Here's an interesting item as a cautionary tale! I did a similar thing to you by wrenching out an internal filter box with my hands (see: 0:53 in your video). I ended up in the hospital for 10 hours. As I was pulling out the siliconed-in plastic parts, the glass shattered, and even though I was wearing gloves, a big shard of glass sliced my forearm open, deeply. Without the high gloves I was wearing, it could have been a cut near my wrists!!!! Many stiches later I was home and I tossed the tank in the trash. I couldn't tell in the video if there was silicone there holding the back panel on, or if you cut it out then pulled. I made the stupid mistake of pulling and twisting without cutting! Just a cautionary tale for your viewers!
Wow! 🤪 I was fully aware that I might break the glass, but didn’t have the brains to protect myself. Although, I used the knife to really loosen the plastic inside to come off easy. But gloves would have been much safer 🤔😬
Hey buddy, it’s bobcat here! I have been thinking about starting to use Kalkwasser. I was wondering how and if I could just manual dose it instead of putting it in my ATO container? Plus how much should I dose for a 20 gallon mixed reef?
Hey Bobcat! Cool! It’s a bit more work, but you can do it. Called the Slurry method. Lots of trial and testing. First thing, test your tank for calcium, alk and Ph. I would mix 1/8 of a teaspoon to a cup of rodi, just to mix it up. And then poor in a strong flow area, maybe where your return comes in, after the lights go out. The negative thing about the slurry method is you can’t put too much in at one time. It could raise your ph to high to fast. Dangerous. You’ll have to do it 2-3 times in a 24 hour period. I would do it 10pm, then early am, then mid day. Test the morning after the first evening dose. calcium and ph. If they are ok, then continue the rest of the day. And test the next morning before the morning dose. 👍🏻lots of work.
Hey Tom ,off the reef path, are u for the giants jets, bills or all … im gonna miss brady and getting to super bowl every other year fun for the 22 though. Woulda been kool to have seen u play with brady
I was wondering how the pods got through the pump and survived. Now I'm actually right so I'm going to put a pod condo inside of the tank take what do you think
Hi Christopher, once there established in your display, no need to be concerned about that. However, some reefers keep small rock rubble to provide populations to grow without being eaten. Once again different people say different things. If you have a pod eating fish, chances are you could always use more pods in your tank, unless you have 100,s of gallons. Then the tank may provide enough for the fish. That’s why it’s important to get all your fish to eat frozen or dried food. Especially the dragonets. 😊👍🏻
@@TOMReefer I have a lot of rock in this little tank 20 gallons with 12 with 20 pounds of rock in it I have a lot of rock in this little tank 20 gallons with 20 pounds of rock in it . I'm also building AA refugee in the middle chamber. I plan on raising a pair of Mandarin gobies. So much
That’s good, aquacultured mandarin dragonets could survive in 20 if they are eating prepared foods like, slow sinking pellets. If not, you will have to feed live pods and live baby brine shrimp. 👍🏻
@Coral-reef. The Sicce line are decent. And the size depends on how much flow you want to run into the bucket. The more powerful the pump, the more flow into the bucket and more noise from the water flow. The sicce 1.5 might work well.
Haaaa. That cool. Recycled every thing on the Tom reefer train 🤩. Are you according with the green light back to your family photographies ? What is the plane inside the refugium ?
Haha, always using old stuff😃the green light is just for video studio effect 🤪looks cool. Now I will have to move it😊I will wait until I see nitrate and phosphate before using the refugium. Maybe some sea grasses, macro, and some chaetomorpha. 👍🏻😊
@@TOMReefer good idea. I read a post about the refugium. It can become a problème due to remove too much quickly nutriments of the water and risk to decrease the level of potassium. But like we do water change every week it is normally ok.
Hi James, I’m not sure where you are from? But the best way is to find a local glass shop and explain what you want. You would have to give them exact measurements for the panels. You could try online, but shipping costs are quite high. I investigated that way and it was better to go local.
@@TOMReefer I live in the eastern panhandle of WV 1hr n a half from DC or Baltimore, 15 min from VA, MD or PA. It's a crazy place to live. But we do have a few local glass shops thanks for the info I'll give them a call. Being in the market to purchase my first home has made it where I can't setup any of my big tanks they are just sitting in storage with a ton of equipment. So relying on my nano's to feed my reefing addiction has become a god send so when I find the perfect home drain some water and carry these bad boys by hand to the truck. I love it! Have a good one Mr. Tom Reefer
Hey Tom quick question yesterday I went out to an LFS and I was looking A Mandarin goby and it was so small I was scared of it do you know what we can purchase agricultured ones that are slightly bigger
Hey Chris, mine was quite small also, however I can’t compare to what your small is. Biota Marine in FLA. Call them and ask how large. They were the first to culture the Mandarin.
Stuck with my tank. Got rid of the Dino’s and my hair algae is a little better. Jus bought some pods from algae barn and an ORA red urchin to clean the rest up. My nutrients are still a little high I’m trying to get the tank to settle in. I’m happy I stuck with it .. for now 😆

Great video as always! I’m waiting to see what light you’re going to use on the refugium so I can get one. I have a finger leather coral that part of it has gotten really pale and the whole thing seems pretty limp. It has been fine for months but now doesn’t seem to be doing good. It’s still opening up and the polyps come out just pale and limp. Any ideas 💡 Thanks for the help as always 👍
Hey Corey, I’ll probably put an A80 over it? Not sure. I’d like to grow various macro algae, and not sure what light will be best yet. As far as your leather? I’m sure you’ve tested Parameters? If everything else is looking good, you may want to inspect very closely to see if there’s anything on it, nudibranch etc. if it’s just one section, you might try and cut that part off.
So I’ve been trying to come up with a way to do this for the past week, I haven’t been able to stop think about it…. Then I saw this!
Hi E, hope it helped! I’ll be completing soon. 😊👍🏻
