Dear tactical, You guys are hands down the most knowledgeable fisherman in this bizarre UA-cam bass fishing world. I’ve noticed that other UA-cam bass personalities take your information and make it there own, almost video for video. I know you guys are the best just wanted to you to know. -Brokeangler
"The baits not in all the way" lmao the bait was all the way in it's mouth the first two casts. Nice video though. I've come to learn that if I swing and miss most times for me it gets them more aggressive. As long as I don't penetrate and pull them off the bed.
That fish totally choked it the first two casts (fully unexpected compared to other fish the same day) and yet another reason that the underwater angle is so awesome! I couldn't see any of that from the surface.
Another strategy I utilize is to throw smaller lures that don't necessarily provoke such a strong reaction but assure that the bedding fish eats the lure entirely rather than attempt to carry it off of the bed. I've noticed that if I throw smaller spider jigs or ned rigs rather than try to carry the lure off the bed and spit it they'll just choke it to get rid of it.
That is so cool, I loved watching the Smallmouth! They are one of my favorite animals, I even have a baby one as a pet with videos on my channel of him!
I was bed fishing today too. caught a 4lb and 2.75lb. Bed fishing is a fun challenge and i like the underwater footage. I've been wanting to do this as well but just haven't bought a camera yet.
Its such a pain in the neck it isn't even funny but the end result is pretty amazing. Be ready for a lot of dissapointment... most of them HATE the camera :-p
that was driving me nits watching the underwater view. was like set the hook already. but very different actually there. nice video, nice concept. something to think about and try, thank you. keep putting out the great videos.
We have them here in north Los Angeles County, in Castaic Lake as well as Pyramid Lake!! I was even featured on this website!! everything-smallmouth.com/california-smallmouth-bass-theres-bronze-in-them-there-hills/
I just don't understand how ya'll don't have 100k subscribers. I have been fishing for 40 years and I still manage to learn something by watching your vidz. Every fisherman out there could learn something from you guys! When you stop learning, you're dead! Keep up the good work!
4:51, sick footage. And this video is further proof how much easier SM are than LM while bed fishing. A large mouth would have said screw it and started circling and then that game begins.
It is just guarding its nest. It knows it's not food. It just wants the intruder gone. This is great footage and there is a lot to learn from it, but I'm not a fan of fishing like this. It's like the angler is just toying with it knowing that the bass is hardwired to guard its nest. "Not this time...not this time....nope...not this time....bam!" It's kind of cheap.
Hey Matt: Excellent insights to what's going on with SMB suction/eject mouthing. And you are right: patience is a virtue. Thanks for sharing. I noticed a LMB swim by; do you see LMB/SMB neighbour beds side by side in your exploring?
I've found that white usually gets the most reaction from bedding bass, largemouth or smallies (in addition to the benefit of being easiest to see from above). Lots of times they barely mouth the baits enough to get in their mouths, and then I downsize to a 'Ned Rig' shroom head and white grub or something of that size. Almost panfish size...but that at least ensures it all gets in the mouth with little effort.
By that point, have to admit that it almost feels 'cheap' when you do hook them. Even though it might have taken many passes...it's like yanking someone out of their living room rather than tracking them down. Takes some of the sport out of it. ;-D
Great video as always guys, I would be more than happy to give you an excellent technique as well. I call it doubling up a bed, basically it's the same tactic you are doing but if there are two of you in the boat and you're taking turns on beds, cast your Bait in the bed and let him follow it out. At that same moment when he leaves, your buddy can throw his in right behind the fish and he automatically reacts and crushes it most of the time LOL. Good luck on the water guys be safe.
hey matt, I saw you mentioned flukes, off topic but in your opinion whats the best way to rig a fluke? Most of the time the lakes I fish around Toulmne County are clear. I'm a little new to the game, sorry if thats a dumb question, love the channel you guys are awesome.
nice new intro, quick question I understand that not to set hook too soon but with as long as you talk about taking have you ever had fish get conditioned to the same bait coming in from the same direction?
Why a leader of mono instead of fluro. I know you spoke of shock absorption. However if you're trying to drive the hook home why would you need shock absorption? I'm not trying to question you I'm just trying to gain a better understanding of why you chose mono.
I think because he's so close to the fish he would be able to drive the hook home even using mono. And because it's such a short line, a line with more shock absorption is more useful as to prevent line break. By the way, I use straight mono for all my lures in every situation and have no complains. Never had a bass break my line and because of that I'm always amazed when I see people regularly saying bass breaks their lines... Even smaller fish. For some seasons I used only 6lb test mono and used it even with regular sized spinnerbaits. Caught a 4.56lb and a 5lb bass (northern strain) on a spinnerbait and 6lb test with no problems... Here in Portugal many people fish for carp over 20lbs and barbel (a relative to the carp which has an incredible speed and power (more than carp)) over 10 lbs with mono line around 10 lbs or less with few break-offs... So, I'm surprised at the heavy lines you use in the USA, even if you have bass up to 20 lbs or more... Bass don't fight nearly as hard as carp or barbel of the same size... Yes, bass are usually in or around cover, but I think in the USA you use line that's too heavy... Currently I use 12lb Trilene Big Game mono for all my baits: jigs, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, big frogs, 6 to 8" swimbaits (Yes, I fished an 8" Huddleston for some months using that line with no problems)...
Burying the hook doesn't require much effort at all once the fish has fully consumed it. Once they're hooked though something needs to give and when using stout rods, light line, and light hooks, you'll have failure without a shock absorber.
This is what I requested! Thanks for the video man! I just got done smashing some smallies in Canada! Nice video! Wish I could've tried those jigs during the trip! Ha
digging the new intro! Would it be okay to pair a dobyns fury with a cardiff 401a for larger swimbaits? I noticed you guys only use calcuttas or curado 300e for them. Any reason behind it?
TacticalBassin appreciate the response. any reason that they don't last as long? I was under the impression they have similar guts and the only difference was the outside construction! in your opinion, is it worth the extra 100 dollars if I'm just getting into swimbaits?
Nick Grecco the fish aren't biting out of interest in the bait. They are biting out of their instinctual habit of protecting their bed. They aren't trying to eat the bait, just remove it from their bed and/or kill it.
Sammy Murphy yea that's true, I was thinking back to last summer when I caught a small Male on a bed, but I forgot I caught him on the first cast, and after that he wouldn't touch the bait, I guess I missed the whole point of the video lol
off subject but what is the swim jig that you guys had a big hand in. swim jig is one of my favorite ways to fish. and now that I am taking it more serious and paying attention to more things I am noticing the ones I have come through the water more sideways, so I am on the hunt for a better sj to use. thank you for your time.
Joe Gross Dirty Jigs Swim Head by Matt Allen. If you use the Tackle Warehouse Link in this video description TB gets credit for the purchase. Match the head size with the size of your bait and you won't experience any rolling. They swim great and have an excellent keeper and line tie angle.
I ended up seeing and watching the swim jig video he done after I posted that. the California swim jig is what I was referring to. but thank you and did not know about the part of using the link. thanks again.
Thanks so much Joe! We'd really appreciate you using any of our links when doing your tackle warehouse shopping, it makes all the difference for us! Also, we make it easy by including links to all the products in each video in that video's description.
Good idea, I've swang and missed early all my life and I know thats made some fish not bite or take wayyyyy to long to commit again.. Never even thought to let them eat it a couple times before wacking em! I'll give it a try! Thanks for the tip!
I used to go underwater with a net and a mask when I was a kid. Pretty disappointing some times, the mask magnefies a bit so what i thought was a 14" was in reality like 6". I've been fishing for now about 12 years (Im 17) and been taking your tips. Point being, thanks for yet another great video!
I fish lake St Clair for smallmouth when there on there beds there is 10 miles of a flat that has thousands of smallmouth on it you can caught 50 bass a day when the conditions are right lake St Clair is a awesome lake but the wind or rain causes the lake to get murky
Hi Matt I just watched your video on how you set your baitcaster tension When i try to set mine this loose I almost always have to apply thumb pressure the entire cast to avoid a backlash. Although on most of your casts I watch you sling it out there with no pressure at all. Am I just not noticing it ???
The effectiveness will vary with the quality of reel but yes, I thumb throughout the cast. Your reel still needs tension but with this method you're creating that tension yourself when its needed and removing it when needed instead of letting the reel apply it regardless of need.
Kris Kapps Shock absorption he said, he is fishing with braid as his main line so that mono leader will stretch as to not break his line or bend out his hook or etc.
Hey Matt my name is Noah I been watching all your videos for a while it's quite funny I found you trying to learn if I should use braid and leader and let me tell you my fishing experience changed tremendously sensitivity with Max endurance on the line went max over 50% less backlash for me at least mind you I don't get backlash a lot so my point is I take your advice very seriously with my fishing So I was wondering if you can give me some advice on a trip I am going on with my dad we're heading up to Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin haven't been there a lot heard the smallmouth bite is strong rn It's kind of early spring mid spring conditions fish are just moving up on them shallows what do you think is a good approach heading into this Father's Day trip and what do you think would be a key success in to having a good day on the water
Thats not true, you could of caught that fish with your first cast. Also you dont want the fish to swallow the bait ,which is often likley what kills the fish.
It doesn't take a good fisherman to catch smallmouth off of their nesting beds. They will bite ANYTHING ... you know those lures in your tackle box that never catch anything ? They will catch spawning smallmouth. In Canada it is illegal to target smallmouth during spawning season, and I agree with that policy. They defend their nests so vigorously for a reason. Sunfish, rock bass and other predators are constantly lurking for a chance to raid the nest, and once you pull the guardian away, they are suddenly given an opportunity to plunder. Shame on you ... It's just as if a robber threatened your home with the sole intent to have his waiting buddies plunder it when you attempted to defend it and give chase. Leave them alone when they're spawning !!!
We killed the smallies last Sunday on 1/2 once jig head with half A fire red trick worm Tonight I got just shy of 22 inch's went belly up for ten minutes. She was dead. I thought. bring her home I hear her start flopping bring her to my sink. Revive her for 2 hours ,threw her in a giant cooler ,brought her to Lake Dennison and she swam off. I think that was more reward ing than catching her. 6 1/2 ich shimano convergence pro max Abu Garcia 1/2 once bluegill strike king spinner bait Got pictures in my sink reviving her. Awesome night!!
I understand your audience ranges from entry level to professional fisherman. But is this something you really want to be teaching new anglers with less than a few years of bass fishing experience under their White belts. Frustration on a bedding fish's part can easily lead to 'just eliminate the nuisance' and now we have a gill or gut hooked Guardian by a 'less experienced angler' who is not able to sense that fish's 'behavioral processing'. Yes that fish was probably just presenting its 'nest-to-impress' and had no intention or interest in eating. While this method of fishing is 'very familiar to an experienced fisherman like you', it can be easily misinterpreted by a less experienced angler. Do you really want to put somebody with a learner's permit in the middle of a NASCAR pack when they have limited sense of what's going on around them. I have nothing but praise for this Channel and I often 'highly recommend' it to Newbies and experienced Anglers alike. But in my opinion this particular video should come with an intense warning for newbies and a few gut hookers who still haven't learned this lesson: The best way for that fish to get rid of a 'constant' annoyance is to swallow that Son of a B... Is there anyway I can talk you guys into a gut and gill hook removal video each year around pre-spawn? It happens to all of us and it would be a huge favor to a lot of fish while we hone our skills. Thanks guys
That's actually a fantastic video idea, thanks Bud! And you're right, this video can definitely be misinterpreted to be a "let em swallow it" video, which it isn't at all.
TacticalBassin it's actually a great video, bait and method for preventing deep hooking. But there are a lot of nuances that may be difficult for a novice. Would love to see a fish hook removal video. I know they're difficult to film, especially an actual removal. It's also a controversial subject, such as 'when to give up' and what do I do with that hook coming out of that eye ball.... I have a very expensive set of hook removal tools but that's not something someone's going to go out and buy if they don't mind the taste of bass. Or there's a nesting eagle nearby. Thanks Guys
When the fish guard its nest like that I would leave it alone. Let it reproduce and do its thing in peace without human interference. Once you take the fish out of the water and even if you let it go back it might not go back to guarding its nest since it is too fearful to go back to the same place. Even after a few minutes away from its nest could bring other fish to its nest to eat its eggs or hatchlings. This is why I don't fish spawning bass.
We can respect that. However, we continue to watch these fish during/after filming and most return to the nest in less than 30 seconds and some much more quickly than that. Its pretty amazing to see their tenacity.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, your guy's underwater videos are priceless. Thank you!
Thanks Brandon!
the graphics on this under water footage is insane! That fish got madder and madder as you threw it in more after him
Thanks for watching!
That big ol largemouth swam up and the smallie came out to meet her lol

Absolutely LOVE the underwater videos. Thanks for this.
Thanks Jon!
Excellent under water footage! Love to see what's happening under the water!
Thanks!
Another great video. Love these underwater shots showing how bass react to different baits. Keep it up guys.
Thanks Julian!
I look forward to more videos.Keep it up!

That's great footage! A bass hit my hero 5 the first time I ever used it on my 1st episode!
that's so awesome...and frustrating when it happens to you lol
Ha!
love the tips and the underwater images, cool vid
Thanks!
Excellent photography!!!!
Thanks!
great tip Matt! Thanks for the video and I can't wait to see more.
Thanks Ted!
love the underwater visual ..such a powerful fish,, they are beautiful
That's some nice underwater footage. So that's why they call it clear lake.
Ha! This was actually at Lake Berryessa. Clearlake is really murky, go figure
TacticalBassin no matter where it was filmed it was cool seeing the bass hammering the lure. It's tough to find water that clear here.
Here too! We've traveled a ton this Spring to find the right water to get the footage we were after
Love the new into keep up the good work 👍🏼
Thanks!
Awesome view!! These are awesome fish !
Thank you!
I wish San Diego had smallies! great vid!
Thank you John!
Awesome footage. Love these.
Thanks!
I like the new intro!
4:51, sick footage. And this video is further proof how much easier SM are than LM while bed fishing. A large mouth would have said screw it and started circling and then that game begins.
Ha! So true
that fish has to be so confused lol... cool footage! funny seeing her chase that largemouth off
Pretty neat to see them in their natural environment
here at Havasu, the male are guarding ~4-5inch babies...they can corral like rodeo pros!
Ha!
I thought see him chase the Largemouth off was cool also
It is just guarding its nest.
Love it man please keep it up Matt
Thanks Bud!
I love smallmouth
Love the underwater footage! Great tips too. 🇺🇸
Thanks!
Hey Matt: Excellent insights to what's going on with SMB suction/eject mouthing. And you are right: patience is a virtue. Thanks for sharing. I noticed a LMB swim by; do you see LMB/SMB neighbour beds side by side in your exploring?
Yeah they group up quite a bit on this particular lake
It looks like this was an enjoyable day at work
Not too bad!
hey matt gonna be on clear lake in 2 days... hope to see you and tim... any tips or advice for us this weekend
Stay safe, those baits will be tough this weekend! Not sure either of us will be out but if we are don't hesitate to stop us and say hi!
I like the new intro 👍🏼
Thanks!
TacticalBassin lol this is random but do u have any tips on Fishing clear, extremely grassy lakes?
topwater, flukes, swim jigs are all solid choices
TacticalBassin sweet thanks so much
I love this video!!
You guys should come down to San Diego and fish for some bass!
We do pretty regularly. You've got some great fisheries!
Totally agree with the downsizing mentaility
By that point, have to admit that it almost feels 'cheap' when you do hook them. Even though it might have taken many passes...it's like yanking someone out of their living room rather than tracking them down. Takes some of the sport out of it. ;-D
Amazing, y'all are awesome!
Thanks Bud!
Matt, can you make more Smallmouth videos? Cold clear water.
AJP Fishing well I mostly call the bed lol don't let anyone but me fish it, I am pretty good at bed fishing, get any big ones yet
Great tip Brother!
hey matt, I saw you mentioned flukes, off topic but in your opinion whats the best way to rig a fluke? Most of the time the lakes I fish around Toulmne County are clear. I'm a little new to the game, sorry if thats a dumb question, love the channel you guys are awesome.
Search "tacticalbassin fluke", we have a video explaining a really unique way to do it. I grew up in Tuolumne County, you've got some great lakes!
Nice vid
nice new intro, quick question I understand that not to set hook too soon but with as long as you talk about taking have you ever had fish get conditioned to the same bait coming in from the same direction?
Not at all. As long as they don't get "stung" its just a consistent annoyance that they'll continue to respond to.
That fish looked on the verge of going postal.
Why a leader of mono instead of fluro. I know you spoke of shock absorption. However if you're trying to drive the hook home why would you need shock absorption? I'm not trying to question you I'm just trying to gain a better understanding of why you chose mono.

This is what I requested! Thanks for the video man! I just got done smashing some smallies in Canada! Nice video! Wish I could've tried those jigs during the trip! Ha
Thanks for watching!
digging the new intro! Would it be okay to pair a dobyns fury with a cardiff 401a for larger swimbaits? I noticed you guys only use calcuttas or curado 300e for them. Any reason behind it?
They just last longer but there is nothing wrong with the Cardiff, it will pair up well.
TacticalBassin appreciate the response. any reason that they don't last as long? I was under the impression they have similar guts and the only difference was the outside construction! in your opinion, is it worth the extra 100 dollars if I'm just getting into swimbaits?
Mitchell Prout - FR795/Cardiff300, FR806/Cardiff400, DC806/Cutta400, DC807/Cutta400. Go with the FR806/Cardiff400.
Thanks for the Great footage guys, one question though aren't you afraid of the fish losing interest in the bait after the first few bites?
Nick Grecco the fish aren't biting out of interest in the bait. They are biting out of their instinctual habit of protecting their bed. They aren't trying to eat the bait, just remove it from their bed and/or kill it.

It will help!
You should have thrown top water!! lol... Btw what is the glue used to repair the huds??
Ha! Not sure on the hudd glue but superglue and mend it both work fine
New intro 👌🏽🔥👌🏽🔥
I used to go underwater with a net and a mask when I was a kid. Pretty disappointing some times, the mask magnefies a bit so what i thought was a 14" was in reality like 6". I've been fishing for now about 12 years (Im 17) and been taking your tips. Point being, thanks for yet another great video!
You can here the bait enter the water plain as day. That makes me wonder about my bait presentation.
I agree. I'm always worried about making a loud presentation on short casts.
I fish lake St Clair for smallmouth when there on there beds there is 10 miles of a flat that has thousands of smallmouth on it you can caught 50 bass a day when the conditions are right lake St Clair is a awesome lake but the wind or rain causes the lake to get murky
I've not seen hudd bugs on tackle warehouses in awhile like 6 months to a year
Bummer! In the video description we included a 2nd option that works equally well.
Yea I'd love to have some for river smallies
My favorite fish to catch.
Hi Matt I just watched your video on how you set your baitcaster tension When i try to set mine this loose I almost always have to apply thumb pressure the entire cast to avoid a backlash. Although on most of your casts I watch you sling it out there with no pressure at all. Am I just not noticing it ???
Dustin probably due to the fact he's using ultra expensive tackle.
Nick Harrell true didn't think about that aspect
The effectiveness will vary with the quality of reel but yes, I thumb throughout the cast. Your reel still needs tension but with this method you're creating that tension yourself when its needed and removing it when needed instead of letting the reel apply it regardless of need.
This dude is crazy to think its better to stomach hook a spawning fish only to have a better hook up . Absolutely crazy
Roof of the mouth as opposed to the lip... no one is talking about a stomach hook.
Too cool!!!
What's the reason for mono?? And not flurocarbon🤔
Kris Kapps Shock absorption he said, he is fishing with braid as his main line so that mono leader will stretch as to not break his line or bend out his hook or etc.
Stoked on Toads nailed it. Its all about shock absorption so they leader or hook do not fail.
Was this Berryessa?
Yes
you really had her revved up by the end
Ha!
I don't agree to let the fish swallow the bait. It's very easy to gut-hook a fish if you let the fish eat it for that long.
Matt - great vid. I love playing cat/mouse with these fish. But - isn't "She", a "he" ? Thought the males guard the bed.
You're absolutely right
Thats not true, you could of caught that fish with your first cast. Also you dont want the fish to swallow the bait ,which is often likley what kills the fish.
What a big large mouth that passed back there
Probably should have just set it on one of the first two casts but everyone wants to have the secret technique
No
Pretty light line, 20lb braid....🙄
Set the hook when you feel a bite. This is ridiculous
The one time he didn't eat the bait he hook set
Go figure. That's what makes the underwater angle so cool, we'd never have known that. Can't see it from the surface.
I would say that's a male not a female guarding the nest
You're correct
6 1/2 foot shimano Woops
That's awesome Bro! Way to save her!
This is stupid that fish could have been caught 100 time way to long set hook and get her in come on
a rigged Huddle Bug with a circle hook might get him the first time. my .02
cascasoldier do they still sell those?
As far as I know the rigged baits are discontinued
I assumed they were still available, love using mine for this specifically.
found one on-line tackle shop selling them but can't say how legit they are.
All the good huddleston baits other than the trout are gone. No more grass minnows, shad, or craw baits
I'm not a fan of targeting bedding fish. Sure a catch is fun but she is protecting our next years catch. Leave the bedding girls alone. IMHO.
You'll probably like this video a lot better... ua-cam.com/video/pKA3jGsY9oQ/v-deo.html
Thanks Guys
Lesson learned.......failed
I Leave bedding bass alone. When the bass hit their beds, I go trout fishin.
