Just did a variation of this method on the tank of a 1988 Honda VT1100C Shadow I found stored in a garage with only 9,147 miles on it. I cleaned the tank of oil/gas/lacquer using Dawn dishwashing liquid and water first, then added the BBs and shook, and shook, and shook, and...well, you get the picture. The inside looked very nice afterwards, like a freshly bead-blasted surface. I have now filled the tank with Apple Cider Vinegar and plan to let it sit for a week or so, then rinse and shake with the BBs that remain before removing them, rinsing and drying the tank, replacing the fuel pump , going through the carbs, then giving it a go. Thanks for the vid and wish me luck, it's a beautiful bike and I have high hopes for it!
Update: Well i failed to take a before photo, but it was every bit as rusty as this one: encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRrCvCxTF8x8BnBvgIdVeV6UXdTLYAbrJ63eyJPo_PQz1WjfVwVGw ...and here is the finished product. I let it sit for one week with the vinegar in it, and had cleaned with soapy water and shook BBs like the video: imgur.com/gallery/g05v1 Thanks for posting this, saved me a TON of money!
@@OFTooQuick if you have rust-through holes in the tank, it's gone, and rust cleaning it is probably just going to make more holes. Now if the holes are from it being punctured you may be okay.
Put iron nails and clean water in side tank and shake together for 15 minutes and make again...you will watch black fluid dirty from the tank. So pour the mixture in the white dish big perfectly & let it dry by the hot blower
I always thought distilled water was no longer pure if it comes in contact with metal? that's why it is always stored in plastic or in older days, glass demijohns? So using it in a metal tank is no real advantage?
How did u get it all out? I just cleaned out my honda shadow tank and I can't get all of the liquid out of the tank, used the works 1 to 1 mix let it sit dumped and flushed flushed. Clear liquid out. But still water in the tank I can't get out
The honda fuel tank is designed to keep fuel from splashing, or spilling too much if it falls over while the tank is open. I have a CBR600f3, I dont use hydrochloric acid, so id flush the crap out of it if i were you and put in some sort of seal if not an old one, drain the remainder through closing the cap, tipping the tank completely upside down, and siphon from the tube that goes directly to your evac canister, aka the cap drain.
I had to roll my tank (Kaw VN 2000) for about 10 minutes just to get the gas out of it. I don’t think I could get all that other stuff out. Also I would verify what went in, actually came out. Something would wedge somewhere.
My Mind would never be satisfied that all that tiny shit you put in there came back out, and that stuff can easily damage the fuel pickup tubes and screens that are on most pickup tubes inside the Tank. Your Bike may not have screens due to its age. I cut 3-4 pieces of Motorcycle Chain, about 4 links and drop those in the Tank. Then I can be sure everything I put in came back out.
I wouldn't coat it. Just fill with gas and make sure you're running fuel filters. Really a good step would be to fill the whole tank with white vinegar after you have done this pre-sanding step and let it sit for a couple days. Then do a final rinse and dry. Reassemble and use filters.
When the wife isn’t home. Wrap the tank in some old towels and throw it in the dryer on low. That tumble will save your arms and clean er up real nice.

I am doing the same thing with vinegar, You did a good job!Cheers
Wanna help me with mine? Same bike 88 vt1100. I have to see if I can jb weld some of the holes but I can't even get the cap off. 😢

BTW, it's 6-1/2 years later, I'm still riding my '88 Shadow, and the tank is still spotless without having cleaned it again! Cheers everyone!
3:21 I thought the tank popped! Lol
I thought the exact same thing! Hahaha
Same here I jumped!
Me too ...
Wtf, me too haha
I thought it was just me😂 I jumped a lil lol
Great video. Very informative. Thanks. You might try a small length of chain instead of screws and BB’s. Much easier to get out.
Proof to friends I'm not the only one who dances around when cleaning things! LOL
Fixing my tank that way will create work for my chiropractor 😂😂

use 1/4'' nuts.big stuff could cause small dents when you shake the tank.also, have a small magnet handy.
3:22 I thought it blew up like a bomb , hahahahah
😂😂😂😂

what kind of liquid in the 2 bottles with pink stamps did you use ?
I have exactly the same problem on my 1983 gs 550e. apart from removing the petcock did you remove the fuel level assembly?
Great video. Good idea with the magnet.

Get some mystery oil
Cool old Suzuki, I had a 77 GS550T that I loved until I got hit by a 77 Impala in 1989! Sweet dogs.

Yeah always count the BBS you but in
If you flush the tank without removing the fuel pump will you damage the fuel pump?
Dont take any chances and take the time to remove it, I would say...
You could use a telescoping magnet to catch the B.B.'s and get them all out.

Is there any alternative without putting shit in the gas tank ?
Did this method work? Any carb problems since? Did you coat the tank inside lightly with oil before using?

How do you dry the fuel thank, at the end, before to put new fuel ? Thank you !
Hair dryer, heat gun.

Can I use vinegar instead of water?
I think that's better than water, I personally wouldn't use water at all.
Any update on this, did the bike work out okay once you got it together?
No
Do you remove the petcock?
thats awesome!
