- I've made it pretty clear that I think 2021 was a low year for gaming. Today, we put that very idea under a microscope by highlighting what I view as the worst of the worst throughout this year in gaming. Prepare yourselves and let's do this!

Dishonored and Prey are right up there in my favorite games of all time. Havent played Deathloop yet, although it sits in my Steam backlog, mostly because I have heard the mixed reviews from Arkane fans.

I think Skill up explains perfectly the issues with Deathloop. The fact you don't see the changes you make as they happen you just back out to a menu and then pass time makes the whole 'time loop' boring in my eyes.
Maybe they'll have the game revamped by the time the Series X version releases. Sometimes it's better to get a game a year later...after it's been player tested and patched on a different console.

I feel the Deathloop rant. When you watch DAO evolve into DA2; when you watch ME3 become Anthem, you just wonder WTH is going on at a studio. One can only hope that others stand up and say "Actually, if you liked Deathloop, play their earlier games; they actually were groundbreaking and had deep storylines."
Dragon Age 2 had like a year of development for an absolutely massive game and they actually did a pretty good job while remaining loyal to the Lore

@@cesare4926 but the choice to try to put out a game that quickly showed, which was something Matty pointed to in a couple of the biggest disappointment games. It could have been SO much better
I played Dishonored and dropped it after 1 hour, played dishonored 2 because maybe the first was too old and i dropped it after 30 mins. Dishonored was trash to me, played Deathloop and beat it im 30 hours i loved deathloop. 1000x better than dishonored

I agree 1000% about Deathloop. It seemed like everybody fell into the hype trap when the game itself was barely a puddle deep

Yeah I agree..it's like these games mentioned are actually quite playable and dare I say fun even if they are disappointments...it's a very clickbaity and hyperbole to suggest that these are objectively terrible games

This is just where the industry is headed. Almost every game released this last year was a hollow experience. Say what you want about COVID, but most of these games had been in development for years leading up to the release. Add together all the failures from up to 5 years before even, and I honestly think the gaming industry is just doing the least amount of work for the profit the accrue in the end. I mean, look at cyberpunk. Game released well, how it did lol but now we're seeing a huge uptick in concurrent players and I honestly think it's just boredom, lack of decent content and the fact that it's so cheap, it's basically free. Yet, because of this, people are leaving better reviews and in the long run, what the CEO said about "people will remember Cyberpunk 2077 as a good game", more and more true as time goes on. Then, people don't understand why the next game is even worse. You don't have to like them, they're making money either way and that's all they care about.
Dishonored 1 and Prey are still some of my favorite games to play. I pre-ordered Deathloop and after 6 hours, I just stopped. It didn't feel like the same games I fell in love with.
Same here and I didn't even read reviews or saw the multiple "10s" it was getting prior to buying. I bought simply because it looked cool and it was made by Arkane Studios. IMO, this is their weakest title to date. Doesn't have any charm to it and I can't force myself to continue playing it anymore. Maybe in a year or two I'll come back and maybe my opinion will change, but for now, definitely one of my biggest disappointments of 2021.

@@blakbear6528 It's not really a run and gun type of game. If that's what you're expecting then you'd be disappointed. It's much like Bioshock but even less action and more a focus of exploration. it doesn't hold your hand much.
@@maineman5757 for me it was the setting and aesthetic. That and the enemies were bland and boring. Just like Deathloop, I could tell from the trailers it was going to be souless and it kind of was. Prey was definitely the biggest sign of decline from the studio before Deathloop. Seeing how much love that game gets makes it all "click" as to why the decided to make Deathloop the way it is. Just a natural evolution from where they left off. Then add the fact that every studio seems to be trying to push out titles that "pull in the money" without having to put much effort into them, and it's only going to get worse imo.
@@blakbear6528 agreed. Prey was a snooze fest. Fist sign of major decline for the studio imo. But the reviews say otherwise 🤷♂️ might be some insight into how Deathloop got so many good reviews too...

Yo can we give a collective applause for the editing. This was really refreshing and felt different to all his other videos. The background music was like mysterious and really relaxing. Bravo. Keep it up

Honestly, i think that almost everyone that finished Deathloop never tried a Dishonored, the way they talk about it as if it was something new and an immersive sim while actually being none of them, really demostrate it. But still, i have to admit that although its flaws, i still liked It, something about the setting, narrative and the design of the game really made me appreciate the majority of It, sure, the level design Is not even comparable to the finessed maps inside Karnaka or Dunwall, but it's actually still better than most of lately released games. The AI is really really bad at the point that stealthing through the streets is impossible and frustrating, BUT, if you play it as a more chaotic shooter, It is more satisfying and funny. There are very little choices you can make to complete a mission in your own way, most of the time they take you by hand, and this is probably the worst thing of the game, i think that they chose this more linear progression to open up to new audience, because all of the other games they made were, economically, complete failures and sadly the majority of the people like it more this way. I hope this is going to be an unicum and that they will come back with another masterpiece in the future (excluding Redfall, not promising at all)
I played Deathloop. It's my GOTY. I have played through the Dishonored games more times than I can count with 2 being my 2016 GOTY. The difference is, I didn't go in expecting Dishonored. I went in allowing Deathloop to be something of it's own, which it was. I expected the more action oriented style and as a high chaos Dishonored player I was right at home. As for the guiding by the hand thing, this was not my experience. As a big Dishonored player I am trained to just naturally explore every nook and cranny and discovered a lot of things completely naturally. I see people complaining about the handholding objectives and say they beat it in 12 hours.. It took me 25 hours to beat because I didn't just run from marker to marker. I explored side content and discovered things on my own. I feel like if the handholding was an issue that's by your own volition. You're completely free to actually explore and discover things on your own. If you ran from marker to marker in Red Dead 2 you'd probably think that was mediocre, as well.
I think this will end up like Sekiro. A lot of Souls fans hated the game at first because they were pigeon holing FromSoft into making Dark Souls again and were not allowing Sekiro to be it's own thing. Sekiro shares 80% of the Souls design but does it's own thing with the rest. Same for Deathloop and Dishonored. Obviously very similar but a departure in the same way as Sekiro. I think Deathloop will be appreciated more in time.
I prefer deathloop to dishonored personally. I had way more fun with it.
Deathloop is absolutely an immersive sim, the game’s multiplayer proves it. If you aren’t making the best use of your sandbox you’re going to get killed; the bread and butter of immersive sims is emergent gameplay and Deathloop has that in spades. Not to mention the obsession this game has with audio logs and environmental story telling.
@@JohnLozo the interactability of the environment is really poor, you can't use the level design to your advantage very often, usually you just need to shoot and hide behind a corner. In my opinion an immersive sim has to give you multiple options and scenarios to get the most out of It (an example: in Dishonored usually you can trigger an event that could cause the death of an npc indirectly and creatively thanks to the great implementation of physics, level design and abilities), the multiplayer thing is cool but It doesn't really add much to the experience, invasions are not thant much of a deal because of the poor integration in the loop system, and usually the approach doesn't change much from normal fights
@@gesucristo2357 I think if you treat deathloop as a stealth game and hide behind corners taking enemies out carefully with silenced pistols then you'll probably have a miserable time.
Colt and Julianna are immortal hunters with crazy powers. The game is in its element when you're jumping across rooftops, linking enemies with nexus and shooting into a crowd with an explosive rifle. Stealth is there as an option but approaching it as an action game is far more rewarding.

Mad respect at sticking to your guns with Deathloop! A game I initially enjoyed until it all fell apart, and I’m forever angry at the ridiculous review simping this one got by many outlets!
Yeah but at the same time I would hard press to call these games the WORST..like big difference between the worse games or just disappointments..is deathloop really THE WORST game?? Or is it just the worst game arcane studios made but still serviceable for the masses..
I hated deathloop at first and came to like it by the end. The way everything was connected was very clever. They could have used different enemy types and more of the moments where you really had to think outside the box but it was a good game 7/10. Wasnt better then dishorored 2 or Prey but still good enough IMO.
I loved The Ascent. It had its flaws, but still one of my top games this year.

I thought the Ascent was super pretty and had a super awesome premise, but the lore and story was overwhelming.

I enjoyed The Medium. I agree that it’s slow, and it could really had used some proper/deeper gameplay. But some of the themes made me really uncomfortable, and I quite enjoyed the monster. Many of his lines just made my hair stand on end. It’s not an incredible game by any means, but I got some of the things I’m looking for in a game like this.
I'm right there with ya, I LOVED The Medium. I don't think anything Bloober has done has been bad. Love the split screen tech, loved the Story, Characters, ect. It for sure wasn't anywhere near as scary or creepy as other games they've done but that wasn't the point to The Medium. But I might be a bit weird, I think the Medium was a tech showcase of what they could do with a Silent Hill game with the split screen hellscape and real world dual screen thing. Imagine that but in Silent Hill. Plus there is rumors that Bloober has been working on a Silent Hill game so we'll see what the future holds.
I quite enjoyed it. It wasn't scary but very very few horror games are scary so I don't mind that.
I thought it looked nice, the story was intriguing and I enjoyed exploring the environments. A nice addition to gamepass.
For a game that was free on game pass and a AA title it was pretty good imo. I don’t think Matty knows what the fuck he’s talking

Far Cry really bored the shit out of me. Beat the game, told myself early on, "I'm never gonna replay this."

The moment I saw the "distracted boyfriend meme" with the man as "game deveopers", "battle royale" as the girlfriend...and "time loops" as the distraction...I knew this was the next fad we're scheduled to be utterly sick of in a year.
Death-loop? More like Poop-Loop. The “journalist” were afraid to give it anything less than a 10 because it would be that end of their career and their peers would cancel them.

So true about Far Cry. Ubisoft latched onto the Far Cry 3 ethos so hard it’s become their entire identity. Every game they’ve made since (not just Far Cry) has just been a rehashing of those basic ideas through a slightly different lens. What’s that old saying about insanity again? Vaas remembers
I rather they stick to mechanics that made earlier games in the series successful as opposed to the bullshit they are pushing now with x defiant and IPs like ghost recon and rainbow six. I really don't understand people's obsession with every single game needing to be innovative or do something new yet go apeshit for JRPGs like tales, nier, final fantasy for example or even the upcoming forspoken. Bloodborne and the souls series, hello? Elden ring? Smh.
So proud of myself for not buying Far Cry 6. I bought Far Cry 4 and 5 because I used to be a massive fan of the franchise since the original but I couldn't even be bothered to finish those games.. I knew 6 wouldn't be any different.
I enjoyed Ascent. One of those game that i really enjoyed from start to finish. The story is generic but I do hope it gets a sequel and build on the good things and maybe change and improve on things that you did not like.
PS: I'm surprised GTA Trilogy was not included. I honestly think that game is far worse than some games that was listed here. Anyway, it's YOUR top 5 list so I get it.
I agree with Biomutant. The idea is amazing, I just wish they hammered down the combat better. Most games can get by nicely when they have great combat.
I had fun with Deathloop, definitely nothing groundbreaking but it was fun. Definitely no plans to go back and replay it though.

The ascent was one of the best games of the year for me. But you have to play these games co op. My advice - Stop playing Co op designed games in single player. Plus if you have game pass you're either not trying many games or you managed to dodge the awful ones. I jump on loads to try them, not all suit my gaming style. Some are truly terrible.
I finished The Ascent and thought it was awesome! It had fun, solid gameplay, that I thought overshadowed its shortcomings.
I’ve tried to play Dishonored 2, but I wasn’t really into it. I’ll have to give it another try. Prey on the other hand was fantastic. Arkane really nailed the Sci-Fi vision perfectly.

I totally agree with the Deathloop call man! i cant even get myself to go back an play it after a few sessions where with dishonored 2 i find myself still going back randomly to this day.
My biggest issue with Far Cry 6 is that we didn't get a map editor. That's been a thing that I loved since Far Cry Instincts on the original Xbox. Not having that meant that a huge chunk of the game was missing and I lost interest. This is the first Far Cry game since the original that I never touched.
Ascent was pretty damn fun man, even running into higher up CPUs. Made it challenging.
for me, it is always a bad thing when you can expect exactly what a game will be when that game isn't really meant to be predictable... i think its safe to say that all of these games were predictable in what they were trying to do while also falling short.

I really enjoyed the medium. Didn't feel cut/copy, & paste to me which is difficult to do these days. So many games seem like another anymore usually. I felt it was to short though.
I liked the medium it just felt so short and like there was so much more they couldve done with it. Thats why id call it a let down

2021 was the year of the backlog for me. Of all the games i've played this year: Halo, Doom eternal, Yakuza 0, Dragon Quest XI etc, Prey is my favourite. I find it to have the best level design i've ever experienced. Having not played Deathloop yet, I find hearing your thoughts on it to be very disheartening.
Agreed about Ascent. It had the trappings of something good, but it just never came together.
I had fun with FarCry for about 10 hours, then I realized every mission was the same thing over and over, put my controller down and don't regret not going back

Only one I disagree with is The Ascent, it was my first ever game in that genre and I loved it. The world was beautiful, the lore was enjoyable and immersive, the gameplay was fun and the story was at the very least average to me. Made up for a solid 8/10 in my eyes.
I'll be ready to give deathloop a try when it drops on gamepass next Sept. I watched some extended gameplay sessions and definitely didn't get the hype. Mostly agree with this list.
I shit on deathloop for bit for the crazy scores I didn’t think it deserved, but I caved for a sale of it being $23, and man you know what? It’s pretty good, I’m enjoying it, and I’m not an fps player or lover, it’s got character it almost has that essence that goldeneye 64 had, it’s no 10/10, I’d say 8/10.

Blows my mind that Deathloop got 10s from sites like IGN and GameSpot, whilst Arkane's earlier (and much better) games got 8s and 9s. Maybe their standards for games have just dropped over the years.

I remember when ubisoft used to put out some great games and try something a little different beyond good and evil the prince of persia trilogy splinter cell and the like now there games just feel like work a chore to play.
Far Cry 6 is extremely easy. I uninstalled after 5 enemies in a row missed every shot towards me.
I guarantee in 5-8 years Biomutant is gonna be considered an underrated gem.

I honestly don't think I played much that came out this year, there just wasn't anything I had to get day one and play, plus having a pretty big backlog has me sitting on most things.
The last time I went "that was it?" was the ending to Gears 5. I beat the final boss and just sat there completely underwhelmed. It just proved to me how much more the series focus has gone from single player campaign to multiplayer pvp with added transactions.
I respect your opinion but it hurts seeing “The Ascent” on this list I really loved this game
Couldn't agree any more about Ascent. I just could understand the love for that game, and I saw it made many reviewers game of the year list. As to Deathloop, every time I see gameplay of the game, it makes me happy I don't own a PS and never played the game.
The Medium is a great Game Pass title if you want a mini horror experience. There really isn’t gameplay here but it’s like watching a movie and catching little details of the world. There’s worse ways to pass time, but yeah there’s also better ways to pass it.
2020 was bad, last year even worse.

I agree with you on The Medium (Slow moving, no action, tank controls at 30fps)....isn't my kinda game. I'd also put The Gunk on that list (weird faced skinny legged girl who goes around vacuuming up alien poop) (A few bad Indies also released this year: Boyfriend Dungeon and Nongunz2) Oh...and that crappy new Serious Sam game.
You should go watch Skill Up's Deathloop review. You will enjoy it, he tears it down and he is a big Arkane fan too.

I cannot, to this day, understand why everyone believes that game is great. It's an average game at best, and I don't think it's better than RDR1 in any way beyond the surface level graphics.

I was confused with several goty nominees in TGA (psychonauts 2, deathloop) but the only one I didn't play out of the nominees was deathloop. I just couldn't get myself to play it or even begin to be interested lol. So sadly I can't comment on it.

Biomutant was such a great premise but the devs spread themselves too thin. I hate to say it but I'd have preferred if for their first game they went a more linear way like KOTOR to set the stage for their franchise's world. Then have the sequel open up after they got the dev team size to realize that goal.
I got stuck in the Ascent. Under leveled and I ran out of side quests to level up and couldn’t advance. Really disappointed me cause I enjoyed the game

I had a lot of fun with The Ascent but I agree with all your points one hundred percent. It did make the game extra difficult, frustrating and left you feeling like it could've been better.
I think you're on mark with Deathloop and FarCry 6. I haven't played any of the other ones. But, I was so surprised seeing all of those 10/10 scores after actually playing the game. We're so hungry for games that just aren't complete garbage, I guess.

Was given FAR CRY 6 as a gift and yeah well, Ubisoft sucks. Everything Matty said about this game is 10000% spot on.

I somewhat agree, Deathloop is very disappointing when you know it was made by Arkane, that’s not to say it wasn’t my worst game this year. I feel as if there wasn’t a Arkane badge next to deathloop I’d enjoy the game more, but since I know what kind of master pieces Arkane can make, it really saddens me to know they made a generic game.
The Medium is in my top 5 of the year. I didnt really bash it for the gameplay because I didnt expect some sort of resident evil or condemned level gunplay. It just had a really good story (although the ending was a little shaky), atmosphere, and music.
I never even finished Far Cry 5 because it had already felt samey to me, so I don't expect I will pickup Far Cry 6 either. I am literally going backwards to play older games these days because they honestly feel newer to me than new games sometimes.
Arkane is one of my favorite devs, but Deathloop was a big letdown for me too.
The Medium had a “decent” story, but sometimes it just got frustrating trying to figure out where to go, lol
Imo it has a horrible story. Worst game of 2021 for me

I still don't understand the problems with deathloop, though I've done my research, and it's basically an incomplete version of Prey: Mooncrash. People revered that expansion like it was the holy grail(for whatever the small audience it had), and it was said to have a really deep gameplay loop like people had never seen before.
Coming back to deathloop, people often draw comparisons to that older dlc, and I think I understand it a bit. I'm still trying to finish both dishonored games first,so only then I'll know what makes them special and deathloop as "bad" as I supposedly is, because you don't just get a near 90 metacritic for being "dissimilar", so I'm intrigued to judge it myself whenever it drops.
If you were disappointed by the ascent you should deffo check out Ruiner it’s similar but much better
Totally agree....The Ascent looked fantastic but was very poorly designed.
What made me upset about deathloop was all the awards it won in the game awards and psychonauts 2 didn’t win a damn thing and it’s deserves so much more attention :(
the last few years especially, the people in charge of the game awards pick one popular game and give it as many awards as they feel they can get away with before people catch on. it's mostly rigged and you shouldn't take it seriously.
@@StygianIkazuchi The game awards has a jury of over 100 outlets from all around the world who vote independently. Just because you'd rather more niche but equally praiseworthy games win doesn't mean it's rigged.

id like it if farcry went back to the super soldier syrum idea and did some crazy powers it gives them more room to work in and i honestly dont know why they left it. they could make a choice and consequence system where the ending changes based on how mutated you become losing your humanity to the side effects of the syrum for example.

good takes but far cry 6 is not the first game they send out emails for with how long u played
If you compare the open world gameplay of Far Cry 6 and Halo Infinite, the design is very similar if you ignore story, characters, style etc. Checkpoints, FOBs, outposts are interchangeable. The biggest difference is that Far Cry 6’s world is unnecessarily large, to the point that it takes way too long getting to the next point of interest. In Infinite even on foot it’ll likely take you less than a couple of minutes to get from 1 FOB to something else, where as in FC6 it can easily take 10+ mins. And to make matters worse for FC6, Infinite’s gameplay is way more fun. In my opinion 343 showed Ubisoft how to do it right.
Deathloop is disapointing for the same reason Cyberpunk 2077 was; hype and previous record of the studio. There is a lot of things to like in Deathloop. But at the end, you wonder how much better it could have been.

I wanted to love the medium. I absolutely love silent hill 2 it’s one of my favorite games of all time but I couldn’t like it. I didn’t think it was as bad but it brought me pain realizing that it might not ever be possible to get another experience like I had with SH2.
Ascent was my first top down shooter and I was so excited for the first few hours… and then I couldn’t even play the game without it crashing. Couldn’t even get to the flaws of the game
I pretty much agree with most of what you had to say but not regarding The Ascent. That game was easily one of my top favourite indie games of 2021.
Deathloop sounded like a cool concept if it weren’t already done before. Once I saw gameplay and the basic gist of it before launch, I was easily on the “Nah” list. Arkane has some interesting stuff, none of them really ever grabbed me…but this looked IMO underdeveloped creatively and/or rushed for “reasons”.
Kind of feel bad for PlayStation players since this is likely their last BethSoft title they’ll get.
I haven’t played any of these games except far cry 6. And honestly I love super grindy open world games it’s why I really like the Ubisoft formula. It’s just something I can sit down and drool on myself for days and days.
Kudos for a very brave list. Well argumented, too. Haven’t played Ascent and Deathloop and I hope I will enjoy them, but I really respect how honest this list is.
My man's with the Dragon Ball FighterZ collector's edition statue. That was my last collector's edition as I've gone completely digital and it's bloody awesome.
I love Far Cry 6. It’s my favorite of the whole series. It’s just a blast to play. It would easily make my top 10 for the year.
