Gunslinger damage is actually really good, for two reasons; first, because you're usually attacking Touch AC with a full Base Attack Bonus character, you're hitting almost every time you shoot no matter the opponent. Rapid Fire, Two-Weapon Fighting, Deadly Aim...still hitting!
Second, you've got that x4 Crit Multiplier. People build scythe characters just for that crit multiplier. And guess what, you're confirming your crits on touch AC (mostly), so when you get a chance at a crit, it's almost certain to be confirmed and the damage EXPLODES.
One tactical wrinkle for the Gunslinger, however, is the grit recovery mechanic. As a gunslinger, you get Grit back when you reduce something to 0 hit points or less. What does this mean? It means you are a dirty, kill-stealing menace. With your high initiative, long range and reliable damage, you will be sniping out any wounded target the party is engaged with, because it lets you spend Grit like it's going out of style. Sure, killing things off is good tactics, but it does rob some of the other players of satisfaction and can cost them their full attack actions as their enemy is suddenly dead and they have to move to engage a new foe.
Normally a ranged damage dealer would consider the initiative order; if the engaged monster is going late in the order the people in melee with it will probably pull it down and you can weaken (or outright kill!) other targets. But the gunslinger just sees a big fat 'EASY +1 GRIT' sign on its forehead. And if another player has feats or abilities that trigger on the same conditions (like Dreadful Carnage, where you can Intimidate everything within 30ft when you drop an enemy), you may have done more harm than good.
On the other hand, get your party to feed you easy kills (mopping up after a fireball) and you'll be swimming in Grit, which is really important for some archetypes like the Mysterious Stranger or Pistolero who can spend Grit quite fast.

This was a pretty extensive reply, I appreciate the time you took to be so thorough in your breakdown and refutation!
I've read it over a few times and I see what you're saying. I still feel that going with an archetype is better than base Gunslinger; such as the Mysterious Stranger and Pistolero; but the situation you describe of mopping up wounded enemies to keep grit flowing does rectify a lot of the issues the Gunslinger has.
It also feels thematic with the idea of a small, skilled team having a big shootout with a ton of enemies; like The Magnificent Seven.

@@GamersDenLoremaster Archetypes probably are better; Mysterious Stranger gets you +CHA to damage at 1st level; it costs Grit, but that's not a big deal and it's a really good dip for a Paladin or Eldritch Knight Sorcerer build.

      Thank you!
It's a shame about the Gunslinger too; a lot of it's abilities are done better by it's archetypes, or the archetypes of other classes with a couple of feats thrown in to top those off.
It should be a much cooler class than what it shakes out to be, though it's by no means bad.

@@Ramkross That'd be my recommendation too, though I might do that one down the line, maybe make some of the abilities a little more punchy.
