I think he's so so so practised that he's free on the piano, he doesn't need to think about it, he's bored so he can express himself...it's quite a genius I must admit, thought he was overhyped before this but now I know why he's famous. Lots of talent and lots of practice. He plays the piano so easily like one breathes.
Although his facial expression is funny, I appreciate at Lang Lang's technique and his musical expression! Music is not only for entertainment, but for spiritual enjoyment! Everyone has the right to comment on Lang's facial expression, however, at the same time, if you do love music, you should pay more attention on the real techniques of him.
Technique is not anything to the love of music.. if music is measured by technique.. then there is a something called MIDI can play anything at marvelous speed with no mistakes and musicality that the editor put
If some of you people don't like Lang Lang then DON'T THE VIDEOS OF HIM. Some people are just flat out JEALOUS when it comes to Lang Lang because they know he is one of the best. Again he has earned the right to look however he wants, he has earned it. Some of you people need to read one of his detailed Bios sometime and see just how rough it was for him in his youth days. He had to work VERY hard to become the amazing pianist he is today. Show some respect.
I agree with you. Lang Lang really enters into the spirit of this music and brings out its humour and fun in a truly engaging way - very refreshing in an arena that can often take itself too seriously.
Though it has been awhile since I last heard Lang Lang, I still remember being moved by this performance in my teen years. Now that I've graduated from a conservatory and that I've played this piece, I understood how Lang Lang knows how to work the crowd in a world where classical music is still to be introduced through the Internet. Yes, there's sloppy spots and perhaps too impulsive musicality but this draw me and hundreds of "non-musically-educated" people closer to music. His enjoyment and extra musical gestures seem to tick of some people and that's allowed. All I know is that his generous musicianship moved me. Besides, this was a performance almost a decade ago! He's gone through a lot of change and this is just one of his many perfect or imperfect concerts and he needs it in his process.
Stop trying to justify the butchering of this piece. It is clear his technical ability is not enough for this piece. His rubato makes no sense. His tempo is off the charts. He has a plethora of errors and his dynamics are poor!
Well this proves that you can take the Chinaman out of China but you can't take China out of the Chinaman. He must be using Oriental rhythm and it is horrible.
u cant say hes an actor. as soon as he touches one key, he is in performance mode, whether in front of 1000 or by himself. he is one of the greater modern pianists.
Lang Lang offers a love of music which is evident in his playing. He is inventive and relaxed. His enjoyment of the music that somehow comes out of him is infectious. His presentation inspires many to want to play music for the shear enjoyment of playing. The world needs more people playing for this reason.
I heard lang Lang play with the Czech Philharmonic live in Dublin Ireland last night. He played the Rachmaninov Variations on a theme by Paganini. He was truly fantastic. He got a standing ovation. He played a John Field Nocturn as an encore.
It is quite an exciting performance, I don;t know why people argue about his expressions. It's eccentric, but most people who are gifted are, so who cares is he pulls faces - more for us to enjoy!
I completely agree. Kissin has marvelous technique, but he also has a wonderful sense of balance and harmony. His performance is very noble and much more musical than the Lang Lang's.
This is Lang Lang's best recording of the Fledermaus I have heard! Much better than the others! I really enjoyed it and there are some really breathaking moments, musically and technically. But still, Kissin's interpretation remains the ultimate for me.
His performance great and enjoying to me. I listen to his music, i feel release a lot . I been stress for the whole week, till insomnia. Hope tonight can sleep well.
Do you even know this piece? Go and compare it with other pianists, this is suppose to be played this fast, but not alot of pianist can do it flawlessly. Lang Lang actually took this piece to a whole other level, geniuses are people who are not afraid to go beyond their boundaries despite what people say and giving a performance that ignites and blows you away!
The man got what it takes to deliver!!! For those of you who don’t like him because of “facial expressions”, my advices, put on the music and close your eyes and enjoy. Music is meant for the EARS not the eyes. If you want something for the eyes visit an Art gallery.
GREAT ENCORE!!!!! (even though i have shat on lang lang in the past (even on this video), i take it back-- this, though it may not be "music" in the conventional sense is still damn awesome)
When I was in my teens, I played Strauss'Blue Danube arranged by Schulz-Evler, and I remember having a field day with it (perhaps not as excessively as Lang Lang, since my teacher, Adele Marcus, screamed at me for doing that!)I just remember the freedom and the love of the music. I believe Lang Lang is just going through a youthful and exuberant stage in his life--it's nice to see someone embrace this old world style of playing.
For those of you who think he's "acting" or that his expressions are "fake", you must not've ever experienced music the way he, and many other professional musicians, do. When a true pianist touches the piano, its like they forget their surroundings and know only music. They feel the music they play. That's what sets them apart from regular musicians. Search other pianists and you'll also find that, when playing, they are FULLY engrossed in their music.
There's a real question with pieces like this as to how much musical value a pianist can bring to them. Lang Lang's version is probably a little more fun to listen to precisely because he doesn't treat it like it's Beethoven. Kissin's is a much more musical account, but not quite as exciting.
Ok everyone thinks he messed up this peice. but give me a break, this is a freaking transcription that is written for pure virtuosity and enjoyment- so in that sense, he nailed it completely.
why does everyone criticize lang lang? who cares what he looks like when he plays, he plays amazingly and thats all there is to it. If you could play better, prove it!
Lang Lang has earned and worked for all his tallents. So what if he or any one hits a bfew wrong notes. At least we know he is human. I respect this man. I also respect The Video Game Pianist that I got to meet in person. Lang Lang is a master.
Why does people hate him so? His facial expressions reveals his feeling for the song. I personally like this performance. BTW> Did you noticed that the video couldn't keep up with his finger motions?
Yeah, this piece is very well played by Lang lang. He demonstrates alot of talent. I have a question. When he does those glascendos...(err i think spelling is incorrect) does he just hit white notes all the way up and down? or is there more?
Pareciera que lang lang estuviera siempre en una competencia de velocidad cada vez que toca, para demostrar que el puede tocar mas rapido que cualquiera
a genius technic! not only one but a million Fledermauses you' ll see fly.... Even with upper virtuosity, the musicality isn't pressed to the back. Bravo!!!
I bet that if you were to set Lang Lang on a desert island and asked him what two objects he would want, he would say, "My piano and my nail-clipper, to make sure that I can continue playing!!!"
why you say hes not a pianist? He played piano all his live, he is just awesome...love him :) he also is very young and maybe when he is 50 like the other old pianist, he will be the most talentaded pianist over the globe!
musics are in ourself..musics are a way of expressing self emotions..how fast how slow..doesnt matter as long as the emotions are expressed to make the most out of a tune or music..that's the utmost passion of music..it's individual..u may like it or not but donot criticise how others play..ppl that admires his playing cause they are able to feel his passions...
A question for all of you guys: what is more important in piano? speed? (olimpics and show of and a fast typing like a efficient secretary) or music, (enjoyment, pasion, poetry, sensuality, romantisism, etc.)
Musicality or musicianship can be plain or very complex depending on how you want to define it. To me, if majority of the people like the music, it must be pretty good musicality, that's how the world works, plain and simple. On the other hand, if you have a pre-conceived idea of what music MUST sound to be of good musicality, you make things complex for yourself, and you run the risk of being a LONELY PERSON. Acceptance by the populace is vital for a professional pianist, Lang Lang knows it!
He did play hun. rhap.#6. and it was fast..i posted 120 with the metronome..( 8 octaves per second) Horowitzes 1947 recording had octaves at 132..and that was still harnessed with his control and at FFF. Also. Horowitz maintains speed which is the toughest to do
@skimask777 Yes, music is for the ears. But music is not only something as a sound. It is emotions, it is subtleness. And if you find anything subtle and something called "music" (not only "technically well made sound") in Lang Lang playing, your right for your taste.
That's actually the way professional instrumentalists are supposed to clap - either with their bows (stick) or by stomping their feet - clapping with hands is rare.
I always enjoy watching Lang Lang play, rather than simply listen to a recording, I'm sort of a synaesthesiac, lol, and it's really nice to see gestures that match with the intensity of the notes, I'm not going to go into interpretations, but in terms of technique, LangLang's really got it down, I don't know anyone that can play as fast as he can AND do the gestures he does at the same time, pure sprezzatura
I'd have to agree with Poojoj... (who despite a considered and thoughtful post has been thumbed-down by the fanboys..) There is no doubt that Lang Lang has introduced classical music to an audience who might not have otherwise gotten into it - and for that he should be applauded. The fact remains, he simply doesn't compare with the 'greats'.
0112337. I agree. I enjoyed this performance. I cannot understand why people criticize others. If I don't like someone's playing I just don't comment. Lang Lang is clearly very talented. He is also very popular and is introducing many to classical music, which is just great. :)
Yes, it is actually not "kosher" to clap with your hands while playing. Thanks for the compliment - too bad it's not true. Lang Lang is a great inspiration for new students - he's young, enjoyable, and well rehearsed. Way to go!
Alfred Grunfeld - a Viennese pianist (1852-1924). Grunfeld made a lovely and gentle recording of this piece himself in 1910 (reissued on CD as VAI/IPA 1019). Kissin's is really superb, but Lang Lang makes a banging hash out of it.
WOW it looks like he's being fast-forwarded... and I don't like it when people bash him for his passion, I don't think he's putting on a show on purpose; how could you play something that crazy without his cringes and glances towards the heavens, lol... he's a genuine genious and will go down as one of the greats of the 21st century... lighten up people
Yo realmente disfruto de ésta ejecución=D!!! es muy bella, interesante, divertida y emocionante. I really enjoy this performance=D!!! it's beautiful, interesting, funny and exiting!!
This is absolutely fantastic. Sure he is probably exhausted and there are plenty of "ossia" solutions for some passages, a bunch of errors too, but the level of enjoyment, risk and improvisation he puts in is hallucinating. I don't agree that kissin's version is better. Kissin is a GREAT pianist but very different from Lang Lang. His version is serious, virtuoso and very clean. However there is 0% risk taken or enjoyment, as this kind of saloon music requires. So if you want to learn this work, listen to Kissin. Then if you want to play it, take a peak to Lang too, it can only help.
If you want to create music listen to kissins, if you wish to play like a buffoon listen to lang langs. He ruins the gliss chords @ 2:50 and just about everything else. To people with working ears it is clear this piece was technically too difficult for him.
Music is about communicating emotions. Personally I enjoy Lang Lang here because his extravagant and absolute manner of playing fits to this piece more than Kissin, which I find playing this like a robot. Not saying Kissing is bad pianist, I love him, is just that here he can't communicate what it needs, this work is about joy and exaggeration of the joy. And I would avoid expressions as "working ears", "buffoon", in general people taking like that are total ignorant in the field. Accept that people can feel emotions differently and don't be arrogant.
Valery Please explain how masturbation performances equal musically focused performances. This piece was too technically difficult for him, please try your hardest to rationalize the poorly played gliss chords @ 2:50 and every other mistake that other performers work there ass off to eradicate. if kissin was a robot there wouldnt be rubato in his play.
You are THE BEST. VIVA LA HORCHATA y los fartons......
But the difference is when Horowitz played, he kept his goddamn head still, shoulders down, relaxed, and played. He's very musical, but he's so into his own showmanship, that the facial expressions become louder than his nuance. And that's where he suffers the most, nuance, subtlety... every dynamic shift is very soft to very loud, every time shift is drastic , and there is so little in between. If he stopped SHOWING us how good a musician he is, and PLAYED his music, he might finally grow
I had the great pleasure of meeting him back when he was 19 years old. He played the Liszt Pagannini Etudes like a god. Too bad he has never recorded them.
If Lang's sound did not correspond to his body language & facial expressionsI would be the first to call him an actor..YET the two are very much interelated...Just watch & listen...Lang is the only pianist to have managed to give us the multitude of nuances & hues thatmay be hidden in apiece of music...And he is doing it by being body & soul connected to the music he is interpreting...spiramus
I don't get it...when did I say he wasn't good? I said he played a wrong note in reply to someone who said that he's never seen Lang Lang play a wrong note. Furthermore, even if I didn't play as well as he does, I can still critisize him - my playing ability has nothing to do with his playing ability.
Lang Lang gets too much taken away from him. He is an unbelievable pianist. I saw him in Birmingham, England in Sept 2011 and everyone there was completely blown away by him, I certainly was! I think most people know some of his interpretations can be somewhat different, but that doesn't mean he's no good or can't play pieces without feeling or a sense of understanding. I highly recommend people watch Lang Lang Live in Vienna - sensational!!!
Last comment. Comparing Lang to Horowitz is not fair. I feel soory for Lang. Being compared to the greatest pianists of all the time. Having heard him just last week..mere feet from him..convinced me that he is a marvelous pianist..with formidable tone.
Yes,Lang Lang is a wonderful performer, and yes,,,a fantastic musician. I prefer other more straightforward playing but Lang is tremndously gifted. He suffers a bit from excessive Romanticism...but.when u have octaves that fast..who cares.haha
1] It's not HIS music. 2] It is your right to believe that I am jealous 'or something'. 3] There really is no such thing as 'interpretation'. That's because the COMPOSER wrote the piece - not the performer.
No 2 performers will convey the same musical expressions in the same way. Just learn to appreciate the differences and why he's successful. Food for thought?
does there any rules in music world that says that a pianist cant have his own facial expression? its just their own way of playing.. so just enjoy his playing!
Ok it's impossible not to praise this performance despite the tricks he does to make some parts easier (glissando's instead of scales, skipping some octaves, convenient pedaling etc). It has some very musical moments, but all in all, Kissin's performance is superior.
How good he is!! Normally, guys who have the guts to sit and immediately start playing (Evgeny Kissin) are more than sure and confident. Lang lang is just more than an amazing showoff.
But his playing makes this piece sounds cute and adorables, If anyone wants to hear how a chinese sounds listen to langs performance (I think he's chinese???)
I think he's so so so practised that he's free on the piano, he doesn't need to think about it, he's bored so he can express himself...it's quite a genius I must admit, thought he was overhyped before this but now I know why he's famous. His dynamic contrast is unmatchable. AMAZING.

I forgot how many times I have listened this.
I heard lang Lang play with the Czech Philharmonic live in Dublin Ireland last night. He played the Rachmaninov Variations on a theme by Paganini. He was truly fantastic. He got a standing ovation. He played a John Field Nocturn as an encore.
the ending was gorgeous. just good stuff, none other than from Lang Lang.
whoa--beautiful,clean work...BRAVO!!
the best interpretation I've ever heard!
ex, :55-56, why the sudden drop in dynamic? it chops up the melodic line. Technique impeccable, nonetheless

This is Lang Lang's best recording of the Fledermaus I have heard! Much better than the others! I really enjoyed it and there are some really breathaking moments, musically and technically. But still, Kissin's interpretation remains the ultimate for me.

@Sashomei The whole piece is "Soiree de VIenne" by Alfred Grunfeld. It is based on waltz themes from Johann Strauss Jr's "Fledermaus".

If Lang's sound did not correspond to his body language & facial expressionsI would be the first to call him an actor..YET the two are very much interelated...Just watch & listen...Lang is the only pianist to have managed to give us the multitude of nuances & hues thatmay be hidden in apiece of music...And he is doing it by being body & soul
connected to the music he is interpreting...spiramus
Those are some sick octaves!
Having heard him just last week..mere feet from him..convinced me that he is a marvelous pianist..with formidable tone.
the members of the orchestra in the background just stare at him as if they are seeing a ghost playing....
Amazing❤
Yes,Lang Lang is a wonderful performer, and yes,,,a fantastic musician. I prefer other more straightforward playing but Lang is tremndously gifted. He suffers a bit from excessive Romanticism...but.when u have octaves that fast..who cares.haha
Extraordinaire!!!!
this is the best ive ever heard lang lang play
I like his style. And there's nothing to say one man can't have two or more interpretations of the same piece.
Amazing skill, great show, lots of fun, enjoyable, but not really there musically.
what a powerful piece!!
Food for thought?
its nice wish it had the same recorded quality as evgeny kissin to hear.
does there any rules in music world that says that a pianist cant have his own facial expression? its just their own way of playing..
so just enjoy his playing!
Ok it's impossible not to praise this performance despite the tricks he does to make some parts easier (glissando's instead of scales, skipping some octaves, convenient pedaling etc). It has some very musical moments, but all in all, Kissin's performance is superior.
he plays so fast.i like it so much.
Your profile picture sums up how I am feeling right now.
How good he is!! Normally, guys who have the guts to sit and immediately start playing (Evgeny Kissin) are more than sure and confident. Lang lang is just more than an amazing showoff.
delightful performance!! He knows how to tickle your sensitive sense of hearing...;)
But his playing makes this piece sounds cute and adorables, If anyone wants to hear how a chinese sounds listen to langs performance (I think he's chinese???)
