  • Did You Know: The McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System provides year-round navigation from the Mississippi River in southeast Arkansas, westward to Catoosa, Oklahoma, near Tulsa. The 445-mile system links ports in Arkansas and Oklahoma with the ports of the world. The locks and dams were built to keep the water deep enough for barges during low flows.

When you consider that barge-haulers' main competitor, the railroads, have to build, maintain, and pay taxes on their infrastructure, it's fair to ask how the financing of this system is allocated to the operators, or is it just massive pork-barrel politics as usual. We need some transparency, like knowing whose hands are in whose pockets. Even truckers have to pay tolls and usage fees, even if they get off easy, given the damage they do to roads.

The roads would never had been built if it wasn't needed for freight
