thanks for the explain. I have a question can I use my pc optical and than to rca converter and put this in channel 5/6 to split my discord sound? this is the only problem I have with the mixer that I can not use discord because I than have double sounds
That could probably work, but since I specialize in helping podcasters, you might get a more accurate answer from Yamaha.
Thank you for all the detailed explanation. Your review is very objective. Especially I like the way you speak English which is so clear and easy to understand for a non-English speaker like me. Very helpful! Thank you!
excellent review! thinking on buying one of these today...does it come with a USB to lightning adapter or? how does it interface with my iPad air 2? Also, I don't see an app for iOS, not available?? Thanks!!
It doesn't come with a Lightning cable, but this adapter should work: amzn.to/2miDWQS
And it should work fine with almost any audio-recording app.
Hi Daniel,
You said that AG series is bit expensive for what it can do ( except for loopback feature). So which alternative I have for around the same price ?
The Allen & Heath ZEDi-10 is pretty good: amzn.to/2tAyOMJ
Expensive? You have a mixer, a direct box, and an audio interface in one device, and if that was nothing, it's supported by Yamaha...
Superb and objective review. Can I get your advice?
For home recording--mostly vocal duets or RARE solo vocals + instrument; AG06 or an interface like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2?
Yes, I won't need the mixer element of this unit much, but what am I losing by going with the AG06 instead of the Focusrite?
I wish I could help, but I only focus on podcasting.
IS THIS SUITABLE FOR PHONE/MOBILE VIDEO RECORDING ASIDE FROM PC?
Yes, it would probably work for that since it has the headset connection. You just have to ensure you're properly splitting the input and output audio with your phone.
Thank you for your excellent review. I have the AG06 and really like it.
Well explained. Many thanks for the overview.
In the Input Mix setting, can you hear yourself i.e. monitor your own audio, at the same time as you're hearing what is coming in via the USB from the computer? And are you sure?;) This is the gotcha on the Q802USB (video coming soon), which I hadn't experienced until that mixer.
+Ray Ortega Yes, I'm sure. The USB mode switch affects only how the audio is sent back to USB. It doesn't affect how the audio comes from USB.
+The Audacity to Podcast it's 2:36am and I'm sitting here still trying to wrap my head around what the 802USB is doing in terms of USB routing lol. It may drive me crazy. It makes no sense to me why the 802USB mutes the monitoring of what is being sent out of the USB when you are using it to route audio in via that same USB. There should be no feedback issue because incoming audio cannot be sent back out. I'm going with design flaw.
This guy is the best. Awesome explanation! Quick question though --- do you think the preamps would be at par with something like a UMC22?
Thank you!
Unfortunately, I haven't tested the UMC22, so I can't answer that for you.
Stay away from Behringer
Is this compatible with android phones?
7:59 I don't see why loopback would be expensive to implement per se. I think the cost is probably tied up in the DSP and software development... and in the white paint.
Whatever the reason, I decided to not buy one of these because I find DSP unappealing without hardware to control it. At very least EQ and compression should be switchable independently, and there should be a way of selecting different presets without requiring a computer, but I guess that would just drive up the cost even more.
In February 2021 the AG06 costs CAD$200. That buys me way more mixer in other brands. Even Yamaha's own MG-U series is more cost effective. I mean, I guess it appeals to enough people to keep it in production but I think there are better options for a mixer/audio interface combo.
Yeah. Plus, there are much better choices these days, like the Zoom Podtrak P4: amzn.to/3siBexa
Thank you so much for your extensive work in detailed version - Sub'd. Have a quick question - I bought the Shure MV7 & DT770 Pro 250ohm version - My use case scenario being Music listening/Movie watching/ Gaming / little bit of video editing with voice over. Im perplexed now to buy an amp or an audio interface or a mixer - could you please recommend of I should go with yamaha ag06 or focusrite 2i2 solo given my use case scenario ? Thanks in advance and all the very best
I would more highly recommend a Focusrite interface.
@@TheAudacitytoPodcast thank you so very Much - 👍
Thanks for this review, I´m your opinion (now in 2021) wich is the best alternative to this products in price/performance?
For small, cheap, and portable, I recommend the Zoom Podtrak P4: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1580285-REG/zoom_podtrak_p4_podcast_recorder.html/BI/8901/KBID/10299
For much greater versatility, features, and power, I recommend the RØDECaster Pro: theaudacitytopodcast.com/rcp
I would buy the 06 if both mic inputs had Phantom. Why don't they? ... Such a miss. They could be used to record stereo with two condenser mics even on professional circumstances. I really miss that...
I am looking to find out will this unit give me an output with reverb as my mic is going directly into my camera and via hdmi through an blackmagic coverter so i dont have any out of sync issues. The controller i am using for all of this is the atem mini pro which does not have any reverb effects.
Yes, there's a reverb effect you can add through the software.
It could have been extremely helpful if someone recorded voice, a guitar and a keyboard through this and demoed the sound quality. (and even compared the sound quality with other famous audio interface like Focusrite). Everybody just talks about it like how many inputs, outputs etc.
please guide how to live vocal recording on AG06
Thank you for your review. What mixer or audio interface would you recommend for a live streaming podcast that interviews a guest at times in studio and at times via skype? Thank you.
For that, I recommend either a standard mixer, like a Behringer X11204USB or similar Mackie, or an advanced mixer/recorder/interface like the Sound Devices MixPre-3 or MixPre-6.
@@theDanielJLewis Hey Daniel thank you for the reply. Have you looked at the Rode Rodecaster Pro yet? They designed it specifically for podacsting. My only worry is that it only does one recording track for all interviewees, maybe an external Zoom H6 would help fix that? Thanks again. :)
@@gregorymclean5901, yes, they sent me one for review but I haven't tried it yet. It looks great except for the lack of multitrack recording. If it was cheaper, I think stereo-only recording would be fine. But at this price, the MixPre-3 is more versatile (albeit not as easy to use for podcasting).
@@theDanielJLewis Thanks so much for the reply I will definitely recommend the audacity to podcast channel. Thanks.
Thanks for the information explaining it in well written and easy to understand method
Do yo know anything about being able to record let’s just say 6 to 10 tracks at a time so the sound can be cleaned up for each and then sent back to record together?
Or what direction should I be researching?
Check out this audio episode (and accompanying blog post) for more information: theaudacitytopodcast.com/howmultitrack
Thank you for the details...
Can we record Multitrack streams i.e. Voice and Music coming from this mixer separately in the DAW?
And can we use this with an Android phone, using the LoopBack function, if I want to record anything with FX, MID/LOW, etc, I would like that to hear on the monitor and send the same at live stream e.g. on skype, or Facebook?
Does this support Phantom power up to 48V???
Thanks
Unfortunately, no. This is not a multitrack device.
On the AG06, can you monitor the other inputs whilst sending only the microphones connected to the XLR inputs when using the Dry Channel 1/2 option?
I'm sorry, I'm unable to answer that question. I haven't had these units since 7 years ago when I published the video. So please direct product questions to Yamaha.
@@TheAudacitytoPodcast no worries! Thank you for replying all these years later :-)
I am completely sold! I am getting me an AG06.
Hi Daniel..great review performance...
I'm a bass player and I'm looking for a compact solution about recording my bass lines over external track or into a free recording sw like GuitarRig o GuitarLogic or Audacity...
I'm looking for an usb audio pc (win 7/10) sound card I can use also stand alone (no pc connection) for study and practise purpose (with headphones and aux in attached like a metronome, smartphone or mp3 player) and with some effects onboard (like reverb, compressor, chorus, flanger ecc...). Zero latency of course or like that, heavy mixing features are not required...
Any suggestion in this ocean of items :) ?
Thanks a lot...
I'm sorry, I can't help you there. I focus on helping podcasters.
AG03 should be fine for you, if you haven't bought something else already. You even get a Cubase LE license with it. You can use it a a simple mixer with USB power or as an ASIO soundcard. But note, in Cubase and similar SW you see 2 in and 2 out channels, that's it. So it's good for recording tracks 1 by 1 or (using the 'dry' mode) a mono instrument + vocals. As soon as you start using the built in effects (compressor, amp sim ...) you just get a stereo mix of everything. Anyway, I think most music is recorded 1 instrument at a time, so if you don't plan to record acoustic drums or use more than 1 condenser mic you should be OK.
Hello I was wondering if this is suitable for using my Yamaha monitors and would it matter which one I bought ?
I suggest you ask Yamaha for the answer to that.
The Audacity to Podcast do you know if the the more expensive model is just because it has more outputs or does it have a better quality sound ?
@@jamous3226 More outputs. The quality is the same.
Hi sir in your opinion the Yamaha ag03 can i use external audio source via USB to my Samsung Galaxy a70? Android 9 version
That's a question you should ask Yamaha.
Which is better
should i get the Yamaha AG03 or UR22 for my XLR microphone because i want to use the interface for vocal and talking to my friends and for youtube but idk which one i should get :/ and does the Yamaha AG03 come with a usb
Both devices are USB. If you simply need an interface, then go with the UR22.
alright thanks :D
Great review man. Thanks for doing it.
Hi, Can I use Yamaha as standalone interface without using computer to plug in a guitar and a Mic? If so, can I use any USB
mobile or iPad charger to make it operative? I´ve been using a good app DAW in my iPad called AURIA which I am familiar with, does that Yamaha AGs compatible with any recording app in iOS or just Cubasis LE that come with it? Thanks a lot!
Yes, I believe so. But I specialize in helping podcasters, so I really can't give advice on using this for music.
Thanks anyway!
Yes, it's compatible, I use it (AG06) for recording with built in video camera recording on my iPhone and iPad. I also use it with garage band on iPad. You probably want to watch the result on my channel. The recent videos on my channel use AG06.
The BEST review. Thank you. Picking it up.
Can I use this with lapels if I am filming a skit or production? And also to connect it with the camera or filming. I am fairly new to mixers and such. :)
You can connect a single 3.5 mm lav mic directly to the mixer. Or, if you buy professional wireless lav mics, they probably have adapters to connect to the XLR inputs of any mixer, including this one.
Hi daniel!Do you know if the quality of vocal recording is in the same level as UR22 or other audio interfaces of the same price using for home studio?
l also like the effect capability which will be usefull for a live performances. So l am in a dilemma which one to choose.l recently made an upgrade to my pc and l put window 10.l read that a lot of people had problems with drivers of focuswrite's audio interface in windows 10.Do you know if other brands have similar problems?
What is your opinion, which is the best choise??
Unfortunately, I don't know how it compares to the UR22. But I focus more on podcasting use, and it sounds like you're looking for music help, so I won't be able to support you there.
The Audacity to Podcast ,thank you!
I have the 06 version. And although the quality is good for recording midi using a DAW, its really bad for using a standard dynamic MIc for vocals. I was hoping it would be a good neat little mixer for my home studio but I think I will have to try again.
I find the quality of mic sound on the main (1) channel very good. Check the Yamaha app that manages the effects if you have amp sim turned on - that generates a lot of noise, but I guess it is supposed to - it's an vintage amp simulation.
how can i separate all channel between 1, 2, 3/4 and 5/6 in DAW? or it's only have two channel?
It's only stereo (2 channels).
What is much better for 2 ?
I have ask. Behringer mixers make some noise. I think buy M Audio Mtrack 2 what do you think for this ? And Electro Voice Re 320 what should be combined with ?
+Enes Erdoğan It depends on which mixer you're using and your mic technique.
From my point of view, the features of this mixer could make it replace a sound card on a PC.
yup that's what digital mixers do... along with having the analogue controls and connections in front of you
Yes it’s the ultimate audio interface
Can this drive a 250ohm headphone ? Around like 110db?
You'll need to look at the specs or ask Yamaha yourself.
are those effect saved to the hardware so next time i dont have to have the program running ?
Yes.
Did you notice if the XLR or line input was noisy? I got the mackie and tried that but it was noisy as hell. I think it's the size that dictates it cost. I'm looking at the Zedi 8 but it's not bus powered which is a big downside.
On the AG06, if the gain was still up on the unused XLR input, it _would_ still introduce extra hiss.
But whether the preamp is powerful and clean enough depends a lot on your mic. Generally, the Mackie preamps in their mixers are pretty good, certainly better than preamps in most Behringer mixers.
Unfortunately, I didn't have good way to test the preamp his when I had these units, but I would guess they wouldn't be as good as what Mackie uses.
So if you're using a low-sensitivity dynamic mic, like an RE20 or an SM7b, then you'll need a better preamp than these low-cost mixers provide.
ended up going with the ART USBMix because I only realy need the line input and I don't need the higher sample rate/bit depth from these devices.
Fantastic detailed!
Does AG06 or it's driver can ducking background music?
I don't think so, but you should ask Yamaha.
can i control the ag dsp controller on the ipad to changes with reverb etc.
I suggest you contact Yamaha with that question. I address only the needs of podcasters.
Hi. Very nice review I just purchased it. Can you please guide how can I connect AG03 mixer with Teams VC meeting for training where I can listen to the audience and I can give training and play music as well. I am afraid if it has the echo problem while audience would be hearing their own voice please suggest. Thank you 😊
I'm sorry, I don't provide product support for Yamaha's products outside of podcasting uses. You'll need to contact Yamaha for help.
Ok. Thank you.
You can’t use loopback when using Teams. Just use input mix instead and use another computer to play music and use one of the aux inputs for that. Or use the same computer to play music, from the built in soundcard to one of the aux inputs.
can i use the combo jack (channel 1) for guitar?
I believe so, but you'll need to check with Yamaha as my review focuses on podcasting.
I have one problem. When I use headphones or use the speakers in the headset I have a noise that lasts for 10 seconds and disappears. If anyone knows what the problem is I would be extremely grateful
I suggest you contact Yamaha for support with their product.
Install the windows drivers
Kindly do a video of Yamaha AG03 vs. Behringer Xenyx 302usb .....cheers !
I wish I could, but I had the AG03 only on loan for this review. But I can tell you the 302USB is a lot less expensive and probably close to as good for podcasters.
what mixer can you recommend when I have a remote host on my live stream?
I recommend the Mackie ProFX8v2 and the RØDE RØDECaster Pro. You can see my brief thoughts at theaudacitytopodcast.com/best-podcasting-tools/best-mixers-for-podcasting/
Is there something you like?
I'm now a big fan of two things:
RØDE RØDECaster Pro: theaudacitytopodcast.com/best-podcasting-tools/best-mixers-for-podcasting/
Zoom PodTrak P4: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1580285-REG/zoom_podtrak_p4_podcast_recorder.html/BI/8901/KBID/10299
The loop back ends up crashing the windows driver and ending live stream.
Never happened to me
USB-2 only?
You'll have to check with Yamaha. I'm actually not sure if it's even USB 2.0. It might be USB 1.1.
But all older USB versions are compatible with newer ones.
I recommend the Presonus AR8 mixer it's amazing for podcast, live stream, it has a super channel that is Bluetooth!!
Yeah, I have my eyes on the AR12. I bought one during an Amazon Prime Day pricing mistake, but the company canceled the order.
The Audacity to Podcast I would love to live stream with you or collaborate. I know all my gear and into podcasting a lot. I own www.719internetradio.com for Colorado Springs
What do you have in mind? You can contact me through theaudacitytopodcast.com/contact
Very helpful. Thanks!
Wow. I came here for the AG06 and stayed for the Ramen Noodle legend
ROFL! I'm not sure about "legend," but thanks!
can i used this live from android?
You probably can, but I suggest you direct your questions to Yamaha since I no longer have these mixers.
Could I use this for gaming?
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but the answer is probably yes.
Yes, you can use it for gaming. I think they were designed for gamers and vloggers. Of course I presume you're talking about using it to record gameplay audio, right?
What price is it in lndian money
I'm sorry, I don't know that. You'll have to check at your locally available retailers.
Thank you very much boss
Don't worry about the price today. It cost about 100 euro on amazon
Excellent!
I got my ag-06 for $150 so I’m happy
I'm getting this for about 90$
The pre amps are much better with these units than behringers
+Chris Ennis I don't think Behringer preamps are as bad as many people are claiming.
Anyone figured out yet how to deal with the white noise the AG03/AG06 produces? It's there even with gain at 0 with no input attached.
I suggest reaching out to Yamaha for support.
If you want to record with effects:
1. Switch off Amp Sim on the guitar channel (2),
2. Turn down faders on channels that are not in use.
If you want to record dry, there should be no noise in the first place.
Thanks for the review and clear explanations.
