The best results I've had brushing on masking fluid (brush-wise) is~ using a synthetic mixed media brush, I apply a tiny bit of oil/wax onto the brush before I begin using it (any kind of essence oil, olive/coconut/etc- I was using burts bees thick hand cream on them until I ran out, it has wax and oils in it). I make sure to have it soak all the way into the brush by rubbing it in, then wipe off any excess onto my hands. Then I use the masking fluid, when it starts to dry up on the brush, I wash it with warm soapy water, and the masking fluid doesn't stick into the brushes from the oil, it comes off easier too. then dry the brush/es thoroughly and apply more oil when necessary ✌🏼️ (I hope this technique can help anyone who isn't aware of it)

I found these silicone tipped (I think they are used for pottery) shapers. They are like a paintbrush stick with silicone top instead of the brush. They have different shapes, so I can pinpoint with masking fluid or get a broader coverage. These have been great. I just rub the masking fluid off once I'm done using it and no more ruined brushes or having to use anything else. The oil is a good idea. This is a great tip though, about the oil in case I ever do need to use a brush with the frisket.

Thanks for the tip. Though I’ve learned that a warm water rinse of brushes isn’t ideal because there’s some flies involved in keeping the bristles in place, and warmer water can loosen the glue and brush hairs. Unless It’s completely crusty, cold water and soap works.

I use masking fluid sometimes. When I first started using it, one of the artists in my group recommended that I coat my brush bristles with dish soap and work it into the bristles really well. It does make clean-up a lot easier. One brand of masking fluid that I used was white in the bottle; but, as it dried it turned yellow and had a tendency to stain the Arches 140 lb cold press paper that I was using at the time. I use a different brand now and have no issues with the masking fluid staining my paper.

I heard the same thing about using soap also, but the person I heard from rubbed their brush on a bar of soap and it worked fine for them. I was using a masking fluid that went on blue and was supposed to dry clear, but it still seemed to stain the paper regardless. I think it was a Pebeo one.

Do not wash the tools or brushes you apply frisket with in the sink...or...do not pour the water you use to clean frisket off the tool down the drain...tends to clog the plumbing!

Masking fluid is a latex glue ,it does have a shelf life ,always test on a scrap piece of paper ,the same as your painting ,when the masking fluid goes off it does not come off the paper, many use heat to dry their painting with masking fluid ,another cause to stick, few say I have done it many times,it only takes one time to ruin many hours of work, trust me I know.

As always you help a lot, the bad thing is that all the supplies are not in sell in my country, I truly want to try it but how if I can't buy it. The support of being an artist in some countries is... sad. But thank you so much! Because I know that even with I'm always going to improve myself.

I would love to - but real time is difficult due to -well - time. Most paintings I do take 2 hours and the fox painting took 6 - which is really unrealistic for UA-cam (videos here do better when more short and concise info). Maybe in the future as a course though... 🤔

Really helpful, thank you! One tip i picked up a while ago is to dip/swirl your brush in that brush soap (forget the name, it's in a round tan container and is a solid soap) before you dip it into the masking fluid to preserve the brush (even a cheap brush). It seems to work for me, but I do notice when i remove the masking fluid it tears up my arches cold pressed and fabriano hot press papers. Even if i dont leave the mask on for more than a few hours. Maybe because the soap residue on the brush makes the masking fluid grab the paper more?

Again, another well made, informative video. Thank you, Carrie. You're always so thorough, I've seen several other videos about masking fluid and you're the first one to mention that masking fluid will temporarily effect the tooth of the paper. That's important to know. Thank you!

My question is.... what is your method for avoiding rough edges... say, while working on a detailed piece? Even when I use making fluid, I still find that my edges turn out jagged or just inaccurate. I'd love to be able to avoid that!

I think I'm doing something wrong: The paper I use is Canson XL cold press watercolor paper, (140 lb, so it's pretty thick and can take a LOT of water) but I keep ripping the paper when it comes to removing the masking fluid! I first used one from Winsor and Newton, then, thinking maybe it was the quality of the fluid, I went and bought one from Dr Ph Martins, but the paper STILL rips! I'm also removing the dry fluid super-gently with the tip of my finger, and I also made sure it dried completely before painting over it.
I really love painting with watercolor, and am kinda disappointed I can't use this particular medium for it. I heard some people add a little water to the masking fluid? Can anyone help me? I'd really appreciate some advice. :3
