There's a valid reason people hate car dealers: they're greedy and can't be trusted. Let us buy directly from the manufacturer and be done with the whole charade of car dealerships.
I trust the government
@@lightinthedarkness8541So he would?
@@redhunnid5142 Would he so?
Dealerships are required as when recalls are needed these are the place owners can go. All sold cars go back to the manufacturer is unrealistic.
However, whether to sell the car through dealership or not should not be in the rule book. Let the manufacturer decide.
@@maozedowner5915 You are 100% correct. Dealers are absolutely necessary for warranty issues also. Buy a car direct from Ford and then need warranty work and then take it to a dealer and see where you wind up in line for service.
Consumers definitely need this oversight. Auto dealerships are a grotesque scourge and filled with crooks. All the hard earned money lost to lying, dirty, disgusting dealerships is an absolute crime! This isn’t government overreach. It simply puts these crooks on notice.
I was unaware Kia was offering a $500 rebate to finance with them until I saw the dealer add the $500 to the agreed price then take it off. Dealerships need to become service centers only, buy directly from the manufacturer.
How is this not illegal already? How come it took this long to do it.
It will do nothing. Not one thing.
The first three sentences of your comment also apply to the federal government.
They are crooks usual alot of the employees are ex cons
Nothing worse than having to go through a dealership to buy a car.
Yes, it's a miserable experience. I'm ready to buy a new car but I keep putting it off because it's so stressful, plus they drag it out for half a day to waste your time.
We were helping my parents buy a car and both us and the dealers knew what the actual price was. The transaction could've been done in under an hour. However, they dragged the process out for hours making us waste our entire day at the stealership. In the end, we got the car for exactly what it was supposed to cost anyways. The process is so inefficient and it wastes everyone's time. That's why direct-to-consumer wins. My big T purchasing experience was flawless and painless. It was like checking out a cart from the big A.
How did you know the actual price?
Years ago i made the mistake of going to a dealer in Ft Lauderdale area to buy a truck. Horrible experience. At the end of a two hour sweat show there were pre paid oil changes and a 12% interest rate hidden on the paperwork. When i asked the closer guy what the rate was the guy said he didn’t know, but i found it in the paperwork…he said it was the best in he could get me. Meanwhile i already had loan approval from the same bank for 7%. So the finance guy was adding 5 points and oil changes plus some other BS. The monthly payment was going to be $945. I walked out having wasted two hours of my life.
I ended up going to fleet dealer in Palm Beach and got a similar truck for 550 a month with my own loan from a credit union at 6%. Not all dealers are jerks but some are criminal in their deception and sales tactics. The worst dealers are typically in poorer areas.
About a 2 weeks ago i tried buying a 2012 honda civic and they tried to charge me $1000 processing fee and $3500 if the engine or transmission ever goes bad within the next 3 years. Im not very educated in this area but $1000 processing fee is crazy.
Dealerships are rip off artist ripping you off at every single corner never bring your vehicle back to the dealer for anything, unless it’s a free repair under warranty
It is well past time to get rid of state franchise laws which prevent auto makers from selling directly to buyers. These laws are completely unnecessary and anti-competitive. Let the free market drive dishonest car dealerships out of business.
yea, it would make it more competitive because manufacturers will sell it for the msrp so dealers would need to sell at mrsp or better.
Yeah you explain to me how the sticker price says 21k and the total price is 33k...... That was in Orlando Florida yeah.. was told couldn't buy the car without the add ons...
then tell them you are not buying the car, turn around and walk out. If enough people do that then they will stop. Problem is, people tend to get into "I must have this car" mode when car buying. Salespeople are well trained in fostering that "buying panic" in customers. Remain detached. Buying a car should be no more emotionally connected than buying a loaf of bread or a television set at Costco. It is a business transaction. Either you come to terms you, as the buyer, agree on or there is no deal. I have walked from numerous car dealerships. No need to be nasty, just thank them for their time and leave.
Yeah I did the same... I walked off... They even try to offer me a ride home in one of their sporty cars lol

I got my first new car seven years ago. Guess what they sold me an extended warranty that expired before the car warranty from manufacture! Also free oil changes included. Found out I paid close to 500 for that in hidden fee. Then I got a letter from them saying they are under new owners and my oil changes are not longer free! Took my money. I will never go back to them! I want my money back for both things they sold me!
Lol NADA is right... we should just buy cars straight from the manufacturers instead of going through dealerships...
Come to NEW JERSEY, almost all of the small dealerships add on these bogus fees. The price they advertise is not the price you will pay. BIG SCAM.
It's pretty simple. If you absolutely, positively HAVE to buy THAT car, THAT day, at THAT stealership, then negotiate the price before you get to the back office. "How much to drive it off the lot?" Until that question is answered, no sale. If they try to add anything in the back office, walk, because you don't actually have to buy that car, that day, at that stealership.
Oil changes on EVs? Don't forget to add blinker fluid maintenance as well!
How about instead of new rules we just put the crooks out of business
thank you!!
“I asked questions but I was lied to.”
Oh so you DIDN’T decline the warranty after all lol
The government should also check on false advertisments on false prices
Let’s be real……there are $60,000 Honda civics on the road. The dealer mark up period is Ludacris. Consumers should be able to order from manufacturers just like a Tesla.
get rid of the mark up too.
I was shopping for a 2024 toyota tacoma and saw the MSRP was 31,500. At checkout a $1,500 fee was added for handling. So basically the MSRP was a lie because no matter where I would be in the world, the actual cost would be $33,000.
Manufacturers delivery is rarely added at part of the MSRP! It’s always an additional charge!
Corruption everywhere
The owner of the dealership should be fined personally.
I worked for a shop that the dealer owned .......A ready fee of $300 = Remove white rap off the hood and door A old rag to the dash And a 4 min wash.....Most new cars ( Black shows alot ) have paint scratches Poor paint ....Oh And Paint protection? Thats a cheap silicon wax rubbed on and off your car...$8 cheap wax.........undercoating? Why You will never look under it in 1 year to see if it works..
KUDOS !
THANK YOU
People are stupid. The government can't protect them.
When I was selling cars, I put it right on the sticker's addendum... "Dealer Mark Up".
And they paid it.

NADAs response was insulting. They know exactly what’s happening and literally have to find the worst excuse to explain it. “Lengthening the buying process”? Come on you clowns...
Big dealerships have all that money offshore in accounts…. Sorry but this is Bigger then this.
Oh, but direct car sales to customers is a bad thing. Dealerships argue that they need this system to protect, and take care of the customers.
Yes, bend customers over, when they buy cars. And afterwards for high maintenance fees.
What about delivery fees?
This is a huge problem too, consumers shouldn’t be responsible for a 1200 delivery fee
Good! now crack down on real estate on real estate agents. the % commision pay they get is unreal. With internet widely available, you find your own house now. Most even have 3d virtual tour of the house yourself so you can decide if you even like it or not before you even go to the house. A lot of leg works are gone. House prices soared. 1 out of 10 houses are over a million now. They should get paid a flat fee for their services. Not pay them 10's and thousands of dollars. I'm not saying pay them nothing. But the amount of work they do doesn't equal to the amount of work they provide for you.

Dealerships are on their way out. Let me buy a truck for msrp off an app from the manufacturer please. Tired of these dirty sand dogs
How about when these ****ers charge for nitrogen (air) in the tires or pinstripes on the car
These fees are why direct to consumer sales should not be prohibited.
Agreed, stealerships are only good for one thing...recalls.
Agreed. But car dealers are a powerful lobby and we all know who wins when it's the public good against lobbyists.
Yeah and our mortgages should also come directly from the feds so there’s no mark up on the rates, and also target should charge me what they pay, and the banks shouldn’t be allow to use my money or charge me fees for my account.. common stop being a cry baby and read the fine print, negotiate or leave, plain and simple.

Every dollar you pay to a car dealer is already a junk fee
So they should sell the car for nothing?
@robertkorth2911 no put some one is making commission and taking home 20 or 30k a month for every add on per vehicle. Not even adding some of the hidden fees
The fact most states prohibit buying from a manufacture directly (Texas with Tesla) it prevents consumers from getting the actual cost price or slightly above cost price. Without having to pay a middle man for a job that exists for no reason other than to extort fees from you for simply selling a car on a parking lot rather than a manufacture lobby.
@@celebrityrog hate to point this out, but buying straight from the manufacturer is not guaranteed to not get junk fees added. In the Netherlands, Tesla has just been reprimanded by the commercial code commission for adding hidden junk fees when selling a vehicle in the Netherlands, which is illegal in that country. If Tesla doesn't change its behaviour in that country, the next step will be a court case, and everyone who has purchased a car from Tesla since the rules changed could go in and reclaim the hidden fees of over a 1000 dollars worth now, or i could see some lawyers going for a mass claim.
@@robertkorth2911 Of course not but some dealers are ripping people off with BS fees, for example. I saw a dealer trying to charge $400 for nitrogen in tires.
Let us buy straight from the manufacturer!!!
That only helps if you’re buying a new car. Who can afford the $50,000 for that?
@@NotthatNeil I mean the average msrp of new cars start around $32-35k then dealers mark up $10-15k depending on how available it is in an area. There's about 5 or so dealerships in my area and a $29k car is going for $38-42k depending on where you look. I dont know about you but I probably wont buy a car thats almost 1.5x the msrp
The number one rule is "be prepared to say no and walk out"! If you don't follow that rule, the car salesperson will sense it, and then they have you!
NADA says, "needlessly lengthen the sales process." Whose fault is that? Most of the process is spent in the F&I office turning down one high-profit add-on after another and listening to the guy berating your stupidity for not wanting that extra $75/month add-on.
The sales process is long enough trying to get rid of these add on junk fees. Customers are often worn down with this stuff until they give up and buy something they don't want and don't need. NADA just wants to continue the same crap, because this is where they make money. Anyway, I doubt anything will change. Dealers will find a way around this.
@@roachtoasties never let yourself get worn down. the overwhelming majority of the time, people are buying a car because they want one not because they absolutely must have one. When the dealership starts down the junk fee path, politely stand up and walk out. You do not owe them an explanation as to why you are leaving, they already know. Don't be rude, nasty, calling them names, just stand up without saying a word and leave. Put a couple hundred dollars in your current car's repairs and drive it for another year or two or five. I politely tell them I do not want extended warranty, paint protection, nitrogen in the tires or any other add ons and I am giving them one opportunity to sell me the car without it. If they try, that is when I walk out. Yes, there are some dealerships who are hungry enough to do it my way. Those that are not, well, hopefully someone else will buy a car from them so that the sales persons can pay their kid's college tuition.
@@JeffandLeslie Good advice.
@@JeffandLeslie Pff....you're still doing it wrong. You should have negotiated everything through phone calls and emails before even *stepping foot* into a dealership. I've purchased 3 cars like this (they've always been out of state purchases as the prices tend to be better than my insulated local market) and it's always yielded great results. Everything is already negotiated; I rent a car or fly to the dealership. They usually pick me up at the airport or call an Uber/Lyft to deliver me to the dealership. I'm there for about 1 hour just signing paperwork and then I'm on my way home. That's it. I've only had to spend more than an hour at the dealership if I look at a local vehicle specifically for a test drive and see what they can do on price. After all of that and they say, "I don't have that much in it" (when I know the trade in value for the condition of that vehicle is about $5k-7k less than their asking price and they just had it on their lot for a couple weeks) I say, "thanks for the test drive, bruh" and walk out.
With the last car I purchased, I flew to Phoenix to buy the car and had to get it shipped to avoid paying Phoenix municipal sales tax. Even after all that, I still saved about $3k over local market pricing for a similar vehicle. Totally worth it.
Also:
An excellent resource into what *The Dealership Side* of a transaction is. Even if you've purchased 20 cars in your lifetime, if you've never sold at a dealership or been a "Finance Manager" then you may not understand the concepts the dealership is working for a potential vehicle sale. It's incredibly important to understand how the process works on their side to really cut through the bullsh*t and know if what they're saying is true or just straight up lying:
community.caredge.com/c/deal-school-3-0/
They also have a great community forum and how-to videos. I sold for almost a year back in 2013 to 2014, but there were some gaps in my knowledge on the dealership financing side (things like hold-back, triple net, floor planning costs, etc...). After spending some time expanding my knowledge and brushing up on what I already knew the entire car buying and negotiation process was much easier and less time consuming. Once they recognize you really know The Game and that you don't f*ck around and find out, they tend to lead you around much less, especially if you call them out on it. Price negotiation is still a thing, but if you're patient you're liable to get a better deal (being in a RUSH is *never* a good time to try to get a good deal. Time is your friend, so use it).
The NADA is a joke.
Dealerships seem to think of something new every year. It’s like behind closed doors they are saying “ people don’t hate us enough, what do we have to do to really make them angry…”

Absolutely agree that direct to consumers is the way to go. Dealerships have been destroying the car buying experience for years. Market adjustment prices? How does that help the consumer? Dealerships are so eager to talk about how they bring competition and value to the consumer. What value? You are charging consumers more money for the benefit of buying from your dealership with no additional value.
whenever you are getting to the dealer and about to buy car, - always ask for the last agreement page with the "total". It will be broke up to specifics. And look for the extras you don't want to pay and ask them to remove. And then and only then once they removed, - ask to print again last page and then carefully go through the all other pages. Specifically pay attention to not get any "warranty" thing you need to sign.
So true. While true we as buyers need to fully read the purchase order, ask questions, and not be afraid to walk away if something looks wrong, it is SO TRUE dealers are only in the business of scamming consumers and see how they can sneak in their fees and charge us over MSRP. Dealers must be abolished, allow purchase direct from manufacturer like Tesla does.

The last time I went to a dealer, it was full of a holes dressed in brand name attire and doing ZERO work, just hanging out fishing. There was like twenty people working at that dealer, and the only ones doing and actual WORK, were in the service department. Probably scamming oil changes and other overpriced parts.
This is the new low for stealership... they keep digging deeper into the bottomless pit.
First thing that should be investigated should be forced additions to the car, one that my cousin couldn't get taken off was nitrogen gas filled tires. 500$ for air in your tires.
Sometimes, the dealers build these fees into the negotiated price. For instance, when I bought a new vehicle, I negotiated the Out the Door price and had them draft up the paperwork. I saw that they lowered the purchase price but added in some dealer fees. But the bottom line negotiated price did not change. So there must be some incentive for them to tack on those fees. Maybe they dont pay taxes on dealer fee revenue?
I remember how many times the sales person wanted me to buy the extended warranty. I was like nah i know how to do my own maintenance. He was mad i didn't spend extra $$$

This happened to my brother with additional warranty he declined SEVERAL times during the new car purchase process. He had it added anyway. We went back and screamed down the dealership. They took the car back, and he ended up with a new one just a month later. Same model. The dealer had to put his initial one into the 'used' category.
Nice story that never happened.
@@BestMods168 God you're ignorant. Are you aware how common of an issue this is? It's extremely prevalent.
@@BestMods168 If you are referring to my encounter with my brother's car purchase, it absolutely DID happen. The dealer DID take his purchased car back and give him the same model and color in order to take off the extended warranty. The incredible outcome was that the warranty costs, fees, etc once removed brought down the price to almost $5,000 decrease! It was a good lesson. All we could surmise was that their dealership could have been on a 'complaints list' with the state oversight board and didn't need the aggro.
Let us buy directly from manufacturers like Tesla does!
The auto makers don’t want to be involved in the delivery process nor the loan process, though they do make a lot of money doing it if every buyer used their loan products! Not every buyer would want to use the automakers lender leading to having to employ people to handle the process. Dealers fill that role at no direct cost to the automaker. Dealers also provide a cheaper delivery process and eliminate much of the liability!
The way this works: the sales team closes you on a payment that is far above what it should be based on the price you think you are paying - then the finance department points out all the free things that come with that monthly payment. Some dealers use a scorched earth sales policy: where they extract the most money out of you with all sorts of bogus mandatory add ons - they assume you will never buy from them again and this is their one chance to empty your wallet.
Thank you. Should have been done centuries ago. Finally. Next stop, over inflated costs in health care system.

If a dealer is intentionally charging oil changes on EV. They should immediately be shut down.
An oil change has to do with the mechanical parts such as the engine which needs to be lubricated with oil, not with the fact that it runs on oil. All cars need oil changes however, charging extra for an oil change package upon buying the car is still ridiculous.
