October 14, 1976-WABC Eyewitness News After Yankees Win AL Pennant

- WABC Eyewitness News covers the Yankees winning their first AL pennant since 1964! Long-time WABC anchor Bill Beutel co-anchors with Tom Ellis (who I believe was later a Boston anchor. Roger Grimsby was the 6 PM co-anchor). Sal Marchiano does the sports recap of the game which ended with Chris Chambliss's dramatic walk-off home run, while John Johnson is in the crowd outside the Stadium for the celebration.
Gosh i love Ellis' introduction to the newscast, "Good evening everybody, I'm Tom Ellis and you know what the story is tonight. And John Johnson is at that story...". Hands down a brilliant opening to a post-game newscast
Epic. Can't help but notice the real immediacy and personal nature of the local news coverage in those days. Sal looks like he's so happy he's losing his mind.
This is epic, like you said.
lol
I was a year old when the Yankees won this game. I absolutely enjoy watching these old clips.
John Johnson. That is the way to perform live on the air. Forget the information, just go with the energy of the crowd, the boss won't punish you for making good television.
J.J. was the MAN!!!
what a night I would have loved to have been there truly an iconic moment yanks for life ⚾⚾⚾
I always wondered who caught the HR ball. Hope the guy made it out of there alive and still has the ball, what a story to tell!
If he does still have it after all these years, he might need this news broadcast to be able to prove that his ball is the genuine one! :)
lemmiwinks09 Yeah, especially considering that he was in the South Bronx. I’m not sure I would have said that if I had caught the ball lol
I believe an officer who was in between the fence & the bleachers retrieved it and gave it to Chambliss. I know Chambliss put his jersey & bat up for auction a few years back, but if I'm not mistaken he still has the baseball.
What a magical sports moment especially if you're a New Yorker
Or simply a Yankee fan anywhere in the States!!
I was a kid living in pomona ca...i remember being excited seeing that hr and the fans running on the field..and i was a dodgers fan back then
Chambliss homered at precisely 11.43 pm. By the time ABC got through with all the post game coverage, it had to be close to or past midnight. Every other TV station had already had their late news, during which this game was still going on. This game was also on WPIX Channel 11 in New York. I prefer Phil Rizzuto's call, but Keith Jackson's was fine too. The problem was Cosell interrupted him.
WPIX had their own newscast right after the game coverage signed off there. It's a pity the full telecast of the WPIX game doesn't exist because as the clip we have seen elsewhere on YT shows, they had better camera shots than ABC of the moment (they not only had a CF shot when Chambliss hit it they also got a terrific isolation shot of him throwing up his arms in triumph as he saw it was out that ABC managed to miss completely).
I've watched that clip over and over and over, and I also prefer it. WPIX has better shots (love the center field as opposed to behind the plate on ABC). WPIX not only had great broadcasters, there coverage of the game was in every way as good if not better than ABC or NBC.
I recently came into possession of full TV audio of WPIX from the 7th inning to signoff. A future project may involve synching that audio to the ABC video up to the point where we have the extant WPIX video.
That would be great! Thanks.
That would be epic
Best team ever when baseball good now it sucks this when w.p.I.x was king no cable bill white phill rizzto and Andy messiersmith announce the games r.I.p
You mean Frank Messer....Andy Messersmith was an active player in 1976
The 12 years since the '64 Series
seemed an eternity.
That Circle 7 logo hasnt changed! Ellis worked in Boston for a long time after NYC.
Munson coming in at 10:12 is fantastic!
3 days before i was born i am proud to be a bicentennial baby
I was born that day and didn't know it was the exact day that, that had happened until may '19. I shouldve but didn't. Glad I do now.
I was born on the day they clinched 9/25/76... From cincinnati and ended up worshipping billy martin as a child( still do)... What kind of kid idolizes an alcoholic volatile baseball manager? I remain a closet yankees fan to this day...im okay with that cause billy played for reds in 1960...billy should be in hall of fame
Kiss that baby goodbye - Sal 👍
Oct 14, 1976.. Awesome night but knew what Cincinnati was bringin'..
It is my favorite sports moment of all time! But the Yankees getting swept in the World Series by the Reds is what brought Reggie to the Bronx Zoo!!! And to think that Billy Martin wanted Joe Rudi!
Now this is the way to involve the crowd and catch the excitement!!! Not like the stuck up reporters we have now.

There is other news.....in 1976 NYC I’m sure it was more mugging, crime, arson fires, etc.
The son of Sam serial killer would strike for the second time just days after this . New York was thrown into fear until August 10th 1977 when son of Sam was caught
no way that was the guy who caught Chambliss' home run ball. No way.
That's exactly what i thought. He bought that at Dick's Sporting Goods.

Would you happen to have any Eyewitness News report clips of the Yankees winning the 1977 World Series?
Sorry I don't. The only 77 WS newscast I have is audio of WPIX after the Game 6 broadcast and in 78 I have the beginning of WNBC after they won Game 6 (both on my YT Channel).
@@epaddon Drat! Well, thanks anyway.
I’m still (~amazed) (for lack of better word at the moment) that practically LESS than ONE SECOND after the ball goes over the fence, the home run fence doors open, and about 20+ security (or police) storm out.
-
& technically the game wasn’t even over yet, until Chambliss finishes running the bases.
-
Was this discussed before hand?
“Hey, if there’s a Walk-off home run, them we (security) barged onto the field instantaneously”
-
Were All 20+ of them already “pressed” against the door?, at the start of the inning? (in anticipation in case this happens?)
-
It would take at least a few seconds for that many people to even reach the actual door (from the large amount of space/gap behind the wall)
-
You barely could get 20+ people to come out a of burning building that fast.
the character of NYC at that time is so revealed i this.
stevedrums ...Yankee Hater ...The point is, that the Yankees we're back ...I believe they won it all in 1977 & 1978 ...This (1976) was the season that George Steinbrenner and Billy Martin brought them back from 12 years of mediocre baseball, the beginnings of the modern era Yankee Dynasty.
Billy martin...should be in hall of fame. Period.
The Yankees had to play the Reds in the WS less than 2 days later , after all that celebration they weren't ready less than a week later it was all over
My brother was at the game...
The Reds were just too good
Judging from the 9:45 mark, the field didn't take that much of a beating.
not nearly as bad what happened in 1969 with the Mets. there were holes all over the place then.
@@dzanier Or the Mets winning the NL East in 1986.
@@extremeredtv5728 no this was worse. In 1986 they were able to play the next day. It wasn’t easy but they did it.
@@dzanier 1969 was bad. The 86 clincher was really bad but you're right. They played the next day and you can see the new sod during that game which was in the afternoon.
@@extremeredtv5728 as far as the amount of fans swarming the field, I think this one is at the top. But as far as destruction of the field, 69 and 86 were worse.
I was born September 1976

RIP Oscar gamble
The guy that Chambliss knocked silly, his fish flapping body took out two other guys.
Too bad Roger Grimsby wasn't on duty that night. His reaction would have been interesting, considering he was such a curmudgeon.
There's a famous story about how after a feature regarding garbage collecting in NYC was over Roger then set-up the next segment which was Rona Barrett with, "Speaking of garbage....."
HAHA
That's funny. I'would love to see that clip.
That's what he WAS I was 8 years old my Mom let me stay up to watch the whole game STILL REMEMBER WHAT WAS SAID AND EVERYTHING I MISSED SCHOOL THAT TUESDAY AFTERNOON TO SE GAME # 3 LIVE AT THE BRAND NEW BALLYARD IN THE SOUTH BRONX YANKEES WON I THINK THE SCORE WAS 5-3!
Don't remember Ellis, guess he didn't last too long.
I was there down near the field, it was a booze/pot fueled dangerous riot.
You were lucky to be there. I think this is the greatest Yankee victory of the last 50 years.
You mean as a single game?
Yes. This is the most dramatic moment of the last 50 years of Yankees baseball. Boone's homer isn't even close. The 12-year drought and the way it ended, on one swing of a tense back and forth game, make this moment number 1 on my list. The fan reaction represents the euphoria of having a dark period finally come to an end.
Ellis and once-and-future Detroit anchor Bill Bonds were both hired by WABC in 1975 while Beutel was off co-hosting "AM America." (Ellis originally co-anchored with Grimsby at 6 whilst Bonds was on with Roger at 11.) By this time Bonds was back in Detroit at WXYZ-TV, so by then Beutel had joined Ellis at the 11 P.M. anchor desk. Ellis lasted only a bit longer at WABC before returning to Boston.
And after Ellis, WABC then brought in Larry Kane from Philadelphia who proved a total misfire.
Whats the name of the song at 12:09
But they got swept by the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series that year.
Let's hope Yankees win the World Series in 2019
The Washington Nationals / Montreal Expos would like a word with you
The New York Yankees didn't win the world series in 1976 the following year they won the 1977 world series then again in 1978 when they beat the Los Angeles Dodgers twice in the world series but in 1976 the Cincinnati reds beat our Yankees however the Yankees won the pennant race it was a 12 year old drought since the New York Yankees last won in 1962
