Great list imo. I think you can rate AOA a bit higher in 2015 and dont know why BlackPink is number 1 in 2021 and 2022 when they released nothing in 2021 and aespa released Next level and savage back 2 back and in 2022 would put IVE as number 1 for sure. Also in 2021 Brave Girls should be on the list and in 2020 ITZY should be instaed of Mamamoo (for releasing Wannabe). Other than that its a fairly accurate list in my opinion
Thank you! I think AOA in 5th in 2015 is pretty high for them because around that time, many people weren’t willing to consider them a top group. Their time at the top was also very, very short. Heart Attack was a big hit and Seolhyun exists, but I think the trio of SISTAR, Apink, and GsD were more popular. That trio’s popularity during 2014-2015 was insanely high. Blackpink didn’t release any new music in 2021, but they were still the most popular girl group. The effects of The Album comeback were still very present, especially Lovesick Girls on the charts. In addition, Blackpink was still the #1 girl group on Gallup for both 2021-2022. There were trendy and hot groups like IVE, aespa, and NewJeans, but BLACKPINK were still the #1. They were in a similar position to SNSD in 2014-2015. An established senior group among trendy and hot groups (GsD and Apink). I did not include Brave Girls for 2021 (although they would be #6 imo) because Rollin was more popular than the actual group. They had two other hits, but their hot trendy status was already gone by the end of 2021. Many people loved Rollin’ and stuck around for only one comeback (Chi Mat Ba Ram). MAMAMOO was still considered a top group in 2020. Hip (released late 2019) was very popular this year, and Hwasa was at her absolute peak. ITZY actually lost popularity in 2020 in Korea compared to their debut year. Wannabe was a massive hit internationally but a normal hit in Korea.
Imo I would say (G) I-DLE should have be higher for 2022 since when it was announced that they were coming back after soojin left, everyone was excited for them to come back since they hadn't be back in a year and they really did delivered that entire year.
(G)I-DLE had a fantastic 2022 and their Tomboy comeback is probably one of the greatest comebacks in the history of kpop for completing reviving a group. However, I think 4th is still a very high position and one that matches their popularity. In 2022, IVE and NewJeans were the two hottest and trendiest groups. Both groups had some of the biggest hit songs of the year and were top physical sellers.
@@leapftw4584 Physical Sales (Strength of fandom) Digital Power (Popularity of songs on charts) Public Recognition (How much the public knows them, can be determined from polls such as Gallup and domestic advertisement deals) Legacy/Clout (The previous popularity of a group will be carried into the next year, regardless of their actual performance in the following year. Because public opinion and reputation does not immediately change, except for a large scandal like T-ARA in 2012). A combination of these four attributes will make up the overall popularity.
@@soneparadise2007 This seems like a perfectly reasonable metric and makes it all the more puzzling that IZ*ONE does not appear at any point between 2018-2020. Also kinda wondering why Wonder Girls would place above Kara in 2009? I understand "Nobody" is god-tier but isn't that their only hit that year? Either way, I love how your way of doing things perfectly contextualises peak eras for the dominant groups through all five generations, you're practically a historian.
@@vaffangool9196Thank you for the comment! I’m definitely not a historian just a fan that likes to look back on previous years haha. But thank you for the kind comment. If this video had six spots, I would include IZ*ONE for 2019 and 2020 as #6. I would not include them in 2018 because they debuted way too late in the year. The only metric that IZ*ONE excels in are physical sales. They were third to only Twice and Blackpink for pretty much their entire career. However, it’s arguably the least important metric for girl groups. A good example is SISTAR, who have very poor physical sales but amazing in everything else. Physical sales are great if other factors are good, but that was the only thing IZ*ONE did well in. Their digital power was decent, but not great. Fiesta was their only title that did very well. La Vie en Rose and Violeta did decently, Panorama peaked low but had surprising longevity, while SSOTS peaked high but had poor longevity. Their public recognition lacked compared to top groups at the time. This is partly because of the Mnet scandal. They do decent in other categories while excelling in one. So I didn’t include them. Compared to Twice, BP, RV, MMM, ITZY (in 2019), and OMG (in 2020) who had an abundance of hit songs and good public recognition, I didn’t include IZ*ONE. The first four groups were also well established as the big dogs of 3rd gen, realistically, only the 5th spot was up for grabs. Wonder Girls realistically got outperformed by both KARA and Brown Eyed Girls in 2009, who had fantastic years domestically while WG was in the US. That being said, they were the #1 girl group for the two previous years and enjoyed massive popularity. They revived the entire idol girl group industry. Dropping them to #5 seemed too much. So I put them at #3 as a compromise.
IVE hasn’t fallen out of the top 3 girl groups since debut 🤩 2022: 🥈 (ELEVEN, LOVE DIVE, After LIKE) 2023: 🥈 (Kitsch, I AM, BADDIE) 2024: 🥉 (HEYA, Accendio) Can’t believe they’re still in the top 3 this year with only one comeback 😂
It's all made sense, actually. You don't know how BIG Girls' Generation was in 2011, that year was their peak. And even I'm The Best and Roly-Poly had higher digital sales than The Boys, in 2011, - Girls' Generation sold a MILLION copies of their first Japanese studio album. - Embarked their first Japan Arena Tour, and sold out every single show, - including three of the biggest arenas in Japan, Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Osaka-jō Hall and Saitama Super Arena. - The Boys, despite released in October, is the best-selling album of 2011 in South Korea, knocking out every of the boy groups albums released before The Boys. - it's worth to mention that still to this day, The Boys is the only girl group album that can top the Annual Album Chart of Gaon/Circle Chart. - With The Boys being announced, around 7-8 idol groups had to postpone their comeback, avoiding them being crush with Girls' Generation, which would cause them being eclipsed. - and there was actually a group that being eclipsed by Girls' Generation indeed, which was Secret who released their album one day prior the released of The Boys. - Taeyeon and Yoona were among the top idols in term of popularity and fanbase, in fact, the only idol who can be compared with both of them was G-Dragon. - which I dare to say even 2NE1 and T-ara as a whole group, their popularity and fanbase couldn't be compared to just Taeyeon and Yoona alone, now imagine the full group of 9 members back in 2011.
IKR, 2011 was definitely 2NE1's year, but the owner of this channel is a Sone, so obviously SNSD is gonna be on #1, even tho it makes no sense some years
@@suki8425 I have been living in Asia since 1994, still am till this day, and a K-pop fan since 2008. You know 2008? The year SHINee and 2PM debuted, TVXQ released Mirotic, Wonder Girls released So Hot and Nobody, BIGBANG released Day By Day and Sunset Glow, and the year SNSD was attacked by the Black Ocean, a year before they arise to be the biggest 2nd Gen girl group. What about you? 😊
I think 5th for Red Velvet in 2015 is too high considering the large amount of senior 2nd gen groups (and AOA+EXID) that dominated the year. I agree with a top 10 placement, but top 5 is maybe too high. Still great year though, Ice Cream Cake and Dumb Dumb were both hits.
Fin.K.L in 1999-2000 was more popular overall. Physical sales is only one factor, Fin.K.L had more hit songs and general public popularity during those years. Forever Love, White, and Now were all big hits. It was also during this time that SM heavily promoted S.E.S in Japan which allowed Fin.K.L to dominate the domestic market. Yes S.E.S always sold more albums, but that’s just one factor. Fin.K.L’s albums sold more than everyone but S.E.S.
In 2004 quite literally not a single pop girl group released a hit, only female soloist. In 2005 it would be ( not in order) Jewelry and The Grace, other then them no girl groups really released anything that big. In 2006 maybe Seeya, A.Sia, and Bubble Sisters ( also not in order) but other then them no gg really released anything successful
The only idol girl group that can be legitimately considered popular was Jewelry, who were only active in Korea during 2005. Their song Super Star (the one used in the video during the 2004-2006 segment) was a big hit. They were active in Japan in 2004 while not active at all in 2006. S.E.S. and Fin.K.L being inactive was the best thing that could have happened for every other girl group. Star Empire really fumbled the bag with this, Jewelry really could have dominated this era. It says a lot about their popularity that they could come back in 2008 (3 years later) and immediately reach #1 on the charts. Other idol groups like Sugar, The Grace, and DIVA did okay I guess. DIVA was well past their peak at this point. Sugar was technically in their prime but they enjoyed modest popularity. The Grace were very talented but not that popular. Sugar was the most popular of the 3. For non idol groups, Big Mama, Gavy NJ, and SeeYa, they were quite popular during that time period.
Bad Girl, Good Girl was the biggest hit of 2010, but the actual group was mid tier. They weren’t close to the popularity of bigger groups like SNSD, 2NE1, KARA, or Wonder Girls. A modern example is ILLIT in 2024. Magnetic was a massive debut song, but they’re not anywhere close to the popularity of aespa, NJ, IVE, Idle, or LSFM.
This is a video about Korean popularity not international popularity. Everglow has never been considered popular in Korea despite their popularity internationally from 2019-2020. Oh My Girl from 2020-2021 was a legitimately very popular group with multiple hit songs such as Nonstop, Dolphin, and Dun Dun Dance. Members YooA and Arin were also popular.
In Korea, IVE was definitely #2 in 2023. Them and NewJeans were basically a near consensus top two for 2023. They dominated everything from physical sales, to digital sales, to public recognition. (G)I-DLE and aespa’s popularity in 2023 was pretty close. aespa had the bigger fandom and (G)I-DLE had bigger hit songs. They were pretty even, but I gave the edge to (G)I-DLE who were riding hot from their amazing 2022. aespa’s 2022 while good, was not great.
That’s why I think it’s weird we are already talking about being in the 5th generation because you can see that the 3rd generation of girlgroups only really gave way to the new generation in 2022. Anyway I think each year had iconic top girlgroups ❤
the most accurate pop rating I've ever watched. But there are a couple of mistakes, namely: 2010 and 2011 - Miss A should be in 5th place. They had the most successful debut for a girl group for the first time and the first perfect All Kill with Goodbye Baby 2013 - Hush charts were better than Girls' Day and FX + Suzy's popularity 2015 - Apink is in 5th place, Girls' Day and Miss A are in 4th place, Aoa is in 3rd place and finally Sistar and SNSD should share first place 2016 - Wonder Girls should take 4th place with Black Pink 2019 - Itzy should be in 4th place and Mamamoo should be in 5th 2020 - Mamamoo is in 6th place, Itzy is in 5th place and OMG is in 4th place 2021 - RV is in 6th place and Itzy is in 5th place 2022 - Ive is in 3rd place and ND shares first place with BP 2024 - Ive is in 4th place and Idle is in 3rd
Not really for 2021. Queendom was more popular than both Mafia In The Morning and Loco. And as a season pro themselves, Red Velvet's members are more popular than ITZY's.
Thank you! miss A had a great debut but they very quickly became a mid tier group afterwards. They were never a top group, although they have many hit songs. Suzy was more popular than the actual group. In 2019, Mamamoo was at their peak popularity in Korea and were definitely more popular than ITZY. Gogobebe + Hip were two hits and Hwasa was very popular. ITZY would not be included in 2020-2021. Their popularity was declining after their debut year in Korea. It was a slow decline, but still nonetheless. IVE in 2022 was the hottest group and more popular than the freshly debuted NewJeans. IVE had better physical sales, digitals (their back catalogue of hits did better than Idle’s), and public recognition in 2024. Although Idle had a great year themselves.
GFRIEND’s popularity in Korea declined since early 2017. By 2020, they were past the point of being considered a top girl group. Top 10, yes, but not top 5.
@@94mp99 Well they are known worldwide, Choa, Soyul, Gummi, Ellin and Way, with their songs FM, Saturday Night, Dum Chit, Dancing All Night, Rarirure, Vroom Vroom and others, even their subunit is famous with the twin sisters. They are still popular to date with Ellin becoming a strong influencer on IG and TT, or Way on YT. They opened every Lady Gaga's concert in the US in 2014. Their title Bar Bar Bar got #1 in many countries, and not only Asian countries.
IZ*ONE would definitely not be included for 2018. For 2019-2020, they would probably be #6 for both years. They had amazing physical sales and decent digitals. Fiesta was quite a big hit. I just don’t think they were more popular than any of the top 5 groups I chose for 2019-2020.

@@94mp99 yeah, because you never know if a song will be a gp hit. unless you are iu, bigbang or bts, you never know if a song will do well or not. take ive for example, they went from paks, to not even being able to win on any music shows with their recent cb take twice, they went from paks to barley being able to enter the charts etc.
@@d.b2073IVE was not able to win any music shows because they were being blocked on both sides. Physically, Seventeen did better while digitally, Zico did better. Heya joins the list of hit songs like T-ARA’s Day By Day, miss A’s Only You, aespa’s Next Level that reached the top 3 of Melon to win absolutely nothing. These songs would have swept music shows if the timing was better. It’s all about timing. If Starship really wanted IVE to win something, they should have sent them on The Show or Show Champion.
GIRL'S DAY FOREVER 👑👑🔥🔥
This was genuine K-pop.
Blackpink and Aespa , s.e.s the best ❤
But I want to know. What do you mean by ‘most popular gg in Korea’? How did you measure their popularity?
@@leapftw4584
Physical Sales (Strength of fandom)
Digital Power (Popularity of songs on charts)
Public Recognition (How much the public knows them, can be determined from polls such as Gallup and domestic advertisement deals)
Legacy/Clout (The previous popularity of a group will be carried into the next year, regardless of their actual performance in the following year. Because public opinion and reputation does not immediately change, except for a large scandal like T-ARA in 2012).
A combination of these four attributes will make up the overall popularity.
@@soneparadise2007
This seems like a perfectly reasonable metric and makes it all the more puzzling that IZ*ONE does not appear at any point between 2018-2020.
So I put them at #3 as a compromise.
why is it sad to see that 3rd gen slowly is disappearing

Aespa and Newjeand And ive 🥺❤️ the big 3 in this generation
IVE hasn’t fallen out of the top 3 girl groups since debut 🤩
2022: 🥈 (ELEVEN, LOVE DIVE, After LIKE)
2023: 🥈 (Kitsch, I AM, BADDIE)
2024: 🥉 (HEYA, Accendio)
Can’t believe they’re still in the top 3 this year with only one comeback 😂
girl's generation over t-ara and 2ne1 in 2011 is just nonsense
It's all made sense, actually. You don't know how BIG Girls' Generation was in 2011, that year was their peak.
And even I'm The Best and Roly-Poly had higher digital sales than The Boys, in 2011,
- Girls' Generation sold a MILLION copies of their first Japanese studio album.
- Embarked their first Japan Arena Tour, and sold out every single show,
- including three of the biggest arenas in Japan, Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Osaka-jō Hall and Saitama Super Arena.
- which I dare to say even 2NE1 and T-ara as a whole group, their popularity and fanbase couldn't be compared to just Taeyeon and Yoona alone,
now imagine the full group of 9 members back in 2011.
IKR, 2011 was definitely 2NE1's year, but the owner of this channel is a Sone, so obviously SNSD is gonna be on #1, even tho it makes no sense some years

LESSERAFIN ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
I think Miss A was among the leaders of 2010
How did you determine this?
TBH, in 2015, AOA should be 4th place, while Red Velvet is 5th place.
NMIXX next year. praying circle

Jewelry - Super Star (2005)
FINKL never realeased a album that sold more than SES!! Their 3rd album is the best selling album all the way up until Blackpink the album. 💜💜💜
For historical purposes, what would the 2004-2006 rankings be if you had to decide?
No miss A for 2010? 😪
Everglow in 2020 was more popular than Oh My Girl
기억도 안나는 그룹입니다만
@@아구몬-v5t ?

2017-present - BTS
BASK IN THE GLORY THAT IS SNSD
the most accurate pop rating I've ever watched. But there are a couple of mistakes, namely:
2010 and 2011 - Miss A should be in 5th place. They had the most successful debut for a girl group for the first time and the first perfect All Kill with Goodbye Baby
2013 - Hush charts were better than Girls' Day and FX + Suzy's popularity
2015 - Apink is in 5th place, Girls' Day and Miss A are in 4th place, Aoa is in 3rd place and finally Sistar and SNSD should share first place
2016 - Wonder Girls should take 4th place with Black Pink
2019 - Itzy should be in 4th place and Mamamoo should be in 5th
2020 - Mamamoo is in 6th place, Itzy is in 5th place and OMG is in 4th place
2021 - RV is in 6th place and Itzy is in 5th place
2022 - Ive is in 3rd place and ND shares first place with BP
2024 - Ive is in 4th place and Idle is in 3rd
Not really for 2021. Queendom was more popular than both Mafia In The Morning and Loco. And as a season pro themselves, Red Velvet's members are more popular than ITZY's.
And for 2015, EXID was more popular than Girl's Day and Miss A. While SNSD was clearly still on the throne solely.
Thank you! miss A had a great debut but they very quickly became a mid tier group afterwards.
