She loves Japan & I think she would love Taiwan too. For her it's about safety, cleanliness, decent people and food that a vegan can enjoy. Great job Allen! I was born and raised in Taitung. I 100% love my beautiful hometown. I am now living in Auckland New Zealand, still from time to time I miss everything there in Taitung.
From my own experience, I can say: Yes, a foreigner can easily travel to Taitung and get along there speaking only 20 to 25 words of *Chinese*. Arriving by train from Kaohsiung, the big surprise to me was how bloody far the train station is from the actual city - about 6 kilometers. Once I got to the city, the manager and the staff at the hotel were very friendly and forthcoming. At eateries without an English menu, I always found someone helpful to get my order right (authentic TW breakfast included). My favourite bar simply was called "Beer", owned by an old Japanese lad who only serves Belgian beers. The best thing about Taitung is how absolutely laid back it is - leave your devices at home and charge your own battery when going there. I'm sure to return, but by bike. I did the East Rift Valley in 2016, cycling from Hualien by Ruishui and onwards to Taitung. The Highway 9 is very busy though - we rode our bicycles on the 193 and 197, way better.
What an amazing trip full of unexpected surprise!! So many wonderful things unknown to us are just right at some small corners of places in Taiwan. Simply great and beautiful!!

The rice in 池上 actually now is world famous cos it just won the number one ranking of Japan....it means the best in the world.(Japan have the most strict competition for rice.)
Hi , if you want to explore mountains next time, JiaMing Lake(嘉明湖） is a good choice. Guanshan（關山） is the start point . The lake has another name-“tears of an angle”, but be prepared it’s going to be take two days and the route is pretty long .
The most famous of Taitung is the orange daylily flower farm in Liushidan mountain during August. It is very beautiful and spectacular , and the orange daylily flower(soup or eazy-fried) is very very delicious . But it may be a bit hot for you in summer of Taitung.
Taichung(xx) Taitung is a really nice county. Slow pacing and fresh air. Thanks for introducing so many interesting places to us. Hope someday Pingtung government will invite you for making a film. In Taitung, you should visit Tsuben(知本)area which is located about 10 kilometers south away from downtown . A lot of hot springs, restaurants and shops can be found there. You can also wander in the main campus of National Taitung University or forest too. There is a corridor between Central mountain range and Coast Range extending for 160 kilometers from Hualian city to Taitung city. The corridor is called East Rift Valley and is about 5 kilometers wide in average. This area is dotted with villages of Hakka and indigenous people and boasts orchards, tea plantations, rice fields and ranch. Every July and August, indigenous Amai people take turns holding festival days and nights in about 100 communities and villages to celebrate their traditions throughout the summer. Their folk songs, dances, costumes and hunting attract lots of visitors to participate.

Last time I stayed in the valley for four nights and every day I got some biking in different town even in Taitung city. There are many bike rental for a reasonable price just around the bike trails. Some BnB also have extra bikes for their customers.

I can tell you are happy, I had been there once, loved it.

It makes sense why 金城武樹 is so famous. A must-go place around that paddy field, to immerse yourself into the uniqueness of TaiTung.
