The brothers purchased a used horse-drawn buggy for $70 and installed a 4 horsepower, single-cylinder gasoline engine. The car was first test-driven on the Howard Bemis farm in Chicopee, Massachusetts on September 21, 1893. The Duryea brothers went on to win the first American car race in 1895 and sold the first American-made gasoline car in 1896.
