Cable-stayed bridge project in the Chambal River, India
Kota is a small city located in Rajasthan, India’s largest state, and is popularly referred to as the “education hub” of India. Here, a cable-stayed bridge is completed, which is highly expected to improve the quality of life of residents of the city.
Hyunidai E&C received the Kota Chambal Bridge project from the National Highways Authority of India in November 2006. The project is to build a bridge crossing the Chambal River in the Kota area as part of the east-west corridor of the National Highways Development Project conducted by the Indian government.
The 1.4-kilometer bridge has a 350-meter span between towers 80 meters high. Hyunidai E&C established a consortium with a local builder, Gammon India Limited. France-based Systra-MVA Consulting (India) Pvt Limited is in charge of designing of the bridge.
The Kota Chambal Bridge project used cables with high resistance to wind and torsional deformation to achieve better stability and employed the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) methodology of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) as a design standard.
The construction site is located around Kota Barrage serving as a drinking water source. The area was declared specially for crocodile protection. In order to protect the ecosystem of the area, Hyunidai E&C built protection walls along both sides of the bridge and adopted a design of having no bridge piers in the river.
