Great review. I am on the Makita 18v platform so looks like I have found my next purchase. Though admittedly I still prefer to use my 20+ year old Makita 240v planer when I have a power socket nearby, as it is still a rocket! Can't beat the old makita Made in Japan quality.
The first power tool Makita made was a planer and they have made a lot of great planers over the years. This one is a step ahead at least on the rest of the crowd! Looking forward to adding this to my selection.
4 months later I have a couple XGT batteries now as well as 4 of the Metabo HPT (Hikoki) Multivolt batteries so I am curious which will come out first in the US market and it will be an upgraded version in green vs teal. Also interested to see what the price difference will be!
I still have my Bosch corded planer from over 20 years ago and it works just fine. I have both Makita and Milwaukee 18v cordless tools so if and when I upgrade I’m definitely going for the Makita. It’s clearly the best option here. Heavier is probably because of better quality too on the Makita.
I live in the states and had the chance to use the Dewalt for 3 years and it's a great planer. I purchased the Makita brushed 18v at my local retailer Home Depot because they had a promotion going on at that time for $70 I couldn't pass up that deal since I am in the makita platform also it's also a great planer and surprisingly has a lot of power for a brushed version I love them both.
Probably the best review for these cordless planers I've seen on UA-cam. Everyone else is either reviewing only one, or they are HEAVILY biased towards one. As soon as someone takes the first 5-10 minutes of a video talking about how good it looks? I'm out. I appreciate the comparison sir. Thank you.
Very satisfying to see Makita in the #1 spot for power, AND Milwaukee #4. Like therapy 🥰 Might be worth a video over on Builds & Stuff to see how the DeWalt does with a 21700 battery. It has felt to me over the past few years that DeWalt has been skimping on quality more and more. I really hesitate to get into that brand now (although clearly in this case, Milwaukee was the loser on power). Recently bought a DeWalt square that wasn’t even close to square. They seem to be substituting more and more plastic and just cutting more and more corners.
Awesome review. Loved seeing the comparisons. I believe here in the US the Makita model is XPK02Z. I might be wrong. I purposely spent the extra $ to get the Makita and it has been awesome. Thanks for the review.
Basically what you have here is what you'd call a scrub plane in hand tool working. I made a scrub plane for exactly what you're talking about, quickly removing material, then I pick up my smoother to clean up the surface. Construction is a very different beast to other types of woodworking that's for sure. I also use a carpenters axe a lot of removing wood fast. Great video!

"everybody uses these tools on different ways" No truer words were ever spoken. The number of disagreements that begin with someone assuming that everyone does, uses, believes the same things in the same way,. I can't grasp how that trend in belief has become so prevalent. Thanks for a great review. I own the DeWalt and like it just fine, but I had heard that the Makita was superior. Now I know why, and all of your points are solid. The rebate, the dust port, the max depth of cut, all winning features. I wish I had seen this before I made my purchase. I might just end up with both with the Makita running off a dewalt battery adapter.
Everything I have is Milwaukee. Seeing that this is a brushed motor? Fully expected it to lose. It's also a design from 2015 apparently. Fair test, fair results. Nice work! Good thing I have no need of a planer!

I have the brushed version as well, it does everything I need it to do and I don't feel the need to upgrade, if it were to die, I would buy the brushless version.
I used this Makita one to strip finish from my doors when remodeling. 0.1-0.3 cut. Did a very good job and time + sandpaper saved payed for the tool. 5 heavy oak doors, no problem at all. I did put a small nick in one of the blades from a nail somewhere in the door. There's a bit of a learning curve to avoid the snipe and gouging from that deep side cutting ability. I have since stripped a few tables I restored. Before I had this I would have spent hours with the belt sander and boxes of belts to get the stuff off, with this you can do a big table with 1-2 batteries and you get a really nice finish. I've seen people build jigs for this to use as a jointer. I might try that.
all my tools are dewalt, but I've used the milwaukee, whilst it's an inferior planer the ability to swap sides on the dust hole is fantastic. the dewalt is infuriating that you only can extract from one side
Just ordered the Makita this morning after watching. I was actually down to the DeWalt and Bosch leaning towards the DeWALT but since we have Makita 18v battery’s already in the van why not.
The Makita is the sure winner here for sure, The Milwaukee is disappointing hopefully they make a Brushless model in the future! Thanks for the amazing review as always!
I own the Milwaukee. It does ok for what I use it for, but clearly, an updated brushless version in in order for them. As I'm already in both Makita and Milwaukee 18v platforms, I'll probably get the Makita unless the red boys from Wisconsin hit a home run with a new release soon. I'll do the same with a track saw as well. One can only wait so long.... haha! Good video, fair test as usual. Keep up the great work.
Don't bother waiting for a brushless Milwaukee Planer, Milwaukee keep saying they ain't gonna bother. As for track saws... Milwaukee has a very interesting one coming soon...
Thanks for the review, i work as a cabinet maker. I own the makita 18v, after owning the corded version. The makita i find is too heavy when doing fine work and rolls a bit when planing kick faces
great vid, the makita looks great, but I have the DeWalt and it works very well for me. Surprised by Milwaukee, they normally copy other brands very well with all their tools.
I own the older brushed Makita(beast) the brushless Makita and the Rigid/AEG(brushless) I'm also a big Metabo HPT/Hikoki fan but the Rigid is the best of them all-for planers
My M18 non adjustable backplate does not line up with non adjustable drum causing snipe at end of every board. Design flaw. Fixed problem & bought an adjustable Makita!! Not to mention the double exhaust M18 constantly gets jammed up & the single exhaust Makita is almost impossible to get jammed..
I've got the old brushed makita 18v and just switched to XGT and really looking forward to what makita can do to upgrade their planner to the 40v platform
I haven’t seen too much benefit or power increase on videos I’ve watched, comparing the 40v systems to the previous systems. Speed seems nominal at best
@@JDAfrica trust me the power is there when your using it. The 18v can do everything the 40v can but the 40v doesn't have the same stress on the tool and not draining those batteries as fast. I'd recommend it to anyone who's 18v gear is fading like mine was
Not only is the Milwaukee planer underpowered but has been plagued with issues as well. Front and rear shoes not square, depth of cut not going back to zero, dust shute clogging up... It was so bad at one point we had about a dozen go back to Milwaukee out of our store stock. The Makita brushed planer is far superior, and the brushless is in a different category.
Wow great comparison. I have the DeWalt and love it but that Makita is awesome. Love that it can be adjusted to take paint off. If I wasn't in the dewalt line I would definitely go with the Makita for that reason. Wish dewalt had that feature.
I’m also on dewalt battery system I sold my dewalt planer got a battery adapter and purchased the Makita because that pos dewalt one kept clogging up the chip shoot is so small you end up clearing it every 2nd - 3rd pass planing 1.5 mm and up
The makita aws is awesome, and the first thing I did was remove the rear blade saver thingo. Unscrews pretty easily. One problem is the blade setting wasn’t correct from factory. Also the knob for the depth wasn’t set to zero. Infact it still isn’t after the makita service centre had a go at it lol.
I’m on the Bosch 18V and I’ve been happy with all the tools I have. My only gripe is that the system has some holes in it, in particular with regard to nailers (i.e. they don’t have any yet).
Nice comparison. I never knew the makita had that 25mm rebate depth I’ve got the brushed makita holding out for the brushless Milwaukee tho as I’m phasing out my makita 18v tools
Festool make a corded 240v and 110v one handed Planer the EHL 65 EQ plus with a 4mm planing depth and 23mm rebate depth. Its not cordless but it is very compact, hence the title of being a one handed planer, I haven't used it myself, but its apparently very accurate compared to most planers, and lots of furniture and kitchen fitters use it for scribe work. There is an older bigger model the HL 850 but its not on the festool site anymore so I presume the 850 has been discontinued. I own the Dewalt and can confirm its got plenty of power and it feels great in the hand, not too heavy, really well balanced and typical of Dewalt great ergonomics . Ive got several Milwaukee tools but I cant believe Milwaukee still haven't got a brushless planer. Before releasing anymore new niche tools like tire buffers and the like, they really need to update all their older tools, which still haven't got brushless motors, like their planer and rotary tool ect ect
They still sell the HL850 (probably not many). I know someone who got it a few years back and if he ever turns around and sells it, he’ll easily make a 300% profit. 😳 Virutex have an uncanny range of planers. That’s all I know, I hate the damn things. The larger timber framing specific ones I can appreciate and the specialty ones (like HL850) with shaped cutters and wire brushes as well.
@@robertrada4783 You can definitely still get it via retailers who still have it in stock, but Festool themselves no longer have it on their web site, its just the EHL 65 on there now. hope they do a cordless version at some point. although the 4mm cutting depth might be a bit hard to achieve. Some of Festools cordless products are a little on the underpowered side, although more than powerful enough for precision work, but their build quality and innovation is second to none, I have the HKC 55 circular saw and love it, its a little bit underpowered and cutting depth could be a touch deeper, but the features and usability are way beyond what most saws offer.
@@rocketmunkey1 That’s wild. They haven’t discontinued the HL 850 here (maybe they will soon). Meanwhile, they never brought either 65 machine here (I forgot what was different with the newer one). When they discontinued the CMS everywhere, they kept it here, too (although we were only provided plates for the of1010 and of1400).
Ave has tore down a few Festools, bad build quality in general, they are all hype and 'chincy' with over inflated prices, I would much rather buy Milwaukee or even better Hilti.
@@robertrada4783 I'm in the UK and its not on the festool UK website anymore, They only just recently removed it because it was still there a couple of months back, but when I checked their website to get the exact model numbers for my post, its not there anymore, when you look under planing in the drop down. It could just be a glitch on their website perhaps ? The 65 is a very compact one handed plainer, its a lot smaller than the 850 and doesn't have the forward handle like the 850 does, Also having checked the plaining depth on the 850 it only goes up to 3.5mm where as the 65 is 4mm, So it doesn't really offer anything that I know of above and beyond what the much lighter and easier to use 65 does.
I am a huge fan of your tests from Poland. I want to buy a cordless hammer drill. I am thinking of choosing Makita HR004gz or DeWalt dch333. Which you would recommend to me. Unless you make such a comparison? You can take Hikoki, Hilti or some other companies to the list.
Love all my Makita the only thing I have gone wrong with them is me when you throw them being frustrated I have just updated my circular saw to a battery operated one I had the 10 inch since my 21st birthday corded 👌 I'm 36 now just finished ripping up old decking like butter still that green teal 😘🤑 as sexy as hundred-dollar Bill Green and that new tool smell might get some people frapping lol
I have the brushed Makita, but this makes me want to get the brushless. You sir are no good for my pocket book! One point I'd say is unless you replaced the blades, the Makita was hamstrung a bit because you've used the tool much more than the new ones. Not that it mattered. :)
A lot of companies usually skip out on sending their Best products to Europe because they usually sell to the United States. So all their best products go to the US and Canada, and usually their secondary products go to Europe.
Before you started talking I thought the Makita better be the best since I believe they invented the electric hand planer and it was the first tool they made…….please correct me if I’m wrong.
i have had the milwaukee planer for 3 years. I gotta say its not a bad planer, but come to think of it, i dont set it on 2mm because it does infact shit itself every time...only now this video made me realise how underpowered it actually is. When using it, i feel like iam using a plastic toy. All my other Milwaukee stuff is fantastic, especially hte drills. But i think i will transition to Makita
All my battery tools so far are de Walt but i dislike their planner i am thinking about trying to run the Makita brushless lxt with my DeWalt battery's anda battery converter any one tryed this or have any thoughts in the matter . great video BTW
Makita does seem to win this competition easily. Too bad with cordless tools you kind of have to stick with one or two brands, otherwise the batteries and chargers start to spiral out of control. So if you already have other branded cordless tools, it's pretty hard to justify a new set of batteries for a single tool.
I bought a plastic adapter shoe that lets me run Dewalt 20v batteries in my makita 18v tools. The adapter cost about 20$, been using it for years, it works like a champ. Only down side is it adds an inch or so to how the battery sticks out.
I'm sure I heard the birds mocking the milwaukee 😬, any Idea when the 40v max xgt is due for release @Tools&Stuff? Also love the consistency of the elbowing at Makita regarding the framing nailer, have just brought the Hikoki and it's a weapon! Huge fan of yours! Thank you for your work!
*IDEA, WHAT ABOUT TESTING LOOKING AT OLDER MAKITA PLANER MODEL 1100. OR A MAKITA SPECIALY PLANER. IT HAS A TOTALLY CURVED BASED. FOR SCARFING LOGS AND TIMBER FRAMING AND ANYTHING TO PLANE A CURVE!!! DESIGNED TO FIT/PLANE A 12-5/8" ARC. COOL PLANER BY MAKITA*
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL I live in Maryland us but that answer is good enough. I have the old brushed model and Ive been using it for the 7 years so I can wait. Thanks!
The cordless planer and the cordless multi-tool are probably going to force me into a second battery brand. I'm in the Dewalt system now but they aren't keeping up in some tools. I also did not get the Dewalt tracksaw.
I was on dewalt for years and recently picked up some Makita batteries after deciding to buy their cordless router and I'll most likely be buying this Makita planer. I found most reviewers are usually chosing between DeWalt or Makita so it was a no-brainer to have both battery systems.
You can get battery adapters for just about any brand of battery to any brand of tool. The downside is it does cause the battery to stick out a bit, and depending on the type of tool this could affect ergonomics.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL I got that, but I couldn't find any info, no coming soon and nothing on other countries sites, would be keen to check it out. Got a festool planer and love everything about it except the cord coming out the back haha
Yes, still rubbish with high output batteries. And the Red one doesn't "Expect" HO batteries, as the HO batteries didn't exist when that planer was released.
For me Makita looses in 1st place as the heaviest. Shaving door underneath lying them flat (or any piece of board) you have to keep planer vertically. Two runs and your hand is out of order. Planer performance is not the weight :) The only good thing Makita has is both sides outlet. Unfortunately this is not the same Milwaukee as in olden days. All their tools are so bulky (armoured housing) Hikoki? Whats that. Shouldnt be here Festool as an competitive brand? DeWalt - shame it has only 1 side outlet but that would be mine choice
Seriously you dont know Hikoki(Metabo HBT in US) former Hitachi? They make very good pro grade tools and are one of the biggest brands in the world. Milwaukee is the one that shouldnt be in the test if anyone. Bosch and I agree Festool would have been more interesting . But we cant expect a youtuber to have every brand of course
I have been using the Milwaukee planer for many hours now, I think its great, question you have to ask yourself is if you would really be planing over 1.5mm? many small low depth sweeps are more accurate than one high depth cut.It NEVER cuts out on me on or below 1.5mm.
just look at all those wood shavings shooting out of the Makita. All done on a 18v battery. The most outrageous thing is that Milwaukee is charging a premium for their planer, which it's about the same amount as the Makita brushless 18v in the USA.

Not for long. 40v 4mm announced
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL yeah and Rigid/AEG is not offering some of their better octane tools anymore in the states
Good review!!!
Muy buena comparativa, muy buenos argumentos para elegir la Makita. Congratulations!!!
Makita's a beast. Would be nice to see milwaukee release a Fuel version to get some more performance.
All my tools are Milwaukee so this made me wanna cry lol. Love ya videos mate
I've got the old brushed makita 18v and just switched to XGT and really looking forward to what makita can do to upgrade their planner to the 40v platform
Right there with you mate, mine is hanging in by a thread still goes hard but hopefully it holds on long enough so I can buy the XGT one
I'd recommend it to anyone who's 18v gear is fading like mine was
Video was 2 years ago and hikoki still haven't released a brushless planer. 😢
Thank you for offering the US dimensions to the lumber u planed lol ... also, "love the line lets go tear sum shit up" 😂
Makita 's Number 1 !
Wow great comparison. I have the DeWalt and love it but that Makita is awesome. Love that it can be adjusted to take paint off. If I wasn't in the dewalt line I would definitely go with the Makita for that reason. Wish dewalt had that feature.
I’m also on dewalt battery system I sold my dewalt planer got a battery adapter and purchased the Makita because that pos dewalt one kept clogging up the chip shoot is so small you end up clearing it every 2nd - 3rd pass planing 1.5 mm and up
The AEG brushless planer has some serious torque. Need a 6ah or even better, the 9ah for you to feel it though.
Yes Rigid/AEG planer is more powerful than both brushed and brushless makita's
Beginning sound test…immediately showed the Makita to seem smoother in my opinion.
I'd like to have seen the Bosch as well. Great video.
I plan on doing some Bosch videos soon. But they would not have performed well in this test.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL I'm excited about their new tools they have if they ever get here
New drill review coming soon...
I’m on the Bosch 18V and I’ve been happy with all the tools I have. My only gripe is that the system has some holes in it, in particular with regard to nailers (i.e. they don’t have any yet).
Bosch have a 16ga 18v nailer
Hey brother I learn so much from you. Thanks for the video. Much love from canada.
Cheers
The
larger timber framing specific ones I can appreciate and the specialty ones (like HL850) with shaped cutters and wire brushes as well.
Another great video.
Lucky or guided…?
I found your video as I’m about to buy a power plane. Corded or cordless but this video tells me more relevant info. Cheers bud!
I mostly use my planer to make wooden swords for my son. Might be because I haven't been doing any renovations since I bought it 😁
Yes…unpacking many new tools! 😄
You know it!
If hikoki made a brushless planner it would be amazing
I like the Milwaukee cordless circular saw, but not the planer, why can’t Milwaukee make a good planer like Makita, makita are way ahead.
Makita’s planers have always been second to none
Love all my Makita the only thing I have gone wrong with them is me when you throw them being frustrated I have just updated my circular saw to a battery operated one I had the 10 inch since my 21st birthday corded 👌 I'm 36 now just finished ripping up old decking like butter still that green teal 😘🤑 as sexy as hundred-dollar Bill Green and that new tool smell might get some people frapping lol
Brilliant comparison! Where is the Makita made? I'm noticing differences in quality of Makita products depending on the country of manufacture.
I have the brushed Makita, but this makes me want to get the brushless.
You sir are no good for my pocket book!
One point I'd say is unless you replaced the blades, the Makita was hamstrung a bit because you've used the tool much more than the new ones. Not that it mattered. :)
Great review i did have the old makita 18volt but changed to the dewalt and is a great planer but like in you demo it clogs up real quick
A lot of companies usually skip out on sending their Best products to Europe because they usually sell to the United States. So all their best products go to the US and Canada, and usually their secondary products go to Europe.
Can these be used for epoxy tables? I understand it would take longer, but asking the pros out there. Thanks!
Milwaukee fan boys don't realize high output is the only difference that adds power to their tools while others hang right there with regular 18v
Before you started talking I thought the Makita better be the best since I believe they invented the electric hand planer and it was the first tool they made…….please correct me if I’m wrong.
The first electric hand planer was the Skil 100, in 1949. Makita was the first in Japan, in 1958, and yes it was the first power tool they made.
i have had the milwaukee planer for 3 years.
I don't have a reliable release date yet.
Makita💪power tools✊=LXT18
XGT40= 🔥😈❓❗
When are they bringing out the 40v mak planer? Fizzing for that. Also thoes dewalt planers are terrible for blocking up.
40v has been released... video soon.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL shit yeah about time mate. Where did you see the release? Wonder if they will do a sander now.
Do you happen to know the decibel levels, or which just sounds the quietest?
As soon as they hit wood they are all noisy.
Do you think there will be a 40v soon?
Depends what your definition of soon is?
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL lol within the next 3 quarters?
Yes... depending on where you live.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL I live in Maryland us but that answer is good enough. I have the old brushed model and Ive been using it for the 7 years so I can wait. Thanks!
Will there be a Makita cordless tablesaw???
Its frustrating the the 18v brushless Makita is essentially the same price as the 40v XGT version now. Feels odd
I would say the Makita is the best, and I have Milwaukee cordless saw.
Mate, can dewalt planer use xr flexvolt battery? The 18v/54v 9ah battery.
Yes
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL Thanks m8!
I own all dewalt tools and bought the dw planer, i would sooner buy the makita with 2 batteries and a charger then waste the money again
please make a ryobi comparison too
DeKita. Same same. Lol, let's go Hi-koki. 🙏🏾😎🤙🏾
@@trevorlambert4226 Thanks, I found that out about 2 months ago after I wrote my comment.
Where did you find there's a new hikoki planer? I can't find that anywhere
It hasn't been released yet.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL I got that, but I couldn't find any info, no coming soon and nothing on other countries sites, would be keen to check it out. Got a festool planer and love everything about it except the cord coming out the back haha
I get a lot of info from people in the know long before you will find it on the interweb.
Okay, this inside info. which country or countries does it apply to
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL still nothing?
I always put some wax in mine , so they dont clog up so fast.
We have dewalt onsite and its always getting blocked up with chips even if its at 1mm and its wet
I always remove the sole stand and put the planer on its side.
Red one probably expects hight output battery?
Keep watching
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL ?
ua-cam.com/video/PwRy3Rbdacc/v-deo.html
Yes, still rubbish with high output batteries. And the Red one doesn't "Expect" HO batteries, as the HO batteries didn't exist when that planer was released.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL gonna try anyway, bought one used today, was considerably cheaper then makita, and I've got batteries...
The dewalt planer stand has lasted a few years without looking like breaking for me and it clicks down as well as clicks up
Could it be that the Milwaukee's battery was not fully charged?
Definitely not.
For me Makita looses in 1st place as the heaviest.
Shaving door underneath lying them flat (or any piece of board) you have to keep planer vertically. Two runs and your hand is out of order.
Planer performance is not the weight :)
The only good thing Makita has is both sides outlet.
Unfortunately this is not the same Milwaukee as in olden days. All their tools are so bulky (armoured housing)
Hikoki?
But we cant expect a youtuber to have every brand of course
thanks for the video! I am a great Milwaukee enthausiast, seeing this makes me informed enough to not buy this model.
I have been using the Milwaukee planer for many hours now, I think its great, question you have to ask yourself is if you would really be planing over 1.5mm? many small low depth sweeps are more accurate than one high depth cut.It NEVER cuts out on me on or below 1.5mm.
Yeah I've heard that they're coming out with a new plane soon so I'll wait until that comes out before I buy it
Milwaukee told me a new plane is NOT coming.
just look at all those wood shavings shooting out of the Makita. All done on a 18v battery. The most outrageous thing is that Milwaukee is charging a premium for their planer, which it's about the same amount as the Makita brushless 18v in the USA.
The Milwaukee is the most expensive of all planers in this test in NZ
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL just imagine how much they will charge for their brushless version. Gold
“These are not used as delicate instruments”
Woops, I do. Lols. Well good enough that some gap filler makes it look perfect haha
