have worked, though you would still have to cut the hole for the shift lever, which went away in 2005. BUT the early 1st gen sequoia T-cases still used an electronic actuator (1, instead of 2) for the mode rod. (2wd, vs awd, vs 4x4). Also, the case would have been the same length, so no driveshaft spaced needed.
My transfer case just un alived itself broke a seal and have fluid leaking onto the exhaust there’s smoke coming from it like crazy hope you don’t mind I copy you guys

Is it possible to put a manual shifter in your original Tcase? It looks like they have a manual shifter port blocked off with a plate.
After your comment I went over and opened the little cover. There is no shift forks for a shifter to engage, so unfortunately it won’t be possible.

Is it not recommended driving on the road in 4wd after case swap?
How much was the overall price of the manual t case swap compared to the $700 new actuator, a.d.d. setup, and driveshaft spacer?
The transfer case was $500, ADD wiring was $150 and the spacer was like $50. The boot was $15.
