I lived in the US for 10 yrs and you listed many of the reasons I moved back here. Regarding drying your hair in the bathroom the voltage is twice that of the US so there is a very good reason for not having electric outlets in the UK!

  • @iainmcculloch5807

The reason we don't have electrical outlets in bathrooms basically comes down to the fact that our mains electrical supply is nominal 240V. In the US it's nominal 120V.

So many mid-20th century films had people being accidentally (or deliberately) killed by the radio, lamp or proverbial toaster falling into the bath it almost became a cliche. The fact that it didn't just happen in films, and happened far too regularly, prompted serious health and safety reforms regarding electricity and water in building standards. Plug sockets were banned in bathrooms, and in kitchens they had to be no closer than a metre away from the sink or other taps. Bathroom lights must be specifically designed for use in a bathroom, and the switch must be on the ceiling and operated by a hanging cord, or completely outside the bathroom.

What you'll find is that there is always a very good reason why you can't do these things in the UK. It has been thought through or tried before and decided it's not a good idea. They are not just arbitrarily stopped.
Several of these things you seem upset about because they inconvenience you a little, but as many selfish Americans seem to do, you never look at the issue from another persons perspective. Right on red is incredibly dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists, guns - enough said, banned dogs are banned for good reason, Sunday trading hours are to help people have a home life, school uniforms instill pride and discipline and stop some bullying etc etc.

here it would be left on red. if it existed. our roads are too narrow for that, and our traffic lights are at narrow roads, with two way traffic each having one of the two lanes. there could be accidents with a turning on red vehicle sideswiping or run into the back of. sunday trading hours are nothing to do with people having a home life. its to help smaller corner shops compete against the big supermarket chains. school uniforms are to do with eliminating class distinctions and wealth as a trigger for bullying. theoretically it avoids the situation in the states of cliques of rich kids bullying and putting down poorer kids who they can identify by not having the latest brand name clothes, nothing to do with pride. only the public schools (fee paying for the rich and nobility) had school uniforms, and that was to do with equality as much for the teachers who might not be from those backgrounds than the theoretical 'everyone is equal'.

    Re bathroom/electrics.
the one basic exception to no power in bathrooms is Shavers, there are shaver points in most bathrooms. These are very lower powered and double insulated.
The reasons are safety, 120 volts is less likely to kill than 240 volts.
Our regulations tend to assume that if something can go wrong it is best to prevent it.

    • @knocker9439
      @knocker9439 3 місяці тому +4

This is not true. You can have 240 standard power in a bathroom. It just has to be a certain distance from anything containing water i.e. a bath or a shower. Most UK bathrooms are too small for this to happen that's why people think you can't have it..

I’ve worked in retail, in a very large supermarket and your comments about “returning things” or “complaining about things” if something was incorrect or not as expected etc because it is typical that the “complainer” will be recompensed with lots of free goodies, left a very bad taste in my mouth.
I have seen YT videos of people (usually in the USA) sitting in their cars, in a car park outside the building where they have just “complained”, gleefully smirking and giggling as they tell the tale of their latest trick or scam.
One group claimed to the people in the takeaway restaurant/diner that a food item, they had just actually eaten! wasn’t prepared properly or “tasted funny” or the pizza wasn’t cut equally - and they were rewarded with a complete set of meal vouchers - they knowingly and deliberately set about making things up, just to see what they could get from telling lies!!
You seemed to condone and completely understand the topic of “complaining” as the customer is “always right” and call it “an acceptable consumer culture” to get free things!! Why?? All it does, is increase the price of food or items to compensate for the loss of giving things for free and the non complaining consumers, Joe and Joan Soap, are the ones who are suffering because of the GREED of those others who cheat and lie! How can it be acceptable! Why don’t the retailers fight back??

    * Roundabouts work better than junctions (intersections). Even the US TV series Myth Busters proved that.
    * Given that the modern postal system as used all over the world, including the USA, was invented here in 1840 we have got used to taking our large parcels to the Post Office and posting smaller items in Letter Boxes, often known as "Pillar Boxes" due to the shape of many of them. If you catch a Postman or Postwoman on their round you can hand them a letter or small parcel to them (well, mine takes them 🙂) and there is now an online scheme for parcels where you pay on the website and the Postie comes to your house with a pre-paid label and collects them. BTW, what you call a "Mail Slot" is usually referred to as a "Letter Box" here even though there is rarely any sort of box attached to it.
    * Our Gun Laws are very strict and with good reason. We had incidents such as the Hungerford Massacre and the Dunblane Massacre which resulted in crackdowns on firearms ownership and useage. The last time that I looked, an individual is 129 times more likely to be killed in the USA by firearms than they are here. UK Police are not routinely armed because they don't need to be. OUR Firearms Laws are designed for the Twenty First Century, not the Eighteenth Century (Second Amendment, 1791) and we like them that way. 😉
*. The UK uses a 230 volt system as against the USA which uses a 110 volt one. Drop a hairdryer into a filled sink or bath here and the outcome will not be healthy for you.
    * Pitbulls were responsible for many deaths here a few years ago including two tiny babies close to where I live in Leicestershire, hence the ban on them and other dangerous dogs. You can argue that it is down to training or the lack of it but who is to decide which are OK and which are not? Safest for all concerned to just ban the lot. So we did.
    * Since the amending of our Trading Hours Laws in the late 1980s we now have 7 day trading with limited Sunday Trading. We cope very nicely, I mean who needs to go shopping at 3:00 AM?!
    * School uniforms are there to prevent better off kids turning up in really expensive clothes and poorer kids feeling inadequate. They also give them a feeling of identity with and belonging to their schools.
    * We do complain about poor and bad service, etc but we usually implement a different type of action: We tell all our friends and don't go there again.🤣

Individual towns used to have one day a week "Early Closing Day" where all the shops would close for the afternoon, I think it was Thursday in Stroud, the idea being that it compensated the shop workers for having to work on Saturdays. It all sort of forced a slower pace of life on everybody. Good or bad? Bit of both I guess.

'Right on a red' is indeed a good idea (although it would be left on a red).
There used to be Post Boxes all over the place, but since I have sent 2 letters by post in the 10 years (at least) I'm quite happy to go to a post office to send mail
All you need to get a gun licence in the UK is a) a Doctor's letter saying (in effect) you're not a nutter b) some sort of safe place to keep the gun(s) out of other people's hands c) a good reason to own a gun (and self-defence is not a good reason). I think you probably need a clean criminal record as well, but I'm not sure. If you have an unlicenced gun and are caught with it, you start with 5 years in prison; if you were doing something illegal when caught, add 5 years to whatever sentence you might have got.
Outlets in bathrooms: a little over the top. Definitely safer without them, but I think the difference is miniscule. Probably saves a few lives a year, but those it saves find other ways to win Darwin Awards anyway.
Dangerous dogs: they exist. But usually they are dangerous because they have bloody stupid and incompetent owners.
24/7 shop opening. I've been on call for IT problems 24/7 for a minimum of 1 week in 4 for the last 40 years For the last 25 or so, I been the 'unofficial' backup for the person who was actually on call. I wasn't actually called out that often, but I hated it. And if I wasn't called out I didn't have to stay at work. I also spent 6 or 7 years in a job where 5 of us covered - in the office - 24/7. (We were covering for Gas Suppliers so that they didn't have to set up 24/7 teams: large retail gas suppliers to the UK market back in the 90's.) Not fun at all.

I think a lot of the cultural differences between the UK and the US can be summed up by the US generally supporting personal risk in exchange for more personal freedoms, whereas Britain is generally safer for fewer. There's also (traditionally at least) more of a communal sense to the culture in the UK, where as the US is very individualistic. The US being far more capitalistic (it could be argued to the extreme) also factors in heavily. Then of course there's the well-deserved stereotypes of Americans being more optimistic and enthusiastic, whereas Brits are more pessimistic and subdued. Brits are more 'traditional,' Americans more 'progressive' (keeping in mind that traditional is not guaranteed to be bad and progressive not guaranteed to be good).
For two nations with so much in common, we're really nothing alike.
Personally, I'm an American who is far better suited to British culture so if anyone is looking to trade places... 😐👍

As I understand it the law usually *allows* businesses to open 24/7 (certainly by application as long as there are no objections by residents who, legitimately, feel the business may become a centre for trouble) but it's very rare there is enough 24/7 business to make it worth paying staff to run it, and potentially more staff to keep the place safe in the early hours.
You certainly will see the larger outlts of some supermarkets open 24/7 many days in the run up to Christmas for example as people *will* do late night shopping to avoid the daytime hoards.
The Sunday opening hours is a hang over from when, by law, all shops had to shut on Sunday for religious reasons until 1994... though there were exceptions that gave different culture's shops permission to open and smaller shops are still less restricted than the maximum 6 hours between 10am and 6pm for supermarkets... so they can do 10-4, 11-5 or 12-6 supposedly.

The bathroom & electricity rules have been set after many years of experience of accidents and foul pay. I have a shaver socket in my bathroom and it’e designed for electric shavers and electric toothbrushes. It has access to 250v another for 110v. the fitting has an isolating transformer built in. I can’t quote a case but apparently deaths have occurred by a disturbed spouse dropping a hair-dryer or heater into a bath so claims could be made on life insurance. And, of course standard light switches are also banned, we use ceiling mounted pull switches.
Sunday closing. Yes our labour laws are more regulated than the US, however we have special Sabbath opening laws. My local Tesco is open from 06:00 am from Monday to Saturday 24:00, Sunday is open from 10:00 am to 16:00 pm. However the store sells alcohol during these times. Your first few youTube vids were pleasant and interesting, but now you're becoming, frankly, quite bizarre.
I've lived and worked in more than a dozen countries on different continents and am familiar with the changes in emotions and opinions after different periods of time in new-to-you countries, so I'm thinking that your initial excitement and novelty of 'life overseas' has worn off, and you're starting to feel disgruntled, instead of entertained, at all the differences you're now finding, and homesickness, loneliness or similar emotions are kicking in.
It's never a good idea to 'go public' at this stage. Private communications to family and friends 'back home' are one thing, but _publicly_ expressing your general unhappiness with normally-accepted practices in your new country of residence - whether you're in Melbourne, Muscat, Manchester or Madrid - is very much NOT calculated to win you any friends or sympathy, from anyone, be they natives or long-time residents of your own nationality.
This doesn't mean that you should be all sweetness and light - far from it! Instead of giving your viewpoint of 'thid is weird!' from a position of blatant ignorance, though, you might want to merely point out the things you find unexpected, curious or inconvenient, and - _without_ instant condemnation - ASK about them.
I truly believe that the biggest problems faced by anglophones moving to another anglophone country are lack of adequate preparation and unrealistic expectations. _Just because_ our languages are mutually intelligible _does not_ mean that _any_ thing else will be the same! Yet the assumption is often, that even if it's not the same, it'll be sufficiently similar to make it 'easy'. NOT TRUE!
Thank goodness it wasn't possible to go humiliatingly public with my early, and very changeable, impressions about my new locations and colleagues, with all their quirks and foibles, in the 30-ish years I worked overseas. It was bad enough discussing the early impressions I shared in letters home to family and friends, when I then had to tell them I'd signed another, longer, contract because I loved the place so much!

You can have an outlet in the bathroom in the UK but it is limited to 110v (our normal voltage is 220v). Many electronics will function with 110v as the first thing they do is pass the current through a step down transformer anyway. Very basic (loop circuit) electrical devices (as opposed to electronic) like hair dryers that simply pass the current through without using a circuit board or chip may not operate at a lower voltage than they are designed for.

    Hi Mandy
The tightening of rules against bully breeds is due to a number of high profile deaths in the UK (in the 80's and 90's)from badly trained pitbulls. I agree it's about the training rather than the dog breed.
Btw girl scouts was started in the UK a few years before being started in the US but the cookie thing isn't a thing as you say in the UK. The closest thing in the UK is when the scouts have a local fair that includes donated home baked goods.
There are a number of 24/7 large supermarkets still open. Many of the large supermarkets trialled 24/7 in most towns but reduced hours due to no customers in the middle of the night. There's also a number of 24/7 eating places in London. The 12-5pm on Sundays is mandated by law. Stores over a certain size can only open for a maximum of 6 hours on a Sunday. Smaller stores are except. In the 90's they couldn't open at all on a Sunday as that was meant for rest and church.

The US and guns. Well for this we have to thank England. The American Revolution began with the British Army trying to disarm the colonist. The colonist took exception to this and soon "the shot heard around the world" was made and war with England began. Our founding fathers understood no government is perfect and there may come a time when the citizens would need to have another revolution they gave us the 2nd Amendment (the right to own and carry guns).
