  • A very short tour of Morris Island, this is the way it looks today. What was there in 1863 is no more. Wish I had of shot more footage that day back in the early 1990's, this is all I have so I tried to put it together to make it as interesting as possible !

Don’t forget that the Cadet battery from The Citadel fired on the steamer, Star of the West on the morning f 9 January 1861, as it tried to enter the harbor to resupply Ft Sumter.....effectively the first shots of the war.......from their position on Morris Island, just a couple of hundred yards north of Battery WAgner.

Last year, we chartered a boat and went out to Morris Island. We spent 2 hours there and we found some nice seashells and some huge, unbroken sand dollars. Except for the seagulls and pelicans, the only sound we heard was the ocean surf...it's uninhabited and undeveloped. It was a really neat experience.

The good news is that what is called Morris Island today is in private hands, fortuantely it has escaped development a few times mainly because it is an isolated island and not lucrative to development. It is only accessable by boat. On the other hand James Island and Folly Island are heavily developed. The site of General Gillmore's headquarters is now under a large motel, the camps where the 54th and all of the other regiments stayed there are under houses.

Thanks for your reply SandhillDigger. I used to think that after the movie many would be interested in knowing where fort Wagner stood so there would be some kind of sign on the island showing the location. In my humble opinion, a historic site like this one- now known worldwide - should be protected as Swamp Angel Battery is. It´s a pity what happens to fort Wagner !!!

Several people I have know who are native to Charleston or James Island say there was at one time a small concrete post or marker there at one time, but I have never seen it myself, it may have been covered by sand from Hurricane Hugo?? But, there is no sign there at all or any kind of official marker. On the other hand there a sign at the sight of the marking the location Swamp Angel Battery near Wagner. It is owned and protected by the Civil War Trust Group.

I liked the video. But oddly I liked the natural sound at the ocean. I live in land and even at lakes and rivers the water sounds different than when you are at the Ocean. It brought back some nice memories for me.

Don't forget that the Citadel Cadets manned a battery of 24 Pounder guns on Morris Island and on the morning of 9 January 1861, fired the first shots of the war at the Federal steamer, Star of the West, which was sent by Buchannan to re-supply and re-enforce Ft. Sumter.

Sad that where the fort used to be was now literally washed away. I heard stories of that assault just prior to the movie coming out but didn't know much detail before that. I heard the remains were removed many years after. There is a measum of sort that includes a skull of one of the 54th soldiers who was killed by a canister round. Poor guy probably didn't know what hit him.

It is said that Col Shaw was buried with his men on the beach. That mass grave is still probably there....under the water.

The erosion destroyed the part of the Island where Wagner was located, there is one little section with some Palmetto trees on a elevated dune which was the western most tip of Wagner still above water. The skull you mention is in a Medical Museum here is a link to it academic.oup.com/milmed/article/179/10/1171/4159658 Thanks for watching, hope you will subscribe if you have not already, recent content as been added to channel and more on the way ! Well, at least there´s some good news, but tell me if Morris Island is in private hands, may it be visited freely today? and if so, how can a tourist know where the fort stood if there is no sign there?
    Thanks again for your reply.

You would have to rely on old maps and possible get a longitude latitude fix. It was a pretty large earthen work, so you don;t need to be too precise. The location of the Citadel Cadet battery on Morris Island.....they fired at the Star of the West on 9 Jan 1861....is under water now.

Thanks so much for your video!! I´m not American, but since I watched "Glory" for the very first time, I always wanted to know how Morris Island and especially the site of the Fort Wagner looked today ...and finally after all this tme my question got answered...thanks to you. But I can´t pass up the opportunity to ask you a question...is it true that there´s a sign marking where the fort stood?
    Once again, thanks for uploading!!!

whoa! it's all gone now, huh?
crazy that there's been no mass excavation and I guess all the tropical looking trees explains the southern flag that was used by the Confederate forces there.
    thanks for this.
