This is incredible Mike! My 3.5 year old son is OBSESSED with trains. He watches your videos all day and falls asleep to the long freight train ones at night. Your videos are a huge part of our life. I've taken him on the Coast Starlight (from Santa Barbara to Portland) twice now in a sleeper car and those were easily some of the best couple days in my entire life. Your video captures this magnificent journey so beautifully. I can't imagine how fun it must have been filming it in all the locations. I don't know/how this video does not have more views, but know that it is so appreciated. All of your videos, but especially this one, give my son and I so many incredible bonding hours. Thank you! And great job with this and all of your videos!
Of all the comments I've received over the years, this is one of the most heartwarming. Thank you so much and I am thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed this video!

I did this but in the other direction. Words of wisdom, don't expect to be anywhere near on time. Get a sleeper car, relax in the comforts the upgraded seat gets you. Partake in the wine tasting. Enjoy your meal. Spend a few hours just watching the world go outside. In effect enjoy the trip. It's won't be the fastest, but it will be worth your time. Before the event I was thinking I'd be bored at some point. This never happened. While a trip of this length would have driven me up the wall on a plane, being able walk around, large seats, a real bed, good food, made it go by much quicker than I expected. They had a movie theater as well but never got the chance.

So beautiful Railway track from los Angeles to Seattle so nice double decker train passing through different so nice town cover with beautiful scenery by Amtrak s starlight
Thank you! Loved your video and the gracious commentary. My father was an engine driver in Bombay but it was bringing freight from the docks to the shunting yards. Here my longest train rides have been from NY to Albuquerque and NY to Toronto. Have been on many,, many train rides in Japan, and other places. Trains make me see time differently. So, thanks anew!
The Coast Starlight is my most favorite long distance Amtrak train. I first rode it on Thursday, November 16,1978 from Los Angeles to Oakland. I was in the Navy then and was enroute from my home in Long Beach to Travis AFB to report for my flight to Clark AFB and the very best tour of duty I ever had when I was in the Navy. I was reporting for duty at the U.S.Naval Ship Repair Facility Subic Bay,Philippines. In 1985 my family & I rode the Coast Starlight to Seattle on Thursday,August 1,1985 and returned to Los Angeles on Friday, August 30,1985. I rode the Coast Starlight 3 Times. Since 1/31/1974 I have traveled 36 times on Amtrak trains.
My first train ride was from Oakland to Oceanside, CA. I had to return to the Marine Corps base to pack out my house after getting stationed at the Alameda NAS back in the early 90's. I did not feel like flying from Oakland to San Diego or Los Angeles, then figuring out how to get to Oceanside from the airport. But, the train stopped in Oceanside, and, I could catch a metro bus directly to the house I rented. I thought I'd be bored out of my mind, and for the first hour or so, was frustrated at how long it was taking to head south. But, once settled in, and seeing the beautiful views once we reached the coast, the trip turned out to be fantastic. Now, when I need to get to one of my maritime jobs from Seattle to Portland, I catch the Amtrak service, and three hours later, arrive in Portland rested and ready to go. And a side experience, the train station in Portland has the old, 1940's type feeling (when train travel was considered exotic) and not the antiseptic feel of a Greyhound bus station or some airports.
Thank you so much for the beautiful ride. The scenery is magnificent. I've been a train lover since I was a child. My parents and I would ride Union Pacific from Nebraska to Portland Oregon. It was such a thrill for me at that age, from about 4yrs old. We no longer have even Am Trak , if we want to catch it we have to drive about 50 miles. I'm much older, so dont get a chance to ride anymore, so these are wonderful. Thanks again
I’ve ventured this AMTRAK rail travel from Seattle, Washington’s Pacific West Coast to the East Chicago/Detroit being the ending destination 4 times. It was an adventure in itself as I had never traveled rail before. Home in the East ... husbands employment in the West at that time. ...... But I think I could enjoy cruising the Pacific Ocean through the mountainside again...to the Puget Sound. Of course gotta get to Los Angeles first.....LoL 😆 Thanks for sharing.
It must be thrilling as an engineer, whether a freight train engineer, or Amtrak engineer. Because those engineers have the opportunity to experience the breath taking scenery along the coast. Now THAT'S really enjoying your job, on this route! 😎 I would of loved to see a passing freight train, when the tracks became 2 tracks. Thank You Mike! 😊 Tony 58-year-old Air Force VET 🇺🇸
I remembered when I rode it in 2005 from LA to Salinas to visit my auntie. This video clearly recorded the scenes and reminds me the beautiful memory of the trip.
Love trains!! I’d like to see train travel replace much of the air travel in the U.S.. I hate flying anymore!! Actually, I love to fly. It’s the cattle car cabins and terminal experience that has ruined it.
I have watched this video twice now in the last three months and it’s really spurred me on to take this journey. Your video is wonderful, I can appreciate all the time and effort you’ve taken to get the shots and footage. Your narration was spot on too, you are certainly an accomplished videographer. Thanks for the ride. Next time you get itchy feet please take me with you.
What is not to like in this video? Great production values. Beautiful framing of the shots, judicious editing, and even good sound editing. Will be going on this trip in early March, and we are really looking forward to it. Thank you for this video preview.
Rode for Starlight for the first time last summer to Sacramento (heading to Yosemite; first time too). I loved it and scratched that off my bucket list! I live in Texas and rode Amtrak to CA. Thank you Jesus! 😇🙏 Seeing this video brings back good memories! Love the coast line views!
In March of 1981, I rode the Coast Starlight from Seattle to LA. Coach ($109.00) The scheduled departure time was 11:50am. The Seattle gift shop had been robbed that morning, so I almost didn't get to get and mail a postcard from the station. The best cheesecake I have ever had in my life was served on that trip. The stop at Klamath Falls after midnight for 30 minutes was surreal. The longer stopover was to add a private car or two.
I live near Tacoma so it was nice to see the train going through there. I grew up just outside Eugene so it was a trip down memory lane for me to see all those places near where I grew up.
These were so beautiful - I took an Amtrak from Cali to New Orleans and it was a wonderful and comfortable ride. Going through the desert was breathtaking and it was a fortunate full moon out. It would be nice if America or the states that had passenger rail lines would reopen or lay new tracks for this bygone era of travel to comeback - but with newer sleeker engines...
Why "sleeker" engines? Surely you don't think wind resistance on the engine measurably slows the train! All that streamlining stuff from the fifties was marketing ya know.
@@stevek8829 China has built 80K miles of new Fast Train route in the last 10 years... America doesn't even have 1 mile of 'Fast Train' anywhere... SO, so Sad....
A fast train isn’t always needed. Sometimes it’s better to sit back and enjoy the slower pace, so you can actually enjoy the view. People hurry too much as it is.
@@Seashellsbytheseashore21 Very true... I enjoy the nice easy pace of Amtraks trains. However, we need a fast train system to compete with auto and airplane traffic...

A truly great video with spectacular scenery. Would like to have seen the train crossing the mighty Columbia River just north of Portland. Congratulations on a job well done!!
My son and I did this trip up and back with a week spent in the Seattle area for his 50th birthday. We traveled in March even though his birthday is in the fall, he is celebrating all year :) I love trains and he loves baseball (as do I) so games and family up there as well. Beautiful trip, just missed the parts just north from Redding to Klamath because of night time. Thanks for the video with different perspective than from inside.
Thank you for uploading to. The quality is high enough to watch a travel program. It's a series of scenery that Japan doesn't have, and it's very interesting to see.
There's something so romantic about a train crossing the American landscape.. To me, it just seems more romantic and peaceful seeing a single long train cross the land than a freeway with a bunch of honking cars.
I took this train in the mid 1970's and it was one of the most pleasant journey's I have ever had anywhere in the world. The whole was designed for comfort rather than speed and the quirky nature of the train itself was delightful. In the small bar late in the evening people brought out instruments and a jam session started. When the bar closed the bar tender put the setup to bed then came out and joined in as well. Met some very nice people, saw some wonderful views. Would recommend this to anyone, definitely better than the hassle of air travel and more comfortable than the long distance coach (although that was interesting as well).
Mike, I'm a photographer (still) and found your framing, composition, narration, and editing of your video excellent! The colors were spectacular! Great job!!!
I have ridden the full length once in separate trips as I have ridden all the AMTRAK rail west of St. Louis from 5 weekend to weekend trips over the years. Once took the Zephyr to Emeryville and then the Coast Starlight to L.A. in 2001 as part of a trip out West. In 2002 took the Zephyr again to Emeryville and then the Coast Starlight north to Seattle as part of a trip. The Coast Starlight and the Zephyr are the best for AMTRAK rail out west. This video brings back good memories.
I had the honor and privilege to ride the Coast Starlighter, (coach), in 1983 from San Jose to Seattle on my way home to Alaska. Where I caught the Alaska marine highway ferry north to the Great land for the last leg north. It was a very beautiful trip. I can still see the Willamette valley, among other sights along the way right now in my mind remembering it Thanks..

Exactly two years ago (July 7th 2018) my family went on this train from Seattle to Los Angelos. We were on for four days, (two days at the start of the trip, two days on the return trip) and it was the most wonderful experience that I never knew I needed back then. Smooth movement on the train, constant sceneries, pleasurable food, and a seat to relax in with my 3DS and family. Truly a most fond memory.
Enjoyed this video very much. It has a very strong sense of place, which some of the train videos do not--attention to the route the train travels through, the landscape, rivers, mountains. A huge thumbs-up.
Dear CoasterFan2105, Thank you so much for this video. I took this train in 1988 when I moved from California to Minnesota, transferring to The Empire Builder in Portland, Oregon. This video brings back a lot of memories! M.G.

I live near Travis, hoping to take my first Amtrak trip soon. Probably will leave from Martinez.
Very enjoyable video and well done! Going through memory lane seeing all the towns I have lived in California.
What does it run about $$? For just the trip itself on that route? If I may ask.
This video was very labor intensive , Thank you for taking the time.👍
My son and nephew loves your train videos! Thank you and Keep up the good work!
It must be thrilling as an engineer, whether a freight train engineer, or Amtrak engineer. Because those engineers have the opportunity to experience the breath taking scenery along the coast. Now THAT'S really enjoying your job, on this route! 😎
I would of loved to see a passing freight train, when the tracks became 2 tracks.
Thank You Mike! 😊

After taking a train in Spain to travel all over, I agree. US needs to invest more in the rail infrastructure.
Thanks for having us along. Very informative and beautiful video work. Happy Rails.
I love trains and want to travel by train as much as I can. Wonderful video. Your narration is excellent, you have a great speaking voice.
Thank you very much, William! Glad you enjoyed the video.
What is not to like in this video? Great production values. Beautiful framing of the shots, judicious editing, and even good sound editing. Will be going on this trip in early March, and we are really looking forward to it. Thank you for this video preview.
As a college student taking this train from Davis, CA to Oxnard, CA this has the amazing views out there, especially of the Pacific Ocean
Amtrak, you're being stalked... and it's fabulous!!!
LOVE this train! I go to Oxnard often, 2 yrs ago, I went to Salem, OR, in 2 weeks I'm going LA to Seattle, can't wait!
This week, I'm taking an Amtrak train from Charleston to Richmond.
The beauty of this land. Simply Marvelous.
AGAIN ...I LOOOOOOVE YOU GUYS. AMTRAK FOREVER WOOHOO 💥💓😁👍🙌🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈💝💝💝💝💝.
Dear Mike, this is really a work of art. Thank you so much for your generosity and expertise! Best, Steve and Richard, Salt Lake City
That echo in Mt. Saint Helens sends shivers down my spine! Very nostalgic video that 8 y/o me would watch every day
Love the video! I was on the train trip to Vancouver, B.C and it's even more beautiful scenic view from Seattle all the way to Canada...
My hubby and i love train travel , its so romantic! We traveled from chicago to toronto canada and then from LA to British Colombia
By far the best train journey I’ve ever had.
I had never been to the USA never the less I appreciate the beautiful landscape and the efficient cleanliness.
Take a look at LA's tent towns, and you'll change your mind about US "cleanliness". This sanitized video is a Amtrak commercial to lure people.
@@alphonsozorro7952 I am not Utopia enthusiast, nor I dream of Eldorado for always there is dualism in the social life cleanliness vs filt and I think the USA is not an exception. Thank you of reminding me that there are homeless and filthy in every country.
Great video of the Coast Starlight. Been on this train a few times, I enjoy your narrative along the route. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Ron. Glad you liked the video.
Ron Karlsson how was your travel on the train?
Thank you for uploading to.
The quality is high enough to watch a travel program.
It's a series of scenery that Japan doesn't have, and it's very interesting to see.
Many thanks!
Thank you for taking us with you on this awesome journey. I enjoy it very much. Greetings from Germany.
Thank you, Patrick! Glad you enjoyed it.

There's something so romantic about a train crossing the American landscape.. To me, it just seems more romantic and peaceful seeing a single long train cross the land than a freeway with a bunch of honking cars.
Great I cant wait to ride this thing. I'm a Conductor for Union Pacific Railroad....
Thank you very much, John! Much appreciated.
Excellent video blog.
And yes I want to go !!!
Point of View Shots, Beautiful! A+ From A True RR Enthusiast!
Great job Mike, photography and information. Just booked a roomette in May... Seattle to LA. Thanks
Great adventure. On my bucket list for 2018
Amazing to see Portland without rain!😉
I had the honor and privilege to ride the Coast Starlighter, (coach), in 1983 from San Jose to Seattle on my way home to Alaska.
Where I caught the Alaska marine highway ferry north to the Great land for the last leg north.
It was a very beautiful trip. I can still see the Willamette valley, among other sights along the way right now in my mind remembering it
Thanks..

We took this trip a couple of years ago. It is fun to watch this video and remember.
We've traveled the Coast Starlight many times. We've only done the entire route once. Watching the entire video made me want to plan our next trip - right away. Wow. Nice job. Beautiful cinematography. Thank you for sharing.
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
It is fantastic the scenery is wonderful i
We have been wanting to do this trip for years. After seeing this video, we are definitely moving it to the top of my USA trips to do.
That was enjoyable. Thank You!
I remember visiting Mount Shasta as a child. So cool.
loved your video! I just returned from this trip and it was a trip of a lifetime. I'm ready to go Again!
Can you offer any tips?....best car to travel in, hows the food...etc...?
What about photography opportunities.
Enjoyed watching the video very scenic, loves the small towns and country side.....the forest so beautiful.....
Enjoyed this video very much. It has a very strong sense of place, which some of the train videos do not--attention to the route the train travels through, the landscape, rivers, mountains. A huge thumbs-up.
Thank you, that is exactly what I was going for. Much appreciated.
Thank you for this video, so peaceful. 🚆
When my family an I moved to Vancouver Wa from Pomona Ca we took the Coast Starlight 1st class to Portland Or.
Dear CoasterFan2105,
Thank you so much for this video.
I took this train in 1988 when I moved from California to Minnesota, transferring to The Empire Builder in Portland, Oregon.
This video brings back a lot of memories!

Watched this video for the second time , I had this on my wish list , another one I will never get to cross off due to family commitments . Am I jealous of you Americans , YES you bet .
Amtrak 135's Nathan K5LA horn is so loud and beautiful!!!
Thanks for this beautiful trip. I would have liked more shots from inside the coaches to show what they look like. The views from the trip were just great.
I love Amtrak, the only way I travel.. I've been all over the Country on Amtrak 🚂🚃❤I've taken this route, beautiful scenery 😍 Wonderful video Mike, tfs..
This is a great video, and when I visited my sister years ago in California it was just so beautiful and wonderfu🌼,l and this would be a lovely thing to do the next time around when I visit her.
I left from New Jersey which was almost zero degrees, and it was near 80 degrees in California... and it really left me scratching my head, LOL!
Very nice touch to go back in time.
