l had a GF from Brazil in HS. So naturally l bought a 75' type 1 vw fuelie beetle and drove from Dallas Tx to Ushuaia Argentina and back in 1981 to impress her. We drove up the west coast of Chile which was a baja run back then. We drove from Dallas to Cabo San Lucas the next year and back. Love the channel.

In January 1989 I drove a 77 Chevy from Texas up to Alaska, bed full of a 4x4 quad, 5 spare tires for the truck,20 extra gallons of gas, tools and all my survival gear packed into the cab, just a 22 year old kid with cash in my pocket going to a place I always wanted to see, spent 4 years up there having the time of my life, drove out of there in January of 93 all the way down to Florida than Arizona. I am hoping drive from Deadhorse Alaska to Key West in the next few years after knocking a few more farther away destinations off my bucket list.

Listening to Jim and his brief description of that adventure, makes everything that I have experienced in my short 52 years, seems like nothing in comparison. I’m almost too intimidated to read his book. That is something that I can’t even fathom of attempting an adventure of that magnitude.
As for the C60……Cole……I’m happy for ya dude! Taking on the challenge that you want too do, takes some intestinal fortitude. My hats of to ya!

Cole, I have a suggestion in case the camper isn't rebuildable. Get someone to laser scan the outside and inside dimensions. That way you can recreate it from more modern materials. That way you can change appliance locations and window and door openings. This could possibly start a whole new vintage camping industry. I'm just surprised that no one has ever tried to use an Airstream style camper for the basis for a Roamer build. More aerodynamic.

You're absolutely correct. It's NOW or never if you're gonna do something big. The old folks always told us every year passed faster than the year before & you know what? They who I don't call them old anymore since I'm racing towards 70 but they were truly the voice of experience. They were simply preparing us. 38, yup better get to doing the big stuff before it's too late. You'll look back & think to yourself, where have the years gone & I'm tellin ya with the last 3+ years being so F'ed UP it's hard for me to imagine that it's vanished. I've done a lot but of course hindsight VS foresight I would have done some things differently. Oh and aw, don't do "ANYTHING" big financially like, sell a farm or a business [IF IT'S PAID FOR] due to 😵 love because you more than likely will look back & realize you shouldn't have done it because you could have done what you did anyway by borrowing against the farm or business. Oh and aw, you better take that big adventurous trip because if it's not her idea & there are some bumps in the road as there will be she'll remind you of it until hell freezes over, Forever. Maybe you've got an unusual woman already & she'll be agreeable but that would be the exception & very rare. I never thought I would say that but there, I just did. Good luck & happy safe travels. Now let's see 🤔 what can I do with my 7000 GMC?

Because overlanders are top heavy they tip and slide sideways, to overcome this make it a Pop-top. Colorado pop-top will put a custom pop-top on anything for 3 grand. And the diesel camper heater is so hot you won't have to worry about being cold.

I’m definitely following this project. To have Expedition truck out of the 50’s or 60’s Ford, GMC or Chevy is my dream truck to have. But with Cummins power line or other more economical options, so I could drive long vacation trips from Finland to Norway or so. I also would like to hear talking about expenses and which is wise to do and which is not. Swapping Cummins is always a guite big project to do specially when you are doing it really well, so costs for doing it is one big concern. For doing this as 4x4 truck, you maybe need to buy some 5500 Dodge Ram or other already 4x4 diesel truck from 5500 or more category and that increase your budget really fast. I’m really wanting to see how you figure it all out and build the extreme expedition truck and hit the road to Alaska.

At least you guys know now that if something happens to the winch controller or it's misplaced again, a quick trip to harbor freight and you can get another wired one. They have them in stock.

Im doing something similar, i was a mechanic, but i got disabled at 33 with ms. Building up a 2000 f550, as an adventure motor home, for when i can backpack/canoe any more. I went with modern frame, and will swap a 60's cab on it, seemed to make more sense than swapping whole drive train like you, but my budget is probably way lower than yours, hah, i got my truck for 8hrs of injector rebuilding.

I’m honestly really tempted to go that way. Makes a lot of sense but my goal was to keep as much of the truck as I can… but at this point it is what it is and I think about doing a swap onto the ram chassis

It is a 292 straight six from 1974
Armstrong steering . Break a sweat turning it around . Needed lube every 60 thousand miles …. Ha

I'd figure out how to use the old PTO for the hydraulics to power a generator or something else like maybe a winch.

That would be a cool solution to needing power. We do that already at the shop

So the orange vehicle you moved by hand, it looks very much like a 1977 BMW 3 series, or its predecessor the 70’s BMW 2002 coupe. In fact that car came in orange paint, so I’m feeling like that could be it. The rear side windows certainly look correct as well.
