Halo 5: Guardians In 2021 - Was It REALLY That Bad?

  • Halo 5 is often regarded as the worst Halo when it comes to its campaign. With Halo Infinite out in the wild, I thought now would be a good time to revisit the game and talk about all that 343 got right and wrong with this maligned title.

    Halo 5 was the first Halo I wasn’t excited for and didn’t play at launch. Then hearing from friends and the community it was terrible I went in with such low expectations I ended up really enjoying it. My biggest problem with the story is it feels like a sequel to a game we haven’t played. Also like you said Halo campaigns come with different expectations than other multiplayer shooters. For example COD Vanguards campaign makes Halo 5 campaign look like a masterpiece.

      I'd actually say that Halo 5 feels like the middle to a story. Like not even a part two of a trilogy but more like the fourth issue of a twelve issue graphic novel. You don't get the context nor the resolution.

    The biggest problem with the most recent trilogy is none of the games have anything to do with each other. You can skip right from 3 to infinite and be only slightly more lost than if you played 4 and 5.

    I played through the MCC and Halo 5 before Infinite launched. I was actually late to the game, so I hadn't played any of them before. I liked Reach the most, but 5 wasn't bad at all. The multiplayer was actually really good. Certainly better than Halo 4 at the very least. The forge was absolutely amazing (when it came out, which like Infinite it wasn’t at launch).
    The campaign was just so atrocious though. And I think a large part of the hatred for Halo 5 was due to the marketing lies. The “hunt the truth” campaign may have been the WORST case of false advertising I’ve ever seen for any game (maybe No Mans Sky is worse, but it’s close).

  • @effortlessfury

    I wanna start by saying that I agree with your overall point that there were good ideas with poor execution. However, I've got several more-than-little nitpicks with your arguments.
    6:30 Chief is not a way higher rank than Locke. It's unclear where "Spartan" ranks compared to the Chief considering the Chief has an actual NCO rank (Master Chief Petty Officer), but prior to becoming a Spartan, Locke was a Lt. Commander.
    Second, I've always disputed folks who cry foul at the fight scene. Neither of them are trying to hurt each other. Locke already previously established that he respects the Chief and all he's done for all Humanity. Chief is not looking to go as far as killing a fellow Human or Spartan, he's not ACTUALLY a traitor. If you view that fight as two super soldiers trying to measure just how much force is needed to complete their goal, it makes a lot more sense...it's just not communicated well visually. It expects you to understand that they're not actually at each others' throats...which the marketing does NOT help with.
    In hindsight, I understand that the marketing was going for "Whose version of the truth is the real truth?" which actually also applied back onto the marketing. The marketing's versions of the truth were all exaggerations, which is a small commentary on how the truth often becomes distorted and exaggerated as it is passed around. That's was NOT a great way to approach marketing this game, however.
    7:27 Chief's realizing that Cortana is off the rails didn't happen off-screen, it happened on-screen for you, the player, during the mission Genesis; I do agree more than that was needed to make it clear but an attempt was made there.
    11:33 Calling thrusters too Call of Duty is an interesting take considering MJOLNIR has always canonically had them. Previously, those thrusters were only rated for vacuum use (which is how the Chief is able to actually control his movement in a vacuum). Having more powerful versions than can be used in small bursts in-atmo is actually pretty Halo, and that's coming from a 20-year lore vet. CoD thrusters seem like it's ripping off other things rather than the other way around. I can understand how these abilities made the skill ceiling too high in Multiplayer but it honestly made the game sandbox feel more like Spartans had always been portrayed in the books (as the games have ALWAYS felt dissonant from that).
    Also, it took years for people to soften to Halo 5's multiplayer at all. A very long time.

    • @luka-1241
      @luka-1241 Рік тому +1

      Very well said. Spartans are supposed to upgrade, use all the latest technology. Master chief is an almost indestructible badass (at least how he's portrayed), his bulky appearance with a darker visor and armor in terms of colour made him genuinely fit the legendary super soldier

    • @alexfrost2799
      @alexfrost2799 Рік тому +1

      Your last point is exactly why I probably like Halo 5's multiplayer the most and don't have a problem with all of it's features. The game gave you the tools to actually make you feel like a hyperlethal badass. As someone who has read some books and a lot of Warhammer 40k Space Marine media, I know Spartans and other supersoldiers are supposed to have abnormally-high dexterity and be lightning bruisers instead of lumbering tanks. The games have influenced most game-only fans that they are the latter, which goes completely against their combat doctrine. They are too used to Spartans being invincible superheroes instead of elite (but still killable) soldiers.
      The equipment in Halo 5 feels like it was meant to show a player how a Spartan would actually fight. They will actually shoulder-charge you if you get in their way (Spartan Charge), they will slam on your body from above with their bulk (Ground Pound), they know when it is a good idea to maneuver or retreat (Sprint, Slide, and Clamber), and they have reaction times far faster than a normal human (Thruster Pack). I think normal joe gamers didn't get what truly made a Spartan a supersoldier, until Halo 5 showed them and they realized just how out of their league their thought process was.

    Gameplay was my personal favorite, I felt like a Spartan for the first time in being able to do crazy physical stuff. If you really think about it, the only thing that gave you a different shooting experience from other shooters, despite being super soldiers, was shields. So with the added Spartan abilities, I felt like a Spartan. And the gunplay was the best imo, each weapon had a good feel to it and an ease in use.
    Storyline was jumbled, I personally would have loved for the Didact to have been the big bad of the trilogy considering he's a Forerunner who hates humanity and this is the Reclaimer saga, where humanity is reclaiming the Mantle. It would have been cool to see him fully utilized, maybe holding Cortana captive in the Domain and using the Guardians since they're the most powerful Forerunner weapons. That could have explained Cortana surviving and not ruining her character. The Didact would have even played in awesomely to the current Infinite story with the Endless, since we would have an actual Forerunner around.
    Multiplayer was the best one I've played imo. I think the maps had a good balance, were scaled properly and had tons of spots where you could do cool things. The Req system I liked because you got to choose what you wanted to play with, if you wanted a tank, you didn't have to hope it gets dropped off on your side of the map and you outrace your teammates to get it. The social aspect was clutch as you could add people as friends easily and get a good fireteam going pretty easily.
    I do hope they port it over to MCC so that it can come to PC, currently as it is, once I get to 100 on this season's battle pass in Infinite, I'll probably stop playing till the next one.

    • @Gbag34
      @Gbag34 2 роки тому +4

      @xMisterFlamex I think their biggest narrative misstep was actually Halo 4. If you are a fan of the lore and the books, the Didact and Librarian, as well as pretty much the entire Forerunner race probably deserved a trilogy similar to how the Flood got their trilogy from CE to Halo 3. The way we are slowly introduced to the Flood and learn about what the Flood is, how it spreads, what it’s intentions are, why the rings were built, how the Halo Array works, I could go on. We should have gotten this level of complexity and story telling about the Forerunners. One of the biggest mysteries leftover after Halo 3 got glossed over within minutes in Halo 4. They just release the Didact and just do a “bad guy bad” “good guy good” bullshit story without any complexity. Halo 4 should have been an entire trilogy with careful pacing and a less black and white good versus evil plot line. The Forerunners are some of the best lore in the franchise and they got done super dirty in Halo 4. Which then led into Halo 5 which didn’t even need to exist.

I didn't like how the character models are rendered at 30fps, but I suppose it was worth it at the time. My biggest gripe with Halo 5 is how the story basically requires you to read and watch hours of external lore material in order to understand basic plot points and even then it felt rushed, under developed, and nonsensical at times. They did this a little in Halo 4 but they doubled down HARD with Halo 5. Also the only reason Team Osiris and Blue Team are in the game is to satisfy the 4 player co-op because they have literally zero character development. There are some cool moments especially with The Covenant/Swords of Sanghelios War but not much else. Also Spartan Locke had a lot of potential but he just blows...
    If they took out Osiris and Blue Team and just simplified the story to Locke vs Master Chief (LIKE THE ADS PROMISED) then I think they could have had a potentially better story.

      TBF the Created are still a thing; the only part of the faction they did away with was Cortana herself, and even then it was to advance the Chief becoming human story arc that was started in Halo 4 and put on ice on 5. Blue Team and Osiris are also around, but quite literally MIA due to the Banished ambush (which serves as a beliveable way to sideline a large chunk of the cast until 343's ready to reintroduce them. I think it's safe to say that all roads end at Zeta Halo, and that 343 want to use Zeta Halo (an interesting location in its own right, before you even factor in the deep lore) as a central plot device to converge many of their different narratives. The Created, Blue team, the Flood, the Banished, ONI, Osiris, the Precursers, the Endless, Alpha-Nine; if Infinite follows through on being a decade-long platform (which also means a decade of stories to tell), then there's no shortage of stories they could tell revolving around Zeta Halo and a seemingly endless struggle for control occuring on its surface.

    Even though I think Infinite has better gameplay and campaign, I have found myself going back to Halo 5 after barely playing the game in the past. I've gone from rank seven to nineteen in two days. I went back to Halo 5, because for what it lacks in gameplay (which is still very fun btw, just a little off from classic Halo) it makes up for in content. And it also has a semi-competent progression system, and something to grind for. I think that score based XP would instantly make Infinite 50x more replayable. A lot of people also say that Halo 5 doesn't feel like Halo. I disagree. Yes, it's not exactly like it, but it still has all the basic Halo gameplay elements: fair starts, power weapons, heavy grenade usage, precision weapon meta, fun and viable sandbox, community features, and a progression system. Even though I love Infinite, I'm getting much more enjoyment out of Halo 5 right now. Also, Heroic and Mythic Warzone Firefight modes are an absolute blast, and you can find matches for them very quickly. It's also more fair with the req packs, because it's all PVE. I also would love to see Warzone Firefight in Infinite. Also, Mythic Firefight only on weekends I really like. It's similar to the double XP weekends from Halo 3, because it gives a ton more XP than Heroic WFF. Again, I really hope that we can get all these things in Infinite.

    I'm currently in the middle of playing H5. I started last month with Halo CE for the first time ever other than a few H3 multiplayer matches I played in the past with a friend (sniper 1v1s).
    I hated Halo CE's gameplay and repetitive levels, but a friend of mine that went through all of them recently told me to keep at it, so I went to Halo 2 and enjoyed it a lot more because it was more streamlined, but the story left me confused (the cutscenes of the remaster were banging tho, presentation was just nailing it across the board). Halo 3 felt too short, and actually a bit of a stepback from Halo 2. Then I played Reach, and loved it, at that point it was my favorite game in the series.
    I then played Halo 4, with quite low expectations because everyone and their mother had told me how bad it was. And I really ended up loving Halo 4. Surprisingly, it's my favorite story-wise (closely followed by Reach), because it actually made Master Chief and Cortana have personalities, they were likeable and their goals were understandable.
    And so far, I've been enjoying 5 as well. I have been a bit confused as it doesn't really feel connected to Halo 4 so far, I feel like there's a game missing in between, so from that end I can understand people's gripes. But taking the story as-is, I enjoy it so far.

    I didn't hate it, but I can understand some of the complaints I've come across. With or without references to the expanded universe, there were DEFINITELY things that could've been fleshed out more effectively. Chief doing a complete 180 that quickly in regards to Cortana definitely doesn't make sense. Even though the process was different, aren't Spartan 4's still supersoldiers? It feels like people are overthinking the fight between Chief and Locke.

    The main issue with H5 is the campaign.
    Namely...three factors.
    First, it was a Halo spin off game masquerading as a main title. MC was not the main character...Locke was. It wasn't even a co-star a la Arbiter. This was Lockes game.
    Second, the marketing of the game was highly misleading
    Third....too much lore set in the books and not the games. That creates a HUGE disconnect in the story. Not to mention so many concepts underdeveloped or sidelined.

    I think the biggest mistake they made was even having Locke and his team to begin with. Instead they could've spent more time establishing the backstory for Blue Team and show the audience how they are the closest thing Chief has to having family members because they have through so much together through Spartan training, this can allow people that don't know much about Blue Team to catch up. Wasted potential.

    I hated it. I bought it for more split screen with my wife & bros cuz we're still prefer couch play. 5 is the first Halo that removed split screen and I didn't think that staple would be removed especially with a built in squad at your back.
    I hated the "missions" where you piddle around talking to folks.. bro.. that is NOT Halo!
    I think Chief has only 3 missions while we play the new guy with too many led lights on his armor like we're 12 or sum'n. Having sprint, dash, hover, ground pound and a charge melee was too many abilities at once that didn't make it feel Halo. I still prefer Reach where you had to choose to sprint or take a single armor ability. It feels a lot more like Halo that way.
