Just to throw something else your way to think about... Most of the books you mentioned focus on how we view our reality. One aspect that is interesting is that our reality is also shaped by the language we speak (and the limitations therein). This is apparent with polyglots as they share how their view of the world has changed through language learning. Certain concepts that are important in one language, may not even exist in another language. And metaphors often break down from one language to another. So, just some random food for thought for you!

How to Do Nothing sounds really fascinating. I've been talking to my boyfriend about the attention economy and he'd love it.

Fantastic list - heard of four them - and How To Do Nothing has recently become a new favorite! Just put Metaphors We Live By on hold too.

I love to hear when others love what I love! Haha 😊 Metaphors We Live By got a bit dry in the second half for me, but I think the rest of the book was worth it!

"Metaphors We Live By" does sound really good. When you started to explain it, I thought it was just Nietzsche's idea of all language being metaphor, but it sounds like this book gets into something more explicit. I think I will have to pick this one up. It sounds like something I would really get into. Though I too read more non-fiction than fiction, I have to admit, I have only heard of "How to Do Nothing," on this list beforehand. Thanks for sharing! 😊😊

Ah, I haven't really read Nietzsche specifically, but I have one of his books on my shelf, so maybe I should give it a go! Lakoff and Johnson suggest an "experientialist theory of truth" and claim that it's a better way of looking at how we create/receive reality than objectivist or subjectivist theories! Which I like as a performance scholar because I don't like the idea that humans just subjectively create all reality... But I also don't think we can directly access truth outside ourselves... I like that here it's posited as a kind of feedback loop!

And all their examples of metaphor in our language use are just really really interesting!
