My husband lays the fruit in one layer in the rock and uses the flame thrower (for burning weeds around our property) to burn off the spines. Works great!
Thank you so much for posting this method. I have been burning the stickers off & it’s so time consuming vs just washing & tossing them around in a colander. Appreciate it!!
I moved to Nevada to a house with a huge Prickly pear cactus plant, lots of pears on them and made the mistake of taking it off the cactus bear handed...Duhhh, learned my lesson and thank you for the video that has helped me so I can now harvest a few. :)) I grew up in Nevada and remember these. Thanks again!
Thank so much for posting this. I have a cactus tree in my backyard that I was planning to chop down, but my 80 yr dad fell in love with the prickly pear. We’ve been pricked by these bad boys and didn’t know how to clean them.
Its currently 5/2020 & I am discovering that the ones that are still on the pods after close to a year & even fallen off after making it through the winter - are the sweetest & the best ones and actually taste a little like strawberries....I will be deliberately leaving many on the pods this year & not harvesting them in the summer to allow them to reach this state of pure deliciousness!!...I currently get the needles off by putting them in a metal bowl & dousing them wt rubbing alcohol & lighting it on fire and mixing them around wt my tongs so they all get the flame. Then I transfer them into a bucket & scrub them with a plastic brush. Using this method I may get pricked once or twice & its NBD at all....I cut them in half & juice manually using a Fine Pool Vaccum Net to strain them = works
i bought a house recently an these are in the garden--i am just a bit eh..anxious--what if one or some of these tiny spines end up in your stomach?? I know what they do to my hands...lol...
I'd be more concerned about getting poked in the mouth vs winding up in your stomach... I've made over 2 gallons of jelly this summer using this method without any issues. If you want to be *extra* sure, you can strain the juice through cheese cloth like some of the other comments suggest and you should be fine.
thanks, i saw one where a lady used a dishwashing brush in addition to your method, to scrub off spines, which i found a good idea. Just did some this afternoon, seems to work...thanks for the video
My grandmother said they would bunch up sage leaves and brush off the thorns before picking them I add an extra step and hold them over a small flame for a few seconds until the thorn area gets black. Works well.
Waste of water. Burn off glocids (1 billion tiny thorns each), cut in half, boil, mash (or use processor), strain, save juice (freeze in blocks, ice cubes, or in jars in frig) to use later.
You really should find a better way of doing this. If you live in the Southwest, then you know we have been in a severe drought for the past 10 plus years. This is a complete waste of water.

Hey fyi, when you talk about natives do, use present tense. We still exist, and we still eat these ✌🏽
Oh, so you're saying that you walk around with a woven basket harvesting them and going to a river to wash the spines off?
@@iiSup3rior Yes. We still do. We still basket weave with our aunties and grandmothers. We still go gathering traditional foods together.
Jesse Cruz why fix what isnt broken
He said natives, not indians
You ain't native bitch
Heading to harvest eight now. I use a torch to burn the spines, prior to picking.
Thank you for sharing. Just picked some up for the first time in our very own backyard. Can’t wait to taste them
glad I came across your vid... This is a great technique without burning the fruits !
Thank you. The tastiest fruit in the world in my opinion (and mango)
Wow, did not anticipate the spines would come off so easy. I'll have to try it.

I wouldn't want to be the person cleaning out the sink or that strainer afterwards!
Thank you so much for the video. huh, I didn't know. so legend has it that I was still picking spines of my fingers 10 years later.....
I've been scorching them over my gas stove. This works much better!
You can also put them in Icy water for the cleaning
Why are you are not using the skin? Very important question for me.
I usially use torch to remove thorns. Thx for your video!
Yes
Burning off
Torch!
We are going to mix with watermelon for homemade juice!!!! Natural and right out of the yard!!!!
Blend the fruit with aleo verde
I just cut in half even with spines and boil all them until soft and then squeeze in a cloth sack... done...
Do you sell this plant? Can I buy some?
i love to eat this fruits, it's delicious

Did all of the glochids come off with that method, too? Any missed glochids can cause great discomfort and sometime death if consumed.
Prove it
Thanks bro 😎

Looks very good 🙋
Super😍👌
Is the green part padded part of the plant edible?
Yes it is. I have a video on my channel showing the process of cleaning and cooking the pad.
No he lies
How many days does it take to fruit?
At least 5
you just have to fill the bucket with water and let them for two or three min and then eat them
Peel them and eat them or eat the skin with it also?
give it a twist and it will pull right off
That's what she said
For all the jojo fans: the prickly pear looks like a rokakaka
Hi
these are diloshis
Burning the spines off is best
