Yes but in South Africa you can be both…. Just that you don’t sit with your ‘register’ class the whole day but everything that has to do with your class you deal with it. All the admin. Reports. Profiles. Attendance… it’s yours. Even though you still teach other classes. Except for foundation phase teachers. Foundation phase teachers are “home room” teachers for real because you stay with the same kids the whole day and life and teach them all the subjects.
This was so good friend. Definitely will help a lot of people. Eish!!! Kgosi where is the English 😂. Yess please listen to Emily don’t take any job offers from Training centers.
Thank you so much for this! I'm starting my homeroom position next month, first time and straight into the deepend haha but I'm so excited and ready for the experience. Knew what ny role would comprise of but this gave me a better idea of what to expect, thanks Emily and Kgosi😊
Ahhy ngeke Kgoss I hear you staying with kids full time like that is cute and all but I can imagine doing it full time like that can be tricky 🥲 headache.
This sounds like a great work-life balance, especially doing part-time and leaving at lunch. I'd hate to hang around until 5 and just watch time pass...
Yes Kgoss is right in primary hey tell you about their crushes and I really prefer that over kindergarten level😂😂😂 here in SA I have mostly worked with Grade 7s. The lowest I’ve ever done is Grade 5. The kids andizi.
I used to think I’d enjoy teaching higher grades but after being in a primary school I realize that the little ones have my heart ❤️. They’re my favorite 😊.
Thank you for the video. For someone who has no teaching experience, do you think getting a TEFL online (+R200) is okay, or should one invest in a TEFL that has teaching practice (+R5000) as well. Or are they pretty much the same.
The homeroom teacher is looking after the students for the whole day, but they are not always in the same room as the students. I worked as an ESL teacher for Chinese public schools. Sometimes the homeroom teacher would stay at their desk during my class. They would be doing other work such as grading papers or prepping lessons. They would also handle behaviour during the lesson. This can be a bit of a shock for the ESL teacher when they are in the flow of teaching and the homeroom teacher suddenly snaps at a naughty student. Occasionally, the homeroom will pay attention to your class, take notes and ask questions. However, more often, the homeroom teacher will leave the room while the ESL teacher or other special subject teacher is working. They might go to the office to do photocopying or some other duties leaving you to do your thing.
Hey. Yes you do. I didn’t do Science. I’m teaching a kindergarten class so the science isn’t complicated. Is just simple things like color, senses, weather etc. But I think for higher grade levels in primary school and higher school then it’ll matter
After school programs for core subjects has been banned by the education department. So if you’re working at a training center teaching English to especially kindergarten and primary school kids it’s actually illegal. There’s no security in training centers at the moment. Most of them had to shut down, even the big ones. Unless you’re teaching a non core curriculum subject.
Hey Emily, thank you for this video. It's very informative ❤ you guys are the best! May you kindly check your Instagram message requests when you get time please
I have worked in a private school and it feels like a home room because you deal with parents on the annoyance level. I fared it on top of crazy admin. I think I am more on the ESL side.🫣 I want to do my work and go home.
Basically in South African terms Homeroom teacher is Class teacher. ESL teacher is a subject teacher.
🤣🤣🤣 I spoke too soon
Yes ma’am
😅😅😅

Class Teacher vs. Subject Teacher😂
It’s the colour coordination for me😍

If you have other things to do in the afternoons then it works out but it also means you get paid a half day salary
Color coordination 💚

Depends on how you want to set yourself up. I didn’t have any formal teaching experience, just did an online TEFL for R500 and I was okay.
@@emilyboitumelo Thank you for your response ❤️
Please help tell why centres are not good
I enjoyed this video.
So since homeroom teacher is not moving from the class and you are ESL teacher, how do you then teach in front of this homeroom teacher?
The homeroom teacher is looking after the students for the whole day, but they are not always in the same room as the students. I worked as an ESL teacher for Chinese public schools. Hi Emily, did pioneer and beyond link you up with Haida HR. Is it a good company?
Hi, no. I was linked with SDE Beijing.
Hey Emily, what if you have never done mathematics and science subjects/ modules, do you still qualify to be a homeroom teacher?
Hey. Yes you do. I didn’t do Science. I’m teaching a kindergarten class so the science isn’t complicated. Is just simple things like color, senses, weather etc.

Enjoyed the video
Thank you for watching
Hi Emily, I just want to know what's wrong with working in a training centre and what rules are implemented recently regarding that?
After school programs for core subjects has been banned by the education department. Most of them had to shut down, even the big ones. Unless you’re teaching a non core curriculum subject.
How many hours do you stay with the kids as an Homeroom ?
You’re in charge for at least half of the day. Sometimes you’ll be in the classroom even when you’re not the one teaching.
Why is the school day until 5?
Kids leave earlier but some stay for after school classes. 5 is just the teachers knockoff time
My Doro looks so good 😅
What about me? 🤣😢
@Emily Boitumelo lol girl you know you always look good
Kgosi🎉
Kgosi 👋
Grandparents is another thing in China😔
Hey Emily, thank you for this video. It's very informative ❤ you guys are the best! May you kindly check your Instagram message requests when you get time please
Hi. Please resend your message or email me.
I have worked in a private school and it feels like a home room because you deal with parents on the annoyance level. I fared it on top of crazy admin. I think I am more on the ESL side.🫣 I want to do my work and go home.
Doing what you need to do and going home definitely saves you from a lot of things.
I understand why Emily felt like that in the previous job but I don’t think I would mind having that much time. I think I have become slightly lazy 🫣
🤣🤣 it gets boring but it was also kinda fun 😅.
