  • The groove on this tune is so great. The simplicity of the drums and the complexity of Jamerson’s bass line meld together perfectly.

I wonder if it was indeed pistol on this tune and not Benny Benjamin?? It’s my understanding that pistol did mostly all the shuffle tunes and Benny did “ straight four on snare “ tunes like this one and was known for coming up with fills that were little “ hooks “ like in this tune. Either way great playing and great tuning of the drums. They sound right on the money. Great light touch as well. I’ve been to the Motown museum ( highly recommended) and the famed “ studio A “ and when you see the close quarters the musicians were cutting these tunes in - you realize they were not wearing headphones and everyone was playing not too loud. Especially the drummers. Long llive the funk brothers !!

It’s definitely possible that it was Benny. I read in a few different places that Pistol played on this one but who’s to say for certain. Thanks for watching!

Pistol was HDH's go to drummer, like the catch upd and fills identify the drummer, Pistol was the king on the snare on every beat, not just the 2/4 and also alternating the kick off the snare beat

Steady beat! Great work as always.
I know you must get inundated with requests.
But I'd love to see you do a few sly and the family stone covers. Greg Errico had some fantastic grooves.

@@vintagedrummer79 I'm sure you've seen this clip but that's some pretty solid drumming, exceptionally tight band.

    Hello mate,
I’m 16 and have been playing guitar for the last 7 years. Stones are by far my favourite band, my playlist for them is almost 200 songs long😅
Repetitive strain has become a problem for me and means I can’t play like I used to. Been wanting to drum for years and finally have the money to purchase a kit myself! Your playing is identical to what I would aspire my own to be like. What advice do you have in terms of practice etc. I have a basic level of skill at the moment from being around a few bands.
    Many thanks,
    Flynn🙌🏻

Hey there, thanks for reaching out! Nothing beats finding a good teacher to take lessons with. Outside of that, the most important thing you can do is use your ears and really listen and play along to recordings. That’s how I initially learned until I started studying with various teachers. I still learn a ton though just by listening and playing along to recordings.
