    I'm in North Carolina, and when the night temps start to drop down, I'll turn off my solar-run fridge, and use a large cooler that I'll set outside overnight (inside during the day if it's too hot). I do buy ice when the days get warm, but it lasts a good week or more. When it stays below 50 during the day, but cold at night, I'll use the frozen soda or milk jug technique. It saves the solar for other things like drying hair or ironing clothes (or, lights!) It works perfect, and I don't mind stepping out into the cold in the morning to retrieve my cream for coffee! I love not paying an electric bill to run all the energy-hogging devices (fridge).

    Adding a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to your broth will help the minerals leach from the bones and your bones will soften while cooking them. Thanks for these vlogs

    Hi there. In the future, you could place the bones in a pillow case or some other type of bag, hammer the bones down to bits, and add them to your garden that way. This is a great way to add bone meal fertilizer to your garden without purchasing any.

    Please buy cloth grocery bags! I ve been using them for about 35 years now. If you buy the right kind they are strong and washable. You won t need separate bags for each vegetable or your grocery items. But either way - your vlog is so interesting! I stumbled upon it about a month ago and watch one every time I get a chance. Ever think about getting a vommercial-grade or heavy duty grinder? You can grind up bones, guts, etc, for chicken feed, dogs, etc. Set it aside exclusively for "NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION" purposes.
    You guys are handy. You could probably re-purpose a garbage disposal for this.

    We take all of our bones after making stock/broth and put them through our food blender - it makes a nice thick bone gravy that can be added to the dogs meals - you can hear the blender grinding all the bones to a fine mush

  • @sherrymuzykazekestravels6793

    If you guys could find a way to grind those bones up, they would be helpful in putting bone meal inside the holes that you dig to plant gardens. My in laws used to do this in Chicago although they bought bone meal in the store. Don’t know if it’s the same thing but it’s a thought!

    Can't wait to see what all you grow in your garden come spring and how it does. You mentioned previously you plan to keep bees. Have you had any luck finding someone that has hives in your area yet? And how many do you plan to have? As a bee keeper myself, I will be real curious how that goes for you.

    • @SimpleLivingAlaska
      @SimpleLivingAlaska  5 років тому

      Us too! I feel like in the 3 years we had a garden in Oregon we did pretty well thanks to the soil and we were planning to get hives but truthfully I have been scared to start due to the issues I have read and heard about. I have done a great deal of research on bees in the area and people do overwinter them, I will be placing an order soon (local apiary) but not quite sure yet for how many. I am SO open to any advice and recommendations, I have this concept of treatment free beekeeping although I care about the bees survival and am interested in breeding so trying to stay practical as well.

    Do you not worry about bears or other critters getting to the outdoor food. I was camping in Yosemite and a neighbor had a bear break into their car, tear up the back seat and get to the ice chest in the trunk. Then he used the car as a battering ram to open the ice chest. It wasn't pretty. Lol.

    Get a top load freezer with a temperature power activator. The following link is a video of Brad Lancaster in Arizona doing this. The link is to the time of it. But it would work good with a solar system as the chest freezer doesn't let the cold escape when opened.
