Inside Glasgow's underground after-hours party scene

- In the second of our Global Street Style documentaries, i-D crosses the border into Scotland to meet the young people carving out Glasgow's underground scene.
Discontent with the current political climate, they are artfully rebelling, reclaiming the city and throwing illegal after-hours parties. In this love letter to inner-city Scottish misfits, we discover more about the ripple effects of regeneration on Glaswegian youth culture.

This literally has no narrative. Is it about politics? Is it about parties? Is it about skateboarding? Is it about blowing up houses? Or is it just a heavily stylised video designed to portray an image of Glasgow that is so far out of kilter with what the underground scene is really about?
Laura Gregson nailed it
Laura Gregson Exactly. What an empty, pretentious load of bollox, like pretty much everything on ID.
I'm totally down with partying, having a sense of style, and doing something different from the mainstream, but all the pseudo political blah blah and posing is just ridiculous. Do they not get tired of themselves?
i think it was more about saying if you're gay, black and muslim you can still have a good time in Glasgow.
Laura Gregson It's about people wanting to have fun.
Punkrock Baby and yet everyone is taking themselves so seriously.
Load of bollocks. Theres nothing political about it. Its a place to go and get mwi and listen to good tunes not some post brexit political statement fs. And Glasgow has had after parties for over 20 years and the legit afters spots were not daft enough to allow this unnecessary publicity of what should be done "incognito"
David T. Pocock aye man it's so daft. To be fair on the arty troops they were under the impression that the video was going to be about young creatives in Glasgow and actually had a lot of their artwork edited out. People that have spoken to are not too happy about the way that it has been portrayed.
Exactly, just somewhere to go take your Gary's and get a bounce on.
If being full of eccies, jaw hingin and ravin yer pan in is now a political statement then Glasgows full of politically minded people
Big Miz 889
We can't really expect much better coverage from a Vice subsidiary, unfortunately...
Should maybe be titled "small gatherings of middle class students".
Yep
this really isn't an accurate portrayal of glasgow youth culture at all. very pretentious, wealthy students. glasgow is a great city because it isn't pretentious. it's an honest, forward thinking and liberal city, with a great youth outlook, but i couldn't watch this video without being irritated by some of the comments.
mongchilde great youth outlook? You must be fucking kiddiny
how do you know they are wealthy?
mongchilde well said mukka! Truth
2 right. Inaccurate
Listen to how they speak, its little things like that give them away
The one girl in the clothes store kind of gave it away. ''I want to look back on this in 5-years and say I tried it''. It's a phase. And more importantly, she knows this isn't the life she has to live. The true reflection of Glasgow would be the people living on estates, not some artsy fartsy student from out of town.
Good comment
Truely
I want to live like common people
Bang On!!
stop baiting your lives out if you're trying to keep something lowkey
Guy wants fame, rather than actually delivering something for everyone. Cause this will now die for the mainstream, take the recognition (from the people that matter, the people that go to your parties) not I-D.
WHIPLASH GOTTA GET PAYED 👊🏾
something felt wrong about those 4, they were trying to hard
Middle class students kidding on they're working class by having raves with other middle class students while they're wearing trackies and trying to act working class is literally the least anti establishment stance anyone has ever took ever. If they were actually anti establishment they would take action to help the most vulnerable people in society, not hold raves in empty warehouses.
Oh to be young and in college again...and think that dressing differently and spouting philosophy makes you so unique and capable of changing the world.
Watched 10 minutes and never heard one real Glaswegian accent
"glesga uni accent"
@Tobby Isiba you must live in the Highlands mate 😂😂😂😂😂
Tobby Isiba yikes mate, not the best mindset to have
Tobby Isiba I'm from Glasgow and more than half my school is black
@C.J MacDairmantBlack Scottish people exist. I am one so get fucked.
Looks like rich kids tryna be poor and edgy to me
ua-cam.com/video/TgmHOcPDSso/v-deo.html
Been the ways for like 20 years in London. On the plus side the fear of getting robbed on a night has dropped although police presence and drug prices are ramped up
@Flow Chart ah yes here your are the race bringer upper. stfu
These are not "Scotland's youth". These are a tiny small fringe of middle class attention seekers
Glasgows no that rough. Went there a few months ago and was only stabbed twice.
No1Survivalist Its only thugs stabbing thugs in Glasgow. What does that say about you?
im a thug.. rawr send me memes or risk a shanking... ;)
from the research, because the thugs know the least lethal/parts to Stab, they stab the heck outta shoulder blades n they make sure if they're doing the torso, they male these 1- 1\2 inch blades so that theres great damage but mostly never fatal. my Cuz lives in the heart of Glasgow
I told my maw to stay in that night
@@supermaxx1Glaswegians are considerate like that
So many Limmy characters in this video.
thats what I was thinking hahahaha
Dee dee in the background
Reacting against normal life by having parties? Eh, it just seems to me bars nd clubs close too early and ye just having an after sesh somwhere
It feels like the 90's party scene over there
MsMadKim yeah fashion and all
spice girls
simon jones you're exactly right!
Except for all the PMMA these kids take and get sick. Other than that yes.
yeah exactly and saying they have "MDMA"
“Tonight we’r gonna show you the depths of the underground scene” ... goes straight to a shitty pub
The first rule of the unit is you do not talk about the unit
Shhhh.... ;-)
Lol I.mind yesrs ago (10 years lol, when I used to go loads)they would spread rumours that it was shutdown to stop so many turnning up.lol
I wonder if that couch on the right is still in there.
Oh yes the unit, had many a good night there, cant believe its been about 10 years!
everybody was mad likeable, but i-D is always trying to put hype on people, its generous to call a progressive dance space political.
So original. Just like the last 4 or 5 generations before them, doing the exact same thing, with different words. Seriously, this sounds just like 1988 rave scene all over again.
Kevin Auld nah anyone could go to those these seem to be exclusive to these hipster fannys god forbid any rif raf got one of those cards
Rave culture was open to everyone even pretentious wee knobs like this. Plus it was huge. There hasn’t been a youth movement like it since, and there really were saying fuck You to society and the cops, defying laws brought on spec to stop them throwing massive illegal outdoor parties. I was a bit too young but caught the tail end of it. It was special.
Kevin Auld if you have been to any of these shitey nerd raves then you must have been born with a silver spoon in yer gub as thats the type of person that gets invited, plus it just looks like they just stand around lookin like models not even drinking or snorting the party dust lol canny beat a party in a gaff fulla ecto, beats any of yer toff partys anyday trust me 😂😂😂
No. Even. Close.
exactly
fuck me I never realised I've been a political activist since about 1982
Hmmm. It's hardly "incognito" if your "secret location" is clearly identifiable in the video! Those abandoned railway arches are in the Gorbals, right behind the Laurieston pub where some of this was filmed (just around the corner from me) - I'm sure these West End hipsters think they're so edgy for venturing south of the river for a party, but I can guarantee they wouldn't last five minutes walking around here at any other time. This video is definitely not representative of ordinary Glaswegians.
Totally agree 100%!
Cumbie would smash them
@@fakez0ne313 same down possil or figi park - also cunts say paisley isnae as rough as it used to be ycos there r a few new pubs an clubs - go down the estates, thats where its aw gone
yeah better watch themselves around Strathbungo, Pollokshields, Newlands and Maxwell Park ......
The message I received is that this is 100% inclusive to Glasgow youths. I see none of the typical Glasgow youths I have met. It's essentially filled with art students and creative types. Also if these kids are so political why are they spending the weekends getting fucked and not focusing towards making a difference in that field
After hour clubs/warehouses/units have been the norm in Glasgow forever....
I agree. I only watched this to see Sara Wild and Nova Scotia. Nova was only in it as a montage. But I like Sarah because she specifically set out to make a space for marginalised groups - LGBTQI+ and BIPOC - and that's something I can get behind.
@@elfparks none of those groups are marginalized and are in fact treated better than any other group of people in the pop culture scene solely based on their race/gender.
i-D contacted a lot of people from Glasgow including me saying it was a documentary about glasgow art and young culture, nobody ever said it was some commercial for illegal after parties. also, the video doesn't represent glasgow at all.
Best part of this was the cat in the flat.
Exactly what is needed in Glasgow, yet I never seem to find them when I'm out haha, incognito indeed.
Tk Uk .... There's multiple after party venues in Glasgow ...
I live just outside of Glasgow so I'm never able to find anything..and the few times I have I've been stranded, part of the fun though I guess..
Lorenzo The Gorbals, if this vid is anything to go by. Go round the back of the Laurieston pub (shown in the video) and there are some abandoned railway arches (also visible in the vid) that are often used for parties. I live just down the road so I clocked the location right away. Wouldn't recommend wandering round there at night unless you're in a crowd and you know exactly where you're going, tho.
another great piece of content, keep it up!
such teenage angst
it'S all about how you look, what you wear, and MDMA... great job guys... you're saving the world. cheers
Love those kinds of videos, keep it up!
The black boy says he's taking them to "the deaths of the underground scene" then they literally go to a pub and play on the puggy machine. Surely this is a parody or something?
It's like a really unfunny cringe inducing outtake of a Nathan barley episode. So many wankers
dear id, love your content aesthetics and messagewise. i recommend you to come over to leipzig, the booming underground city in germany atm. really interesting things going on here nightlife and artwise!
I was part of Baltimore US DC club scene many many years ago and I love what ur doing. Makes me smile!
this black dude is living wealthy though lol
cutting about the west end in his motor, living in a big nice flat.....
He is not gonna throw is wealth away should he? Like now money makes people almost unable to be apart of a underground movement, look graffiti, do you know how much paint costs? These guys just don't have to come out of slums lol.
@@FelixMartelet sentence doesny have to make sense can it?
I've met him & the Woman promoter, can attest they were both solid & decent. You couldn't pay me to share a grave with those club punters tho!
i live in a middle of nowhere super conservative small town and i would die for a community like this, this looks amazing. so cool
What country?
The parties are held at 923 Helen Street. You have to go in and say the secret phrase: "I've got 100 eccies up my arse".
Man that's a classic scene, same as in my home town from 1998-2004. Dance party organizers, DJs, art school students, skaters.
SOOO good, love these series
I love this type of Videos!!
Referring to Glasgow housing schemes as some sort of Scottish rebellious political identity whilst talking to a bunch of middle class art students! 😂😂
Folk are constantly trying to equate the after party scene nowadays to some sort of acid house revival, when its really nothing of the sort . There's a few decent afters spots about Glasgow which are probably bigger and better than Incognito which they didn't mention much in the video.
I'm waiting for more documentals like this
wow this was dope, where in the united states is glasgow? i really wanna go to one of these underground rap parties
bob meme its in scotland lmao
pretty sure it said america buddy
It's definitely Scotland, did you hear anyone American in the video?
i heard alot folks talking but nobody following through, where the hell is scotland any way?
bob meme every studied geography?
I come from Glasgow and this is utter pish
Ano man, the utter lack of Glaswegian accents is making me sick, jumped up Glasgow uni cunts thinking they are THEE definition of the Glasgow party scene, if yer no at someone cunts empty with cans of spilt Tennent's and cunts scrappin' in every room yer no dain it right
...is this a joke? The middle class youth is in need of a more noble cause than rebelling against "normal life"... in a warehouse.
So, go teach them
We've been doing this stuff for 30 odd years! On farms, reservoirs, old schools, in tents in the middle of nowhere! The Soundhaus was the nearest we got to having that all-nighter underground vibe in a club situation...until the effing Labour council, the "friend of the working class" (what a joke) put more and more barriers in our way, cutting back our licence hours until it was hardly worth opening up any more!
It was good while it lasted tho'!
Ah, that's it, couldn't remember the venue's name...The Soundhaus. Wandering back from there in the early light of summer, along the expressway...
@@walkswithdog9808 Many’s the car I dodged staggering along that expressway after a mad night at the “Soundy”!!
looks fairly tame. glasgow's 'after-hour' parties in the 2000s looked much better! and had none of that artsy bollocks.... the soundhaus after-parties, the units - etc.
this looks like a kindergarten for art geeks.
reminds me of effys parties from skins
Sophia Amodei because that's what they're modelled after, these people think they're living in a TV show
ok this is pure bs. underground rave parties existed way before the series. not exactly sure about their detailed history cos i'm not english but drum and bass/jungle was created around the beginning of the 1990s and rave was already popular, make your countings. It was exactly England that gave birth to such parties. So no, those kids are not copying skins, skins is copying their grandparents
Glasgow is in england now?
Those parties actually started more in Scotland but in the 90s way before they were born
come to easterhouse and try this pish
yass didny know aboot this, cheers ma man
This channel gives me life.
I think youth culture is really interesting. People that hate on it are old. Happens every generation.
I'm 22 and I hate these neo-culturist, degenerate scumbags. Does this make me old as well?
Ege Pulat no youre the only exception
The woeful thing is, that is not true. There are lots of people around me and around the world who try to create/build something useful instead of choosing the path of mindless and selfish destruction.
Ege Pulat how is it mindless selfish destruction? i see it as young people being creative and sharing music/fashion/ideas and having fun. a safe space from judgemental people like you. parties like these can be a cathartic release for some too.
Ege Pulat so youre not old but you have that old school mentality is what youre basically saying
Can't believe these goons think they started some kind of original scene...lmfao
This was posted on my birthday:)
coming to glasgow in one month for my erasmus, coudn't see anything better online nowadays, hopefully we end up one day in a place like this..
aww man, can't take those long, deep stares into the camera
the first past the post system isn't what stops Scotland being represented at Westminster hahaha if anything it's the reason the SNP are OVER represented but nah just spout something you overheard in the smoking area of sub club hahahahaha
Westminster doesn't gives a flying fuck about Scotland
philzambo didn't say that, did I? the first past the post system means SNP got 56/59 MP places even though SNP only had 50% of Scottish votes, so you can hardly argue that it's first past the post that's fucking Scotland over ...
I am surprised with the producers of the video, Glasgow does have a decent underground scene, and these were the best example of after parties the film company could come up with? I suppose the guys really doing it would never appear on screen.
glasgow probably has the next best underground scene behind london in the UK. and this video makes us seem like clowns. This shows nothing of what young folk in glasgow are like
100% agree. This viddy is a riddy
Wow.. surprisingly I really enjoyed this. Such style in their clothes! Now I want to take part in this scene too - I miss a good underground party. The last I've been to was in Montreal 20 years ago (sad crying face)
Glasgow underground or whatever aside, that upperclassman who said "yesterday I was crying and now I'm fine" was uni in a nutshell 🤧🥴
As a youth in Scotland, this is just nae it. You want to see Scottish fashion culture? Go to t in the park ahahah, Glasgow is pretty bangin tho would def recommend goin but don't expect what you seen in this documentary because you'll be disappointed to see that this isn't what Glasgow partying is really like.
Omg loike the Glasgow school of art! Limmy would love that guy!
this video is dope and the people in it are awesome
Enjoyed this.subbed
Best thing about Scotland: it's not England
Jessica Buchanan mon the scots
that used to be the best thing about scotland this video proves scotland has jst as many bell ends i thought u only found these cunts in london
But you were colonised by the English. You're the lowest of the low. :p
I hear ya!👍
Hardly anyone in this is Scottish and the "natives" have fully adopted the progressive hipster wankery of London or New York or Toronto or anywhere really. Nothing Scottish about them at all.
Where was subclub in this whole documentary ??
These i-D youth culture docs continue to inspire me. They are always produced in such an enjoyable way and I aspire to work and create mini docs like this in the future. Thank you for the inspiration
Great to see a new generation of GSOA people doing great things. In my day it was indie bands and dance music now it looks like there’s a whole new generation.
Lets be serious, this is really about getting steamin off Bucky and buckled off council lol
It's all about that multiculturalism and diversity.
Weve got one of the best party scenes in the world, only stay 30 mins from the city centre! Love a night out in Glesgaaaa
what's the track playin' at 6:10 ?
thanks in advance.
yo i really wanna go to glasgow for a day and just party for one night now
never knew scottish fashion was so fuckin sick
@Jay Alex you're a whole lot of fun
being from souther california and living in-between los angeles and san diego i see a lot of similarities to how our scene is and the people in it
ID always makes the best videos
Nice to see Dalcio Gomez actually doing something with his time in Glasgow
every single one of them has "that accent"
Posh Scottish
anyone know the last track? its on the last few minutes of the show and through the end credits?!
No wayyyy been to loads of these they are are crazzzzy good. Makes me proud being from here 💜 so sad for the 2nd fire at Glasgow school of art xx
The parody version of this video: twitter.com/BBCScotland/status/1069943808304078848
Hahaha thanks
As an architecture student, I'm so inspired by what they're doing.
Inspired by some pretentious kids 😂
always cool to see different people
“Rebelling” looks an awful like media portrayals of living the “best life.”
Yes, pushing the boundaries to the lowest denomination of the ‘limit’, and claiming it as some revolution.
Thought the thumbnail was Bob The Dragqueen out of drag heh
If government was reformed to their liking, they would still have a problem with it. Young people will always find a problem with society because they like to feel like they are rebelling. It makes them feel in control.
hellooo can anybody tell me how the shoes at 9:43 are called ?
Looks like a nice little party there really wasn't anything "underground" in my book.
What LiamBTV was saying - it's nothing to do with politics. I go to Incognito some of the nights it's on and this doc is really not a great representation of what it's like and all about. That said it was very well put together and of course it's great to see them covering PART of the underground scene in Glasgow. They completely missed out the whole music scene: grime etc. I know that i-D is more towards the art side of things although it's absolutely fundamental for what's happening in Glasgow at the moment. When you go to Incognito no one cares what gender etc you are, what background you come from or anything. It's all just about having a decent night with good people, music and culture. It really isn't a political statement or a big fuck you to society. It's a modern addition to Glasgow that makes everyone welcome and gives a platform for upcoming musicians and much more. Producers, MC's such as Rapture 4D, Polonis, Shogun, MFTM and so much more come through to Incognito and it's really growing the scene in Glasgow and Scotland. Definitely feel this doc wasn't a true representation of what it's about but still appreciate i-D covering Glasgow. Check out LVLZ, Shogun and all them if you're interested in the music scene!
Sounds decent from what you describe. Honestly this doc just showed me a bunch of west end wankers trying to pass off like they're political intellectuals. Just interested in decent music and awright chat tbh.
Honestly this doc put Glaswegians in a light that we don't suit. Glasgow is genuine, the people are genuine - the west end wankers aren't a true representation of the vast majority of the population here. Most people don't give a fuck about looking smart, we're just looking for a fun welcoming environment to have a good night in. I think i-D were trying to put a political spin on the underground scene that's not really there for the most part.
Btw ever been to Lunacy? I went for the first time a few weeks ago and it was magic. Eight hours of amazing tunes and the best people.
I been a couple times to Lunacy, last time I went it got raided though so I dunno how great they're doing these days. I've never been to this Incognito one though, was pretty surprised to see an Afters I didn't recognise! You ever been one of the lucky chosen elite, as this video is making them out to be?
Fuck I miss Glasgow, moved out to Skye with my family a few months ago and it's pretty but fuck me there's nothing happening.
Nah I'm not art school enough for Incognito haha. A few of my mates have been in the past and they've said it's really not much like what the documentary is making it out to be at all. Lunacy at least when I went was fucking packed, I think the polis turned up at one point but just looked about and left after 15 minutes.
What is the name of the track that come sin 06:10?
never knew there was that many creative people in my country...bra vid!
why does everyone who comments on i-D videos have to be such a fucking grinch? political or not they are having a good time so let them live..
Because we're tired of being inundated with leftist politics in EVERYTHING. If ID is about music & fashion, or indeed ID as the name suggests why not shoot a video on actual NEDS who's identity these posh tossers are imitating? Because gangs of white working class boys on Glasgow's estates aren't going to whining about Brexit & gender neutrality.
Pretty big excuse to do MDMA lol
Member of the underground party scene in Glasgow over 20 years ago before the Criminal Justice Bill...Was an amazing time in Glasgow's West End full basement tenements turned into night clubs setting up Decks and dancing until the sun came up... Magic lol
I am an American film student making a short about underground club culture. Any more information or ideas about how to research and explore this world?
Those videos are so fucking cool, I love watching them
"WOW SO REBELIOUS AND UNDERGROUND, SUCH A POLITICAL MESSAGE"
-normie
this is mental! "oh yeah there is a political issue we are facing, and we feel that our current political party doesn't represent us well, so we should throw an after hours party to resolve the matter"
right.
My favorite auntie Elaine Glenn is from paisley-love to hear their accent
These after parties aren't new. We were going to unit parties in Glasgows warehouses, lockups and the countryside while some of these folk were at primary school drawing pictures of their family in crayon. It's got hehaw to do with politics and everything to do with getting on it till 7am. Good on them for continuing the legacy though.
