Sanatan word, I fist heard was in a DD TV series, Bharat ek Khoj, in one episode in which, Pallavi Joshi ji, your wife was also playing a character, and for viewers I may tell, Bharat ek Khoj was written by non other than Shree Shree Nehru ji, directed by Shyam Benegal, and telecast in 1988. And book Discovery of India was written in 1946.

धर्म की परिभाषा क्या है?
धर्म का अर्थ होता है, धारण, यानी जिसे धारण किया जा सके. गुणों को जो प्रदर्शित करे वह धर्म है. धर्म को गुण भी कहा जा सकता हैं. शायद ही ऐसे कुछ ही लोग होगें जो धर्म के बारे में जानते होगें. धर्म एक संस्कृत भाषा का शब्द है जो धारण करने वाले धृ धातू से बना है.
“धार्यते इति धर्म:” इसका मतलब है जो धारण करते है वहीं धर्म कहलाता है अथवा लोक और परलोक के सुखों की सिद्धि के लिए सार्वजनिक पवित्र गुणों व कर्मो को धारण करना ही धर्म माना गया है. दूसरे शब्दों में यह भी कहा जा सकता हैं कि मनुष्य के जीवन को ऊँचा व पवित्र बनाने वाली ज्ञानानुकुल जो शुद्ध सार्वजनिक मर्यादा पद्धति हैं. जिसे धर्म कहा गया है.
जैमिनी मुनि के मीमांसा दर्शन के दूसरे सूत्र को भी धर्म का लक्षण कहा जाता है. बता दें कि मीमांसा दर्शन हिन्दुओं के छः दर्शनों में से एक है. इस शास्त्र का ‘पूर्वमीमांसा’ व वेदान्त का ‘उत्तरमीमांसा’ भी कहते है. लोक परलोक के सुखों को भी एक तरीके से धर्म का लक्षण कहा जाता है.
कहा जाता है कि वैदिक साहित्य भारतीय संस्कृति के प्राचीनतम स्वरूप पर प्रकाश डालने वाला विश्व का प्राचीनतम् साहित्य है. वैदिक साहित्य में धर्म वस्तु के स्वाभाविक गुणों और कर्तव्यों के अर्थो में भी आया हैं. जैसे जलाना और प्रकाश देना अग्नि का धर्म हैं. और प्रजा का पालन और रक्षा करना राजा का धर्म होता हैं.

Look Mr Vivek Agnihotri , You are not the only who is following santan dharma . I am also researching on mahabharata to write in a way of kaliyuga to remove caste system . Sanatan dharmi means who is following truth on moment to moment basis . I just want to erase this caste system for my upcoming kids and future generation . So I want amendment in constitution to use sanantan in our sirname and remove this foolish caste but you are dividing into small fragments again . Could we be born brahmins ?? We should come together and remove caste system and different sirname and should use sanatan as sirname and transform hinduism in sanatan(culture of universal beings) . सनातन का अर्थ है जो शाश्वत हो, सदा के लिए सत्य हो। जिन बातों का शाश्वत महत्व हो वही सनातन कही गई है। जैसे सत्य सनातन है। ईश्वर ही सत्य है, आत्मा ही सत्य है, मोक्ष ही सत्य है और इस सत्य के मार्ग को बताने वाला धर्म ही सनातन धर्म भी सत्य है। वह सत्य जो अनादि काल से चला आ रहा है और जिसका कभी भी अंत नहीं होगा वह ही सनातन या शाश्वत है। जिनका न प्रारंभ है और जिनका न अंत है उस सत्य को ही सनातन कहते हैं। यही सनातन धर्म का सत्य है।
वैदिक या हिंदू धर्म को इसलिए सनातन धर्म कहा जाता है, क्योंकि यही एकमात्र धर्म है जो ईश्वर, आत्मा और मोक्ष को तत्व और ध्यान से जानने का मार्ग बताता है। मोक्ष का कांसेप्ट इसी धर्म की देन है। एकनिष्ठता, ध्यान, मौन और तप सहित यम-नियम के अभ्यास और जागरण का मोक्ष मार्ग है अन्य कोई मोक्ष का मार्ग नहीं है। मोक्ष से ही आत्मज्ञान और ईश्वर का ज्ञान होता है। यही सनातन धर्म का सत्य है।
