    I see you finally Got your favorite armor after all these years. Congratulations. Back in 2016 you helped me in an interview for school about Japan and the topic of honor throughout history and we played Nioh back then. And back then you wanted the armor in the game and now you have it in real life. Got a 10 in my assignment so thank you and seriously congratulations, even though the crest isnt Big enough of course.

    I honestly think the worn look of the old one makes it that much cooler because we got to see it start off as clean and proper and have seen some of its wear.

      The armor would be comparable to something like munition grade armor, since it mostly uses 1.2mm(?) mild steel sheets for major components such as the cuirass. Anything else uses lesser.
      I'd say it'd make a nice costume armor?

    I kind of prefer the look of the old set. The new one gives the impression of fake armor (since it is painted, it gives the impression of plastic). It is just TOO clean. The slightly worn look of the old one just reinforces the impression of a real piece, similar to one you would see in a museum. But I suppose the new one will get the "proper" look eventually.

For the main body my front piece folds into the back piece and doesn’t line up right, and I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be like that and not line up right and I just need to tie it tight, but I don’t want to damage the hinge on the opposite side

    Good day to all. Do you think that an arm lock such as Waki-Gatame, a lock that works, but is very hard to successfully execute against a trained grappler, would be easier to successfully execute if the opponent was wearing armor such as this or any other medieval armor? On UA-cam there are videos talking about whether this technique works or not, however, no one talks about the historical context that lead to the development of locks such as Waki-Gatame , if such knowledge is known, such as the wareing of heavy battlefield armor for example. Thank you.

      what is your opinion on Metatron's armor?

    • @SengokuStudies
      @SengokuStudies Рік тому

      @@sengokusanada2690 I can only speak on my opinion on his Japanese armor, not European. Which I am guessing the focus of your question, but I wanted to make sure it was clear. Also, I have not seen every one of his videos on Japanese armor. It is Iron Mountain Armory. Which means, it is not all that authentic. Less so than they used to want to give the impression that it is. Traditional katchushi (armorers) is a very rare, and honestly dying, art. Having work done by one is very expensive. An authentic set of armor can easily run into the tens of thousands of dollars US, while maintenance and repair are also expensive if they require a professional. This means that their clientele is extremely limited. For someone without the budget who wants an armor that kind of approximates how traditional armor was, Iron Mountain Armory might be an acceptable settlement. Beyond that though, I do not own, nor have I handled, any of their products, so I cannot give too much of an opinion beyond a broad stroke. One thing, what Metatron has called a replica of 14th century armor appears not to be. There are not armors on their site that, based on the description, are actual “replicas” of 14th century armor. The closest they have are dō made of a small number of large plates, but are on the surface “decorated” to look like armor made from kozane that would have been in use in the 14th century. So perhaps it is a replica of an older piece trying to imitate the look of 14th century armor while using the fewer number of smaller plates. Which still does not make it a replica of 14th century armor itself. Overall, I will not bash someone for owning a set of their armor. Not everyone, including myself, can afford a full authentically made suit of Japanese armor. However, it is not completely authentic armor either. If someone feels it is “close enough” without having to sink tens of thousands of dollars into a set of armor, that is for them to decide.

Also, how mobile were legeonaries while in a swordfight if the held this shield?? I realy cannot find a way it can work

    I always have mixed opinion regarding Iron Mountain Armory. I apprecciate what they are doing but they are extremely far from being historically accurate, from the material point of view (use of lacquer, leather or silk) and the design they are using.
    One major thing about this armor being labelled as "Date armor";they were famous to wear the so called Yukinoshita or Sendai dō when Date Masamune got into power.
    This is a style more common in the Kinai region and did not belong to that northern style

    • @SamuraiJames
      @SamuraiJames Рік тому

      This is their gashira level Date clan. The higher tier Taisho version of Date clan has the sendai / yukinoshita do, art silk, and leather. I believe the gashira one here has leather for the suneate, haidate, and lining.
      Nearly no one works in lacquer (urushi) because it's poisonous. My understanding is that some like Marutake will call theirs lacquer but it's simply brushed on paint and a bit of fudging the translation; not actual urushi.
      IMA was working on a synthetic / altered urushi a couple years back. I haven't heard that it's available yet and I just ordered from them again about 6 months ago.

    • @lucanic4328
      @lucanic4328 Рік тому

      @@SamuraiJames thanks for pointing that out! I have checked that replica and I have to say they did a great job. I still believe that the masks is still a bit off compared to original designs and while I do understand that urushi is toxic, the finish is still a bit too plastic looking to me.
      I know some Japanese armorers that work with museum and the like who use real urushi, to bad they are focusing their job in 1 on 1 museum replicas and restoring old armor rather than taking commisions for customized armor. Maybe one day, we will see!

    • @SamuraiJames
      @SamuraiJames Рік тому +1

      @@lucanic4328 you're welcome. The plastic look is the gloss black finish. They have a dozen or more options and some are exclusive to the taisho level armors. One of mine is black uzumaki which has some texture to it like an unsanded urushi (which can be sanded glossy and smooth historically). I'm overdue for doing a detailed review of mine but I've got some videos wearing it. It's got many customizations that weren't listed before and I love it.
      There are folks like David Thatcher who work with urushi, make their own odoshi, and are incredibly good. I'd love to have some of his restored real armor but at the price of antique armor I wanna wear it too and that's just not proper thing to do haha.
      It's a price range thing too. I vaguely think I asked about getting real silk for my green yoroi and it was over $1,000 more. Custom plate colors was also possible at a bulk suit amount; I don't remember how many suits but way more than I can buy. I did get some unlisted customizations on my armor by asking, so if you're truly interested in something similar to what they have, maybe a different style mempo (they have a few), ask them. And tell them Samurai James sent you! I've bought from them for a decade and spoke to the owner many times.
