Art’s voice…pure clean, so beautiful you weep. ❤tall guy. Paul Simon, short guy, musical, lyrical genius, poet, songwriter. The Boxer is my fave ❤❤ next should be the Hollies, He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother…..
Art Garfunkel sings his ass off on this iconic song and it never ceases to amaze me!! This song has withstood the test of time and this song is a part of my life!!
From the time this song came out I have never been able to listen to it without getting tears in my eyes. Such a powerful and moving song! Always been one of my favs.
My husband and I taught our girls to appreciate where music came from so they can see where it had come to when they were growing up. To this day, both girls, listen to songs from the 50's to current. Thanks for sharing this.
My mom, who wasn't religious at all, loved this song, because in her mind, the words describe how the Lord looks after His Children. That has always given me a lot of comfort. I'm not sure that's what Paul Simon had in mind when he wrote it, but I know it has touched a lot of people on a very deep level.
S&G are amazing. Art Garfunkels singing incredible angelic voice and Pauls writing genius and guitar and arranging. This song is iconic. All their songs are great! Two boys from Queens, NY!!! The piano player is from The Wrecking Crew…studio musicians that The Carpenters used too. They’re great! musician Larry Knechtel Session musician Larry Knechtel performs piano, with Joe Osborn playing bass guitar and Hal Blaine on drums. The song won five awards at the 13th Annual Grammy Awards in 1971, including Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. ❤❤
My husband and I took in a 17 year old girl when she was a senior in high school. She assumed after graduation she was on her own again. It took years for her to truly understand we considered her our daughter. Her senior year in college, she asked us to legally adopt her and we did so with pride and love. She is now finishing a PhD, has a loving partner, and rewarding job. Our Silver Girl's time has come to shine, but we're still sailing right behind.
This was one of my mom’s favorite songs. She passed this past February. Every day is tough without her but especially the first holiday without her. Music has always been emotional for me. Definitely brought tears to my eyes today. Love you Mom.❤️
A great song, could see why your mom liked it. Sorry for your loss. Glad you're there to cherish her memories. My mom passed in October and my brother in November. Going to be tough for both if us this holiday season. My prayers are with you and your dear mother. Peace from Northern Michigan.
I also connect this song with my mother. She had my back throughout my life and I always think of this song as a tribute to all those who were that bridge for the people they loved. My mom passed many years ago and the holidays are always bittersweet. Your Mom was obviously greatly loved.
Hi Jimmy! SO sorry for your loss! It will be 18 years next January since my mum passed! You NEVER stop missing them! Peace and Blessings to you and your family from Australia.
Glad you are doing the studio version of this song. I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel & had a lot of their records. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. You won't find a bad song. They have had so many hits such as "Sound Of Silence", "The Boxer", "Mrs. Robinson", "The 59th Street Bridge Song", "Homeward Bound", "Kathy's Song", "Scarborough Fair", "At The Zoo", "Cecilia", "America", "I Am A Rock", "El Condor Pasa" etc. Paul Simon went on to have a huge solo career with lots of great songs.
Art comes from a very musical family. His cousin, Lou, was one of the founders of both the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. He did go hard off the rails later in life, though.
Art Garfunkel was the singer on both the studio version and the live recording(s). Larry Knechtel played the piano part in the studio version. Larry was not only a member of the Wrecking Crew, but also a member of Bread (replacing Robb Royer in 1971), and he often played the "Bridge Over Troubled Water" opening during his introduction at Bread concerts.
This song has the same effect on you every time you hear it, even when you've heard it constantly for decades. Too beautiful for words. I'm so glad you listened to it. ✌❤
This was my late father's favorite song. A bit over 8 years ago my sister the ICU nurse called me late evening and told me he had suffered a massive stroke walking home from his volunteer gig at the local hospital and I needed to get there ASAP. Was on the first morning flight from East Coast to California. Docs had pronounced things hopeless and Sis who knows her stuff wasn't disagreeing. All 5 of his kids, their spouses, and 5 more grandkids were there. I was the last to arrive. I pulled up Bridge Over Troubled Waters on my phone, put it to his ear. He had been largely unresponsive but it seemed to me his breathing calmed and his heart rate settled some. We told him we are all there, that we loved him, but his work was done and he could join Mom now. He left us a few minutes later.
The song was the #1 song of 1971. I was a senior in high school. I remember not being surprised. It's always a pleasure seeing you experience great music, brother. "Sound Of Silence," "The Boxer," "Hazy Shade Of Winter," "Mrs. Robinson." Just a few other wonderful examples. 🤘😎❤
This and He Ain’t Heavy by the Hollies, nothing has ever come close to either classic. Pure genius, and Art’s voice takes this to a level of stunning beauty it makes you weep. This is such a universal experience of needing someone to walk alongside you during troubled times. Thank you, new sub ❤❤🎉🎉
The saddest thing about this song is how it destroyed their friendship for years. Paul Simon got really jealous because Art Garfunkel did such a good job singing this. It became so popular that it caused a major rift between them, and they wouldn't even speak to each other for years. Paul didn't like having the spotlight taken off of him. It just shows how jealousy can really destroy relationships.
I was 17 when this song was first released in the uk and it still gets to me every time I hear it. I used to think I might meet someone who would say something like that to me. Still waiting!
They played a free benefit concert in Central Park in 1981 to an estimated crowd of 500,000. The incredible Steve Gadd and Grady Tate handled percussion (Gadd was the drummer on several of Paul's albums. There's a remastered video of the 90 min concert on YT, well worth watching with your family.
Your reaction to this is as beautiful as the song!❤ I'm so glad I met you! I sang to this when I was a kid but didn’t analyze it. As you get older the lyrics hit home and differently during different trials and tribulations of your life.😢 S&G are a pure gift to the world!😊🫶 Thanks for sharing, Steven❤.
This is a stunningly beautiful song that always tugs at my emotions.....in a good way! A suggestion for the next S&G song: "THE BOXER" Another great reaction Steven. Thank you!
Every time I hear the studio audio of this I cry! It does, it hits different and stirs emotions that the live brings up but not like this. You can hear every harmony. Thanks for the reactions, much appreciated!
(Testing my old memory) I saw a documentary on The Wrecking Crew and I believe it was Hal Blaine said they got the reverb on the snare at the end by striking it into an empty elevator shaft. Thought you might be interested as a drummer. Thanks
There are a few "perfect" songs out there, and this is one of them. Everything is just perfection. This song also brings a tear to my eye. Not just for its beauty, its message - but also how far as a society we've come. And not in a good way. I was still in diapers when it was released, but I remember back in the day you knew all your neighbours, if you needed help, people were there for you. Even if you didn't need help, people were still there. People you didn't know, people you did. Much more of a sense of community. In the end, it's kind of bittersweet for me...but I will choose to let the beauty of the song win today. ❤
This studio version was a number 1 Billboard hit for several weeks in 1970 as I recall. It's the first time we heard this song. Paul Simon wrote it and it was then covered by many artists.
There is a phenomenal documentary called “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon” which came out last year - it covers his entire career, and has so much incredible music and footage it’s almost overwhelming.
If you get a chance, listen to the studio version of, "The Sounds of Silence." The message is so timely and Art's voice, as always, is superb. Thanks for bringing so much joy to your viewers. We need more of that. God bless.
There's a great video featuring most of those involved in making this song (on simongarfunkelvevo with 3.5M views) which will surely interest anyone involved in production, with lots of details, even Paul Simon singing slightly different words which might have been a first idea before it was finalised. I personally like the 'Sail on Silver Girl' part, as it refers to Paul's then wife who wasn't happy about her first grey hairs appearing.
You need to react to The Sound of Silence, the boxer, Scarborough Fair, Mrs Robinson and many many more songs if you did a live version and you didn't like it it may have been another singer such as Elvis Presley or somebody else
Stephen, I have been enjoying my deep dive into yours and your colleague's reviews of singers and musicians, both known and unknown to me. Thank you. This S&G studio album came out while I was at university. One of my flatmates played it so much that for two decades thereafter I couldn't abide hearing it. Looking back, I associate it with the post-high, residual euphoria after we returned to our studies after the excitements of the Chicago anti-war demos of 1968, the hazy love fest at Woodstock in 69, and the first episode of Monty Python. Ah, memories unlike anything my grandsons may expect to equal. ❤
This album (well "album" shows my age) is one of the best-selling of all time-and deservedly so. "Bridge" is heavily influenced by gospel and, listening to reactions of people who attend gospel services, it apparently gets played a lot at gospel meetings. The backing musicians are from the so-called "Wrecking Crew" (though they never called themselves that) who were the premier LA session musicians of that time. "Silver Girl" is Simon's wife, Peggy, whom he had met that year (and who was experiencing her first grey hairs). It reached number one on the British (where I was living at the time) charts, which was unusual for such a long song (4:55). Garfunkel's voice fits the song perfectly and the message of true friendship and support is timeless.
From the Live Rhymin album, by Paul Simon, Sounds Of Silence with the Jesse Dixon Singers -a gospel version of S&G song. The entire album is great-also features Uru Bamba-S&G songs w/Paul Simon venturing into world music which eventually led to his Graceland album which features African players and sound-that entire album is also great. Live Rhymin and Graceland-virtually any song off those albums (as well as the album you just sampled a song from)
One of the few advantages of being retirement age is that I can remember incredible music from when it was first released, and this song was on the radio constantly it seems in my memory, every shop you went into had it playing, and yes many of us hated it a bit at the time and thought it wasn't as good as either Deep Purple or The Supremes, depending on individual preferences. However the passing of time has made me appreciate just how good this duo were and how their music isn't really out of place in 2024, so I love watching younger generations experience the joy and pleasure as they discover my teenage years' music.

What's next? Perhaps Scarborough Fair/Canticle. But the whole "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is amazing.
One of the most beautiful songs ever.
Art Garfunkel has a voice of an angel. This song gives me goosebumps and makes my eyes tear up every time. So beautiful...

Art’s voice…pure clean, so beautiful you weep. ❤tall guy. Paul Simon, short guy, musical, lyrical genius, poet, songwriter. The Boxer is my fave ❤❤ next should be the Hollies, He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother…..
"The boxer" is my favorite too. As to "He aint heavy..." I prefer Bill Medley's version although I realize that Hollies' version is almost unanimous
Maybe the Most Beautiful Song ever Written
One of the best duos ever. The voice of Art Garfunkel and the writing of Paul Simon are a brilliant combination. Try "Kathy's Song" and "The Boxer".
Song of the year the year I was born. So glad this song has always existed for me. It is beyond powerful ❤
Art Garfunkel sings his ass off on this iconic song and it never ceases to amaze me!! This song has withstood the test of time and this song is a part of my life!!
Art Garfunkel has the voice of an angel
Trivia: Someone once asked Paul Simon why Art and he stayed together as a duo. He answered, "Have you ever heard him sing?"
A Masterpiece IS CORRECT!!! This is my favorite song of theirs by far. So glad you enjoyed it.
@@shawnzzz Absolutely amazing! Thanks for watching! 😁
"The Boxer" by Simon & Garfunkel should be next... you'll love the unique sounds and deep meaningful lyrics. Love the channel!
Let's not forget about the beautiful piano part played by Wrecking Crew member Larry Knechtel.
I get chills listening to him sing this. Simon and Garfunkel are legends. I grew old listening to them all these years.
Larry Knechtel is on the piano here; he was part of the Wrecking Crew studio musicians, then later, he joined Bread. :)
This has to be one of the greatest songs ever written and sang.
Great folk music duo. One of my favourite songs ever too. If you want to dip your toe into deeper folkie waters, let me know.
From the time this song came out I have never been able to listen to it without getting tears in my eyes. Such a powerful and moving song! Always been one of my favs.
These two... masterful poets, masterful musicians. There isn't a single song of theirs that I don't love.
The only version for me since it came out. I am 79 and always loved music with a message.
Simon & Garfunkel's Scarborough Fair is amazing too; I very highly recommend you check that one out too.
One of the greatest songs ever written.
Another song from them you should do is "Sound Of Silence"

This is Art Garfunkel singing
This song came out in 1970 and finished as the second most popular song of the decade behind Debby Boone's... You Light Up My Life.
When Paul Simon's musical poetry is combined with Art Garfunkel's voice, it yields perfection!

It's Art. In this he was 28 years old. If you did the Concert in Central Park, Art was about to turn 40 & his voice matured.
Art comes from a very musical family. His cousin, Lou, was one of the founders of both the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. He did go hard off the rails later in life, though.
Next up, "The Boxer". In that, drummer, Hal Blaine, uses a unique reverb drum part that was cutting edge.

Which is silly because Paul wanted him to sing it. Art didn't want to, but Paul insisted. From what I've read.
