John Petrucci is one of the most technically proficient guitarist but still plays with a ton of passion and emotion. BTW, just making sure you realized that the first big solo was a keyboard, the second was guitar.
I fucking love this song.
Awake might be their best album overall and this is a great song. Love the outro.
and then space dye vest
I fucking love the whole album
BEST... OUTRO... EVER!!!!!!
John Petrucci is a well known guitar “god” and well respected for his playing around the world by musicians. Check out his wiki page
'Who is this guy?' The master John Petrucci... from this same album, the song "Voices" has the most amazingly incredible guitar solo ever by Petrucci, and he's got a LOT of solos, riffs, etc. to choose from. You guys have reacted to a couple of DT songs in the past where you were impressed by his skills (As I Am and Breaking All Illusions), but those solos are only little tastes of what he can actually do.
There's not even ONE time I listen to Voices and don't get overwhelmed by the solo EVERY FUCKING TIME
"Voices" and "Scarred" are Petrucci at his best on guitar and lyric-writing. He was just on fire at that time.
One of my favorite solos of his! This was actual the first DT album i bought back in the 90s.
This whole album is fire, the last solo in Lie, Voices with the wah and the huge 1½ step opening bend, the Innocence Faded outro solo, JPs first 7 string tunes, Space Dye Vest....this album is mighty fine.
I think Awake was their magnum opus. Theres a song for everyone in that album
This song is wayyy underrated. Its a genuine masterpiece, even in Dream Theater's repertoire.
There are legendary guitarists and there is John Petrucci
4-Top guitarist
3-Guitar Legend (Jimmy Hendrix, Page, ...)
2-God
1-John Pettrucci
Totally agree
Its been said that when God heard John Petrucci play guitar he started playing Bass.
Amen
So, you are saying that John Myung is a God ;)
Y’all need to watch “In The Name Of God” Live At Budokan. The solo sections might make you wet your pants.
They already did the studio version awhile back so unlikely they get to it again for Live
0rthogonal If that’s the case then they shouldn’t have had to ask who JP was. Shameful.
@@bradsteed6833 yeah, I know. They have done 4 or 5 DT songs now. Seems like they don’t remember most. It’s hard to remember when you listen to so much I guess
If you’re interested in John Petrucci as a guitarist he actually just put a solo album out earlier this year, the title track “Terminal Velocity” is a good exhibition of skill
John Petrucci has influenced all shredders of the last 20 years. He has a signature amp and several signature guitar models. He has his own bourbon and his own beard oil, the dude is a legend he regularly shares the stage with satriani and vai. He is the best of the best.
He’s also one of the nicest and most humble people I’ve ever met.
This is the last greatest masterpiece with keyboardist Kevin Moore. Kevin was the heart of the Dream Theater sound, and the Legendary John Petrucci's solo is one of my favorite solos. This my favorite song from DT, and the album is one of the best Heavy Metal albums of all time.
Jordan Rudess is no slouch, but ya, Moore brought a whole different dimension to DT. He played the keyboard like he was a guitarist. Very unique.
The last part of Scarred and Space dye vest is one of the top moments in music history in my opinion. Well, all the Awake album really :)
I totally agree that Kevin was a MAJOR factor in the early sound...the guitars were more orchestral. I have to say that Petrucci is the driving force in the DT sound since Scenes though. I love the first couple records, I've been listening to Images since 1990, but I am a sucker for the Portnoy/Rudess era, especially Scenes, Six Degrees, Train, Octo, Systematic...those are my favorites and I get lost in them every time I listen. It's like a drug.
I absolutely agree, Kevin Moore was DT's heart.
I 100% agree with that, but it is so weird that Kevin Moore doesn't give a shit about DT. Portnoy has complained in the past that KM isn't open to experimentation and doesn't value others' inputs. So, in a sense, we're lucky that we got these albums to begin with.
DREAM THEATER - THE GLASS PRISON
I know you'll eventually get to it, but you need to see him on Acid Rain with Liquid Tension Experiment! It will blow your minds.
React to the live in LA 2008 version. You'll see John Petrucci in full shred glory!!
Yep was just thinking that
I saw this tour back in 94. It was out of this world!!
This is from my favorite album by them, awake, that album is so good. You guys should do more dream theater reacts!
More DT, Periphery, and Soilwork. Would love to see reaction to Distance Over Time, Black Clouds and Silver Linings, and Octavarium albums.
Grande interpretação do James LaBrie!!! Quase ninguém comentou!!!
There is a YT video of Petrucci reacting to people including some young kids playing DT/Petrucci songs and solos. Very impressive. 1 girl about 8 years old plays the solo for "Best of Times" which is one of Petrucci's best solos. Amazing! And yes, Petrucci is one of the elite guitarists in metal and incredibly humble as well.
Best DT album by far. The mood and atmosphere on this album is unmatched. If you want to see this band in its prime, check out Instrumedley from the liveshow at Budokan.
While Images and Words displayed the raw potential of DT, Awake displayed their best in songwriting
you guys really have been sleeping on this band
Vin and Sori. The same guitarist you watched on the Breaking All Illusions live video you did. Said that you would't like them in the studio because it was different seeing them live. John Petrucci is an amazing guitarist. He also wrote the lyrics to this track
By the way please react to Dream Theater “The Glass Prison “.
Yes! They would loooove it
@@KingXanadu Vin maybe, not the other one...
I have never been fan of that song of Dream Theater. I know that lots of people often recommend that song, so it must be just my difference of taste. I like the Awake album. I think that time their songs were better constructed and not that much show off of their skills. Sure there are those virtuosity parts, but they fit often better to songs. They have a lot of great songs after that of course. Scene from the Memory is great album and there are lots of great songs on all their albums and Petrucci has so many great solos with lots of emotion.
If you guys haven’t yet, The Glass Prison by DT is a must listen . Your necks would seize up from the head banging
I wish I could go back and listen to this song again for the first time...
It's fun to see how all these react dream theater videos come out. I can only say welcome and wake up. better late than never.
I’m one of the fans really liking Space Dye Vest, but this is how you end and album!
John Petrucci is the God of Gods. He literally has "everything" you want to hear. He can be the darkest, he can be the most romantic, he can be the heaviest, he can be the softest. "Trial of Tears" has my favorite John Petrucci solo ever and I believe that is the most underrated guitar solo ever. I'm a Dream Theater nerd, I could play Scarred solo back then but now I have some nerve problems in my arms, so my hands got way weaker, I can't play like I did 2-3 years ago. It's a painful feeling when you hear your favorite guitar player ever and you can't play like him anymore. So that's the reason I've been playing just "Repentance" by Dream Theater since that accident happened, which is ridiciliously an amazing song. You should listen to in under your "Christians listening to X" series.
"Octavarium" and "A Change of Seasons" are their biggest musical masterpieces, both songs are like most artsy cinemas ever. I'm sure people are going to suggest some highly popular songs like "Pull Me Under", "Spirit Carries On", "As I Am" bla bla, just don't care about them. Dream Theater is not that easy. They are the same dumb people suggest under every channel the same Opeth songs from Ghost Reveries album and Deliverance.
Petrucci is one of the best, and to be honest, should not be mentioned in the same sentence as Kirk Hammet!!! Technically and creatively, they are on different planets.
Kirk is more influential and iconic even if he is inferior technically.
@@mohameddarwish5272 Iconic is an opinion. Sure hes more influential because of the popularity level of his band pfft
Come on Kirk is an icon of metal that’s hardly an opinion
A lot of iconic guitar players are inferior to John that does not affect their status
Nearly every guitarist pale in comparison to john and vai technique wise
@@mohameddarwish5272 True, mainly because Metallica are a bigger band
A big part of the popularity of Metallica is Kirk u can’t down play him because he is in Metallica give the man the credit he deserves
I was 20 when Awake came out and my jaws drops to the floor when heard this song. I&W was my first time listen of DT in year before in 1992.
John Petrucci is an incredible guitarist and absolutely recognized as such. There's so many Dream Theater songs that are amazing.
The Glass Prison is brilliant
All of Scenes From a Memory is brilliant, but really should be experienced as a whole (Scene Three: II. Fatal Tragedy has probably my favorite solo of his, but Scene 4: Beyond This Life is probably my fav song of the album)
Count of Tuscany is beautiful
The Great Debate is sure to get you talking, and is just a badass song
It's always nice when people get the credit they deserve. So many brilliant bands never get so lucky.
I Love this entire album
The core of the band met at Berkeley school of music they are all very talented they are still playing they have a new keyboard player snd drummer now but are still incredible
Dream Theatre - The Glass Prison!
They would love this song
Good choice
Why the Glass Prison.....these guys can’t relate to complicated music??
Yes Vin, John Petrucci has been a guitar virtuoso since Dream Theater came out in the late 80's. Petrucci is a Top 5 guitarist of all-time in my opinion. He's better than Dimebag. He's better than Mustaine, and he's better than Zakk Wylde. it's a shame that more people don't give Petrucci the credit he deserves. He's also one of the best riff writers of all-time as well.
If you want your mind completely blown, check out "Instrumedley" from the Live at Budokan dvd.
I've probably seen Instrumedley at least 50 times. I love how it's on a standard tuned 6 string, but yet the whole song is based on Dance of Eternity, which is on a 7 string. He does some clever trickery like the inverted 5th chord trick to pull it off. Some MIGHTY PRECISION playing that night, still my all time favorite DT show.
My nephew started playing guitar at the age of 5. By the age of 16 he was teaching guitar and had learnt how to play this whole CD from DT AWAKE. He did it as a challange. He was determined to do it and he did.
I would love to see a review for "Best of times", I think John Petrucci's solo at the end of that song is one of the best solos I've ever heard.
You can listen to their albums start to finish. Great ones!
Can't wait for Vin and Sorry to react to Metropolis Pt.1 The Miracle and the Sleeper.
There are many, many amazing solos by John:
Best of times
Voices
As I am
Lines in the sand
Too many to mention..
John Petrucci is a total legend in the guitar/music world. He is truly on another level and is #1 on my list of best guitarists.
John Petrucci is the reason for so many great players today. Ask anybody respected guitar player about him and you'll get the answer. He's a guitar god! Also, THE GLASS PRISON!!! React to that like other are saying, it's my number 1 song by them (and I've heard all their stuff many times).
Best Dream Theater album hands down
The album this is from, Awake, was my number one album for 10+ years. The whole thing is amazing from every standpoint. I still get emotional listening to it and I've heard it a million times.
Dream Theater - The best of times
Kevin Moore is just the greatest, there was such emotion in DT's music back then. Alas,..
KevMo and Portnoy were the soul of DT. I&W and Awake were probably DTs best albums.
IMO Awake has JLB’s best vocals by far.
The Awake album was Derek Sherinian.
@@fishguru73 wrong
@@davidviteris Oh I see. Kevin left during the recording of the awake album and then Derek joined the band.
Petrucci is an absolute legend. Chops, Tone, he is the complete package when it comes to shredders. My favorite lead guitarist, hands down.
Count of Tuscany by them is the Best one ever❤️
My favorite song EVER!!
Awake. My second favorite DT album.
Oddly, this song was left off the original cassette.
One of my favorite Dream Theater songs. Awesome that someone chose this one.
I’m so glad you’re doing Dream Theater as they are my favorite band. Please do The Mirror/ Lie off of the same album. You’ll love it
Na boa essa música é a melhor desse álbum, ouvi lá depois de 25 anos é de arrepiar até hoje
Most guitarists, especially any remotely related to harder music, knows who Petrucci is and just how insane he is. I’ve loved his playing since the early 90s and he’s been amazing me since then.
Someone should pay to have them react to A Change of Seasons...lol. At least they’d get their money’s worth.
Sorry, I can't even come close to playing a Petrucci solo.
I have seen Dream Theater 7 different tours, though :)
the guy who play keyboards on this is kevin moore. awake was his last album with dream theater. he is now a doctor in minot, north dakota. in Psychiatry.
www.trinityhealth.org/providers/kevin-moore/
One of the best songs on one of the best DT albums. James LaBrie killed it on vocals
They are one of the greatest Dream theater🤘
Love dt they are brilliant
Always watch dream theater live videos.
Mikes alcoholism lyrics are so damn powerful.
DT are the MASTERS!!!🙏🏻🤟🏻
John Petrucci has been on a number of Joe Satriani's G3 tours. He's definitely well established in the pantheon of guitar gods.
You are right. John Petruchi is in the League of Those Major Influential Musicians that become guru for generations. To repeat his solos amd to cober his work you need to be on extra level on all technical skills and music knowledge.
I visited Dream Theater live show in Moscow when they visited our city. So I saw THAT with my own eyes and heard through my own ears )
Be careful with an award for solo cover. At least THIS guy here did pretty fine and I think he already could take away your prize ) ua-cam.com/video/TCKYkAgfHdI/v-deo.html
I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is the BEST dream theater album.
I thought you already knew about Petrucci , I mean it's been 2 years of Metal reactions, he is one of the best all time guitarist
The album that was my intro to Dream Theater when it came out and still one of my favorite!
Top 5 John Petrucci Solos
1. Thys Dying Soul
2. The Glass of Prison
3. Beyond this life
4. The Count of Touscany
5. Breaking all ilussions
This song brings back memories. Haven’t heard this one in about 20 years. I particularly like the instrumental of this album “Awake”
Liked and subbed. Awesome song by an awesome band!
Nice reaction !!! The answer to your question on the guitar player..... Mr. John Petrucci is an Institution in the guitar world.... from Guitars, to Amplifiers, and everything in between down to picks.... with Many Signature series !!!! Happy New Year
"He's probably some virtuoso guitarist who is in somebody's top 3 list or something like that." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I can't even.
I was lucky to see this band in 97-98 in nyc. The guitarist is really good. I loved his old Ibanez mask guitars.
Aahh yes Petrucci, the last guitar God of the 90's, the Overlord of prog shred, this dude is the reason most new prog bands and even many metal bands sound the way they do. Haken, Periphery, caligula's horse, Andy James, the list just never ends
I have no money to give you but what I can give is some recommendations that will enrich your life (all by Dream Theater):
1. The spirit carries on
2. Octavarium
3. Count of Tuscany
4. Six degrees of inner turbulence
5. Through her eyes
Cheers
John Petrucci has won best Progressive Rock/ Metal guitarist for several years now.
He is considered the Best of the Best.
I have seen him live twice and he is an Amazing Musician.
Dream Theater are also Amazing. Because they come under the Progressive Rock/Metal genre, they are not known as well as more popular metal acts.
Their music is not easy listening as it is seriously complex music but it is Awesome when you start to get it.
John does not get lucky, he has many Amazing solos and riffs. Not to mention many albums(with Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment and Solo) under his belt.
All original members of Dream Theater, trained at Berkeley Academy of Music so are all Anazing musicians.
They have been around since the early 90’s.
Oh yeah, Kevin Moore's era Dream Theater is the real DT for me. They used to write songs back then...
He's the definition of a Virtuoso, as is all of the band
John Petrucci is friggin incredible, and this was probably one of the easier rifts. His accuracy, timing and knowledge of music is beyond anyone else I know of. I've been playing for nearly 50 years, and Petrucci is nearly impossible to copy. Very few can come close to his knowledge of what he's doing. Some are accurate, some are fast, some are both, but I still haven't seen anyone who has those qualities AND the musical technique that he has. Enjoy...!
Love Dream Theater but even more than that I love the Type O shirt Sori!!!💚
Awake is by far their best album. The atmosphere of the whole album is right down my alley.
I’m glad you liked this song. Awake is my favorite DT album of all time. John Petrucci is a legend in the guitar community, you need to look him up more.
Please do The Glass Prison by Dream Theater
Oh Vin. I’ve been telling you about DT and Petrucci literally since you guys started this channel. And I’m the one who requested Breaking All Illusions if you recall, so you can enjoy Petrucci and DT’s mastery.
I won’t repeat how legendary Petrucci is, everyone else in the comments made that abundantly clear. Here’s to more DT reacts and Happy New Year to you both and the whole V&S familia. ❤️
this guys no read and no put atention to the comments....Christians.... ajajajaja all the christians are same
24:24 Did you mean “Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence”? 😅 So, you definately should react to the album; a concept album by Dream Theater.
Check out the song "lie" by them for a really ferocious solo.
Agreed! Another freaking great solo on this album. The whole album is incredible. 25 years later, still stands up as maybe their best album.
Love the that u are wearing type o negative
Petrucci is a great guitarrist yeah! but the keyboard solo and the outro are incredible too. Kevin Moore is a genius.
Great song choice. This song actually got my dad into Dream Theater. I was blaring it one day back in the 90's. He came home, overheard it, and has been a fan ever since. (He was an old Yes fan) About the lyrics...John Petrucci wrote them. According to his wife (on the DT message boards) he is a Christian. Many of his lyrics are spiritual and reflect this
Awesome 🎵
You need to check out Mirror and Lie off this same album!!
Dream Theater actually does a live cover of the whole Master of Puppets album.
And could probably do it blindfolded lol
And dark side and number of the beast
I was at the show in NYC when they covered the entirety of MoP. At times it felt like the guys were almost getting bored at how simple it was for them to play!
DT is one of the best groups ever period !
SDOIT
Best album ever
That intro is so smooth.
John Petrucci is a practicing Catholic. Figured I'd throw that bone over your way to maybe help with the lyrical interpretation. There's a line earlier in this album on a different song that goes "The faithful live, awake. The rest remain misled...." - which Petrucci also wrote the lyrics for. Hope some of this info helps.
He is a legend.
JP is in the god tier, no kidding, not only speaking about his technical proficiency but also his melody and chord progression composition side, together with his band partner, Jordan Rudess, they can built huge crescendos in their songs like classical music composers. You guys should check a song named "The best of times" and regarding his solo, it so sad that you can literally cry listening to it
John Petrucci is such well-known guitar virtuoso, that there are even lots of memes about it on the Internet about his playing speed.
5:47 Elastic Rubber Daves
Awake album is the most darker album from entire discography. Such a beatiful album.
Happy new year guys!!!! From Barcelona.. we are in 2021 already!!! Great review as always.. .you rock!
PS ... 2021 for now is the same old shit!!! ahahaha
