Yeah, this was total paranoia on the part of ignorant movie makers. I've been playing D&D for over 25 years now, and I'm perfectly fine. Why, I only need to use my Cloak of Invisibility a few times a week now that the Orcs of Grimlock mountain have been defeated. There is a prophecy that Orlag will come back from the grave, but he cannot until the red moon glows bright in the night sky. So let us drink and be merry, for we, few, brave heroes have defeated the army of darkness, and kept its shadow from darkening our souls.

+nychold believe it or not, the paranoia was real at the time. my grammar school refused to let us start a D and D club.
There were also a lot of urban legends about stuff like this happening...

MrWitchman1967 Oh, I lived through some of it. Lost my best friend because I asked him if he wanted to play D&D, and he said "that's the devil's game." The paranoia got so bad that, in 2e, they changed the names of devils and demons to Baatezu and Tanar'ri to try and calm people down.

I went to a Southern Baptist private school in the early 80's and believe me, people were FREAKING OUT about D&D. this one lady came to the school and told us she found out her son was playing D&D with his friends and stormed into his room and took all the books and through them into the fire place and "demon spirits" aka "smoke" came out of them and fled the house! Of course I knew she was full of shit. In high school we played D&D in my friends basement and his super religious step mother tore up his DM guide when we were at school and left a note saying she wished he would "Find God" and not bring "this filth" into her house. He was pretty pissed to say the least. Been playing on and off for 30 years and I am an athiest, haven't sacrificed anyone and obviously haven't killed myself. Its just ignorant paranoia. Not even sure why I'm defending it...its such a ridiculous thing.

Thanks to this made for TV trash, my parents forbade me from playing Dungeons & Dragons with my friends and thus they stunted my aptitude with math. I would be a better technician and would be making more money if I had been allowed more rewarding practice with numbers at an earlier age. D&D would have given me that.
