Fascinating. I am a male and to a degree bisexual but more interested in women, and i date women exclusively because i know i am really not interested in anal, no matter if active or passive. I cannot, nor do i want to, get over the fact that for me its just too dirty, that is the mental/conscious problem. The emotional thing feels like it is even further out of control, certain smells just kill all positive emotions in me and make me want to get out of the situation. It is a problem (the bad smell, and its source) that needs to be fixed before anything else can happen. Certain smells i consider bad just trigger me to get rid of it, clean it up, make the smell go away, and i do not even consider it weird, as those smells are associated with various forms of organic decomposition. I am not a germophobe, i have potted plants, did have various pets in the past, and can enjoy the smell of a forest - although that smell also comes mostly from decomposition. So this is the first time i heared about the classification "Sides". I never made it a secret that i am probarbly to quite a degree bisexual, but never explored that side of me, and i remember a few occasions where i heared people talking badly about gays based on how they have anal sex and how that is disgusting. Then i pointed out that quite a lot of heterosexual couples enjoy anal sex at least from time to time, and that they are gay men who do not enjoy and do not do anal in any role. I remember people looking at me like i am from mars, especially because of the second part i think. But i knew i am right, about both parts. Putting a name on it is so important, so obviously good and helpful. It enables me to express it more easily, and might just have removed a big obstacle from me maybe one day exploring the other side of my sexuality.
Douching properly prior to engaging in anal sex (gay, straight, or bi) removes “certain smells” and “dirty”. Communication with your sex partner is key.

Wow. This is the first time I have heard someone else say this. I am not straight, but I am not turned on by anal sex at all. It has been a big issue in finding understanding.
I have wondered about this actually. The stereotype is that all gay men want to have hardcore sex all the time with a lot of random partners with no strings or commitments. Clearly that is not true. But that stereotype was created by straight people I think. Anyway no one should feel obligated to engage in any sexual acts that they are not interested in. And why would you want someone to do it just because you want them to knowing that they are not enjoying it as well? Sex should be pleasurable for all parties not just one or the other. Plus you run the risk of losing someone that is really amazing just because they don’t want to engage in sexual acts they are not comfortable with.
I was a side for most of my gay life and it was great. I recently got into penetrative sex which is cool but i can definitely live without it. Being a side lowers the risk of STDs and anal related injuries so to me it's very appealing b/c at the end of the day the same goal is accomplished as with penetrative sex.
@@LondonPestControl "A homosexual who prefers more often than not to engage in other forms of same sex activity (fellatio, kissing, frottage, rimming, mutual masturbation, erotic massage, other countless acts of foreplay, etc), as opposed to penetrative sex." - Urban dictionary, so YMMV but seems accurate.
I'm mixed on the term side mostly cause I'm not big on the name. I'm probably, still gay with a dash of asexuality. Having asperger's syndrome I'm told most people on autism spectrum tend to be more likely to lean asexual on some level. Its difficult finding a decent man in general especially in my country. If anything, this highlights the failure of most sex ed not counting oral as sex which is exactly what it is.
This makes so much sense! Thank you for sharing and enlightening us! I learned something.. Do we call straight people who don't like penetrative sex, Sides also?
Yes, that’s why it was important for me to exist in that conversation. There is a lot of the actual conversation that was cut, but this term is not exclusive to gay men. Vice did wrong by putting this title.
I didn't know this was surprising for straight people. To a lot of gay/bi men, it has been ingrained to us to be fearful of HIV/AIDS due to the 80s crisis that disproportionately affect us . I didn't have penetrative sex until 27.
You'll have to explain the term to everyone anyways, could just skip it and say you're not into penetration. What's this obsession with making up words for every preference anyways? I don't need to identify as a gay foot to be into feet
Well I was having this thought as well, like this obsession with labels and putting ourselves into boxes. Because what would be the word for someone who only occasionally enjoys penetration? Would they also call themselves a side? Wouldn't they still have to have a conversation about not being a full side and only rarely enjoying that kind of thing? I think there is actually more to be gained by having a conversation about it then just using a label anyway.
Labels create more division. And the people (elite, technocrats) financing this media outlets want people confused, afraid, divided, enraged, etc. Is also a brutally banal and vulgar topic to be discussing it in media outlets. Maybe in your living room with some close friends, but outside of that?
I am only 2.5 minutes in, and I must say your use of animation and character choices is hysterical... I especially enjoyed the bottom's "blinking eyes" 👀 sound effect, and the 2 sides tenderizing their T-bone steaks!! 💀🎉
Please Vice, change the goddamn title. This video isn't even bad, it's legitimately informative and a good topic but the title ruins it and opens yourself up to unwarranted antagonism.
Looks like (after two years) and only 124k views that the algorithm has buried your video or shadow-banned your content. I can relate completely to this type of discrimination for the same reason. Best wishes.

Interesting the hetero side topic too, I think. You know we(lgbt comunity) are nore mentally open in certain topics, topics that often are seen like a tabu for straight people, they don't even try to consider them, they are afraid of consider certain things like they're born to be ashemed of analize certain things in themselves and so in others... we should talk more about sides, gay or straight they are.
I'm a top, and to me, it has nothing to do with masculinity or being dominant. I believe the top should not be dominant, and the bottom person should not be submissive. We should be equal.
Friend, I agree with you. There are certain things that should remain private and not out of shame. Just like I don’t want hear two random people(or people I know) talking about what they do in their bed.
Yall got too many terms - cis, sides, tops, bottoms, verse, them, they, etc. Then had the nerve to add an I & an A to LGBTQ. I'm trying my best to be an ally but DAMN
Fr... I guess I am side but I couldn’t careless identifying myself as such. I think labels should,be dismantled cause sit just groups you into a certain group of people in the society
Nah, is not phobia, is just common sense and pragmatism. You like it in your booty, you don´t... fine, we don´t care, we dont NEED to discuss it in public, is your business, not news worthy, not debate worthy, certainly doesn´t belong to open internet with no age restriction whatsoever.
@@juankplaysmusic I think sex should be discussed publicly in a reasonable manner, such as in this video. If you are not interested, do not watch it. 🤷🏻♂️
I would have to say that the term "side" is helpful for many gay men... it helps other "sides" know that they are not alone, and it opens up more conversations around intimacy and personal needs in relationships. As a straight man I'm happy to expose myself to this knowledge never knew this.
Yeah right. I can't believe how i lived before without this knowledge.
🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨
I’m glad to hear this new label is helping someone out there… Just because something doesn’t apply to you doesn’t mean you should rain on their parade…
I doubt putting labels on humans ever helped anyone.
@@Pandamasque if they feel this label helps them connect to others who feel the same as them, who is anyone to say otherwise?
Yeah but the problem is that the majority doesn't ask nor care. We want more journalism about China or Ukraine... What this man does in his bedroom doesn't affect me or you. Worthless video.
@@houseplant1016 I’m straight and I don’t like penetration sex .. where’s my video ? Just hand jobs for me . Must be from all the years of teen masterbation. I’m sorry if I sound perverted and gross . Must be cause I’m straight!! And no one asked me 😂
@@houseplant1016 the minority cares. There are so many people who watched this and said "omg that's ME!". If it don't apply, let it fly!
Wow. This is the first time I have heard someone else say this. I am not straight, but I am not turned on by anal sex at all. It has been a big issue in finding understanding.
I'm straight guy and not interested in putting anything in an anus or in my unus. No way
Same.
Plus you run the risk of losing someone that is really amazing just because they don’t want to engage in sexual acts they are not comfortable with.
clearly this is true
I was a side for most of my gay life and it was great. I recently got into penetrative sex which is cool but i can definitely live without it. Being a side lowers the risk of STDs and anal related injuries so to me it's very appealing b/c at the end of the day the same goal is accomplished as with penetrative sex.
What’s a side?
Right, nobody cares
You will still get STD from sex regards lmao...
Thanks for sharing this. I can finally sleep good at night knowing this 😌
@@LondonPestControl "A homosexual who prefers more often than not to engage in other forms of same sex activity (fellatio, kissing, frottage, rimming, mutual masturbation, erotic massage, other countless acts of foreplay, etc), as opposed to penetrative sex." - Urban dictionary, so YMMV but seems accurate.
I have Asperger's too maybe that's why I feel similar to how you feel. I do prefer the look of women over men though.
This makes so much sense! Thank you for sharing and enlightening us! I learned something.. Do we call straight people who don't like penetrative sex, Sides also?
I don't see why not? 🤷♂️
Yes, that’s why it was important for me to exist in that conversation. There is a lot of the actual conversation that was cut, but this term is not exclusive to gay men. Vice did wrong by putting this title.
No
I didn't know this was surprising for straight people. To a lot of gay/bi men, it has been ingrained to us to be fearful of HIV/AIDS due to the 80s crisis that disproportionately affect us . I didn't have penetrative sex until 27.
Maybe it's time to turn the notifications off.
Finally, some real news...
This is a side piece.
@♋ Idk how too 🍻
@♋ Idk how too It was a joke. This is useless 🗑!!!
Great video that needed put into the world, thanks Vice team!
You'll have to explain the term to everyone anyways, could just skip it and say you're not into penetration. What's this obsession with making up words for every preference anyways? I don't need to identify as a gay foot to be into feet
I think the idea is to spread knowledge of the term (and acceptance) so you don't have to give a long spiel every time
Well I was having this thought as well, like this obsession with labels and putting ourselves into boxes.
People like being apart of groups. Don't know what to tell you dude.
@@ace625 This isn't knowledge man.
Labels create more division. And the people (elite, technocrats) financing this media outlets want people confused, afraid, divided, enraged, etc. Is also a brutally banal and vulgar topic to be discussing it in media outlets. Maybe in your living room with some close friends, but outside of that?
The fact that we get free documentaries on UA-cam by VICE News is truly a gift. 👍👍👍
Oh so I'm a side now.
Who asked
Looks like (after two years) and only 124k views that the algorithm has buried your video or shadow-banned your content. I can relate completely to this type of discrimination for the same reason. Best wishes.
Grindr has added the term side onto their platform. I first heard of side due to Michael Henry's video. Glad to see the term is picking up in popularity
Thank you Vice, very cool!

Pretty sure this would apply to Stephen Fry. Having him in this video would've made it 1000% better.
Yeah Stephen Fry has been pretty open about not being into penatrative sex. Im going to take a stab in the dark and say they don't have Stephen Fry money in their video budget however!
@@aviendha1154 He definitely would've done this as a freebie or at discount.
I've been out for decades and decades. This is homophobia at its worst. There is nothing masculine or feminine about intercourse. If you don't like it then take some lessons and learn.

We should be equal.
i'm very happy to see trans people included in this conversation!!!

I have been out for 30 years, and one thing that I have noticed is that guys who take it, age badly. Ironic because they are usually the most vain.

I would have to say that the term "side" is helpful for many gay men... it helps other "sides" know that they are not alone, and it opens up more conversations around intimacy and personal needs in relationships. I have always preferred the other extracurriculars vs. penetration. NGL, the term "side piece" came to mind when I first heard this term. Maybe the term "side order" would be better?! 😅🎉
