  • If you are coming to Japan, you may wonder what to wear in Japan.
    Instead of what to wear I thought it would be easier to understand some things you should avoid wearing when in Japan.
    Apart from the things you should avoid, you can basically where anything you like.
    Even, if you do wear some of the clothing mentioned in the video - it doesn't really matter because Japanese don't expect foreigners to dress like them.
    However, it's good to respect and understand the culture of one's country before visiting!
    Hope this video helps!

    Why are they asking foreigners to Japan? Why aren't they asking Japanese citizens?

    • @Leroset

      Because Japanese people wouldn't have thought about what items are weird for people to wear since they have grown up in the culture, but foreigners will have thought about what to wear to blend in.

    Well, it also depends on fashion trends. Yes, Japanese girls are more likely to show skin from the bottom half of the body. However, off the shoulder tops and crop tops are in style right now so you will see a lot of fashionable girls wear those.

      That's basically me. I'm mixed Japanese and Greek but grew up in Japan and have lived there my whole life but I look more like my Greek father so I inherited his tall stature, wavy hair, and light eyes so I'm always mistaken for a foreigner even in school people thought I was an exchange student who happened to speak Japanese! Even now as I'm older there are some people who mistake me for a foreigner and I've even had people come up to me and ask if I was lost while I was going to work haha! I know they still mean well and it shows how quick they are to help foreigners if they are in fact lost. But I still deal with not really being seen as "truly Japanese" as people have said to me.

    You cannot blend in and not to seem like a tourist only with your clothes, if you are from outside of Asia. It does not matter what you wear, when you still have European face☺

    • @surrected4526
      @surrected4526 7 років тому +76

      I totally agree! This video is nonsense. She’s talking about double standards here. Foreigners should avoid certain clothing, but the Japanese wear whatever they want when they are visiting other countries. Foreigners will always dress the way they want to. You go into a country like Japan to explore, spend money, not to bloody blend in with them. A foreigner will never blend into Japan. A foreigner could live in Japan for 40 years and never ever blend in…

      That Thing You See At The Corner Of Your Eye As opposed to...?
      Africans maybe?
      South Americans?
      Well, I mean, for a video in English, you can expect the primary Audience to be people whose native language is English.
      And most of those are European.
      But sure.
      Point is anyone who isn't asian will never blend in with Japan.
      And a decent chunk of Asians stand no chance of blending in either.
      (Asia is a big place. 50% of the people in the world are Asian, but it's certainly not a single homogenous group. Neither are Europeans in fact, but we seem to get treated as one anyway. )

      Actually...don't get mislead by this video....in Japan\China\Korea they wear a LOT of shorts shorts, the trend in those countries is to show how much leg possible, so you can simulate long legs. Another reason why Japanese women tend to cover up more than their European counterparts is to avoid exposure to the sun. Getting tanned in Japan is a nono for a lot of Japanese women because of many reasons including premature skin aging, fairer skin is seen as more feminine etc. Leggings/yogapants are definitely seen as underwear in Japan I would avoid it, flipflops are seen as something you wear at the beach, not a streetwear. Tank tops I'm not entirely sure why, I think that is more of a fashion related rather than sensibility issue. Maybe its seen as too revealing? similar to how some guys in the west walk around town topless.

    • @athenazz81
      @athenazz81 7 років тому +10

      It's pretty much in any developed Asian countries the whiter the skin the more beautiful your supposed to look, along with being really skinny. And covering up their bodies especially in summer is so they most likely avoid getting a tan which is viewed as being ugly to their Beaty standards

      For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath
      No form nor comeliness ; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
      He is despised and rejected of men; a men of sorrows , and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised and we esteemed him not.
      Surely he hath borne our grief , and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
      But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
      All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
      He was oppressed, and he was
      all .
      He was oppressed , and he was afflicted , yet he opened not his mouth : he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter , and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openers not his mouth.
      He was taken from prison
      From judgment: and who shall declare this generation? For
      He was cut off out of the land of the living: for he was cutting off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
      And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence , neither was any deceit in his mouth.
      Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him ; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin he shall see his seed , he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
      He shall see of the travail of his soul , and shall be satisfied : by
      His knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many ; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore Will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the spoil with the strong ; because he hath pored out his soul unto death : and he was numbered with the transgressor ; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

      Definitely depends on the part of Japan! In larger cities and especially if you're walking through Shibuya which has Harajuku district you'll see much more extravagant and expressive clothing! But us Japanese try to keep to ourselves and try not to draw too much attention to others but some people let their curiosity get the better of them!

    I've been to Japan many times and I'd say bringing flip flops is the worst choice to make (unless it's just for the beach or pool). Even if it's during the summer, the types with flat soles aren't good for the feet. Actual walking shoes with a comfortable arch (not Converse, they tend to be flat as well) are most suited for walking and won't cause pain in the long run. On top of that, there are mosquitoes and some of them leave really itchy bumps so I'd stay away from the shorts as well (unless you pair it with leggings).

      Nice.. privilege on display. Yeah, so in the video they are suggesting that in the country of Japan, much of their society is conservative. In the cities you can get away with dressing like a Westerner but if traveling to the countryside, you should be able to respect their cultural differences. You will also notice a difference in courtesy and service when dealing with people. Same is true when hitting the night life. In their minds, you are visiting their country, giving no fucks as usual & doing whatever you want to do. Such is the case when Westerners visit many Asian countries. BTW, if you want to try something different. Why not figure out what Japanese clothing styles meet your needs. Obviously they live there and would know which outfits could accommodate you. Hence.. less to pack.

    I really like contemporary Japanese fashion (as well as traditional, which I wish there was much more of today). I feel like there's always this very nuanced level of layering with clothes for women and, for men, a surprising mix of practical, LL Bean-style, outdoor gear mixed with androgynous choices, like floppy hats or 3 quarter length pants! It's awesome and very modern. More European than American but also very much of its own influence.

    • @XBebopo
      @XBebopo 7 років тому +60

      If short skirts weren't sexual, no one would wear them (they're too inconvenient otherwise). ;)
      This idea that Japan is "conservative" is somewhat correct, but not really. This is a society where you can find porn in every convenience store, free for anyone to read. This is a society that sexualizes young girls and, yes, the very short skirts that they generally wear to a high extent. While I'm not really sure what the real reason behind why it's more acceptable to show legs than chest, it may have something to do with the average size of Japanese womens' chests. Considering that most women here don't, by western standards, have much to show off chest-wise, the fashion would evolve to reflect that (as in, being more conservative up there). And so, if you *do* wear something that accentuates your chest, it's unusual and people might think you're a show-off (since they can't do that).
      Anyway, Japan is a nation of contradictions.

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 7 років тому +23

      +rainbow This is the second time I've seen you say that, and you're still generally wrong about the legs. In japan showing lots of shapely womanly leg is seen as sexy by the large majority of people.
      It does not matter that legs are not sexual organs. Anything can be sexualised, just like ankles once were in parts of the west.
      So not only is showing lots of leg seen as sexy in japan, it is seen as too sexy and not decent/modest in most if not all parts of the west.
      If showing lots of leg wasn't seen as sexy this would not be an issue.
      Japanese subcultures like styles of gyaru might take the short skirt to the extreme often showing parts of their underwear, in mainstream Japanese fashions it's pretty standard to have skirt lengths halfway up the thigh.
      This may not reveal your underwear, especially if you cover your buttocks with your book bag when you walk up the stairs and your front when you walk down the stairs (if you've ever seen Japanese school girls with short skirts walk up and down the stairs you know what I am talking about), but in the west you will not see many people walking around with skirts that length as it is deemed immodest and slutty.

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 7 років тому +6

      +XBebopo "While I'm not really sure what the real reason behind why it's more acceptable to show legs than chest, it may have something to do with the average size of Japanese womens' chests. "
      It's been that way before western fashions were introduced. When it was really warm in summer no one would bat an eye if a woman would tie her yukata up to show lots of leg, but the chest was never displayed openly like that.
      The only japanese fashions that do show lots of cleavage are the gyaru subcultures afaik.
      But they also go in for breast enlargement more than the general population and very very generous padding.
      I went bra shopping in japan once and it was almost impossible to find unpadded bras if you're not looking for imported bras.
      The sizing system is also off at least one size, so what's an AA cup in europe would be an A cup in japan.
      In the industry that's called vanity sizing and it's a sales strategy, japanese do that with bras and americans tend to do that with every item of clothing that is not underwear and that goes tight around the waist.
      I'm pretty sure that japanese clothing is also starting to do that to cope with a population that is both getting wider and taller.
      I have it on good authority that japanese women do tend to have a bit of a complex with their breasts, and logically if you don't show them (and cleavage) you don't really have to worry about that especially if almost no one else is doing it either.
      If you do show cleavage in japan and if you have more than a b cup you're either considered a tourist or a slut.
      South Koreans also have that "no boobs on show but lots of leg" thing going on, so I am inclined to think it has more to do with playing up the assets you do have and downplaying the ones you don't have rather than culture.
      So my conclusion; in the west it's okay to show cleavage but not a lot of leg, in japan and south korea it's the other way around.

    • @whatevergirl200
      @whatevergirl200 7 років тому +3

      90% Of skirts and dresses come with pettiskirts or pettishorts in Japan, so even if the skirts are short, the likelihood of seeing underwear is small, and whilst true anything can be sexualised, the thought that legs and breasts are equally as sexual is just incorrect, obviously a sexual characteristic is worse to show in most cultures I think. It's defiantly fair to say their more modest, and I have never seen it be a problem in the west to show legs? It's just also okay to show chest, maybe both at the same time is too much, but skirts, dresses and shorts are extremely popular here too. I guess I can agree maybe if they had bigger breast they'd show them, but I have friends with bigger chests that hate showing them off, and friends with no chest that wear tank tops because they feel it's less sexual so maybe that's a big assumption to make?

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 7 років тому +6

      School uniform skirts don´t come with pettiskirts or pettishorts and obviously school uniform skirts are worn often by a lot of people in japan for a pretty standard amount of time and are often worn very short.
      Also that 90% of skirts and dresses come with pettiskirts or pettishorts? I think that's rather exaggerated.
      "the thought that legs and breasts are equally as sexual is just incorrect"
      I never said that. Legs are seen as sexual though by the majority of people, just look at the absolute territory thing.
      "It's defiantly fair to say their more modest," That depends, are we just talking about how they present themselves with their clothing?
      Japanese girls and women tend to wear far less revealing clothes in summer (and it depends what style of clothes are fashionable at the moment) to avoid getting tanned, but the short shorts and skirts come out in the winter where they can show off their pale skin with less fear of getting tanned.
      And fashion has such a huge influence on what is worn, it does influence how foreigners see japanese people.
      In the 90's spaghetti straps were abundant in mainstream fashion in japan, as were crop tops and platform heels. To think that most of the women of a country suddenly turned modest within a 2 year time span is ignoring how much impact the appearing and disappearing of trends has.
      The japanese didn't become more modest as people within 2 years time, the trends just changed.
      "and I have never seen it be a problem in the west to show legs?"
      It is not a problem to show legs in the west perse, it really depends on how much you show.
      And you can show much more leg in japan (and south korea) without being seen as slutty compared to the west.
      I would link you the skirt length chart but youtube would just eat the link. Most likely you know which chart I am referring to. It has a woman's leg on it and on it lines are drawn indicating the skirt length and next to it is how western society perceives you according to that length.
      "It's just also okay to show chest, maybe both at the same time is too much"
      We learned in fashion school that showing both legs and a lot of cleavage is often too much.
      You can show more chest in the west compared to japan without being seen as slutty (at the moment, trends may change).
      And the bigger your breasts are the more japan (at the moment) wants you to cover them up.
      That's true to a certain extent in the west as well, take tank tops for example; the size of a woman's breasts do have a large influence on how "proper" that piece of clothing is regarded even though that person reveals the same amount of skin as a woman with a small breast size.
      " but skirts, dresses and shorts are extremely popular here too"
      That may be true, but not all shorts are the same length and obviously that goes for skirts and dresses as well.
      And in general, in japan and south korea skirts and shorts are allowed to be shorter without societal backlash compared to the west. That's just the way it is.

    It's funny because in The Netherlands we also really consider leggings "stockings" and I'd never wear those without something over it, except if it's a workout pants. But these are good tips, I am preparing to battle the summer heat in Japan AND covering up my tattoos modestly, so I was looking for some inspiration.

      It's ok to wear something comfortable especially if it's summer...but please cover yourself when you enter a temple as a sign of respect. It's not to appease the locals but to respect their culture. Being a visitor doesn't mean that you can disregard their culture and do whatever you want. If you want to do what you want then stay where you came from. Just saying.

    Is it me or when legging first came out to the market it was supposed to be meant to wear underneath dresses and skirts. They were supposed to be the warmer version of stockings, but one day someone thought leggings would be worn like pants. I used to be like, "Why is that girl wearing leggings without a dress or skirt on top of it? I can literally see everything and that is too much."
