Some 'Hidden' Details in Hysteria (the song) by Def Leppard

  • I thought it would be fun to do another analysis style vid now that I've completed the main discography covers. My first 'hidden details' video was about a vocal layer in Women I suddenly began hearing one day. Since I've not had a similar experience with Hysteria, I thought it would be cool to look into the hidden details of the songs craft and why certain sections work etc. It was a lot of fun to do and quite challenging editing wise but I hope it's enjoyable and insightful to watch. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!! (probably best to watch with headphones) :)
    Other analysis videos:
    Some 'Hidden' Details in Women - • Some 'Hidden' Details ...
    String by String Recording Process - • String By String - A D...
    Recycling 'n' Remixing - • Recycling 'n' Remixing...
    I had uploaded this an hour ago but there seemed to be a glitch where the last few seconds flashed quite violently. I didn't want to cause any epileptic problems so I've re-uploaded which hopefully has solved the problem. :)

    Thanks for diving into this. I learned a bunch. It’s interesting to me how the guitar parts sound simple in isolation, but when they are played together it creates a real depth. One of my favorite bands.

    Honestly, I’m just grateful to see how Def Leppard are getting enough love to have such an analysis done on their work. It’s awesome that they are selling out arenas and playing their hits again. Cause let me tell ya, being a die-hard Def Leppard fan in the 90s was no picnic. I think the complexities in their compositions definitely set them in a separate league from a lot of their 80s counterparts. Great video, sir!

    Great analysis mate... the composition of the song is a lot more nuanced and complicated when its broken down... I love finding bits or parts of songs you’ve never noticed before - it can breathe new life in to old songs...

    Very AARRGGHH-SOME analysis mate! It's very comforting to know that there is another person out there that can see the incredible genius-level work of art that the song HYSTERIA is. I suspect that Mutt Lang was responsible for some of the deep nuances as well as steering the main progress of the song. I also have to think that somehow someone in the band (maybe Sav) was consciously or subconsciously influenced by the Boston song More than A Feeling. Althought The Rockman is used very sparingly on this tune, it seems quite a coincidence that this song is essentially the "More Than A Feeling" of the 1980s. Anyway, brilliant job and HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Cheers - Pirate Phil

    It's simple. What makes these songs special and unique and different is that you have a professional musician in the band who knew what to do with it to create such songs. Most average rock bands tend to have players who learned to play guitar by themselves and therefore have limited knowledge. When you study the art and science of music, you expand your knowledge and your creative talents can do more with it - aka STEVE CLARK.
    The other added element is the other professional musician in Robert John Mutt Lange, who would help to arrange all the pieces.
    That's the bottom line in the uniqueness of Def Leopard.

      It'd be a pretty short video if I just said that :P. I'm hoping to try and show where the musicianship shines in these songs and why they appeal to anyone. There's a lot of musicians who's music I don't find interesting, so what is it about Steve, Mutt and the bands work that I do find interesting? I think trying to find all the little similarities and differences in the music will offer some answers to that.

    I have struggled ALL my life with theory.
    I need to watch this another dozen times, and I'm only 3 minutes into the vid, however, you've already solidified some theory items that were previously confusing to me, plus you're using a song I love, and have worked out some simple parts to, just so I can jam with it.
    I look forward to digging into the rest of the vid and thanks for making theory tangible.
    Ben, Thanks again.

    I have to agree with you man. They have that extra something special in the notes and youve explained it to me that makes much more sense then how its all written. It has the melodic sense to it that just rings clear but its hard to pinpoint it. But Steve Clark and Phil Collin worked amazingly well together and they had that special notation that other bands just dont have and thats exactly why they are an amazing band. Thanks man!

  • @jovovichnik
    @jovovichnik 6 років тому +2

    Strangely enough, in recent months I have been asking myself what it is about this song that makes it my favourite (as in, all-time favourite in music per se).
    I have identified the bridge (composed by Phil) as the fulcrum of its brilliance for me. The bridge in isolation, however, makes no sense; you need to view the song as a whole and that theme-setting rhythm (composed by Sav) is the perfect primer for that bridge, whereas the verse (dripping with Steve's input) is the "flowery aftertaste that lingers on the tongue".
    In simpler words, "Sav's section" sets the balladic mood and pace, while the bridge prods some kind of emotional button in my heart that few other songs ever have done and none have consistently come close to.
    Now that's just me, a repressed romantic, so I'm surmising this is all a reflection of my personality and life trials back in my teenage years, so others will see nothing in what I have just written.
    As for the thought that went into this, I lean more toward the notion that it was done on a "sounds right" basis rather than on a forensic, scientific approach up until the point where Mutt Lange fine tuned the source material. Once he entered the fray, I see what I believe are "tells" of his handiwork pretty much all over it, i.e., those foreshadwoings you mentioned towards the end of your video.
    All in all, a fascinating deconstruction and an early prezzie for me - thank you and well done!

    • @bwm5150
      @bwm5150  6 років тому +2

      Cheers! Yes I think the fact that the verse, pre chorus and chorus were all written by different people helps give each part their own identity which makes it more interesting to listen to.

    Hi, I just found this video, what a great in depth analysis, this is my favourite Leppard song and one of my favourite all time songs, you really put some work into it, I wonder what the original rough outline of the song looked like before the band and Mutt Lang leppardized it, no wonder the album took so long, there are so many of little guitar flourishes in Leppard music. I hope they eventually put out a complete anthology Tab book to help working through their catalogue, well done mate 👍

    99% of my favorite parts in Rock music is the heavy pounding crunching elements. Buuut the solo in Hysteria just speaks to me. I can listen to it 100 times in a row and it still hits me. My theory is this track might have been a country ballad brought over by Mutt and reworked. The guitar solo sounds like it was written on a fiddle. Somehow it just works with the Def Leppard style. It's haunting bright and almost has the feeling of a Anthem with the opening notes.

    • @bwm5150

      Otha Bojangles Phil revealed in one of the 30th anniversary interviews that the solo was a Steve composition, even though they both played it together. He beautifully described the note choices as sounding like a ‘Japanese Garden’.

    • @Me37368
      @Me37368 4 роки тому

      Otha Bojangles apparently Phil first came up with what became the pre chorus and rick savage went over to Phil’s house and played for him his idea, which was the intro and main riff of hysteria and they combined ideas, and that was the start of hysteria

    They are not hidden they are throughout the Hysteria (and some Pyromania) albums and all contemporary music with many parts obviously not playable live. Most of the guitar artistry is Steve Clark's as he was a player with feeling, structure and at one with the guitar and song. The only band that sounds exactly same on album and live is Aerosmith. Raw and real.
