Awesome guitar lesson! Vai's use of harmonics here is key. Beautiful song. As a fellow guitarist, I always loved the Roth/Vai/Sheehan band; very under-rated and Vai is amazing. Have to mention one point: You said "There isn't an ounce of Roth in this song." I know what you mean - The guitar is amazing, but Roth wrote the awesome lyrics with a great vocal. The guitar and the vocal together make this a classic song. Gave it a like and subscribed !
Outstanding lesson! You have a way to make people relax the moment you speak. Thank you for taking the time for us, very generous of you. May God continue to bless your heart Marcus. Are you from California, I'm from Huntington Beach.
I live in Indiantown, Florida. You just have this laid back, relaxed, friendly, no big ego thing that I remember from my youth in the '70's. Thanks again for the lesson, I'll practice.
Haha - yeah man, it's got 'Steve Vai' written all over it. This tune is particularly hard to sing and play at the same time. You've got to do it so slow to be able to work out where the vocal groove coincides with the guitar groove.
Thanks for taking the time to create and post this great lesson. Brad, my best friend of nealy 50 years just passed and this song was the first that came to mind when I thought of what to play at his memorial service. I hope I can get it down in time to do justice to the song and honor my friend and his family.
+Richard Maitri Thank you so much for the kind words and story of your friend. This song was introduced to me back when it came out by my brother. He recently passed away at the age of just 45 after fighting a long battle of drug and alcohol abuse. This song will always remind me of him and that's why I learned how to play it. His name was also Brad.... RIP to all the important people that have come and gone in our lives ;)

Great tutorial. I was JUST re-learning this after years last week. You cleared up the artificial harmonic lick perfect. I always just fudged it.
Thank You... glad you like it.
