    Really glad to see someone posting repair videos of these 1st gen Shadows. This may be super helpful in the coming days as I am having clutch issues. Many thanks from Oklahoma.

    Good job1 and a good time invested on it. Its cool see your videos about those lengendary bikes, mine, is an VT800 from 1988,so these vids are very interesting to me. Greetings from Spain!

      The VT800 is a nice bike. I think that they only made them one year. I haven't seen any over here in the US yet. Thanks for watching from Spain. Have a good one and stay safe.

      @@wonkster1970 Yes it is! is a great runner. I modified mine, with several changes, Hypercharger, advanced controls, changed the triple tree stock for an VT600 from same year (wich is more fine for the look i want) lowering springs with a pair of Progressive 11" inches, and rebuild the carbs and electric wires, at same time, put a 150/80/15 tire in the back wheel. the plates are re-alocated in the left side of the bike, (in Spain must be in the complete back side of the bike under the rear fender) and now i changed the handlebar stcok for a Z-bar wich is perfect for these old bikes in my opinion. Next steps, paint the coplete bike, engine, frame, fenders,tank etc, in absolute black matt. So, im busy with this one!! lol! Take care and drive safe!!

    I don't see anything in your video about the clutch springs. Where are they and how do you replace them?

      There are spring washers that act as clutch springs. They are located behind the nut that holds the clutch assembly on. I'm not sure if they are available anymore.

    Thanks for the tutorial.
    Do you think it's necessary to soak the clutch/friction plates in oil prior to installation, or should I just let the bike idle for a while before using the clutch?

    • @wonkster1970
      @wonkster1970  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for watching. I read somewhere that it is recommended to let the friction plates soak in oil overnight. The clutch basket turns while the engine is running. So I would think that the oil would sling off instead of soaking in.

    The black Honda in the beginning of the video, is that a shadow as well? and if it is how did you shorten the back seat so it doesn't have the high back rest on it

      The black bike is an 84 Shadow 500. I found the seat on Ebay and the shorter crossbar somewhere else online.

    Trying to remove 27mm nut with socket wrench fails due to pistons turning as I apply force to remove nut? How did you stop clutch from turning to remove nut?

    • @wonkster1970
      @wonkster1970  4 місяці тому +1

      Put the bike in 6th gear and hold down on the rear brake lever while removing the nut. I used an impact gun to remove mine. I held the rear brake to tighten it.

      @@wonkster1970 Yes.. oh and when you put your new plates in... did your 2nd and 3rd friction plates have a different groove pattern? Apparently in the manual it says this and checking my OEM fiction plates they are different? Now that I've placed these after markets in I didn't check to see if any were different?
      Never mind luckily I took a video of my new ones and nope none are different.

      @RogerDiotte there there were a couple of the oem friction plates that were different. The replacement ones are all the same. I never had an issue.

      Nope. You do not have to remove the clutch line.

      I'll have to look into that. I think they changed the engine in 86.
