Girl!! My advice is to never trust your precious memories to digital only. I mentioned scanning them. I hope you don’t toss them afterwards. The internet/ electronics are not reliable. Scary how unreliable they are really. And I’m proud of u for tossing the stuff u know you’ve moved on from. I know all to well how hard it can be
@@reallifewithalia few years ago I saw an episode of The Wads in UA-cam and she was talking about Walmart photo (I believe) and how she had uploaded all of their pictures and had no hard copies and they deleted her album because she hadn't ordered prints in however long. After that I upload mine to Walmart photo, to two different email addresses, and same them in the computer. It makes me so nervous for the pictures to be gone forever
So helpful to see you process through your old hobbies. Getting rid of all my crafting supplies was painful but the relief I felt when it was done was immense. I've never missed it!
Art teacher here, and i always welcome craft supplies donations, often I get buckets if yarn, ribbon, random brushes, scrapbooking supplies and some other things. If I feel I cant use it, it gets donated to our after school program. It saves the art budget. I havent bought yarn or ribbon in 8 years
That was awesome. I am so glad that you blocked the voices of your fantasy and former selves and let those usable crafting supplies go to new homes. Your storage room is now so organized and functional. I am drawn to paper of all colors, but I have never been a crafter-just a collector. I have to stay out of Michael's and Hobby Lobby and JoAnn fabric because I will buy a bunch of stuff that I would never actually use LOL. Good job-I enjoyed watching.
I got 95% of the way through finishing a hand sewn quilt, and after 15 years of it sitting in my closet, I took it to a quilt shop and paid them to finish it. It was so worth it!
You did an awesome job Ali! I am so proud to see how you let go of your fantasy projects! We have a family that we know quite well that needed craft supplies for their girl scout troop. I gave them so much stuff already and have much more to do. The troop sends me photo's every week of the projects they make! I am going to go through a closet this afternoon to see what else I can find! Have an amazing day!
Tip: put all your photo negatives and cds/thumb drives of digital pics in your safe deposit box at the bank preferably in another town. Should your area get hit/flattened by tornadoes or your house burns you will be grateful that you have a back up of your photos. After every tragedy folks say they regret having lost photos the most. Nice video. ❤
First time viewer...so glad I found your blog. You did a great job in this store room - making decisions is hard. You do so many things like I always have - like using gallon storage bags for sorting and hanging things whenever possible. (Have to say I've never had to deal with ski equipment!!) Also, I have always had some sort of big shelf units in storage areas & used plastic bins. The "fantasy self" concept has helped me so much in clearing out crafts and clothes. I am much older than you so I am now into the "Swedish Death Cleaning" phase of decluttering....the idea that one's children should not have to go through one's "stuff". Presently I am trying get Christmas decorations down to a few basics and also decor items. Every week I have some bags to take to the thrift store. One thing I do that I haven't seen others do is use old file cabinets for storing colored papers & some smaller crafts items in hanging files folders. I also use many 3 ringed binders for things. I'll be catching up on you rother blogs from central Georgia. Blessings.
Thank you! I'm glad you found me, too! I have been wanting to try Swedish death cleaning. I've been thinking about trying it out for a while. I love your ideas as well. ❤
You're an inspiration to me 😊. I'm finally going through our home decluttering. I get stumped on certain things and I do appreciate learning the decision questions/process from other's like yourself. Thank you for being so honest and transparent. It helps me.
Your sleeping bags and sleeping pads for camping and backpacking should be stored ideally flat and not packed or stuffed to increase their longevity. My solution has been to store them under the bed because they use so much space. Wonderful video, Ali! Your ski, outdoor gear, and craft organization was very satisfying. I have very similar hobbies and this was very helpful to see. I have also been trying to share photos with family and friends so I appreciate the recommendations!
You are an inspiration Ali!! Thanks for keeping it real. I enjoyed your fantasy talk and know how hard it is to let things go. Got a good laugh seeing your booth photos 😂. I’ve got those too and get super distracted looking at other photos!
It does feel weird! I digitized all of our photos and tossing the prints, particularly the ones of my kids when they were little, felt very wrong. But once they were gone, I got over it and enjoyed the freedom of not having the physical items. With everything digitized my kids can have full copies of all the family photos and everyone has less stuff. I can easily email or upload anything I ever need.
When I have hard times parting with things, especially crafts that I spent money on but don’t use - I donate items to specific shelters, like homeless shelter, ones for moms who struggle financially, kid centers, hospitals, old people homes, animal shelters etc. It gives items purpose and I know HOW MUCH those places appreciate help. When you donate to thrift stores it doesn’t feel the same way as you don’t know will anyone even be interested in it or will it get trashed. Who will get it.. someone will also financially benefit from it, basically there’s no emotional connection. With shelters you know it will benefit a community, you know which one and not feel guilty about “waste of money nor resources” anymore either! Also people underestimate how much different things shelters accept, even single use cutlery we get from deliveries can be useful to some, scraps of fabric big enough to be used as tissues or as a pillow stuffing for animals. Blankets with holes also usually accepted by animal shelters. So many things!
Thank you! That was probably the best thing I got rid of. But you’re right! I didn’t really add that in to my pile at the end. I also had a big bag of trash and a huge tent!
I went through my kitty furson's bedroom closet. Yes he has his own bedroom along with the roan of the whole home. I had for sale items in there. Alot of the items were new or fairly new. They haven't sold so they got donated. Out with the items and the guilt too.
After I digitalized my slides and photos before our big move (50 years in one house) I made a folder on my computer of the best 1000 and it is now a randomized screen saver on our TV. We get to see them daily.
I threw away boxes of negatives!!!!! If I have ever needed a copy of a photo I scan and print it. I wouldn’t even know where to get negatives printed anymore. ♥️
I recently got rid of a ton of my craft supplies. It was hard but I also just like buying craft supplies so if I get back into those things I’ll buy something new to use! In the meantime someone else can use them.
That ski rack is so satisfying! I used to ski as a young adult when I lived with my parents & our basement was very disorganized! My Dad used to move my skies around and I could never find them when I went skiing! 😞😬🙄
I have been struggling with getting rid of my painting supplies. I keep telling myself I'm going to paint again but I haven't yet. If I don't over the winter it goes bye bye in the Spring. I hate to think how much I spent on supplies and canvases.
Oh the struggles of craft supplies! Do people still old school scrapbook? I still have all my scrapbooks supplies. I have been avoiding this dept of my house.
That is smart! I only have a few negatives so I'm not sure it would make a huge difference. But I DEFINITELY need to get them scanned so I have a backup!
It’s better to keep negatives than photos!!! You can always turn negatives into new photos, if your photo rips apart, loses color, gets water damaged then it’s a goner. It’s a lot harder to ruin negatives. Also negatives can allow you to get different sizes in good quality, you can’t scan small printed photo and turn it bigger. So definitely keep negatives, scan printed photos and rather thow those out! You can also scan negatives with phone apps these days.
I end up using the buckets for something that I don’t want a lid for or the lid doesn’t fit. And then often that bucket breaks or wears out so it gets tossed.

I still have all the hard copy of photos. I won’t be getting rid of those even if I scan them. 😊 It was just the negatives I was questioning.

Art teachers would take all of that. Theater companies, dance companies, etc...
I donated them to a teacher!

Oh, yay! That makes me so happy. Good luck!

Yes! Great to see that fantasy self clutter go! ❤
It would be great to sell it all as a "business" for someone to take over. Ready to go with all the supplies!
I considered that years ago! It just didn’t work out.
Looks good. You have so many closets!
I am lucky to have a lot of closets! When we moved to this house, I knew I needed them! My old house had very few!

Keep the photos negatives. In case something happens to the original prints, (lost, fire, flooding etc)you can print them again.
I definitely considered that. Thanks for the suggestion!
