True story...NXIVM tried to recruit my brother and cousin into the Executive Success Program. My uncle owned a successful software company, and he received a phone call in 2010 from someone who pitched the ESP to him. He didn't think it sounded good for him, but thought it sounded like a good opportunity for his son (my cousin). The ESP workshop was is NYC, and because my cousin was only 17 at the time, my uncle also purchased a ticket for my 19-year-old brother to attend ESP with him. After the second day of the workshop, my brother called me and said, "I think this is a cult. We're not coming back. Please explain to Uncle Michael if he asks why we quit." I gave him a little bit of s*** for quitting something our uncle paid for them to attend--I didn't quite know what it was about, and it just sounded like my brother and cousin wanted to quit and have fun in NYC for the rest of the week. But, I said, "If it really feels that weird, then get the hell out, I guess." He said that the second day they were breaking everyone down emotionally (sounds like that part where they force the new recruits to dig into their most painful memories in front of everyone). He said my cousin was starting to be affected and was buying into things, and so he just grabbed his arm and walked them out during the first break in activities that day. I want to believe that they were able to see what was going on because my brother is smart, and that's definitely a contributing factor as to how they got out before even joining, but the truth is that they could have easily been convinced during that ESP workshop and ended up joining. So, that's the story of how my brother and cousin almost joined NXIVM. Our entire family is eternally grateful that they saw the bulls*** right away. Bullet dodged.
Fun fact I’m from the town that NXIVM was based in and my grandparents went to temple with and were good friends with Nancy Salzman. When all this came out I was shocked and appalled that this was occurring in my hometown. Tried to watch the documentary the Vow with my mom but she couldn’t stand to watch it and see Nancy in it after knowing what she had done.
I recommend Sarah Edmondson's book "Scarred". She was one of the whistleblowers. It was her interview in the New York Times that really started the downfall of Keith.

I am finally going back to an actual university for my bachelor’s degree. My AA Was for anthropology and law 😆 the experience I had was back in 2003 and one book was $300!
