Top Things to do in Holguin, Cuba

  • When Christopher Columbus landed in Holguin Cuba in 1492, he declared it “the most beautiful land human eyes had ever seen” I think he was on to something, the beaches are a dream, the people are warm and friendly, and the sunsets alone make you wish you could stay a few more days. And did I mention the mangos?! They smell so fresh and sweet.
You have to experience the Holguin province and when you do check out these top things:
    1. Downtown Holguin - known as the city of parks. They are squares and meeting places for the locals. The best way to go from park to park is by bici taxis. Be sure to see Parque Calixto Garcia where you can visit a local museum Casa Consistorial. Sharing the roads with classic cars is pretty incredible.
    2. Next head a bit outside of town to meet Vichi, a farmer who’s father and grandfather passed on the tradition of making a stable of Cuban cuisine Cassava bread which comes from the root of the Cassava plant.
    3. Check out some of the artists who call Holguin home. Luis Silva is a local artist who collects scrap metal from closed down factories and sugar mills to make his art. His installations appear throughout Cuba especially at hotels and galleries in Holguin.
At Cuadernos Papiro you’ll meet Boris who’s passion is making beautiful paper from recycled scraps. One of my favorite stops was at the Fabrica de Organo, the only mechanical organ factory in Cuba and Latin America. The organs were an attraction at carnivals and large events all over Cuba. There you’ll Antonio Enrique who has been playing the organ for the last 40 years. The Neon Theater is another must see.
    4. A short 45 minute drive will get you to Gibara. A pretty special place right by the sea. Fishermen use only their hands and nets to fish.

As a native Holguinera myself is interesting finding these videos since they show the city I grew up in such a different light. Obviously it's beautiful and full of history but as someone who was raised there, it seems so weird to me for someone to be so amazed by it. I guess when you live there for so long the beauty fades away and all the cracks seep through. I'm visiting my family there soon and I hope that after 4 years away I can find this beauty once again.

I went on a day trip to Holgiun I learned a lot talking to locals,After Cuban missile crises.usa sprayed all Cubans vegetation hoping to cause a famine, then proceeded to gas Havana including many other city's, causing major health issues etc,Canada sent 1 ship full of humanitarian aid to Cuba,Then Usa Navy would intercept Canadian ship escorted to Miami, fined everday while in port.Canada would send 2 more ships, same thing would happen,,Canada would then send 3 more ships to our Cuban brothers and sisters,,Cubans are highly resilient people, tough as nails, they kicked the shit outta Spain after 400 yrs of slavery got there freedom.....I have great respect for Cuban people, love from your Canadian brother. ......

I have to say I used to go often to Holguin and I loved it, but Gibara, I can't explain Gibara, so magical, so mystic.. paralyzed in time. I'll be back again one day, and play to guess the secrets of its old walls, and get to smell the ocean , while listening to the kids playing every sunset by the seashore. Sometimes I tell my daughter that I will take her there so she can find a pirate's treasure.. Even though I've tried, I can't remember the house or the good family that hosted me those days, but those pure memories by the coast, I will remember for ever.
