World's ice is melting faster than ever

  • As global temperatures increase, the melting of the massive ice sheets that blanket Antarctica and Greenland has accelerated, making a significant contribution to sea-level rise. In total, Earth is losing around a trillion tonnes of ice each year - which is not being replenished.

    It's so sad, the science and data prove the demise, yet there are still so many who outright deny it, not based on facts, but based on their 'feelings'. With so many out there that don't give a rats ass, I feel this will harm not only humans, but so many species.
    Still, thanks for telling the truth.

      Why should anyone care when we won't be alive to deal with the consequences. Humans are selfish by nature, capitalism and this system has only brought a means to exploit our selfishness to extreme levels at the cost of humanity's future and we're gonna be smiling all the way to the end.

      Latest data says the ice has increased so which scientists are lieing, when you look into it deeply you'll see all those that agree its melting are funded by the same groups like black rock and vanguard, these are the groups the medical, banking, media etc industries, always follow the money, we're cleaner now than we have been for the last 200 years where every home burnt fuel to cook and heat, c0² is plant food, if you want more shade and cleaner air plant more fruit ✌️❤️🙂 trees

    What if all the ice goes into the sea?

  • @OldScientist
    @OldScientist 10 місяців тому +8

    Antarctic ice sheet mass loss is about 90 Gt/yr (Otosaka et al, 2023). It's total mass is 24 million Gt, so it loses less than 0.0004% of its mass annually. It contributes 0.36mm to sea-level rise per year (that's pitiful). At the current rate it will take well over ¼ million years to melt, but we are due for two more glacial periods in that time. The ice is here to stay.

      "Antarctic ice sheet mass loss is about 90 Gt/yr (Otosaka et al, 2023)." Net ice mass loss for both Greenland and Antarctica are now happening ~7 times faster than in the 1990s, as I have pointed out to you in one of my longer replies to another post of yours. We've already locked in ~10 feet of eventual sea level rise due to current CO2 levels, and although that may take 150 years, our disruption of climate, ecosystems, species, and the chemical balance of the planet is causing damage that will keep taking bigger and bigger bites out of our time, energy, wallets, and freedoms--unless and until we bring modern civilization in line with the laws of nature.

    • @OldScientist
      @OldScientist 8 місяців тому +2

      @karlwheatley1244 Seven times nearly nothing is still nearly nothing. Antarctic ice sheet mass loss 3 decades ago (1992-1997) was approx. 70Gt/yr (Otosaka et al, 2023). I've got no idea where you're getting "seven times" from as 1992-2020 annual loss was 90Gt/yr, but let's go with it for the sake of argument. The Antarctic ice sheet's total mass is 24,380,000 Gt (24380000000000000 tons). 7x70=490Gt/yr, so it loses approx 0.002% of its mass annually. I think we can round that down to zero.
      There's a bit of a problem with the accelerating ice loss in Antarctica idea. It's not accelerating. If you want to dig down to the actual data, that is. Just so we're clear, I'm referring to the paper entitled "Mass balance of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets from 1992 to 2020" by Otosaka et al, 2023. Can I direct you to table 2, and the text below it?
      If we include the APIS in "continental" (although I wouldn't) there's no pattern with a slight loss overall - neglible. EAIS, by far the larger of the continent's ice caps, both by surface and volume, hasn't lost mass. It has gained mass, but again it's neglible. So that leaves us with WAIS. It's only WAIS that's driving the mass loss from Antarctica, and you can see that from the Figure 4 graph. Figure 4 and Table 2 show there is a step up in mass loss around 2007. You might want to call that an acceleration. However there's a deceleration from 2017 or at least a noticeable reduction in the rate of annual ice mass loss for the period 2017-2020 when compared to 2012-2016.
      So accelerating then decelerating. The Antarctic Ice sheet is massive and it's never going to melt on the timescale of human civilisation.
      Coming back to what we know though about Antarctica, you doomster cult followers have got a problem with Antarctica, haven't you? It's ice shelves are expanding by mass and volume, plus the continent has cooled very significantly in the past 40 years. But a small part (WAIS) of the ice cap is losing mass. Something is making the WAIS melt it would appear, and it cannot be the increasingly colder climate.
      Maybe geothermal activity? I don't know, but the climate has to warm for the ice to melt significantly and it isn't.

    Restoring the Polar Caps.
    If we make new freight Containers of 12x12x12, they have a Volume of 1728 m³ each (equal to 1728000 Liters of Water). If you place 1000 of these new Containers in the colder areas of the polar ice caps and fill them with seawater. Can Nature freeze these containers filled with seawater within a few hours? This process can therefore generate approximately 1728,000,000 kilos of ice every Day. On an annual basis this is 365 x 1728 000 000 and equals 630 720 000 000 Kilos of ice. In other words, 631 Gigatons of Ice.
    More than the annual ice loss.
    The melting ice water that flows into the ocean must therefore be sealed and collected, and then frozen again. Otherwise, the aforementioned is 'carrying water to the sea'.
    SINCERELY,
    LUV YOU !

      A cheaper way is to automatically spray Seawater in the colder areas, thus generating more gigatons of ice than the annual ice loss. And Shape Icebergs as you wish.

      There is a difference in increase of ice thickness and rate of increase of thickness. When the latter decreases, it could also be attributed to climate change, even though the ice becomes thicker. This is the case in many areas in antarctica, as far as I know. The simple fact that some regions still get colder/more icy does not at all disprove climate change. It is called >>climate

    Unfortunately this has happened quite often in Earth history, and, in multiple times throughout human history.
    For reasons beyond human activity, the Earth alters in temperature. Many times its been very low on polar ice caps and many times its been a literal ice age. We just luckily, have had a spell of 13,000ish years of relative calm with the previous changing and quite rapid fluctuations at times in history

    How to overwork your videos: 1. cut away the pauses between the sentences of the speaker. 2. play some dramatic music (in this case I'm grateful you didn't decide on piano!), 3. make a lot of confusing panning that makes the listener do away with the visual content and only listen on the speaker. There are a lot of other tricks I can teach, but it might suffice so far, just know that "professionally" produced videos are much less attractive than the historian professor rambling about with only a slide show and story-telling, no cuts and no music.
