Do I even need an amp anymore? NUX MG-300

  • I recently brought in a little multi effect unit from NUX, and I am very impressed. Will I be selling off all my gear and just using the MG-300? No, but there's a good chance it (or its soon to be released big brother), will be coming with me the next time I have a gig somewhere I know I can't crank up my rig.
    As always, check with your local music store and see if they have the NUX MG-300 in stock. If they don't, please use the provided links as that will help the channel grow.

    Enjoyed your review a lot, thanks. It's not the run of the mill YT video and gets right to the point! I have to admit that I first tried the MG-30 and immediately fell in love with it. Its sound proves that a lot has happened in the past years since my beloved ZOOM G5 has been developed.
    I just had to try the highly acclaimed Hotone Ampero due to its touch display. My PCs typically have those, that's why I am not very fond of using Macs nowadays. But when it comes to audio gear, I just like to have knobs and buttons. Seems like I am not willing to entirely give up on that analog feel 😉
    Another important consideration is that I want to wire up the pedal board to the FX return of an amplifier. Today I hooked up both the Hotone Ampero and the NU>X MG-30/300 to my Orange Dark Terror's loop return and found that the Hotone produces a hell of a lot of noise and hum while the NU>Xs are very silent to this regard. A no-go IMHO.
    Now, did you already have a chance to get your hands on the MG-30? I' really appreciate to watch you talking about the new kid in the rig 👍
    Cheers
    -Manfred

    I just got the mg 300. Your review is accurate. The MG 30 will probably be more robust for gig use, but it’ll also be twice as much money.
    I can’t say I loved the factory preset tones, particularly the heavier/metal patches. But the computer interface is great so tweaking is easy.
    And I’m still trying to create a good thick EVH tone and an SRV tone. It’s in there I’m sure.
    I’m also hoping that a good library of patches for sharing or even purchase gets built up by people who know what they’re doing soon.
    I do wish it had an on off switch, and I’ve noticed that I often have to recalibrate the pedal when I turn it on.
    But other than that, it’s promising and I’m enjoying it. For the money the MG 300 pretty amazing.

    Thanks for this review. Like you I can't use a real amp at home, I'm think of using this with my existing pedal chain to use the amp & cab sims and switch in the some of the onboard effects as required as well. Could also use it as an interface too! Can't go wrong at this price?

    Glad i found your video here! A question from my side-
    I'm having my Katana 50 mk II about 2 years know and by all the different minds as well my own experience I have to admit that I'm not happy with it especially because I spend way to much time messing around in the ToneStudio for trying different setups and practice from there on.
    I thought about to resell the katana and get the NUX MG300 to just use that with my Studio headphones because i also live in a small paper thin apartment.
    it seems way easier to get along with the NUX to practice and try out different pre saved settings that this one has on board.
    Looks beginner friendly because you can see on the display examples of the amp mode you're in or the Effekt pedal that you're about to use and things like that.
    Wich also means you not necessarily need a laptop and all...
    If i still like to use the NUX through speakers is it right that i just need a small Cab and a power amp pedal?
    Would appreciate any answer
    Thank you, greets & Merry Christmas btw

      Thanks for watching. In my opinion the MG300 would be more of a crossgrade than an upgrade. The strength of the MG300 is that it has a few good sounding amp models rather than 100s of mediocre ones. This is also the strength of the Katana, though it has less amp options.
      But yes, all you would need to run the MG300 in the way you want would be to run the through an amp/cab and turn off the cab IR side of the MG.

    Are the foot switches on the unit only dedicated what they’re labeled as (Loop and Drum) or can they switch from clean patch to distortion? I’ve noticed no one ever talks about that in any video regarding this pedal.

    • @MaxSplVideos
      @MaxSplVideos  Рік тому

      The pedals can move you from one patch to another, so if you have a clean and a dirty patch next to each other it would work that way.

    Hello one Question . ..can i put it in tje fx loop only to add the onboard effects and does this pedal steals the treble(tone suck) when the effects are off?u

    • @MaxSplVideos
      @MaxSplVideos  3 роки тому

      I didn't really test it for that myself. If you are just looking for a multi effects unit for an effect loop I think there are better options out there (though most will be more expensive). The amp sims are top notch, but the effects are nothing special. If you are worried about loss of tone from the pedal, chances are they wont be to the caliber that you are looking for.

    • @MaxSplVideos

      I didn't test the feature myself, but it sounds like the group module section could work for what you are looking to do. Sounds like it lets you put four presets into a module, so you aren't cycling through the whole library.

    • @MaxSplVideos
      @MaxSplVideos  2 роки тому +1

      It really depends on the gig, but I would say yes. I think this and other inexpensive modelers are better than ever. I still prefer my amp and pedal board for most gigs but I have started using alternatives more and more for situations where bringing a full amp rig just isn't practical.
      Now, I already have an amp and pedal board so I have that option. If I had to pick between using this or using an amp that is the same price I would use an MG-300 every time.

      @@greatsaiyaman1992 As long as it is set up to run direct/headphone out you should be good to go. Some settings assume you are running through an amp and speaker, so they will sound horrid through headphones. I would recommend consulting the manual for these settings.

      I have a Valeton GP-100, and first trying it with the factory settings I almost sent it back to the dealer. Then I discovered and downloaded some custom settings and custom cabs and they sound real good and realistic. There's so many settings you can make terrible sounds as well as excellent sounds.
