- In this video I talked about the importance of getting proper Mobility training. I also talked about my White Cane and certain tips I own for it and my Identification Cane as well. I also add a bonus story about awareness. Please watch to the end as there was Vital Information I almost forgot to mention.
Hello Vinny, I must honestly say this is the best white cane video I have seen on UA-cam. Don’t forget, I have been a case manager in a residential technical school, for the blind, I also have been a rehabilitation counselor for the blind, in Alabama, I have worked professionally with mobility instructors and rehabilitation teachers and for you to put out this type of informational video, just amazes me. You have packed so much information into a reasonable length of time, not only including technical aspects of this simple tool, but the reasons and rationale as to why you have selected, what you have selected. You also use great examples and you do it all off script and in a very understandable way. Do you do any public speaking? You could you are so relatable. There are many groups, in my area, such as the Lions Club, Kawana‘s, rotary and numerous churches who host topics each month for their senior parishioners. Just some ideas because what you say, and how you say it, comes across so well exclamation outstanding video!

I have done public speaking when I was really young about 18 years old about education in New Hampshire. I was even on TV Public Access Channel. I do not do too good in front of a lot of people though.
I am still a newbie when it comes to the visually impaired world so I have a whole lot to learn still. So maybe down the road I will try to do speeches or talks

You deserve to be on cloud nine! I think that part of my amazement with this video is the very fact that you are, so, new to visual impairment, yet, you are so articulate and positive!. If I got up and did a very similar video, most observers, I think, would respond, well, she has been doing this a blind thing for a long, long time. But you have not. That fact is so in powering and would be very inspirational to others who are just now experiencing severe vision loss. Just my opinion! Awesome job Vinny!

You are right, embracing the cane is the way to go. Yes, it makes us stick out, but that is just the reality of life and it will be OK. I am so thankful for my cane skills, it has enabled me to travel independently across the country. I get on the Amtrak train and go from Kentucky to California by myself a few times a year. I love traveling, especially by train.
Have you ever thought about getting a guide dog. just imagine the guy on the train traveling with his soul companion is amazing man's best friend.
That would be like a true traveling train story. I didn't tell you also that my father wasn't official hobo.before he passed away he got certified by the hobo Queen. LOL true story I don't know if you heard about the hobo organization. But they are in love with trains.
Vincent Grasso My Visually Impaired Life I had thought about it at one time, but my thing is, I do not want to be on the schedule of a dog. I love animals very much and I have a dog on my farm and she does function as a guide dog a little bit. I am comfortable enough though, to travel without one. It also helps that I am a priest and I figured out that people see my priest collar before they see my cane, which is a good thing. When I was still studying to be a priest, I was afraid that my cane would prevent people from approaching me, but actually the opposite is true. People feel as though I am more approachable and not as judge mental, since I am a priest who happens to be blind.
Great video! I used to use a cane like yours, but due to having Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, I use a 67” NFB folding and straight cane.
Getting nearly stabbed in the gut by a white cane hitting a crack sucks beyond belief.
I’ve been a cane user for 8 years, and the more experienced I became, the longer my canes got.

A few years ago, the OM taught me to use the mobility cane. I would carry it to the airport and during Covid to medical practices. Mostly, I never used it. My peripheral vision is good, but my central vision is poor. I can walk fast but not recognizes you unless you were 5 feet from me (with good lighting I might miss the ruts in the pavement). I was not told about the ID cane or guide cane! I have decided that I am exhausted with explaining myself to others thus I think it is time for a new cane. Can you share some thoughts with ne? I am 5'4". My mobility cane is 50". I ordered a 46"gjuide cane but I think it is too long. I think a 30" would be too short. I think a counter is 38" high. I would like the folks in offices to see my cane. I would also like to walk at the park with the cane held in front of me, so I don't get run over by a bike. I don’t react well to people like that. I’ve had people assuming I’m completely blind (I’m close) do very rude things that they think I cannot see.
I call them out.

I live in Northern New England and we have a grocery store chain called Market Basket. Their prices are insanely good so it's always crazy crazy hectic there. Does not matter what day of the week you go.
So Many rude people whenever I go. I try not to go at all costs it actually gives me nasty anxiety. People bumping, rushing, and being so rude at times huffing and puffing. Even with my ID Kane have to say I'm sorry at least 50 times before we're finished grocery shopping. So when you say the fight is real I hear you on that one. Great, comment bye the way. I hope to hear more from you in the future.
Love this! I need to look into an ID cane! I already have a white cane that I LOVE IT. Even for having Stargardts Disease and being legally blind! Great video!
Good video man. I use a roller marshmallow tip and yes they do get caught here and there. The roller ball tip is heavier. My cane is graphite as well. The graphite canes do have a bit more give than the aluminum canes so they can bend a bit and still keep their shape. I’m almost done with my cane training and I’m now doing a few lessons blindfolded and boy does that drain you mentally but does it ever get you to use your other senses more efficiently.
Yes I think those who have enough trouble getting around should get training. At least in my opinion.
I have another round of training coming up again. I cannot wait as embarrassing as it was at times I'm so happy I learned it.
I have an occupational therapist coming to my house on the 22nd I am very curious to what she's going to teach me. I have learned to adapt at my house pretty well in the last year. So I'm curious as to what she will have in store for me
I am going to purchase another Cane. This time I'm going to try a thinner ambutech with more breaks in the shaft. I am curious how much of a difference it will be then I will make a follow-up video. Thanks for continuing to wash my videos. I will be binge watching yours as well.

I’ve decided to use a longer cane since I have no right side peripheral. I get a little self conscious though since I’m not fully blind, but still have a cane.
We need to go with what makes us comfortable. I never truly followed the length chart for white canes. I just found a 52 -in worked good for me.
I also heard, and past videos by other UA-camrs that the longer the cane the faster you can go. How true that is. I do not know.
And I'm glad despite your discomfort you still use your white cane. The only thing that matters in the end is how we feel and not what others think. Thanks for the comment.

I am visual impair but my parents taught me how to move as a person that can see.

You're welcome and I'm very happy that you're deciding to use the white cane. Believe me when I tell you this, it's going to get to the point where if you leave the house without it you will feel naked. Lol
It's going to be just the same as if you forgot your phone. You're also once you get good at using it or going to wonder why you never had it before. But there will be times that you'll leave it in the car or at the house. Depending on your surroundings you might just find that you do not need it. Although I use it 99.5% of the time. There are those times where I just leave it in the car. Just like you I rely on what little site I have left and try to be as normal visually as I was before my visual impairment.
For example, I noticed that if I go to a family member's home like my mother-in-law and father-in-law's house attend to not use the cane even though they have acres of land. I've been around those surroundings so frequently and often that I try to use that time to be like I was before visual impairment. Although, stores like Walmart or grocery stores no matter how many times I've been in there I will never go without my cane. Never know what's going to be new to your surroundings.

When it comes to your products and magnifiers Apple products work perfectly fine. Although, I am used mainly Android products and I own a Google Pixel 3 XL phone. This phone is my lifeline to everything accessible. I like my Apple products as well but to write comments is much better on my Google. Speech to text messes up a lot on my iPhone 8 in my iPad 7. My Google gets it right 99% of the time. Gboard is amazing!
I hope you have a safe trip back to America and my family is also from Italy. But to be exact, I still have family that lives in Syracuse Sicily. I have been to Italy and I loved it so much. I'm very religious at heart and the beauty there screams holy holy.
Something you would think is funny, my mother was born and raised here in America my father as well but my grandparents were not they were from Italy and abroad. I'm American through and through. But definitely proud of my Italian Sicilian heritage. Although, I never grew up speaking Italian but I did grow up hearing and speaking quite a bit of Greek. Lol
It confuses everybody I know because they always think I'm Greek when I'm actually Italian American.
And when it comes to trying to send me things do not even bother. Just chatting with you and making a new friend is more than enough. Always a pleasure to meet another good soul.
In my city I can not get a mobility training because I'm only 45% blind idid got a can fo free I used when I go out so much freedom I do not like depending on someone for walking thanks for tips I do need to get new one I like your vidio thanks
Well that is ridiculous! Your association for the blind near you should help you regardless. Vision loss is vision loss.
I know people that still have quite a lot of good usable vision and have guide dogs. I don't have one cuz I choose not to.
Still, use a white cane on your own terms in your own time. Research and get a lot of info on UA-cam and good old Google!. The information is out there for all of us.
There are many times I can get by without my white cane however I choose not to and I always take it everywhere with me no matter what!.

Shaking my head at how some peoples' kids (and grandparents!) behave at WalMart. I bet if you got a face or neck tattoo, people would be less likely to give your family sass like that. You should think about it -- you could probably find a coupon for it if you're lucky!
It's so funny you said that because I swear to you this is the truth. After the lady yelled at us my wife told me she had a tattoo on her face. LOL
That and she had a raspy cigarette smoker voice. Lol no joke.

Thanks for this video. It was so helpful. I'm thinking about getting an ID cane and was quite hesitant to get one because oh how awkward I thought it might be to hold and carry. I'm over bumping into things on my blind side (blind in my right eye) or don't realise people are there like how you explained it. So hoping it might be helpful for those situations.
I know exactly where you're coming from. Before my left eye decided to become part of the visual impairment family my right eye was pretty far gone. Never forget one evening when I was at work someone asked me to fix a certain part for them. So I went over to the bench to grab something and because of my right eye not being able to see anything I put a vise right into my rib cage. Old man did that hurt!
Also, I do notice that I'm always knocking over kids at a grocery store or Walmart. On my right side because my right eye is so much far worse than my left. Lol
Lastly, I'd like to say I'm glad that you're considering getting an ID cane. It is going to be such a benefit to you. I used to worry about what other people were thinking but of course get over that quick once I realized how much easier my life was using that ID cane. But I'll be honest I don't use them anymore at all. I ended up buying a slimline ambutek cane which of course you know I talk about and I find that to be perfect enough for me all the time. It's thin like an ID cane but it has a roller tip so that it doesn't get caught to any cracks or obstacles in front of me. And the coolest thing is what I'm outside or in places I've never been yes, I have to swing the cane left and right just like everybody else however when I'm in a place I know like Walmart or the grocery store I am very familiar with my surroundings especially still having a good amount of peripheral vision left. I don't worry all too much about walking into walls however, it allows me to be able to leave the cane in front of me and just guided straight instead of swinging left to right like a madman. Lol
I also found out that really short ID canes tend to be not as useful as a long ID cane. The one I carried originally was only 3 ft long. The one I carry now is 52 in long. And I am 5'7. I must add I am 5'7 and 1/2. Lol don't want to sell myself short. Haha corny joke.
But all the luck to you I hope you learn to like if not love the ID cane. I promise you will get over the thought of people looking at you. Most of the time people understand what the deal is anyway. Hope to hear comments from you again down the road.
I was glad to see in this comment that you recommend the longer ID cane. I got my first one, 46 inch long, this month. I'm 5'4" and at first thought I shouldn't have gotten it so long. Now I understand that was a good choice. Mine also came from Maxi-Aid but I went through Amazon as currently shipping was a little less (don't offer Prime) than on their website.

I've been legally blind 20/200 for over a year and I'm still waiting to get my training. I have a couple of white canes that I try to use when I go out but since I don't have the training it can be more trouble than it's worth.
Well till you get your training I suggest you just be very precautious and do the best you can. That's what I did. I started out with regular walking sticks, made from a stick of wood. Lol.
However, after my training I did realize there is a lot of difference between what I was doing and what I learned. But I adapted even though I was still stuck to my old ways in a little bit. Eventually you'll have that training and you'll be able to feel every single crack bump or even pebbles on the ground. I'm glad to hear that you're going for the training though. Hi Vincent Great video. I did not use a cane for awhile embarrassed to use the cane .When my eyes got worse I began training I use the ling white cane with a ball at the end . I have a small, medium white cane . I got my canes for free at the council from the visual aid .I still don't like using my cane but I know I have to .
Just remember it's not only to protect yourself from obstacles. It's to protect others from you as well.
Often there are times where I don't feel like using it but I force myself to. My cane has saved my shins and knees more times than I can think. I'm grateful I own one. I'm even redoing cane training for a second time.

Don't be embarrassed. I was also at first. I Wanted nothing to do with the white cane
Because I still have my side and upper peripheral I was able to get around without walking in the walls etc where is during the day. But I would always trip on curbs, those stupid caution wet signs, and my own kids. Lol just like you I was sick of being vigilant.
My lower peripheral vision is just too blotchy too far gone.
I remember the first day my mobility specialist came to teach me. I couldn't stop feeling embarrassed as he had me walking around my neighborhood and I knew my neighbors were watching. Then he made me go to public places.
I was beyond embarrassed however I realized I was tripping much much less and I was making my way around like a champ. Got to the point my wife would stay in the car and I would go by myself into a store to grab something.
It's amazing how much freedom you can get back just from a white stick. Lol

All I know is I embraced the cane and it is only been positive. You we'll get over the embarrassment really quick. Especially if you buy a collapsible cane you can just fold it up and instances you don't want it out.

Thank you so much. My daughter is blind and my granddaughter is going blind. I'm their caretaker and I need some serious can advice.. The only cane my daughter has is the one she got from the commission for the blind which isn't foldable, and if I didn't know better I would say it's 12 feet long 😉. My whole family is terrified when she uses her cane and I hear comments like " Oh crap, Venus has got her cane. 🏃♀️RUNNNN", or "Incoming" as they dive headfirst into bushes to avoid the sharp staccato of cane blows to the head and gut😱 . My daughter is constantly knocking items off grocery store shelves, she has poked me in the eye, ear, and throat, and her cane actually went up some lady's skirt👩🦯 in Walmart, who yelped and whipped around on me like I was the one who did it. I'm desperate to get her a cane that telescopes or folds but there are so many choices. Any help would be so appreciated.
The advice I can give you is a couple options. I'm not a cane specialist so I can't suggest what size to give. But I am almost 5'8 just under and I use a 52-in white cane.
I know that the longer the cane the faster you can go. But it seems to me that it is verging on the dangerous side. Lol
My first cane I ever purchased was from a company in New York called Maxi aids, if you call them they can tell you judging from the height what size cane you should purchase. It's a great company. Little bit on the price your side though they charge shipping etc.
And other option is to call ambutek they make tons of different canes. One which is my favorite called the slimline which is 50% lighter than a full size white cane and it collapses. You can get it to collapse anywhere from four pieces all the way up to eight as far as I know. Small enough to fit in your purse. Or a pocket.
Because they're 50% lighter which you probably know from my video they are far less deadly to other people. However, they still hold up to quite a bit of abuse.
I don't know if she's doing the tap from side to side or swaying from left to right. I suggest she gets a rollerball tip or a marshmallow roller and sway from left to right much safer for everybody. If people see her coming with that then they will know to part like the Red Sea. Lol
Another thing I can say is my cane when I put it up against my body from the ground up it comes right to the middle of my breastplate. That seemed to work good for me. But again get a professional opinion.
One more thing, just so you know Maxi aids sells and butech canes that break down but they are the full size canes. Not sure if they sell the slimline but you could call and ask. And if you don't want to order over the phone they will send you a catalog in the mail after you call them. But I have never had a problem with the company always did good by me. I think my first cane cost me $40 plus shipping. And I still use it till this day has not broke on me yet in almost 4 years. And it collapses to 4 sections. Same one in the video.
Good luck, keep me posted on how things go. Also, don't hesitate to contact the association for the blind in your state or wherever it is you may live. There usually is one organization or another of some kind to help. Could get her some cane training. And if the little one is starting to lose vision even if it's going to be a while from now the earlier they start learning about the stuff the better. My cane instructor told me to utilize the vision I still have while I have it. Will benefit her in the end. But good news is she still so young and so much technology is coming out. Hopefully cures will come out soon for most of us. Keep being a good caretaker a good mother and a good grandmother. God bless we need more people like you in the world
Great video I have the same cane and same tip mine is 61 inches. It took me awhile to use my cane but I'm glad I finally decided to use it. I still haven't been able to to get mobility training. I'm figuring it out on my own and it's been tough.
I totally understand where you're coming from.
Believe It or Not There is actually a science to Mobility training. Just like in golf you need to correctly position your fingers on the club before a swing the same counts for walking with a white cane.
The first week I was trying to properly came I found my wrist killing me and me getting more tired from swinging my cane then me walking.
Also, positioning where are the cane and your foot placement ends makes a big difference as well.
Just make the phone call to the association in your state. It should be free at least for a few visits to get you rolling and going. Then you and your son can both go out for walks together.
If you do the training make sure you film it when you can so you can put it on your channel. I would love to see it and so many others would as well. Good luck my friend can't wait to see your next video.
@@myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 I've applied three times and called a few times for some reason my case keeps getting closed and no one can tell me why. My eye Dr has even gave me a referral and still nothing yet. I've been on disability for just over a year and have been applying ever since. If I do finally get it I will record it if they allow me to.
@@visuallyimpaired7931 it can be ridiculous how much they put you through the burner sometimes. I think it has to do with funds.
You should look into Facebook and look for groups in your area that are blind or visually impaired that go 4 hikes or walks all learning how to use the cane. There is usually groups like this in every state.
And if not you and your son can start one. But if I was you I would not stop putting the pressure on the association. Annoy them till you're blue in the face then they will give you what you ask for. LOL
61 inches is too long , to get the proper size cane you measure from the floor to your arm pit. I'm 6'1" and use a 52"
Good video man , I stumbled across this looking for how to properly use an ID cane. I always feel odd not moving it from side to side . I have CHM so I have clear central but no prephial left.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video always welcome to make a new friend on UA-cam. I still have quite a bit of my peripheral left so it does help at the end of the day. I still have very little lower peripheral though and I'm still always tripping over everything. Lol
Just remember it's all in your wrist so don't worry about going side to side just remember where your pointer finger is pointing at all directions always. It should be ahead of the foot that's about to go in front of you. So if you're stepping with your left foot your pointer finger should be pointed to the left before that foot. Don't worry about how wide you do it it'll be all muscle memory within time. I'm so used to using my white cane now that I don't even think about it anymore.
Hello there I am Sam I begin using a white cane about 2 years ago I've had o&m training when I was much younger however it wasn't focused too much around use of the white cane I got just a brief introduction to the white cane. I started off just with an ID cane it does work but yes some people don't really know that it's a cane for the visually impaired because of the way it looks. So I did have a problem with motorists at intersections not knowing if it was actually a cane for the blind or something else. I still use it in some areas however I switched to a full Mobility cane and made that my primary cane I am not completely blind I do have some usable Vision however I don't have very much peripheral by visual field is very narrow and I am completely blind in my right eye and a little more than half in the left eye. My depth perception is not all that great so this is the reason why I felt that I needed to use a white cane put some light mobility and identification. Great video thanks for sharing. Oh by the way I mentioned that I have not had o&m training for the cane however if I feel that I really need o&m focusing around Cain travel I will do it in the future however my vision is still quite usable so I don't have to fully depend on paying all that much.
Maxi AIDS is awesome I ordered from them all the time I've ordered other assistive devices to help me such as magnifiers large print materials I really like Maxi AIDS.

just like you I still have some usable vision. However I have almost no lower peripheral vision as mine is very blotchy due to the filter I see before my eyes each and every day. I tend to trip and hurt myself quite often not seeing holes, divots and rocks etc. And I've said a million times and I'll say it again I absolutely hate those 3 ft tall yellow cushion signs they put in the supermarkets. They get me each and every time. Lol
I still use my cane everywhere I go however there are times when I go without it. My white cane is more like a comfort blanket for me now. I don't have to try so hard to notice all my surroundings. One of the best tools I ever got OM training for. So I highly recommend you do the OM training from time to time. keep refreshing yourself over the years cuz there are a lot of things to know about when it comes to white cane training. Lot of helpful things to make your life much easier.
Also, just like you I have multiple different types of canes in fact I should have added in my video at the time of filming my original first cane which was just a good old-fashioned polished stick from the woods. But it was my first attempt at learning the cane. Never had the heart to throw it out. I'm glad you're watching the videos and hope you keep listening and have a blessed, blessed week.
I just started O&M training. Im gonna get that same cane you have but in 6 sections. :) Im honestly not looking forward to walking around blind folded in the supermarket though lol oh boy. I wll ask my instructor if that will be part of our lessons.
If you still have some usable vision there's a good chance your trainer might just do that. It helps you get a feel for your cane. Helps you feel your surroundings through your finger up through your arm and gives you a better feel of your environment around you. Even if your trainer does not do this I would recommend if you still have some usable vision left to close your eyes at random moments when you're in surroundings you are familiar with and just try to get a feel for the cane, the ground and the sounds around you.
Also, I have decided just to stick with the standard full size white cane as I was purchasing the slimline from ambutek. But I realized that the slimline designs tend to break far easier. And not from necessarily wear and tear from opening and closing the sections. So figured I'd throw that out there since this video for you my friend. but no matter what kind of cane you get enjoy it and make sure to learn to love it. I take mine everywhere. I leave one in my car so when my wife and I go out to the stores it's ready for me and I always leave one right by my back door my house.

Thanks for the kind words. :) I do have a bit of cane phobia and honestly its hard to imagine myself using a cane in my everyday life. How did you get over the embarrassment and negative feelings related to using a white cane?
@@ramblingmillennial1560 Hi!!! I’m like you as in I have a lot of useable visual vision. I am nightblind and I have ambliopiya. How did O&M instruction go? I told my twin sister I wanted to purchase and ID cane and got backlash. I thought she would support me but because I’m not completely blind she invalidated me. I am also autistic and have a few other issues and have a fear of being out by myself . Your feedback would be helpful.
@@flowerbunlove6182 Hi! Im sorry to hear about how your sister responded. My mother also did not like that I started using a cane for the same reeason. It is important that we explain to people that canes are not just for people who are fully blind. If you are someone who has any difficulty getting around alone you should get a cane no matter what anyone says. And if you want people to know you are visually impaired without having to explain yourself an ID cane is a good idea. So onto your question. O&M has been great. I believe I started in late jan or early feb of this year and I just started back up again last week. I had to stop for a few months because my instructor also is a professor at a local university. The last lesson before the break was about crossing streets with traffic lights. We will also be covering public transit and other things later. The hardest part is really getting yourself to use the cane whenever youre out and no being embarrassed. I still have to get used to it. You said you are afraid of being out alone. If its because of your eyesight you should consider getting O8M training too. :)

I was born extremely short sighted but I've now been registered blind as my sights going I only just see out my left eye. Think of a white cane as an extension of you, to help u keep independen.
What other devices do you use. I don’t use a cane but I have an I.d cane. I use glasses and a monocular.
When I leave my home I do not wear glasses as they do not help me at all. But I use my white cane and my or cam camera, also I use my phone if needed for 90% of everything. Lol
At home I use my phone of course, also, I own a CCTV that was donated to me by my low vision specialist. It's old but it's in color and it helps a little bit. I am able to read the mail and know where it's coming from. my vision however is not good enough to be able to read full paragraphs without having tremendous eye strain. But I use my phone to read documents.
I used to take an identification cane with me everywhere. however, I purchased a slimline ambutek cane which is basically the same size of my ID cane with a rollerball tip. It's really lightweight can't even tell it's a white cane. But works flawlessly as a white cane and identification cane.

Why the red section? In my country red on a long cane signifies a level of deafness/hard of hearing. McIntyre Scotland
In America unfortunately, the truth is that people here are not as educated as people in Scotland, or the UK etc. I have often listened to videos from people across the pond and they have so much knowledge about the canes they use the colors, the size is etcetera. I have only been visually impaired for 3 years now and I have gotten a lot of knowledge from the association for the blind where I live. however, it is always just been a white cane with red at the bottom and usually a reflective red at that.
I am pretty sure but don't quote me 100%, but I am pretty sure that if you are blind and deaf the canes in America are usually white with red stripes from bottom to top.
In our country we also sell canes of all sorts of colors. If I wanted I could have an all black cane with green on the bottom. but, I stick to the white with the red at the end because that is the most commonly known here in the US. The average person sees my cane and just knows that I am visually impaired / blind. The education when it comes to white canes in this country needs a lot of work. That's my opinion but I'm pretty sure many other blind envisioning paired individuals in this country would agree with me.

@@myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 This is how I explain the "power" of the cane. First let me explain. I have RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa) Registered (Legally) Blind Dec 2000 at age 47. Until then I had been happily coping with life. I did the same stuff as anyone else just did it differently. Nobody told me. I took every mobility course known in the belief that knowledge is power and self-knowledge even more so, kind of "feel the fear" and you will adjust. The really big mental change came a few years later like a lightning bolt. People are the thing you can't control but they are not the "enemy". When you start with the cane the Visually impaired person is in fear of "bumping " into people but if you can project an image of skill and confidence in posture in cane use. move in a deliberate way that shows focus and direction people are then afraid to "bump" into you. 99% of people are lovely they will move. You can go wherever you please. I have travelled all over the UK and Europe , Boston in the US and the Carribean. Not a problem. Lastly if you have any residual vision - use it, enjoy it, the cane will protect you. And that's how my autonomy returned. McIntyre Scotland
What kind of low Vision do you have I have RP
Well I have technically the opposite of you. I have a little bit of outer peripheral upper vision, my lower peripheral is blotchy so kind of useless. My central vision is a nice sheet of gray wishy-washy/wax paper kind of deal. I see shapes and I can see most colors although beginning more color blind over the years. And I have what the doctors think is a condition called LHON lieber's hereditary optic neuropathy. I have optic nerve damage in a nutshell.
So here's an example for you, if you and I were to be talking face to face I could still look at you right in the face and hold a conversation, however I could not tell what you look like could not see your eyebrows your eyes nose etc. Just the shape of your head a little bit of the top left of your hair and I be lucky to even tell you if you have any designs on your clothing. But at least I could see you standing there and that makes me happy. Got to hold on to what we still have.
Oh yeah! One last thing if you were to stand 3 to 4 ft away from me you would disappear completely. You would be too far in the deep sheet of gray. I call it gray it's not technically gray but it's a filter of some kind. But the funny thing is if I'm in a car and I'm looking down the road outside the front windshield I can't see cars 5 ft ahead of me but I could still see mountains in the distance not clearly but there.
