Scoob, I hope you're really that aware of how you actually do have thousands of kids and that we love and appreciate you as a father figure and a role model.
I think of you after every lap and rep, and hope you're proud. And every time I want to eat a cheeseburger I imagine you starting to scream out of frustration into your pillow.

Completely agree with you Scooby! Just like you've mentioned, you're more of a fatherly figure to me than my own father that left me when I was just 8 years old. Since then, he appeared every few months in my life for a day or two, but your advice is always here on the Internet. It also takes responsibility to take care of children. It's better to have no father than an irresponsible father which I had and kept appearing every now and then. I'm literally with you since I was 8 years old, now approaching my 25th birthday not too far away. Thank you for everything, Scooby!

It’s been awhile since your 3 tips on a healthier living (”drink more water…”) but whenever I hit a speed bump in life I think back to that video and then I ”David Goggins” the hell out of the slump. Today I happened to catch an episode of Scrubs where Dr. Cox friend dies and the meaning of the story suddenly was made obvious to me. The paradox I think is that we really don't have that much control of our destinies, although we benefit from behaving as though we do. I don't mean that we can't take effective action. What I mean is that things rarely turn out the way we expect. Did I say rarely? I mean never. But I totally agree that this is the right mentality to have.

Scooby, I just found your channel from Greg Doucette and I wanted to say that I feel very lucky for it. My sexuality is not my identity, but I am a young gay man and a lot of the time I have trouble identifying with people on UA-cam and especially in person. The past year I have been very interested in my own health and fitness and it is really starting to take off for me. Just this one video has helped me with a couple of issues I have had in the back of my head about life, and it is very refreshing and hopefully for me to be able to identify with another person, specifically an older and more experienced one. I have only watched a few videos of yours so far but I am very thankful for this obvious wealth of knowledge.

Thanks scooby. Been having a rough time lately, im aware plenty of it was preventable, somehow, that makes it hurt worse. Where many people (myself included) falter is figuring out where to get started with making changes, or if you do figure it out, the tasks seem too daunting. Thats where the illusion of having 0 control pops up.
The advice that i share (and i should be following in the first place) is that big changes occur by doing small things that seem insignificant on their own, but add up over time. There might be one big thing here and there that you need to do, but few things will be taken care of with a single "silver bullet". Manage your shit with tiny, seemingly pointless, but consistent good habits/judgement/actions. Add in patience and humility and that will lead you to better times.

    • @scooby1961
      @scooby1961  3 роки тому

Yes, knowing it was preventable makes it FAR worse. As far as little changes adding up, thats why I said that a successful life is a result of many good decisions. Its rarely one huge decision that makes the difference but the hundreds of tiny ones we make each day. Fries or baked potato. Watch TV to 'relax" at night or go for a jog.

Thank you Scooby. Going through a rough time here and taking action for it. (In my 30's, a break-up, depression and work stoppage) Taking responsibility and getting out of the 'victim zone' takes courage. All of this didn't happen because of faith, like you said. Blinding myself from the truth using relationship, games, movies or whatever to escape. My body or my mind were clearly telling me that something was amiss or not right. Not aligned. CHOOSE to ignore it for too long and there you go. Never too late though! That's the good news. It's not the job of your wife/husband/kids/friends to bring you happiness or fulfillment. That's your job. And yeah, you might have to do things differently. To let go of your old pattern or your ego. Catch your old thoughts and choose differently. And, most of all, to let go of the role of victim. Sounds easy, but you gain something from staying in that role. Could be inaction, attention, etc. People, you are way stronger than you think. Pain is part of life and it's time to stop avoiding it. It's inevitable. Catch all of the stories in your head and shut em up. You are worth it ;). Have a great day and take good care!

    Words of wisdom, as always.
This is why I always found it frustrating when people use the old "it's not my fault I'm fat, it's my glands" excuse. The knowledge that you have the power to better yourself should be a cause for motivation, yet most people prefer to remove any ownership from their problems and stay where they are. It's easier to shoot for average with no effort required than to take the reigns and actually improve yourself, especially when your friends and family enable that behavior.

Some tips I used to workout with kids:
    * when I take them to the playground, I run around it (or stretch or do dips) - I value my health more than what other people may or may not think
    * commuting back from work takes 1h, so I sometimes run commute instead (30 mns longer) - possibly taking the tube for some part, to shorten/increase the workout

It is not expected to have a full workout routine when having kids. One must be flexible and do what is possible. I have 3 kids and still manage to find time to be active in some way or another. This is just a feeling or a guess but I also think a lot of people just don't want things badly enough. I can only speak for myself but I have discovered that if I truly want something so badly, I'll do whatever it takes to get it. Lots of my hobbies are money intensive but when I want to do something badly enough, the money doesn't matter. It is just a number, nothing more. For example, I learned to skydive in college in 1984. It is an expensive hobby and nothing else mattered to me. I was going to do it and buy my own equipment which cost $1500, quite a bit of money for a college kid in the mid '80s. For me, the measure of money wasn't really the dollar but how many skydives anything I wanted to buy was going to cost me (opportunity cost!). Need new jeans? Oh, man, they cost 5 jumps-forget it. A pizza? 3 jumps. I used to Rollerblade a lot and a guy asked me what does a good pair cost and I said a decent pair (at the time, early 90s) was maybe $170. He balked at that number and so I said to him, "If you don't mind my asking, do you play golf?" He immediately said, "Never mind." I don't know if he ever decided whether inline skating was important enough or not. The sad thing is that so many people don't realize that their life, no matter how bad it seems, is so incredibly better than the majority of the nearly 8 billion people wandering this planet if they were to only take a moment and look at all the good. Many of these people have 'first world' problems. As you say, make better decisions. I could go on but I'll get off my soapbox now. Apologies for the long screed but be happy because I could have made it much longer! ; )

My kids are little tornados but I go by the concept making lemonade out of lemons. When my kids make a mess in the house I have them help clean. I also do house chores and I pretend to be a “cat” or walk on all fours. All these actions not only make my kids laugh or teach them lessons in cleanliness but I get at least 3 miles walked and I work out my shoulders, legs, & arms! Some days it’s arguably better than going to the gym. Some of these parents that complain need to make better choices.

America is a country of people who envy and blame other people or "things" for their shortcomings instead of blaming themselves for their bad decision making.
Yeah I get that some people are born with inherent disadvantages and will have a harder time succeeding but in the end it's up to them whether or not they want to get out of the funk that they're in.
I speak from experience. I grew up in a poor family, my single mother and 3 siblings, my mother worked her tail off and did her best to provide for us, but one person without a high school education raising 3 kids is a nearly an insurmountable task.. We lived in a trailer that should have been condemned, barely had electricity, no warm water and was a hazard to be in but that was the only roof we had.
I got my HS diploma and didn't have kids. I knew right out of HS I didn't want to live the same life I grew up in so I started working and stop spending my money, literally. My friends would make fun of me all the time and call me an "inside man" because I didn't wanna go out and spend my money because I didn't want to be poor my whole life. Saving up my money paid off, I was able to buy a new vehicle and get into a WAY better house that wasn't a condemned risk. I started at the bottom of a company worked my way up and developed competitive skills and ultimately left my poor roots, moved to another state and now I'm a middle class American instead of a poor American.
Statistically speaking because of my upbringing, I should have repeated the cycle and just stayed poor, but I made the decision when I was 19 years old I didn't want to be some poor kid my whole life. I watched how hard my mom worked to provide what she could, it wasn't much but she tried hard, and the world was just against her. I realize now that I'm in my 30s that her ethic is probably what rubbed off on me and saved me.

I'm right in the middle of these arguments, as with all my opinions. There are some things in life that you simply aren't in control of, regardless of your earlier decisions. All I can say is if you can apply lessons learned from earlier mistakes, and from other peoples mistakes, to help 'nudge' that brakeless bus back towards the more favorable course... that's really all most of us can do.

Ok. I lived in an ok-enough rural area neighborhood, for 13 years, and was at equilibrium with my "rural minded" neighbors. I had a really terrible individual buy an adjacent vacant property and began using a significant portion of my wooded land as his own including clearing and placement of his crap. After showing him the property line with my deeded survey on hand, asking him to stop and to get his trashy construction equipment off my property, I hired a good property attorney and did another high quality survey to re-prove and re-stake key areas of my property lines, including video recording of him speaking with the actual land surveyor about where the line was located, he removed his crap. He moved his shit off and I have him on video with his voice cracking and him flipping out from my evidence-gathering survey. I had a signed legal complaint with counts ready to have served to him for damages for the woods he cleared and usage of my land, but ultimately sold the home/property because it wasn't worth living in that area with my family anymore. The profit far exceeded the damages anyway, and that individual would have become dangerous towards us. The neighborhood and area was fine, and didn't have a general society decline that was apparent or anything, but I had a real asshole move in next to me, and I made the best decision possible to get away "from that". He's even damaging other people's adjacent property, whether they know it or not. I'm now in a holding position as we wait to move into a nicer, higher priced neighborhood (in air quotes, not bragging) of older homes which appears to have a very low to no probability of that happening again. The whole sequence of events has Stephen King level plot elements that no one can make up. I think we were one way or another nudged out of the house and area because we simply didn't belong there. So, how did my earlier decisions cause that happen to me?
